There’s Some Early Disagreement About Where Landry Jones Will Be Taken in the 2012 NFL Draft
Mel Kiper released his “big board” back in May for the 2012 NFL draft. Yes, it was 11 months away but that’s what Mel Kiper does. If you are without ESPN Insider, Kiper had Oklahoma QB Landry Jones 10th overall, and Nebraska’s hulking defensive tackle Jared Crick 22nd. Jones put up beastly numbers in 2010 (4,718 yards, 38 TDs) and at 6-foot-4, 230 pounds, he certainly looks the part of an NFL QB. Crick had nine sacks as a sophomore (when he teamed with that Suh fellow) and then 9.5 last year. (Since you probably care, I had both players in my Top 5 in my way-too-early-but-why-the-hell-not 2012 Mock draft.)
A guy by the name of Tony Pauline who covers the draft for Sports Illustrated, had this to say about Jones.
Tough, intelligent signal caller that does a great job commanding and controlling the offense. Always on the same page as his receivers, displays great timing and competitive. Lacks great physical skills and a pocket passer that does not possess classic size or arm strength.
Pauline gave Jones a 4th round grade. (He equally savaged two other Oklahoma players, WR Ryan Broyles and LB Travis Lewis, giving them 3rd and 5th round grades, respectively. In a cursory internet search, those are by far the lowest rankings for either player). I know what you’re thinking – Pauline is low-balling all these guys now, and then rocket them up the chart as they dominate for No. 1 Oklahoma. Except that all three are experienced players and NFL pundits are very familiar with their games. I can’t imagine any of these projections being accurate, but that’s why I’m doing this post – so that we can revisit it closer to the 2012 draft. But I’d love to see what QBs Pauline has ahead of Jones right now.
Pauline wasn’t as critical of Crick, but it was a surprising to see him give the All-American a 2nd round grade:
Explosive, competitive defensive tackle that plays with good mechanics, quickness and intensity. Not overpowering and does not make enough plays on the ball. Potential three technique lineman.
Obviously, there’s plenty of time before the 2012 draft (about eight months, to be exact). And as we saw with Blaine Gabbert, people do come out of nowhere. But Pauline seems to be going out on a short branch here with these crazy predictions. He’ll either look sage or play the, “well, those guys were really great this season and played much better than anticipated” card.

You know what drives me nuts about football? There’s 1000% more discussion about football outside the actual game than actual game play. Today is August 17th, and the discussion is about what’s gonna happen in April 2012.
August 17th, 2011 at 4:40 PM
Nebraska’s defense is going to be nasty this year.
/all I’ve got
August 17th, 2011 at 4:42 PM
i’d love for there to be late disagreement about where he’s going in the 2012 draft. like, after he plays another season
August 17th, 2011 at 4:43 PM
Of all of the things CFB/NFL related, we get a “where might Landry Jones get drafted.” Seems odd to me.

Just reading that part proves that this guy is an idiot.

