30 Minutes or Less Review
30 Minutes or Less was very funny to me. In fact, there’s a simple formula to figure how much you’ll like it. Let’s say we all rate movies using the classic 4-star system. I’m aware this is almost too convenient since the movie poster features four actors, but it’s really that simple.
You can go right down the line – Aziz Ansari, Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride, Nick Swardson. You literally check off which of these guys you think is funny. After you’ve picked out who you think is funny, decide how much you like Michael Peña. Did you find him funny in the second season of Eastbound & Down? If so, add a half star. It’s that simple.
For me, it goes Aziz, Kenny Powers and Nick Swardson. I’m a huge fan of Jesse Eisenberg, but he’s never the funny part of his films. I get to cheat because I saw the movie, but Michael Peña was pretty funny. As a comedy, I’d give 30Minutes or Less 3 1/2 stars out of four. The simple reason? It was funny to me.
Now, not everyone agrees. Shit. Almost no one agrees. It’s just 41% on Rotten Tomatoes, but I’m OK with that. Grandma’s Boy is 18%. Super Troopers is 35%. Tommy Boy is 46%. Critics don’t always get comedies. They tend to let things like plot and realism creep into their review and look at a comedy as a film, instead of a funny movie.
Jesse Eisenberg plays a more hyper character than we’ve seen him in previous films like The Social Network and Adventureland. He’s even more hyper than he is in Zombieland, but that’s in the right direction. Fittingly, the film was directed by Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer.
Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride and Nick Swardson all do what they usually do and if you like what they usually do, you should love 30 Minutes or Less. Aziz plays the wise-ass best friend who helps Jesse Eisenberg rob a bank to save his life. Danny McBride plays Kenny Powers without the mullet. It’s really the only character Danny McBride plays, but fuck it. I still find it funny. That’s why I watch 6 minute K-Swiss commercials. Nick Swardson usually plays effeminate for laughs. For 30 Minutes, he plays more of a dummy (though an amateur explosives expert) and nixes the limp wrists.
Then there’s Michael Peña who is barely in the trailers. Peña is the surprise of the film, playing some weird gangster with an indecipherable speech impediment. I’m sorry, a hitman with a lisp is just funny to me.
The plot of the film is simple (and too stupid not to be real) – Danny McBride needs to kill his father so he can inherit his money. So he hires a hitman. To pay the hitman, he straps a bomb to a guy and forces him to rob a bank. It’s based on the collar-bomb case from 2003, though the people behind the case deny it. Just look at the similarities.
If you’re familiar with the case and/or seen the video (it’s online), you might not be looking to find humor in 30 Minutes or Less. A pizza guy’s head exploding live on television doesn’t really tickle the funny bone. That doesn’t happen in the movie though. The movie would have been a whole lot darker if it had.
As it stands, I laughed a lot. It was four actors I enjoy saying funny things. Of the movies I’ve reviewed here, it’s probably going to go down as my favorite. (To review, it would be up against Bridesmaids, Hangover II, Horrible Bosses) 30 Minutes or Less had me laughing and the entire theater was laughing most of the time too. Not sure how that will translate into box office success (5iVnal De5tination 5 should dominate the weekend), but it will definitely end up in my movie collection.

been looking forward to this movie since I saw the first trailer. It’s going to be right in my wheelhouse.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
I subtract a star because of Eisenberg. Still looking forward to seeing this.

never go by critics on RT, always go by audience.
learned this the hard way by ignoring both for AVP:requiem. Worst. Most horrible. movie. ever.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
I did the checking and the math and I ended up with a half a check.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
So, the question is – did you find it funny, CRM?
August 12th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
Still don’t see the lasting appeal of Bridesmaids
August 12th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
I thought everyone had decided that Danny McBride and Nick Swardson weren’t funny anymore and that Aziz Ansari never was. Isn’t that what we settled on?
August 12th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
McBride is overrated, Swardson tries too hard and I don’t care for Michael Cerasenberg. Aziz and Peña are funny, though. I’ll probably wait for the laserdisc.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
That’s raycess.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
I have no interest to see this movie.
Has anyone heard Jessie Eisenberg talk outside of acting? The guy talks very fast, is sarcastic, and generally appears/sounds uncomfortable.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:36 AM
I’ll probably wait for the laserdisc.
You got some sort of flux capacitator?
August 12th, 2011 at 11:36 AM
I’ll watch it in a year or so when it’s on HBO.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:36 AM
You will have to pay me a dollar to rent from Redbox to watch anything by Eisenberg.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
I love Aziz, the rest, meh. Who the fuck is Michael Pena? Sounds like a baseball player

Finally saw Social Network earlier this week. I liked it.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
I liked Eisenberg in that movie, but I thought JT stole the show. He was excellent in it.

