The Vick GQ interview is interesting..
“Vick ultimately was persuaded — by Commissioner Roger Goodell and other NFL officials — to pick the Eagles. Bills and Bengals fans surely will be thrilled to know that the league office is participating in personnel decisions; they also would probably want to know why Vick was steered away from their teams.”
I remember this happening at the time but no one seemed to think it was a big deal. Goodell is overstepping his power here, no? I would be pissed as a fan of a team that Vick had initially wanted to play for.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:28 AM
@CJ — Oh, it’s definitely fishy. It would be nice to know more about how he was “persuaded”.
/2011 MVP
August 18th, 2011 at 8:28 AM
I don’t think either team could have provided the safety net that the Eagles did cj. He was behind Donovan & Kolb at the time, no expectations.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:30 AM
Yeah, but that’s not really the issue.
Vick was a free agent, had the right to choose his own team and each team had the right to not have the league working against them to keep him from signing with them.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:32 AM
If you were a free agent would you want to go to the Bungles or the Bills unless you absolutely had to?
/nice roundup by the way CRM
//Nicole S. can so get it.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:32 AM
I mean, we don’t really know what “persuaded” means. Maybe there was very little pressure on him at all.
But it’s hard to argue that Goodell being involved in that process is proper.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:33 AM
If the league is going to punish teams for tampering, they probably shouldnt participate in it themselves.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:33 AM
You read the article, right? Vick said “I think I can say this now, because no one’s feelings will be hurt. But I didn’t really want to go the the Eagles. I wanted to go to the Bengals or Bills [because those teams told him he could start immediately]“.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:34 AM
Dude, read the story. Thats where Vick WANTED to play. That’s the issue.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:38 AM
And obviously Christine ODonnell loves that the interview went the way it did, so she can play the rude, gotcha liberal media card that seems to work for Backhman and Palin. Why on earth should she expect to be asked a question pertaining to a topic in the book that she is on the show to promote?
August 18th, 2011 at 8:38 AM
If you’re under the impression that I am that the league was invested in Vick as a payback for not blowing the whistle on league wide player involvement in dog fighting, then the league would most definitely take interest in Vick’s re-entry into the league. If that is the case, when you compare the three organizations, it’s really a no-brainer.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:41 AM
Well, we have no way of knowing if the first part is more than just a conspiracy theory.
And the fact that you and I agree that the Eagles organization presented the best opportunity for image rehabilitation is really irrelevant.
Roger Goodell should never be talking to free agents about which team they should or should not sign with.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:43 AM
I mean, shit like this makes Al Davis seem not crazy.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:44 AM
Game changer: You can now get NFL Sunday Ticket through the PS3 network
It costs $340 though.
I just called Directv a couple of days ago to remove Sunday Ticket saying it was too much money. They promptly gave me a one time $50 credit and also lowered the monthly charge from $54 to $34 a month for the ticket. So instead of $325 I’m effectively paying $155.
I told the agent, ok, I guess I will keep it.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:46 AM
whoa, now. let’s not get carried away.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:46 AM
Sunday ticket question: Why would you pay so much money when you can really only watch one game at a time? even if there are 3 on at the same time you want to watch, you have to flip back and forth way too much.
[if there is a box where you can watch 4 games on the screen at once, disregard that paragraph)
Red Zone with Fios is $50. They ping you around to all the games, PLUS you get the one or two in you market on regular TV.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:47 AM
under normal circumstances this is true. With or without the scenario I presented, this wasn’t a normal circumstance. People forget now, the but the level of protests and media inquiries anticipated were extremely high.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:47 AM
Time for this argument again.
/Have NFL Red Zone
//Don’t have Direct TV
August 18th, 2011 at 8:49 AM
1) If you live in Boston but are a Rams fan, you’ll never see a game.
2) There are a billion commercials and dead time in NFL games. You can watch two games simultaneously and never miss a play.
3) I setup 3 TVs at my place.
4) There is a channel where you can watch multiple games at once on one TV.
It’s an awesome product.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:49 AM
no, he’s protecting the interests of the league…vick would’ve looked like a circus clown scrambling around in cincy’s uniform. and the league doesn’t even want buffalo in the country anymore, let along having exciting players there.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:49 AM
This is why I go to the bar when there a bunch of good games on. 6 TVs >>>>>> 1 TV

