Georgetown Basketball Players Brawled with Opponents in China, and Fans Threw Bottles and Chairs [UPDATE: With Video]

The Georgetown Hoyas are in China on a basketball tour, and in a game last night against Baiy, tempers flared, players threw punches, and Hoyas’ coach John Thompson pulled his players off the floor after a melee interrupted play. Gene Wang of the Washington Post was at the game and tweeted that chairs and water bottles were being thrown at the Hoyas and the coaching staff. We’ll update this post with video if any emerges.
[UPDATE: Here's the latest, prior to the fisticuffs]:
Earlier in the game, Rocket forward Xu Zhonghao had approached Thompson while he was yelling instruction to his players and then began berating him. Thompson stared at Xu in disbelief before officials halted play for several minutes in the third quarter. Moments later, Bayi player Wang Lei was called for technical foul for arguing a call, and play had to be stopped again.

Hey, was there ever a post here about the Germany soccer fans throwing poop?
August 18th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Or video of the Barcelona fans making monkey chants at Marcelo last night?

One of the first times JTIII has made a solid in game coaching decision.
August 18th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Hideki Irabu killed himself last month? Was there a post on that?
August 18th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
saw some of the duke highlights from china this morning. austin rivers tore up that sino ass

Did they use thehuddle.com to get into the game?
August 18th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
He’s still better than AJ Burnett
August 18th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
JTIII is so fucking terrible.
/If only Gary could’ve gotten his players…
August 18th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Glad that an impartial college basketball analysis like Jay Williams could make the trip with Duke.
It is going to be very easy to hate Austin Rivers.

Nah, you’re good. The day it was posted in the comments on here, there was no fewer than 5 seppuku/hari kari jokes in the first hour.

Chinese Players – Puts hands together, asks Gtown player to open fridge
Gtown player opens fridge, removes Coke, opens it, drinks it.
Chinese player – me Chinese, me play joke, me put peepee in your Coke.
GTown player – punches.

@Buckner- It is great that Georgetown will never be able to get rid of JTIII.
Going to be very interesting to see Turgeon’s first two recruiting classes. 2012 looks like it could be very be good and there is a chance that 2013 is unbelievable.
August 18th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
I’m sure the discussion in the editors room as to whom to send on this assignment took a long time
August 18th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
i can imagine they took it very seriously too and have an incredibly compact and efficient poop throwing motion.
August 18th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
JTIII can do no wrong in this town and it is amazing to me sometimes about how much the team can under perform and the local papers don’t even mention the fact that the coach could be the problem.
August 18th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
Yeah, JTIII, for all his recruiting prowess, can’t coach for shit, the fact they can’t get rid of him is hilarious. It was amazing how much Gary would get ravaged and he’d skate by.
And the Sturgeon is KILLING it, keeping Bino and hiring Hill were strokes of genius. This year will be pretty brutal, but he’s in on so many big recruits that I don’t even care really.

@PKI- It is a joke. Anytime there is a hint of criticism of either of his sons John Thompson takes to the airwaves (of his radio show) and defends them. What is sad is that no one in the DC media calls him on it.
A silver lining of it all is that Georgetown is not super relevant in the DC sports scene. There fans show up and frontrun when the team is playing well but they don’t really have a great fanbase in the area.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
Or about Messican fans throwing bags of Corona/Urine at US soccer players?
The fact that these two things could not be readily told apart on television says much about Coronoa.

@Ill/@Buckner- I agree that it is premature. But it is basically UMD or Kentucky for the Harrison twins. Those two are going to be pretty unstoppable for the year or two they are in college.
I would really love if UMD was to sign Torian Graham who just decommitted from NC State. Anything to screw over Debbie and the Wolfpacks delusional fanbase makes me happy.

TJ…re: miami and the NCAA saying there’s been little talk of the death penalty.
this is a bullshit reason…nobody watches ACC games on TV.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
Well, Shaq Cleare seems like a lock. McGrary is a strong possibility, then the Harrison twins being a possibility is thrilling.
And if we get Graham, I’m going to go apeshit so I can laugh at that joke Yow. She left the Athletic Department a financial mess, too. Dammit I hate her.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
this is a bullshit reason…nobody watches ACC games on TV.
it’s typically a toss-up at noon between a shitty ACC matchup or shitty big 10 matchup.
if doc walker is doing the ACC game, i choose doc. i love listening to him talk about how soft players are.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
But he’s balanced by Doug Gottleib, who hates the air…or smog in this case that Duke breathes.
On AR, I bet him being half white makes it even easier to hate. Nobody is going to give a shit that Harrison Barnes is an cocky and arrogant SOB.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Not anymore, unfortunately. ESPN throws one of the SEC games on at that time. AUburn plays before noon in their first 3 games. I really wish we would have told ESPN no. Kills tailgating, atmosphere, etc. In other words, it makes it just like a Big 10 game.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
McGrary is a strong possibility
i’d call him a maybe, not a strong maybe. he seemed to love the women at UF. if that’s his deciding factor, MD stands zero chance of competing.
the Harrison twins will be Terps in 2013.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Wait, who am I kidding. Of course it isn’t that bad.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
at least with the shitty big 10 matchup it looks like real football instead of the USFL feeder league.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
Kills tailgating, atmosphere, etc. In other words, it makes it just like a Big 10 game
It definitely sucks… but to say 11AM kills tailgating and atmosphere is wrong, especially at a B1G game. Come to Madison sometime. Most people are 6 beers in by 9AM.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
ESPN throws one of the SEC games on at that time.
fuck, i forgot about that.

