Knile Davis Injured at Practice, and Arkansas’s BCS Dreams Have Been Put on Hold [UPDATE: Davis Out For the Season]
Arkansas returns multiple skill players on offense, seven defensive starters are back, and most importantly, the schedule is favorable. Back-to-back trips to a BCS bowl game seems like an attainable goal for Bobby Petrino’s Razorbacks.
And then junior running back Knile Davis went down with an injury Thursday at practice, and all those plans are on hold.
Davis was carted off the field following a leg injury – knee, ankle, nobody’s sure – and the Razorbacks have been mum on the severity of the injury. [UPDATE: Arkansas confirmed this morning that Davis is out for the year with an ankle injury.] The media was cut off from asking Razorbacks about the injury. Some Arkansas “insiders” on various websites claim Davis is done for the year – or a large portion of it – with an ankle injury. (Sensational tweets like this are making the rounds: Knile Davis’ scream was “so loud it will haunt us in our dreams.”)
I’d say Davis – who led the SEC in rushing last year – is probably the 3rd best returning back in the SEC after Trent Richardson (Alabama) and Marcus Lattimore (South Carolina). Davis is probably one of the Top 15 backs in the country. Obviously his loss would be massive to an offense that has the potential to score 40 points a game.
Davis finished last year with a flurry – 187 yards vs. Mississippi State, 152 vs. LSU and 139 vs. Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl. Despite only becoming the starter mid-season, and playing on a team featuring NFL QB Ryan Mallett, Davis still managed to rush for 1,322 yards (6.5 ypc).
The Razorbacks will be 3-0 heading into Tuscaloosa to play Alabama Sept. 24. They’ll obviously need Davis to beat the Tide. The following week Arkansas plays Texas A&M at the Jerry Dome. If they lose those two games, Arkansas will have no room for error the rest of the way. The Razorbacks close the season against LSU on November 25th.

This is a HUGE blow. Davis is the second RB they’ve lost with Broderick Green going down in the spring with an ACL. The backups will now have to prove they can tote the rock or Wilson will have to deal with more DBs covering the field.

Borken ankle is what Twitter is saying. Not sure if that’s been confirmed though.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
Dammit dammit dammit. This ruins about half of the futures I was gonna take.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:08 AM
update: Arkansas confirms he’s out for the year.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
Sorry ark. There’s still room if you want to come to Athens now.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:13 AM
Not to sound macabre, but this injury helps South Carolina out a ton. Going to Arkansas was their toughest game of the year in the SEC. It just got a little bit (maybe a lot) easier.

Achilles tendon seems to be a popular injury this offseason in the NFL and college. Odd.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:17 AM
Huge loss. This guy destroyed LSU last year.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
139 against a bunch of cheaters is pretty darn good.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
Hate seeing kids injured. Wonder if his contract had any guaranteed money or if it was all in performance escalators.
/SEC’d

He’s not playing at Auburn, dude.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
Broken Fibula right down by his ankle is what I am hearing.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
it really does suck, but there are some other backs that will be able to step in. Dennis Johnson was the starter last year over Knile before he got hurt and lost for the season so he should be able to tote the ball well enough. it still all comes down to how well the OL plays anyways. if they can open holes it shouldn’t matter a whole lot who is running the ball.
I honestly don’t think this wins or loses Arkansas any more games. sure he was a big part of the offense, but good teams should be able to fill voids. I guess if it is going to happen, better now than halfway through the season.