August 18th, 2011 at 8:51 AM
dude, where’s the invite? ill bring the weed, man. you bring all the other stuff.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:52 AM
oh no you di’nt.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:52 AM
Because you get to watch the game you want, as opposed to the game being presented in your market. You get to watch it in your home as opposed to going to a bar.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:52 AM
Oh, of course. And like I said, of course I agree with you about the Eagles ultimately being the best for him.
You could argue starting immediately would have been bad for him anyway – even with a good team – there’s no way he would have been prepared physically or mentally after that long away.
But still, if the Bills and Bengals didn’t know Goodell was working against them… how can they trust him if he says it was a “one time” thing? They can’t.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:52 AM
I won’t disagree about this. Hell I remember going to the first game of the ’09 season down in Charlotte (did the Green Legion trip for my friends bachelor party). There were at least a couple hundred protestors against Vick. Of course 500 Eagles fans can drown them out pretty quickly…
August 18th, 2011 at 8:53 AM
Well like I said, I’m getting sunday ticket for $155. So I get all the games plus the red zone channel for $100 more.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:53 AM
obama’s golf swing is horrible. suck on that 44.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:54 AM
You spelled at them, didnt you?
August 18th, 2011 at 8:54 AM
Any time. Only condition I should make you aware of is that because of the parties present, the Eagles, Dolphins, and Niners games always get watched. Still, we do some solid work with the food and every Sunday is glorious.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:55 AM
one thing that REALLY chaps my ass is every time a Jags game gets blacked out locally, they don’t show ANY football on the channel it was supposed to be on.
August 18th, 2011 at 8:55 AM
Heavy weekend of drinking (heavy heavy heavy) + Eagles fans in hostile city = spelling
August 18th, 2011 at 8:57 AM
oh yea…this is a must. i can’t wait to put that 35 lbs i lost back on from watching football for 12 hours a day and stuffing my face with delectables.
/you watch the dowfeen? seriously? they’re nigh unwatchable…the pastel-ier jaguars
August 18th, 2011 at 8:59 AM
awesome! except for the part about him being a sleazebag killer and all…
August 18th, 2011 at 8:59 AM
I’m so good at maneuvering between 2-3 games at once (I have a two score policy for removing games out of the rotation if it’s one I don’t have a real vested interest in) that I want to list it on my resume but aren’t sure how to re-word it to sound like a marketable skill
Sunday ticket is the greatest thing that ever was TBL, just get it and deduct it as a business expense
August 18th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
This is very true and if it was the NBA and David Stern there would be a real outcry.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
lol
August 18th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
AND the Niners. The Dolphins play almost unwatchable football, yeah. But the Niners haven’t been any better. With three TVs though you can almost always escape, except those few weeks when the NFL only puts 3 four o’clock games on.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:01 AM
The wife already has to deal with the non-stop football on Sundays from 12 til 11, I don’t know if she could handle Sunday Ticket as well.
/Jersey, TBL – we still have to try to get tix for the Eagles-Jets game in December, I’ll bring the tailgate stuff
August 18th, 2011 at 9:01 AM
She’s less than a lightweight if she can’t handle Piers Fucking Morgan.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:02 AM
Wait till kids start. You’ll lose much of that 12 til 11 time stretch.
I’m lucky I get to watch the Eagles game some Sundays.
/personal experience’d
August 18th, 2011 at 9:02 AM
piers morgan is ALWAYS an asshole. he’s journo-scum of the highest order.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:02 AM
This. If I’m not at a game on an NFL Sunday, I’m usually at a bar. Very rare occasion that I’m at home to watch.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:03 AM
now that brian daboll is calling the plays, it’ll go from almost unwatchable to completely unwatchable.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:04 AM
i’ve got it this year b/c directv gave it to me for free. might keep it going next year since i didn’t pay for it this year.
however, i enjoyed redzone on comcast to a degree. nothing beats watching your favorite team’s game when you’re out of their market though.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:04 AM
You mean the Game Mix channel that shows all the games playing at once? Yeah, I think they have that.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:05 AM
commercial fodder.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:06 AM
So, possible sign of a something serious going down with online sportsbooks a la the poker busts…yesterday, one of my accounts got disabled. I didn’t have time to find out what was up, was going to deal with it today. So today, I wake up, and they have deposited/refunded every transaction I’ve made over a 3-year back into my bank account…which accounted for more than the present value of that account.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:06 AM
Just my opinion, but I think the last thing he needed was to start right away. The time on the bench and running that ridiculous wild cat formation allowed for Vick to get his feet under him and he could ease his way back into his life both on and off the field.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:07 AM
who? what? where?
August 18th, 2011 at 9:07 AM
they have a harness on…that eliminates the crazy.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:07 AM
Wow. Time to call the bank and tell them to block all transactions from that company.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:08 AM
Jay V – That happening to more than one company?
August 18th, 2011 at 9:08 AM
You are definitely correct. But it wasn’t Goodell’s place to push him in that direction.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:08 AM
you lucky bastard.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:09 AM
I’m sure everyone is tired of thinking about the Eagles, but one last thing, the Jeremy Maclin news is awesome. He must have been scared shitless, and it’s nice to know some things can still remain private.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:09 AM
yeah, but did they overpay you in total refunds than what you ever paid?
August 18th, 2011 at 9:10 AM
link?
August 18th, 2011 at 9:10 AM
I don’t think you understand…I made out on the deal. Not to mention, pretty much every transaction comes from a differently-named payment processor anyway.
I have no idea what is going down, but that seems to be anecdotal evidence of something going down.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:11 AM
No, I understand. It’s time to call the bank to make sure any reversal will not be forthcoming.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:11 AM
something tells me the eagles were a “good fit” not because of the roster but the coaching staff and personell, compared to the bengals and bills.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:11 AM
I have no idea…but I’ve easily withdrawn more than I’ve ever paid in anyway…so no matter what, it was gravy.

