Stop. Just stop. It’s an embarrassment to you and your site. Find someone who knows golf, is willing to write about golf, and has the talent to write about golf. There are about 4 frequent commenters that would do it justice.

If he gets it. The kid whose name was drawn did not take the shot, his twin brother did. Their dad admitted it, and the association may not be giving away the prize. Don’t blame them, either.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:02 AM
Yesterday’s game was the most frustrating one of the year for me. Number fucking one Darnell Mcdonald should never start a game ever again. Number 2 for the umps not giving Lowrie the ’2nd base leeway’ call on the double play ball, but calling Pedroia out at first when the 1st baseman was clearly off the bag. Expletives all around yesterday. And Wake pitches a complete game, go figure.

Also frustrating, the Mariners outfielders getting to every single ball. Ichiro ran down what I thought for sure was a double in the gap for Youk. Oh well, I think thats the last west coast trip this year, at least I hope.

Yea, that same column has been written in some form for the last 20 years. Blah blah blah. The PGA is a major, and it’s going to be a major. Idiots with alternate agendas need to get over it.

There’s almost zero continuity in pro golf. Some people love it, some people loathe it. I’d imagine a lot of mainstream columnists loathe it because they have to pull a story out of their ass about a guy they’d never give the time of day.

Wally – those aren’t my words. They’re quoted. From a column. Plenty of columnists wrote about the PGA.
Did you read this one about how the PGA shouldn’t even be a major anymore?
TBL comes out swinging with the troll gloves. We get it. You don’t like golf unless Tiger is involved. I don’t like soccer unless it’s the world cup. Not sure why you have to hate on the sport after the conclusion of a great tournament.
Also, you quoted from a column that aligned with your point of view (as you are want to do). Would you like me to go quote from the dozens of columns that applauded the play yesterday and think it’s good for the game that some new blood is having success?
August 15th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
if Rick Perry plays up the religious angle, he’s not getting the nomination
You could make the case that BECAUSE Perry will play the religion angle he would win the nomination.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:17 AM
Allen and Cook are SO bad. Tyrell Johnson blows too. But at least Erin Henderson looked pretty good.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:17 AM

There’s plenty of continuity if you watch it every week. I could say there’s zero continuity in a sport like soccer because I only watch once every 4 years, but then I would be trolling.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:18 AM
You’re right. Your word was
And the backlash of the PGA has been going on for years. To be honest, the AAC setup was 10x better than the US Open this year. Just because the big names couldn’t handle the setup better than a rookie doesn’t mean much.
He’s not exactly a no-name either. His dad is a PGA Teaching Pro and his aunt, Pat Bradley WAS the LPGA Tour for about 10 years.
I guess we should all be proud that you didn’t use “Some guy named” at the beginning of a line about the game’s 4th major. Well done.

Also — about the PGA. From about 5:30 to the 2nd hole of the playoff was fantastic TV. I get the golf hate from TBL b\c there were no A-listers, but that was as good of a finish as any major this year.

It’s really strange… isn’t TBL in the pro-playoff contingent for CFB… the contingent that would like to see all 120 D1 schools have a shot at the title? Yet he wants golf to have a certain BCS tinge to it so that only the big guys have a shot at winning. Seems hypocritical.
Also… I’m hearing Dufner has some sort of smokeshow for a fiance. I need this confirmed. I won’t believe it until I see it.

August 15th, 2011 at 9:28 AM
Sports worshippers love Tebow’s intangibles. Heart. Leadership. Toughness. Character. Desire. Work ethic. Presence. They are things that can’t be seen or measured. They are the foundation of football as a faith. The worshippers believe Tebow will win because he is a winner, so help me God. To believe in him is to believe in the wonder and magic and hope of sports, and the mythology that surrounds them.
I stopped here. The fire and brimstone prose was enough.
Was that from LeBatard’s column? Oof. I thought he was better than that.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:28 AM
I think other people have said this, but the golf thing is the difference between liking a sport and liking an easy narrative.
It’s fine. I don’t watch golf except on rare occasions when there is drama (or what I perceive to be drama). But I also don’t say I “like golf”. I really don’t.

August 15th, 2011 at 9:31 AM
Have you seen Dan Wolken’s haircut? I don’t think you should be counting him as a golf literate.
I had plenty to say about this in TBLAD last night.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:31 AM
How does that not compute? I like golf. I also haven’t played a single round this season. It’s expensive and finding the time to hit a course in between other commitments is difficult. I also don’t have a newborn but I bet that makes finding time to golf a little harder.
I’ll usually only play golf if it’s free. I don’t think that makes me the opposite of a golf fan. It just makes me frugal.

Any one of the 10 teams can win the Big East this fall, that doesnt make it good football.

I think the Dems are scared shitless by the fact that the Repubs could theoretically have the House, Senate (23 Dems up for reelection next year) and WH all going their way next year.
Romney is the only guy with a shot at winning right? Please tell me that Bachman, Perry, and Palin will just be fodder for late night comedians.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
i hope so, they certainly have the narratives to work for them if they can just control the conversation for once.
if i were them i’d try to get the backing of some of the well known super rich to state repeatedly “please tax us more, we can sacrifice and contribute” the way that warren buffet just did today.
i’d like to see perry, bachmann or palin try to reason against warren buffet’s assertations.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
no, there are about 60 legitimately great golfers worldwide and i just made a pretty good case why bradley’s one of them.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
I think it’s more likely that the Dems will have all 3 than the Repubs…but neither seem likely. I do find it interesting that Nate Silver seems to favor a model whereby the Dems take back the House, keep the Senate, but Obama loses.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
The odds of the reverse of that aren’t remote, though, either.
Everyone hates Congress (as they fucking should) right now. Who knows what is going to happen.