Cause Auburn is certainly the only team in the SEC that would do such a thing.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
That sucks. Fall camp is always a time where you hold your breath and hope no one gets hurt.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
Nile Kinnick > Knile Davis
Sorry. I don’t get to reference the great Nile Kinnick very often. I’m not pooping on your RBs grave, ark. Do us all a favor and make sure the Hogs beat the Bayou Bengals this year and we’ll all be happy campers.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
Higher ypc and rushing yards than both Richardson and Lattimore. One could says Davis is better than both.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
Not the only…but the one that is most likely do actually pay a player directly. You have to understand that Auburn is always going to be the little brother to Alabama, but Auburn has a group of very competitive and very rich boosters who will do anything to win.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
This is kind of retarded.
Lattimore is the most important player to any team in the SEC. Without him SC will have to deal with Garcia winning games, and they don’t want to have to do that. His YPC are okay (4.8 I think) but he’s so consistent at getting that average with each carry. Davis was boom or bust with his runs, but Lattimore is steady Eddy. He’s a horse.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
Damn! You mean SEC players don’t heal faster than their Big 10 counterparts?
August 12th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
I laughed
August 12th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
like I said, trying to remain optimistic. they still have 2 RB’s with experience, plus a freshman or two that are unproven, but will get a shot. Dennis Johnson will be good, he’s got experience as an SEC back and knows the offense.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
I wouldn’t say he is better, but he is on the same level. not many agree with me, but Knile doesn’t get anywhere close to the hype that these two do even though the numbers say otherwise. that’s what happens when you have a stud WR corps.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
Cause Auburn is certainly the only team in the SEC that would do such a thing.
Not the only…but the one that is most likely do actually pay a player directly.
So you’re saying that he’ll get his payments in a more round-about-way? Like stock options?
August 12th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
You can remain optimistic, but saying that losing one of the best 15 running backs in the nation (perhaps top-10) won’t affect the wins and losses of the team is…odd.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
Has Arkansas ever won the SEC football title? A&M better be careful what they wish for.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
They’ll throw hot white bitches at him at ARK. At Auburn the hot white bitches comes with bricks of cash strapped to their tits.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Tough break (no pun). The cynic in me wonders if Bobby posted notes to all their lockers and said he was going to take a year off.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
Remembering Petrino’s stable of backs (a few unknowns) at Louisville, makes me think they might be all right. In fact, this is somewhat similar to when Michael Bush went down his senior year there.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
I love this logic. People need to be reminded that having the best QB (IN THE BIG EAST) and losing the best running back (IN THE BIG EAST) means nothing when you’re now playing LSU, Alabama, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Mississippi State and Auburn.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
not outright, they’ve won the SECW 3 times, lost in the championship game every time though. atm will be a middle of the road team in the SEC, better than ole piss, I’m thinking along the lines of S.Carolina and Arkansas, maybe a little lower.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
IN THE BIG EAST?
August 12th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
I tend to agree with this. I think A&M will be a consistent 8-4 type of team with the occasional 2-3 year run of 9-10 wins and similar runs of 6-6. They have the cash, talent pool and desire to do well, so they won’t be an Ole Miss or Miss St, but they can be SC and Ark.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
I’m just saying that before last year, no one outside of Arkansas even knew who Knile Davis was, and the guy that was starting in front of him before he got injured is back healthy this year. if the O-Line can gel together, open holes and protect the QB, I really think they will be ok.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
They’ll be okay. They still have the nasty group of WRs and Petrino running the show, but they’re definitely going to take a step back and that is before we’ve seen what their OL looks like.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
as an aside, it’s funny how all my friends, who are Razorback fans but know very little about football, have suddenly not only become doctors, but are also spawns of Jimmy the Greek and now know how the season is playing out. my phone has been blowing up all morning and it is only 10:00.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
Third best back in the SEC, huh? I don’t think I would trade Michael Dyer’s last 50 yards from 2010/11 with anything Knile Davis has done or will ever do.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
so Auburn being in the NCG vaults Dyer into the top RB spot. got it.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Well, that’s because you’re an idiot.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Bummer of an injury. Was looking forward to seeing Knile play this year. And the SEC is just loaded with backs this year. Loaded.
August 12th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
Dyer’s a better runner, and those fifty yards showed why. But, yes, those fifty yards meant a national title, and since Arkansas won’t be winning a national title any time soon, I would take those yards. Besides, Davis is maybe the fifth best back Arkansas has had in the last decade or so. Or “was.”
August 12th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
50 yards makes an SEC RB now?? WOW. What NFL team did you say you scout for….50 yards at a time?