August 18th, 2011 at 9:15 AM

August 18th, 2011 at 9:15 AM
eesh, that is rough man.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
Is that going to red flag your bank account?
August 18th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
The Situation should start wearing Armani, Ralph Lauren, Gucci, et. al. could be a great little business — getting paid NOT to wear a label.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:17 AM
I heard some radio guys talking yesterday that there was something in the latest budget deal that was going to try and allow on-line sports betting again. did it have something to do with that possibly?
August 18th, 2011 at 9:17 AM
While we’re talking about NFL on TV. Am I dreaming or did the league used to put doubleheaders on both FOX and CBS in Week 1? Not the case this year from what I can see.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:19 AM
That’s just the last week I think, unless the schedule is different this year Week 1 usually falls on the US Open final so CBS just shows one game
August 18th, 2011 at 9:19 AM
If my bank account wasn’t already red-flagged for all the gambling related transaction over the years, I’m not sure it’s going to be now. But I have always stayed prepared for that possibility by maintaining checking accts with 2 diff banks, keeping one “clean” so to speak.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:20 AM
i think so, but with games on thursday, sunday and monday (two?) i’m not sure they need double headers…or they haven’t decided yet.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:20 AM
Sunday ticket question: Why would you pay so much money when you can really only watch one game at a time? even if there are 3 on at the same time you want to watch, you have to flip back and forth way too much
Late to the party… but as a Packers fan I really don’t want to subject myself to watching 16 Falcons games a year. They might put me to sleep. If you don’t live in the same market as your team, you only get to see their national TV games. If you’re out of market team is bad, you might not get to see them at all. Also… the “you can only watch one game at a time” argument doesn’t hold much water. There’s so much dead-time between plays it’s not very hard to switch between games if you know how to use a remote.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:20 AM
meh…if those high-end labels were gonna pay people not to wear their shit, im sure they’d start with paying all the disgraced wall street execs, ponzi schemers, etc to stop wearing zegna or anderson and sheppard during their hearings.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:21 AM
@Spencer – playing Oakland Hills South this afternoon. I’m all fired up.

August 18th, 2011 at 9:27 AM

This Goodell/Vick business is really shady. If it wasn’t for him not wanting to ring up a bunch of lawyer hours, Mike Brown might’ve made a stink about this.

Morgan pressed her again, asking if she was still a supporter of abstinence.
“Are you the pro-masturbation talk show host?” O’Donnell asked, jokingly.
“Why, yes,” Morgan replied in jest.
HA.
Also, the people that still take the stance that masturbation is some sort of evil sin are lying. And sinners.

I used to ALL the time. Especially when I worked at a golf course. I’d just walk on for free, play 18 in 3 hours or less. Got some good thinking in during those late evening rounds. Twas quite peaceful.