Jersey: I am god awful at predicting which players hit and which ones don’t, so I can’t really say if this dude’s take on Crick is off or not. I just know that he’s a beast and tore up the B12 last year and I was thrilled when he came back for his senior year (to be a slave to the man, of course).
August 17th, 2011 at 4:46 PM
Dammit, TBL. Just because you didn’t know about him doesn’t mean he wasn’t highly thought of. People were talking about him as a pro the moment he started a game at Mizzou.
August 17th, 2011 at 4:48 PM
so when do we see the NCAA partners in the media start to push out distraction stories?
August 17th, 2011 at 4:48 PM
Husker: You’ll know better than me, but I’ve seen Nebraska play maybe 10 or 11 games since Crick since Crick came to school. Dude does not let guards seem to do their jobs well at all. Crick is going to be a good DT in the league.
August 17th, 2011 at 4:49 PM
I honestly don’t know much about Landry Jones, but one has to think that throwing to Ryan Broyles, having a huge OL and playing against some of the defenses in the Big 12-2 may help inflate stats just a smidge.
August 17th, 2011 at 4:50 PM
I think Crick will be a good 3-4 end. He’s quick for a big dude (6-foot-6, 285).
August 17th, 2011 at 4:51 PM
Not the defenses, actually. Texas, NEB, A&M and Mizzou had stout defenses last year. The system itself is what inflates the stats, though.
August 17th, 2011 at 4:53 PM
Husker, it clearly states in the article he linked…
therefore from my understanding, nobody was talking about him in any capacity.
/checks author of both posts
//never mind
August 17th, 2011 at 4:53 PM
It wouldn’t be insane, but I think he could thrive in a 4-3 with a couble extra pounds. I’m trying to remember which game i was, maybe a couple years ago in Suh’s last year, but dude was getting single teamed and just outworking who ever he was head up against. Busy, busy hands.
August 17th, 2011 at 4:54 PM
If you area defensive player coming out of HS (particularly DL and DB) it would be tough to pass up on Nebraska. The had three DBs taken in the draft last year, will have another one this year (Dennard) and will have another top DL in Crick. Pelini has a crazy history of putting out DL in the pros.
Now about that offense…
August 17th, 2011 at 4:56 PM
that and the fact they’re one of those teams that looks to the sideline en masse for audibles.
August 17th, 2011 at 4:56 PM
QB’s are hit or miss… no use skewering a guy for predicting more ‘miss’ than ‘hit’. I suppose you’d have had a problem with someone giving Ryan Leaf a 4th round grade?
August 17th, 2011 at 4:57 PM
How many people here honestly care about next year’s draft already? Nothing else better to write?
August 17th, 2011 at 4:57 PM
Don’t even get me started on that crap. Nebraska is going to start doing it. The odds of shit being throw around my den have been taken off of the board. Bunch of god damn bitches.
August 17th, 2011 at 4:58 PM
it’s pretty cut and dry these days.
Grade A – proto size from pro-style offense
Grade B – either size or scheme questions
Grade C – supreme athlete coming from a spread-for-dummies offense
Grade D – proto size from pro-style offense that sucked
Grade F – “he could be a great wildcat QB”
August 17th, 2011 at 4:58 PM
Grade doesn’t equal draft position. I wouldn’t be surprised if whoever wrote the grades only had 10 ‘first round grades’ or something.
Of course that would require reading the post better or reading his list, about neither of which I could possibly give even the most miniscule of shits.
August 17th, 2011 at 4:59 PM
We’ve been over this before. It’s faggy, faggy offense that needs to die.

Agree. Watch Bama, UGA, or USC run an offense and then watch Oregon and Missouri. The difference is night and day. One looks like big boy football and the other looks like the little Giants.
August 17th, 2011 at 5:01 PM
Spencer, you forgot the TTU/Houston/Hawaii “not a great athlete or a great arm, won’t ever be anything in the pros, but put up 5,000 yards a year in college’ category”

I have no ill will towards Landry Jones. That being said, please lose miserably so Skip Bayless will STFU forever and ever.

if the Vikings ever move out of Minnesota and I become a NFL free-agent, I may just throw my allegences towards the Browns strictly for the jersey’s. well, that and Arkansas’s own thundercock of course.

I don’t think that’s how it works, though.

and Mel Kiper is a royal douchefuck

I was watching the BTN Badger preview the other day and liked when Russell Wilson was asked why Wisconsin and he listed their having a pro-style offense…just funny how people equate running the ball with being simplistic, not the case with them

August 17th, 2011 at 5:10 PM
I love the draft. It’s actually my favorite thing in the NFL. I might change a little when the Vikings move to L.A. but for now it’s great. hey, with the supplemental draft being pushed back, will that give time for the Hurricanes who are sure to be ineligibilized to enter the supp draft? Ray-Ray Armstrong could be a 2nd or 3rd rounder, couldn’t he?
August 17th, 2011 at 5:11 PM
That many people send you Jets links??
August 17th, 2011 at 5:12 PM
I hate to admit when Nebraska is good, but Husker is right. Pelini has made that D just nasty.
I really hope T Magic brings them down again, but everything I hear in Omaha seems to indicate otherwise.
Jamal Turner is gonna ball if they can get him the rock

Pssshhh. Sure, you can work with the newer 6’4″, 230# model but I prefer the classic 6’4″, 220# QB for pocket passing.

1) I made a bet with a friend that Gabbert would be taken in the top 20 picks of an NFL Draft, independent of how he turns out, I thought he looked like an NFL prospect right away;
2) I don’t see Landry Jones as a first round pick at quarterback, but like I always say, it might be the wispy mustache throwing me off.
