Culture Tournament 2011: Will Shaq Do a Better Job on TNT Than Chris Webber?
Here’s the entire bracket.
From the earlier media matchups, the only one that remains up in the air is Joe Buck vs. Colin Cowherd … for the right to get stomped by Bill Simmons.
If you’re wondering about some of the pairings below, here’s why Van Pelt and Feinstein are matched up, Gus Johnson & Marv Albert moved around this offseason, and Shaq joined TNT (which could marginalize the criminally-underrated Chris Webber). Reilly and Olbermann need no introduction.
The second round begins tomorrow.
Scott Van Pelt vs. John Feinstein
- 6. Scott Van Pelt (87%, 853 Votes)
- 11. John Feinstein (13%, 124 Votes)
Total Voters: 976
Chris Webber on TNT vs. How Shaq Will Do on TNT
- 3. Chris Webber on TNT (51%, 508 Votes)
- 14. How Shaq Will Do on TNT (49%, 491 Votes)
Total Voters: 999
Rick Reilly vs. Keith Olbermann
- 10. Keith Olbermann (69%, 639 Votes)
- 7. Rick Reilly (31%, 291 Votes)
Total Voters: 930
Gus Johnson vs. Marv Albert
- 2. Gus Johnson (69%, 676 Votes)
- 15. Marv Albert (31%, 308 Votes)
Total Voters: 984

Ohhh, you meant to put that SVP pic in this post
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:08 PM
If Gus Johnson wins that 2 v 15 seed, you’re all in BIG trouble.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:10 PM
Ha. Suck it, Gus Johnson haters
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:11 PM
If Gus Johnson wins that 2 v 15 seed, you’re all in BIG trouble.
Big trouble.
/cracks knuckles.

culture!
/jazz hands
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:11 PM
I’m pretty sure SVP is going to top 95%
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:11 PM
Marv’s reasons for winning are right here:
Exhibit A.
Exhibit B.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:12 PM
C’mon Gus!
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:12 PM
is anyone really asking themselves this?
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:12 PM
I’ve had a couple of these where I don’t actually know who one of the competitors is. What does John Feinstein do?
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:12 PM
marv albert is a MUCH better broadcaster than Gus Johnson. Sorry, but it’s true. Gus is fine but this is Marv fucking Albert we’re talking about here. I don’t care how many pairs of women’s underwear Marv likes to put on… it doesn’t take away from his professional talent.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:13 PM
Yeah Ive heard the name but I have no idea who Feinstein is. No way he gets votes.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:13 PM
a vote for john feinstein is a vote for turkey necked crusty assholes.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:13 PM
Can I vote for a tactical F-18 strike against both?
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:13 PM
I am astounded that people who are not that bot on twitter that badmouths Marv all the time are voting against Marv Albert
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:13 PM
Reilly-Olbermann is the fourth vote of which I’ve abstained in the tourney. Buck-Cowturd didn’t get my vote today, either.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:14 PM
For all of you license plate nerds from awhile back… Here is the winner. Hideous. Not looking forward to affixing this monstrosity to the back of my car.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:14 PM
Shit, that 2nd one was supposed to be MJ’s iconic reverse lay up against the Lakers. I got caught in Taj Gibson YouTube worm hole.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:14 PM
I am not a Gus hater, but this seeding is a travishamockery.
/skips the 7 v 10 match up
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:14 PM
Wouldn’t most Gus fans agree with this? Marv is a legend
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:14 PM
He’s written quite a few best-selling books. “Season on the Brink”, about Bob Knight and IU is probably the most famous.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:14 PM
he’s doing his best to turn tiger woods into a sympathetic figure.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:15 PM
Exhibit C “She also claimed that he would force her to “serve up a facial” for periods of up to 45 minutes.”
Marv Albert is amazing.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:15 PM
Soo Jim Thome’s floating out on waivers right now
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:16 PM
Reggie Miller ruined the fuck out of that moment.