Good, but very incomplete. Needs way more Daniel Day Lewis. He improvised the entire speech in “There Will Be Blood” and some parts of “Gangs of New York,” including the part where he taps his glass eye with the butcher knife. Fucking legend. Can’t wait for “Lincoln” in 12/12/

Might be Duckworth’d, but has anyone heard about this most asinine minor violation in the NCAA passed in 2009? Teams can serve their players bagels, fruit, and nuts for breakfast, but no spreads such as cream cheese, jelly, or butter.
Good to see the NCAA is concentrating on the REAL issues that plague their organization.
/They should all be lined up and shot with rubber bullets.

Sunday Ticket with only one tv is a waste. You gotta have a multi-tv setup even if you don’t have ST – it’s a must.
I’ve found out I’m quite happy with just Redzone as long as I got my 16 Saints games, the Sunday nighters and the Monday nighters. Plenty of football for me.

August 18th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
here’s ATL’s favorite google image of her.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
She’s attractive, but personally, “gorgeous” is a little too wordy for me. 8/10.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:54 AM
It boggles my mind that ATL_Badger finds Amber Tamblyn attractive. I figured she was below his taste, like almost every other woman on Earth.
I’m sure RobJules would find fault in her hair color and a freckle on her shoulder, and thus wouldn’t make sex with her.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
here’s ATL’s favorite google image of her.
Wow. That’s fantastic. Ha.
She’s attractive, but personally, “gorgeous” is a little too wordy for me. 8/10.
Of course… I didn’t bust out the G-bomb. “Gorgeous” is reserved for few and far between, and this Amber girl doesn’t merit that connotation. But’s she’s not ugly.
August 18th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
Exactly, she’s not ugly, she just looks like someone who could be my coworker and I wouldnt be thinking about how gorgeous she was.

Lets make a list of women I’ve gone on record as not finding attractive/would not sleep with on this website:
1. Casey Anthony
2. Obese women
3. Ummmm.. errr.. yeah that’s all I got.

I think he and Tamblyn have been together for 3 or 4 years.

Well yeah… but SG didn’t ask “do you think this girl’s gorgeous?” She just said “do you think this girl is attractive?” BIG difference.

The only way she could do that is by getting big government in the middle of our free market economy. Is that what she wants? She wants to have Washington dictate to the market how much they can make? What happens next, they tell Mom & Pa small businesses how much they can charge?

Also… guess which state created 47% of government jobs in the last 10 years? Yep. Texas. They seem to be pretty anti-government, perhaps we could just take those jobs and send them to states that need them.

True Dat – but something is going on with the gas prices. Oil is at its lowest point in over a year and gas prices are still in the mid- to high- $3′s
Same thing with food prices, etc. Once prices go up, it’s very rare they that go back down. The suppliers already have us bent over. They just think we’re used to the position.
August 18th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
Gas is based upon oil futures purchased in May-June when oil was over $100-$110 a barrel. The oil prices of 82ish right now won’t translate into pump prices until November.

see, she’s even admitting Obama was better at lowering the gas prices than she’ll ever be. come on Bachmann, aim for $1.50 since your economic policies will crash the worldwide economy to a greater scale than in 2008-2009.
August 18th, 2011 at 10:30 AM

She’s a joke, and it’s not at all surprising that the establishment of the GOP is essentially ignoring her. They know she’s unelectable on a national level. They feel the same away about Perry as well. That’s why Paul Ryan and the dude from Jersey are being begged to run.
August 18th, 2011 at 10:39 AM

My super-Republican friend on Facebook has been begging Christie to run since he got elected
August 18th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
Christie would probably be the fattest potential president since Taft. America doesn’t want their presidents to be uber-fatties.
That and the whole taking a helicopter and then having a black sedan drive him 100 yards to his son’s baseball game won’t go over well.
August 18th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
If Christie was smart he’d wait until 2016 and he’d be the favorite on both sides.
August 18th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
yeah, politically it’s foolish for GOP to run any serious contenders this go around. Too much tea party influence will skew all GOP candidates too far right and it’s easier for the dems to move more centrist than it is for the GOP.
August 18th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
One of the reasons it’s so damn hard to defeat an incumbent is that one side has to go to the outskirts of their party to win the nomination. Then they have to walk back half of what they said for months and those in the middle generally don’t take kindly to that. Obama can spend the next 12 months begging the middle to vote for him. That’s a big advantage.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
yeah, and it will be easier the more extreme the GOP gets.
