Weekly Top Five: Football, Blue Jays, Hope Solo Nude, and Watch The Throne
Each week Tim “Amy” Ryan and I will recap some of the bigger stories from the lively week in athletics. It’s a completely original idea that we started over 18 months ago. Every time this post appears, a riot breaks out in London in an impressively elegant manner. As always, please remember to be as irrational as possible when interacting with your fellow TBL commenters.
1. The Glorious Return of Football!
CRM — Well, kinda. It was just preseason. I only watched a few snaps live between Parks & Rec and 30 Rock reruns. I heard multiple starters made appearances though. I’m in the “preseason is too long” camp and can’t wait for a real football Sunday. On a related note, I had my first Sam Adams Octoberfest last night. I love the Fall.
TSH — The growing smell of football is slowly beginning to flirt with my nostrils which leaves me craving, well, football — but also buffalo wings. I don’t think it’s possible to ever tire of buffalo wings. Discovering a place with really good wings is as satisfying as swatting someone in basketball.
2. Hope Solo Nude Google Results
TSH — Unlike soccer, nudity moves the needle. Seriously, soccer has made the Weekly Top Five and there’s no World Cup to speak of, but there is skin. Whatever the shoot ends up looking like it will surely surpass Hope’s goalie uniform, so stop complaining that you won’t see enough.
CRM — The amount of love the ESPN The Magazine The Body Issue gets despite never actually showing us anything is impressive. Having said that, Hope Solo posing nude with well-placed soccer balls will surely take her soccer to the next level. I thought during the World Cup last month that soccer was ready to make the leap and this just proves that theory. Look at us talking soccer in August.
3. Watch The Throne
TSH — I have yet to purchase the album but I always take my time with these things unless it’s something I’ve been thirsting to listen to, like when Eminem returned with “Recovery,” but I do know chances are high I will enjoy this one. I still strongly believe Jay-Z’s greatest musical contribution to sports was “Big Pimpin” because it allowed Derek Bell to use it as his at-bat music during his tenure with the Mets.
CRM — After my initial tongue-in-cheek review of WTT, I’ve listened a few more times and I’m not sure the album holds up to the hype. It’s still good, but it’s definitely not the all-time classic album that people had hoped for. I guess we’ll just have to wait for Detox to drop.
4. NBA Lockout
CRM — Why must I wait to watch Jimmer play basketball? I’m stuck watching him practice cheerleading.
TSH — Stephen A. Smith subbed in for Colin Cowherd today and discussed the NBA’s predicament long enough that I found myself suddenly yearning for this lockout to end. Upon the show’s completion, Stephen A. drove directly to Long Island to deejay a Bar Mitzvah.
5. Blue Jays Stealing Signs
TSH — The countless references to the “man in white” reminds me just how much I miss Lost, especially the irreplaceable “Desmond Face.” As for the Blue Jays, they aren’t exactly ripping through the competition (59-58, 29-28 at home). At least the heartless Patriots won a ton of games during several years of disgraceful cheating.
CRM — Those dirty rotten cheating Blue Jays! While this is one of the unwritten rules of baseball that I kind of agree with, the idea of unwritten rules remains comical. Baseball. What a sport.
Honorable Mention
Urijah Faber interview … Rudy Fernandez’s girl … Barry Zito’s girl … something else by Stephen Douglas … asshole usher … a fucking hat!
This is a damn sweet knockout.

This Week In Retarded Pictures of Snooki
TSH — Glasses tend to make some people look smarter. I don’t believe that to be the case for Snooki.

Dissapointed to see Wake. UP. and not have it be the Rage Against the Machine Song. Ride the Lighting is good, though.

Turned it off immediately. That was almost as bad as Skip Bayless cohosting Mike and Mike. WTF, ESPN?

Thanks for the timing on this update. I bought it after your review (knowing that it was over the top, but you still liked it)…and I have listened to it, and been terribly underwhelmed.
You have too much power and influence to be toying with the serfs Lord Douglass.

Menarky, I saw the blog post on chron.com you were talking about. If that’s true, and Beebe really said that to A&M, then holy shit he’s got a pair of solid brass ones.