The makers of “Big Momma’s House” and it’s sequels agree with this sentiment.

I liked the guy who played Eduardo Saverain. He was quite good as well. But yes, Timerlake owned as Sean Parker.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
i’ve got that on my DVR, planning to watch it soon.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
Is that bad?
August 12th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
you want funny? watch louis from last night.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
Eastbound and Down, Observe and report, Shooter, Crash
August 12th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
No. I was just making a statement.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
Ah, so the answer is ‘some guy who is in everything you’ve never seen’
August 12th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
I only watched Wilfred last night. Gonna get good and ripped tonight and watch both Louis’. Wilfreds voice for sneakers was both hilarious and disconcerting. Much like the entire show.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:47 AM

I thought JT was the weak-link in that movie. Seemed mis-cast as the “villian.” I thought Eduardo and Eisenberg were great.

I find it hard to believe you have never seen Crash. Everyone has been suckered into seeing that shitty movie once.

I don’t think they were cutting Parker out to be a classic villain, so much as a pied piper of sorts. In that sense I thought he did well.

Is he the pushover-FBI agent-cum-rifle wielding bad-ass?

Agree to disagree. I have a huge crush on his GF at the very beginning. Although, I find it hard to believe an asshole who looked like he did managed to land someone like her to begin with.

Yep. I hated that movie. We’re all a little racist, and we all have different perspectives? No shit? That’s some heavy knowledge you’re going to spend well over two hours dropping on me continuously and not very subtly.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
Although I could say I’ve basically seen Observe & Report, since I did see Paul Blart: Mall Cop, unfortunately..
August 12th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
have no interest in seeing this. looks awful, going for the cheap laughs
August 12th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Not trying to be a smartass….
Am I missing something, or are those just oopsies?

I’ve never given that site a pageview, but from the quoted sentences above, it’s safe to say it needs to be liquidated.

Andrew Garfield. Been watching some other of his works like ‘Never Let Me Go’ and right now in the middle of the ‘Red Riding’ Trilogy.

Agree to disagree.

Its really funny to think back that the only reason the movie about ‘racism and prejudice’ won best picture is because no one wanted to give the award to the gay cowboy movie.

The fact that Ludacris was in a movie that won best picture is pretty sad.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Count me in to the suckered crowd. I have no idea who told me it was “such a good movie” that made me want to see it, but I did. What a hot mess.

I’ve gotten “you look like that guy” from a few ladies. I had know idea who he was until I saw the social network. I don’t see it. I’m much better looking.

I will go on and assert that Crash is the worst choice for Best Picture since Dances with Wolves. It’s an even worse choice than Shakespeare in Love.
August 12th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
I tend to agree but Shakespeare in Love takes the cake because it had no business beating out Saving Private Ryan.
August 12th, 2011 at 12:03 PM

I agree, but I can sort of understand where some viewers made that choice. Saving Private Ryan was one of the most viscerally disturbing war movies in a long time. That probably turned off some voters just as much as the thought of voting for a movie about two gay cowboys a decade later did.
August 12th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
Saving Private Ryan. Such a good movie. Is there a darker, more compelling first 20 minutes to any other movie?
August 12th, 2011 at 12:05 PM

Pixar’s “UP”
Saving Private Ryan and Shakespeare in love boils down to marketing for the win, same way that lady won for the fighter this year. she out marketed every other nominee.

Not enough time for Yardwork today. I think we have to discuss soccer some more and someone may have had a slam dunk at a YMCA last night.
August 12th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
I’ve never seen Crash either, and don’t plan to.
August 12th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
it’s one of those movies where it’s really not all that good, but editing and score make it better than it actually is.
August 12th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
She was. I would have liked to see Steinfeld win it though.

Agreed. Jeff Bridges was also outstanding in that movie.
August 12th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
yeah, the acting carried that movie through the subpar directing effort.

Nick Swardson is much funnier in real life than he is in the movies.

Subpar directing? You think so?
August 12th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
i wasn’t crazy about the film. i thought it was good, not the best western i’d ever seen and not the worst.
just had different expectations from the coens on it based on how well they captured the western genre in no country for old men.
August 12th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Fair enough Wilhelm. I remember someone saying of Stanely Kubrick that none of his movies can be said to be like any of his others, yet they are all distinctly his; you can tell a Kubrick movie when you are watching it.
I think they Coens are getting to that point as well: while they are expanding outward the genres in which they work, their movies have a distinctive feeling to them no matter the subject matter. I don’t think they are trying to make one movie like any of their previous movies, but their style perpetuates downward, especially with how they direct characters.
August 12th, 2011 at 12:45 PM
Was it really that good a movie though? I’ve never seen it, but everyone I know who has calls it overrated. Even the gheys.

Nowhere near as overrated as Crash.