USFL feeder league.
are you implying that ACC football, while shitty, doesn’t supply the NFL with players? b/c i’d be willing to bet it supplies roughly the same number as the big 10.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
I hope Mark Turgeon is a success at UMD, our league is so awful now
August 18th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
SEC = 35 (2.91 players per team)
Pac Ten= 34 (an incredible 3.4 players per team)
ACC = 33 (2.75 players per team)
Big Twelve = 29 (2.41 players per team)
Big Ten = 28 (2.54 players per team)
Big East= 19 (2.37 players per team)
Cusa = 11 (.916 players per team)
Wac = 8 (.880players per team)
MWC= 7 (.774 players per team)
Sunbelt= 3 (.375 players per team)
MAC = 2 (.160 players per team)
August 18th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
No thanks.
It doesn’t kill it, it impairs it. I’d rather tailgate for 8 hours than chug beers for two.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
I did see that the other day, that worried me.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
im saying ACC uniforms are ugly and USFL-ish. big ten has classy unis.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
I can’t wait for tonight’s TBLAD. Two days ago was the Hurricanes. Last night was the O’s thing that got 27 comments, none past like 7pm EST, and now the Hoyas getting in some dumbshit brawl in China and a bunch of Terrapin fans making fun of GU and their fanbase. There’s gotta be something I like in sports that can be derided to make me quit even more. Maybe not. Maybe there will be a scandal involving my mom.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:29 AM
UMD has a good chance because of playing time but I would bet he ends up at Florida. Guy loves the woman and talked about how Donovan has developed a ton of NBA big men.
I would be happy with Cleare and add Ibeh or Upshaw. Four year guys who can rebound and control the paint.
Harrisons and Britt in 2013.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:29 AM
ugly and USFL-ish.
You sonovabitch! Ugly and USFL uniforms are not two things that go together. You see that tiny little avatar by my name? No? Well, that’s because it’s tiny. But it’s beautiful goddammit!
August 18th, 2011 at 11:33 AM
The Indianapolis Colts are a USFL team? Because our unis are pretty much a colts ripoff.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
I don’t know what the Terps new unis will be, since they’ve taken way too long to release them (the 22nd is the release date, I believe), but I’m assuming they’ll be ugly. Whatever. UA needs to use us like Nike used Oregon, that’d be awesome.

August 18th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
oh probably duke.
August 18th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
Duke….and yes that means the football team, I’m not one of those that conveniently has a different CFB team during football season. Also not offended, I don’t expect the average fan to know what our uniforms look like. I doubt other ACC fans know what our uniforms look like.
August 18th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
It’s always good reading the posts of the inferiority complex personified, otherwise known as the Maryland Terp Basketball fan. Second class citizens in your conference and not even the nationally recognized DC basketball school.

1) Need video of the player yelling at JT3
2) Would love to see what would have happened if he was yelling at JT2.
August 18th, 2011 at 1:33 PM
Funny coming from someone who was so quick to attack Gary William’s and prop up Debbie Yow this past March when NC State had there debacle of a coaching search. For someone who thinks fans like myself, @ill, and @Buckner have an inferiority complex you sure know a ton about UMD basketball.
http://thebiglead.com/index.php/2011/04/06/debbie-yow-vs-gary-williams/#comments
You are right by the way UMD is not the national DC basketball school and that would be because it is the State University of Maryland and not located in DC. I am sorry that you get your panties in a bunch everytime that someone lobs criticism at Georgetown for letting nepotism harm its basketball program but the criticism is valid and not ever addressed by the DC media.
August 18th, 2011 at 1:53 PM
Just up the road on route 1 from DC (Rhode Island Ave) UMD is closer to Georgetown than it is to (1)Baltimore (2) Annapolis. It’s a DC Area (better?)school. But of course you already know this, which is why you’re crying on here about the DC media not going after Thompson III. Of course, as I pointed out in that post you linked, there are plenty of instances where the media didn’t come close to going after Williams or they did his dirty work for him. (graduation rates, John Gilchrist, lazy recruiting, etc.) Yeah, I said lazy recruiting. I’ve said on here before, I don’t like Thompson III’s style, so using that angle for my criticism of Williams doesn’t work. They did a whole article on the Rudy Gay situation in the Post just to excuse Williams’ recruiting deficiencies.
August 18th, 2011 at 2:01 PM
JTII is a good recruiter. Just an average coach. All of the tools are there for it to be a perennial Top 10 team but it isn’t. That says it all.