Why isn’t the lady in the teaser picture for this post on the homepage also in the post? That’s poor form, CRM.

so women’s soccer has to have their “hottest” player pose nude to garner any kind of attention after the world cup is over and they are still going to manage to fuck it up. nice.

Just saw an ESPN story in which Beebe specifically denied having told A&M that UT is the key to the Big 12.
TCU is switching to the Big East next year. While the Big 12 is undoubtedly the better place for them, I have to imagine that the Big East would have some sort of breach of contract lawsuit it could throw out there if TCU were to renege on joining the conference.

Ride the Lightning might be my favorite Kirk solo ever. So damned awesome.
Speaking of Metallica, I like many was way into them in junior high through high school, but they lost me around Re-Load (Load seemed like an aberration) then lost me for good after the embarrassing St. Anger. So it took me forever to get around to listening to Death Magnetic… and it’s really effing awesome. Did this album win back anyone else?

I think they figure that they have more in common culturally with some of the schools in the SEC than with the hippies in Austin.

It’s a shakedown! A shakedown I tellz ya!
I would just love to know how many closeted members of Congress there really are.
There was a Senator from Wyoming in the 1050s named Lester Hunt whose son was about to be exposed by Joe McCarthy for having been arrested for soliciting a male undercover copy in Lafayette Park. Hunt was so distraught at the thought of his son being exposed that he committee suicide in his capital hill office.

The best thing about Modelo is the moment when you are smashed and nearly knock your beer over and realise you certainly would have knocked it over if you were not drinking a Modelo.