That was a great piece. Should have been linked in the Round Up.

I think it would be much more entertaining for Ron Paul to make it far.. I kinda like his style of blasting Dems and his fellow Repubs.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
if romney didn’t have to win the GOP nomination I’d say he has a shot to win…but he won’t, so i really do think we’ll see a perry, bachmann or palin somewhere on the ticket.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:52 AM
and this is so fucking retarded…the great golfers were in this tournament, believe it or not, and only adam scott and lee westwood were within sniffing distance of the lead. they just sucked.
but by all means, if you think watching phil mickelson three-putt is more exciting than the finish on sunday…

Oh, I would love for Ron Paul to run… I just keep hearing he doesn’t have even the slightest shot. Which makes me sad, because he seems to be light years ahead of everyone other than Romney in terms of intelligent ideas and overall intelligence.

Out of the current GOP nominees — Romney has to be the person most likely to beat Obizzle. I don’t think Bachmann has the appeal to the center-right of the party and the rest of the country doesn’t know much about Perry so we’ll have to wait and see on him. If Palin would enter, she has huge fundraising power and a very loyal base so she could have a chance to get the nomination. Though she still has to decide.

I think his faith is an important part of his life and I think he probably truly believes that he is going to be the candidate for the religious right, which is why he had the highly publicized rally. But he’s no idiot. I think he will distance himself from that as the campaign drags on. The religious right along cannot win him the election.
I have no problem with being motivated by faith but if he continues to say he will only rely on his faith, or that what he has been done is a direct result of his faith, he’ll certainly lose me. As of yet, I haven’t paid enough attention even though he is my governor.
August 15th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
I just looked at the current list of Republican candidates and had a good laugh. I completely forgot that Santorum and Gingrich were still running. Oy. If Paul runs as an independent I might throw him a vote.
/fuck these 2 parties
August 15th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
the benefit that bachmann and perry are enjoying now is being mostly unknown to a majority of the general election public. they are known in the right wing circles and tea party camps. those people easily look over the general election flaws that will doom a poorly run campaign once they go national.
palin has a shot, but she says so much stupid shit that the media coverage of her would just lead to another meltdown when she “Goes rogue” against her own campaign managers.

I caddied for Rick Santorum right after he got smoked by Bob Casey in the PA senate election. He was a jerk. I openly root against him and I am a registered republican.

Romney has to make too many concessions to the extreme wing of his party to be a viable national candidate. The Republicans are now what the Democrats were considered in the 80′s.
August 15th, 2011 at 10:01 AM

Good point on Bachmann & Perry — as they become more in the public eye and everything they do get scrutinized their potential viability as a candidate will be on the table.
There was a really interesting article on Palin awhile back about how her supporters invite the media critisim b\c it feeds into her ‘underdog\lamestream media\ect’ image. Also, when she has her slip ups (Paul Revere, Alaska-Russia thing, No Magazines, Ect.) it reinforces her as just a ‘regular gal from Alaska’. It makes the people who dont like her like her less — but the people that like her, like her more.

I’ll buy this. With him being a Mormon, I doubt he’ll be able to assuage the Evangelicals, or the Southern Baptists. He can only carry his family values and fiscal expertise so far.

once they are further in the public eye the onus then falls to the media to accurately portray and cover what the candidates do.
in a perfect world where the media would call out rick perry on the secession talk and god solving problems talk, and the cure the ghey issues and preferring defaulting on our debts for bachmann the problem would solve itself…
however, this will not happen. msnbc will call them out on it, fox will defend them and CNN will just repeat what both networks say w/o vetting either statement for the truth.
August 15th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
I would like an option on the ballot that says: “I don’t care for any of these candidates. Please choose a few more and try again.”

Sadly, this is true. Most of the outrage from the whole debt ceiling debacle seemed to be coming from the media and these nebulous polls. But as long as we can tune in to Jersey Shore and attempt to get rich by becoming a YouTube sensation, no worries.

we’ve got plenty of parties out there, the only problem is that only two make it up to the national ticket. tea party and GOP should be two separate tickets, progressives and democrats should be two separate tickets.
independants and libertarians should have their own ticket.
lumping all idealogies into two parties is making the whole thing worse.
August 15th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
it is sad really, how the Conservative movement and Fox News have emasculated CNN by accusing them of liberal bias to the point where they are now.
August 15th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
If the parties were fine, I would suggest that the approval rating of just about everyone on the government tit working in Washington would be much higher.
No, I’d say the two big parties are pretty fucking far from “fine”.
August 15th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
Yep, this right here.
August 15th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
Those people in Washington aren’t there by birth right, they were elected. If people are that dissatisfied, they should become more engaged than enraged. Most of those polls are useless anyway. It’s easy to get a person to say they’re dissatisfied with Congress as a whole, but so what? The electorate only elects one congressman and two Senators.
August 15th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
I think those parties do have their own ticket. But it’s alot easier financially and exposure wise to run as a Democrat or Republican with leanings towards one of those parties. Also, most people aren’t strictly progressive, libertarian etc. anyway.
August 15th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
.
Most people aren’t strictly conservative or liberal either although you wouldn’t know it from the way the media and the current crop of politicians act. This all or none, my way or no way type of thinking is what is killing progress.
August 15th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
not a lot of people are strictly republican or democrat either.
it’s a matter of choice, really. you’d see stronger parties that are more apt to stick to their ideals, unafraid to stick to their guns.
ideally you’d have 3-4 parties with the best candidate getting upwards of 40-45% of the vote to win.
August 15th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
hey SC, I didnt read the Lebatard column as him supporting Tebow. That passage you quoted, IMO, is him stating what the consensus opinion is of the Tebow supporters. Lebby just doesn’t understand where the Tebow hatred is coming from.