Phillies need to pull a rabbit out of their hats.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:16 PM
What does John Feinstein do?
Feinstein was one of the first, “Was a Great Writer Until He Started Getting Face Time On ESPN.” This was in the early 90s. He got into some sort of spat with ESPN and now writes for the Washington Post and writes books. I have no clue why he would be considered remotely culturally relevant in 2011.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:16 PM
I voted for Marv, Gus needs to go away soon. HA HA!
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:16 PM
I see SVP is not having any backlash from the gay rumors.
/TBL
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:17 PM
What is John Feinstein doing in this thing? Is this the “Guys who were on ESPN Sports Reporters in 1996″ bracket? Where’s William Roden?
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:17 PM
Olbermann vs. Reilly reminds me of the Alien vs. Predator slogan…Whoever Wins, We Lose.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:17 PM
not messy enough…break out some ‘nam-era BLU-82′s.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:18 PM
I actually like Marv, but I kinda love Gus. Couldn’t care less if that’s lame or not.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:18 PM
Agreed. This whole thing is starting to reek of “Who’s Now?”
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:18 PM
This would involve every other team passing up on him, guess it could happen
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:18 PM
Actually quite shocked people don’t know who Feinstein is. Not that he’s a paragon but he’s written some well-known books.
Marv as a 15 seed to a 2 seeded Gus Johnson. There are no words.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:18 PM
They’re too busy screaming at the television to realize it.
Once he trademarked Rise and Fire he was done for. That, and I think it was the Butler-UF game where he stood up at the announcer’s table with Reggie Miller right before regulation ended when UF had a chance to win. It’s like having a fan announce the game. I’d rather listen to Dick Stockton fumble names around than have Gus yell at me for 2 hours.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:19 PM
I have no clue why he would be considered remotely culturally relevant in 2011.
Wikipedia provides the answer!
In 2010, Caddy for Life was produced in documentary format for the Golf Channel
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:19 PM
STARTING????
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:20 PM
OK, so I’m aware of (not familiar with) John Feinstein’s work but what the hell is he doing here for 2011, TBL?
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:20 PM
nice to see that the over-rating of Gus continued onto the culture tournament.
/screams at the end of 25 point basketball game
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:21 PM
Isn’t that exactly the point of this thing?
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:21 PM
I’m more perplexed that 8 people have voted for him so far
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:21 PM
Selection Committee always fuck up the seeding.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:21 PM
The only reason Gus Johnson will win is because SC hates him.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:21 PM
Stark, he got into a media tiff with SVP earlier in the year, which would explain why they are matched-up with each other. He also got salty he was not involved on the Army-Navy football game documentary being made right meow.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:22 PM
Feinstein is a little strange. I’d rather have the nyan cat in here.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:23 PM
/entranced
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:23 PM
I would argue that ESPN’s “Who’s Now” reeked of TBLs culture tourney.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:24 PM
Gus Johnson blows.
/adds nothing to discussion
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:24 PM
Can I vote for a tactical F-18 strike against both?
not messy enough…break out some ‘nam-era BLU-82′s.
Spence, I’d go for the MOAB
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:24 PM
You’ll like this even better then, Spence. It was the only way that abomination of a new Cy-Hawk Trophy could be saved.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:25 PM
I’m ok with Gus Johnson, but having him against Marv Albert, as a 15 seed….that’s some screwed up seeding right there. Marv Albert is the Vin Scully of basketball.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:26 PM
Love Gus
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:26 PM
Shaq will try to be funny and fail most of the time. Webber was a great analyst.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:27 PM
too expensive for those two fucks. plus, we gotta save those for the thundering horde of impoverished afghan/paki led by those imposing, omiscient “warlords.”
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:27 PM
If Hafner is hurt and needs to go on the DL, then there is no way that the Indians don’t claim Thome. None. Zero.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:28 PM
that’s good. only thing funnier would be the land grant trophy.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:28 PM
There’s also no way the Twins trade him to a division rival, right? Plus, would the Tribe be willing to send anything of value back to Minny for a 40 year old 1 month rental?
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:29 PM
did they get that trophy out of a coloring book? holy shit that thing is terrible.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:30 PM
Agent Orange would do the trick as well.
Oh and /team Marv
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:30 PM
Will Minny reclaim him or let him go back to Cleveland for a swan song before he retires at the end of the year (with a ticker tape parade in Cleveland in November after beating the Phillies and Clifton Phifer in game 7 1-0 on a Thome blast deep into the Philly night)…
/Wakes up and looks at the standings and weeps a little
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:31 PM
Agent Orange would do the trick as well.
Just don’t get any on you. It causes….issues.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:31 PM
indeed.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:31 PM
Who the fuck are all these cock suckers voting for Gus? Show yourselves!
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:31 PM
and an even better recipient of illegal gifts given to him by a booster during his time at michigan, the most honorable and ethical of institutions.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:32 PM
He also got salty he was not involved on the Army-Navy football game documentary being made right meow.
Speaking of being culturally relevant in 2011.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:32 PM
Who the fuck are all these cock suckers voting for Gus? Show yourselves!
Don’t you mean shaft and head suckers?
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:32 PM
And I thought nothing could be worse than the old one that looked like a hungover shop teacher made it in about 15 minutes. The new one was said to “embody the values of Iowans.”
Personally, I think all it says is this.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:34 PM
Wally’s definitely hitting the crack pipe I think.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:34 PM
+1 arioela, er, nipple… or whatever
TITS!
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:34 PM
No. You seem to think your “shaft and head” comment in the last thread was a good one. It was stupid, awful analogy. I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:35 PM
No. You seem to think your “shaft and head” comment in the last thread was a good one. It was stupid, awful analogy. I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul.
go suck on some areolas. because everyone says that so often. I hope god has no mercy on your soul.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:35 PM
It was just a nice daydream.
/wipes drool from side of mouth and from desk and keyboard
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:37 PM
Why the hell wouldn’t they? Not exactly like he’s some young prospect and they’re contending this season
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:40 PM
ATL and SG are totally gonna do it.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:41 PM
na…ATL’s holding out for candace swanapoel after she loses a few ellbees.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:43 PM
I bet ATL would love to run his shaft and head along SG’s nipples and areola.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:44 PM
na…ATL’s holding out for candace swanapoel after she loses a few ellbees.
probably.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:47 PM

August 22nd, 2011 at 3:50 PM
SG doesn’t bewb secks, remember?
No, she said one time that she’d do it, but would stare up at her guy with a weird look on her face the entire time.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:51 PM
I thought that was only on Saturdays?
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:52 PM
that’s some funny shit and i’d enjoy it more that way. the ol’ laughysquirt.
August 22nd, 2011 at 3:52 PM
ESPECIALLY with some idiot that doesn’t know the difference between a nipple and areola. Because it is always referred to as an areola.
August 22nd, 2011 at 5:23 PM
A mute button is to Gus Johnson what a refrigerator is to beer.
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:27 PM
Shaq is a massive downgrade for the hardcore NBA fan, but probably a smart move for TNT marketing to casual fans.
Gus Johnson wouldn’t vote for Gus Johnson in this matchup.