Worst hangover you’ve ever had…..and, go!
Mine: I drank about 16, 17 Cranberry and vodkas (no, not on my period) over the course of about 8-9 hours. Blacked out drunk in a hotel room, on my back. Woke up to puke all over the bed and me….and had to walk around downtown Chicago the entire next day. I’ve never been so happy not to die and wished death upon myself at the same time before. It’s interesting.
August 12th, 2011 at 4:46 PM
Worst hangover you’ve ever had…..and, go!
Difficult. I think my worst ever though was still my freshman year of college. I was drinking in my suite mate’s room. Beer, Southern Comfort, and tequila…in no particular order. Was already pretty drunk when someone dared me to do 5 shots in a row, three of tequila and two of Southern Comfort 100 Proof (the black label, not the pussy 70 proof white label stuff). I did them all in a row, though I don’t remember anything past the third one.
I woke up the next morning in my room in a pool of my own vomit. But it was quite the circuitous route there. I had apparently walked my friend Ashley back to her dorm across campus. But then she realized her cell phone was still in my room. So we walked back. By the time we were walking back, I was (I’m told) stumbling everywhere and she decided that she would walk back by herself lets campus cops see me. I tried to walk her back anyway, fell down the stairs in the dorm (my room was on the second floor), started to pass out in the first floor hallway, before my roommate woke up, dragged me back up the stairs and threw me on my bed, fortunately face down (though I think that was by chance and not by design).
My head felt the next day like I had been stabbed repeatedly. My vision was blurred, my mouth was the worst, driest cotton mouth ever. But my stomach was so messed up I couldn’t even hold water down. I sat in the shower for an hour with the water on, drinking some of it, and then immediately throwing it back up.
Really, death would have been kinder.
August 12th, 2011 at 4:46 PM
The fuck did everyone go?
August 12th, 2011 at 4:47 PM
I’d have to say about 12 years ago, staying at a hotel with a bunch of friends, spent probably 4 hours in the hot tub slamming beers after an all day drinkathon. woke up the next morning and went to McD’s already feeling rough. took about 2 bites from a double quarter pounder and that’s all I could take down. had to ride home with the worst driver I have ever been in a vehicle with. laid on the couch the rest of the day sweating and wanting to throw up, but couldn’t. just awful.
August 12th, 2011 at 4:49 PM
Hooray El Salvador!
Indeed, my father’s side of the family is from there!
August 12th, 2011 at 4:49 PM
I responded jck. It just took awhile to type my story.
August 12th, 2011 at 4:53 PM
worst hangover was any that i had when working in a grocery store fish dept. had to open every other sunday, and biz was slow, so the time went by so slowly. worst part of a hangoveer is not the headache, its the fatigue
August 12th, 2011 at 4:57 PM
ms, your stories look a lot like mine. not remembering poor behavior and bad decisions. was always so freaky that you could function yet not remember. seemed like possession.
i did a number on a gf’s dorm room one halloween. dressed up like eddie from iron maiden, got hammered, went to her place, got mad for some reason, threw shit around, then puked
August 12th, 2011 at 4:58 PM
i did a number on a gf’s dorm room one halloween. dressed up like eddie from iron maiden, got hammered, went to her place, got mad for some reason, threw shit around, then puked
Yep, I’ve done things like that before. I used to be an awful drunk. Now I just get sleepy and irritable. And I talk way too loud.
August 12th, 2011 at 5:02 PM
I think it’s the constant feeling like you could puke if you move the wrong way too fast.
August 12th, 2011 at 5:03 PM
I’m a bit of a loud-talked myself. fortunately I have a buddy who drinks faster than me and is much, much louder, therefore rendering me almost mute.
August 12th, 2011 at 5:03 PM
About 3 years ago I got wasted at a Brewers game. Dont remember anything past the 5th inning. I remember going to the bathroom at the stadium and popping a vicodin and drinking beer like it was water.
The next morning I woke up with 2 holes in my wall, my garbage upside down on top of my entertainment center, the remote for the TV shattered, and pizza sauce all over the kitchen and living room floor.
I have no idea what happened. Scary.
August 12th, 2011 at 5:07 PM
I have had quite a number of episodes where I literally do not know what happened after a certain time. It’s scary and you wonder what the fuck you did and lucky you didnt do something to end up in jail.
I have since cut back on drinking quite a bit cuz its the worst feeling in the world when you wake up and dont remember shit.
August 12th, 2011 at 5:09 PM
Jesus. Too many to choose from, but probably the first (and only, I guess) time I was in New Orleans. Probably mixed about 8 different liquors, but it was the absinthe that did me in. Don’t recall a piece of the night after that, but my wife and her friends evidently just kept dragging me around to different places, where I would sleep face-first on the bar. Supposedly no bartender had a problem with this.
The next day was like a worse version of the Bataan Death March, starring only me and a toilet that couldn’t flush all the way.
August 12th, 2011 at 5:11 PM
I have excised large chunks of my memory this way. Also, turns out that it makes me converse with people on Facebook that I haven’t actually spoken to in decades. I only know this the way that Burroughs knew of his bad years in Algeria: the text remains.
August 12th, 2011 at 5:12 PM
Yeah me too. I used to pop a vicodin and drink beer and then pop another one hours later. Those times were the worst lookin back at it. I would get wayyyyy to fucked up and forget shit.
August 12th, 2011 at 5:13 PM
You guys need to just drink and not pop the pill. Save the pill for the next day when you really need it.
Best hangover cure is xanax and pot.
August 12th, 2011 at 5:15 PM
100% correct sir!!!
The next day I would be super pissed cuz its basically wasting the vicodin. I used to get super drunk and smoke all my weed too even though when I was super drunk weed didnt do much at that point. Something about being in that state of drunkeness where you think if you keep smoking a lot yo eventually will get super high, but you never do.
Just a waste of good nuggets.
August 12th, 2011 at 5:20 PM
Best hangover prevention though is a glass of water and a hydocodone. I had several leftover after an appendectomy last year…drank a ton and was fresh as a daisy the next day each time.
August 12th, 2011 at 5:22 PM
This right here. Oxycodones work too.
August 12th, 2011 at 5:37 PM
Freshman year, woke up with a raging hangover. Decided that a shower would do me good. Got in the shower, realized I needed to shit. Got out, had forgotten my towel and some asshole left a window open during the winter in Troy, NY. Went to take the dump shivering then came to the realization that I had to vomit as well. Not sure how I managed it without making a huge mess but I did. Slept until the next day and then did it again.
