Cubs Place Carlos Zambrano On Disqualified List
The Chicago Cubs placed clinically insane pitcher Carlos Zambrano on the disqualified list yesterday, which means he will receive no pay and have no part in team activities for 30 days. The move comes following Friday night’s debacle in Atlanta that began with Zambrano serving up five home runs and getting tossed after throwing at Chipper Jones, and finishing with Big Z cleaning out his locker and leaving Turner Field on his own.
He has reportedly told people he may retire, and retirement might be his only option anyway. Seriously, who would be willing to give this guy any kind of contract at this point? He’s likely done in the sport whether he wants to be or not.
Here’s Alfonso Soriano’s take on the Zambrano situation:
“He’s been doing a lot of things —not one, not two. He’s a big man, but I think mentally he’s weak … I think he needs to find some guy to talk to him because he’s got a problem. A lot of people try to help him, but he doesn’t let them help, because that’s him.”
Mentally weak? Fantastic. I didn’t know Soriano had it in him. Good for him.
My only questions regarding this situation are of course unimportant ones: Did Big Z have to hail a cab back to the hotel when he left Turner Field? Did the Cubs still pay for his flight home or was Zambrano forced to scour Orbitz for a reasonable deal? Sadly, we may never know for sure.

I fully expect him to resurface next year with the Yankees or Red Sox.

No chance Boston takes on this psycho

If professional sports have taught us anything, it’s that if you can still play at a reasonably high level (and Zambrano is at least a servicable number 3-4 starter), some team somewhere will be willing to look past your transgressions.
See Bradley, Milton or Everett, Carl

@DemBones: The unusual part of the Zambrano situation is how long he’s lasted with one team. Usually maniacs like him would be on their third or fourth team by now. The Cubs have obviously been idiots during this ordeal too.
He’s only 30 though, so some struggling team like the Orioles will probably offer him next to nothing for an opportunity to play again.

DemBones, if this were pre-Theo Epstein Red Sox, I could guarantee Zambrano would be in Boston. They don’t bring in these types of players anymore, just the old guys with nothing left.

Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.

I would like to put Darnell McDonald on the disqualified list for batting under .200 and still having a job in the Majors

Don’t follow the Cubs all that closely. Wonder if they put up with him because they felt his talent level was high enough to outweigh the distractions. If I’m not mistaken, he also acted repetant a few times too.
Still, an offseason of saying the right things, highly publicized anger management classes, and getting into the best shape of his career will be enough justification for some team to bite.

Although with Big Z, he just might be crazy enough to walk away for good.

The Cubs are 52-68. If they were 68-52, I’d say his tantrums are worth dealing with. But since they are not, I’m inclined to say that they should put him on the market. He’s not the key to their future success.
Of course I say that as a fan of a team who has traded away just about every notable player possible in the past year, so take my stance with a grain of salt.

Big Z also makes a lot of money and other teams weren’t willing to take on the contract even with the Cubs’ offer to pay some of the salary. Honestly, this guy makes Milton Bradley and Carl Everett seem sane.

Different types of insanity. Zambrano is in the volatile insanity category while Everett and his denial of dinosaur existence is in the funny-scary category.

Carl everett = sarah palin, michelle bachmann, christine o’donnell, glenn beck type insane

Finally reaching the end of the ESPN book.
Best part so far is Chris Berman pretending he has no idea who Bill Simmons is.
