Tiger Woods at the PGA Championship: Worst Round Ever at the Event (+7, 77)
Tiger Woods just completed his worst round at the history of the PGA Championship – an event he’s won four times in his career – shooting a 7-over 77, which has him tied for 98th place (at the time of this posting). Woods is a staggering 14 shots behind the leader, Steve Stricker (-7 through 16 holes).
We’ll update this post when Stricker’s round is complete. [UPDATE: Stricker finished at -7, so Woods ended the day 14 shots back.]
Woods actually started the day fine, but he was an abysmal +10 over the final 13 holes. Tiger nearly had as many double bogeys (3) as he did birdies (4). As one guy said on twitter, Tiger was in 13 bunkers Thursday, and not even David Hasselhoff spends that much time on the beach. Ernie Johnson, who is leading coverage on TNT, said the network asked Tiger Woods for an interview, but he declined.
It’s too early to say whether or not Woods will make the cut – we get an idea about that until around 5 pm. Let’s assume the worst – Tiger misses the cut. This is how he will have done in the last 14 majors (3.5 years): 4 DNPs, 2 cuts missed, six top-10 finishes, zero victories. Woods turns 36 on December 30th.
One would assume CBS executives are on their knees praying for Woods to make the cut. With all due respect, it seems unlikely that viewers will turn out in droves to see Stricker, Jerry Kelly, Alexander Noren John Senden and Bill Haas – the five guys atop the leaderboard – slug it out this weekend.

Why does he bother hitting it in the water? Why not just hit the ball closer to the hole?

When I read the headline, I thought it was the singer Usher who was +7.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:16 PM
No one moves the needle like Tiger, but McElroy would be solid for CBS, and I would suspect Rory will be there come Sunday.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:16 PM
Hilarious.

August 11th, 2011 at 2:17 PM
Theres a cut on Thursdays? I did not know that.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:17 PM
Imagine that!
Who else is excited to hear Jim Nantz overenunciate Miguel Angel Jimenez (him-EN-ethhhhhh) this weekend?
August 11th, 2011 at 2:17 PM
yes, I suspect CBS would be happy if McElroy were in the mix, Husker.

August 11th, 2011 at 2:20 PM
I know I’ll be watching. Besides, the afternoon guys have to still go through so I highly doubt these will be the guys competing on the weekend.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:20 PM
It was so bad, too. Every freaking hole was a strain after 5. Again..all Tiger had to do was go +2 and he’d be fine. Now he’s gotta go low just to make sure he makes the cut.

August 11th, 2011 at 2:21 PM
And to think that is still better than 99% of the people on tour just puts in perspective how amazing Tiger has been at playing golf.

There was a bigger collapse from a guy who was actually going to contend – Bubba Watson was -4 through six, went +8 the rest of the way.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:21 PM
that course looks really nice. except that 253 yd par 3. piss off.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:22 PM
that’s pretty damn good.

Tiger Woods is the fight of his life with John Daly for 97th place.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:24 PM
I would have to lay up if I played that hole and accept that a 4 is the best thing I could do. That’s brutal.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:24 PM
Dammit, now I have to root for Tiger tomorrow
August 11th, 2011 at 2:24 PM
Tiger Woods is the fight of his life with John Daly for 97th place.
The difference is that Daly will brag about the hookers he fucked last night.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:24 PM
And the multiple 500+ yard Par 4′s. If I had to play No. 18 I’d be going the David Toms route every f’ing time.

August 11th, 2011 at 2:25 PM
I would probably lose at least a box of balls on this hole. 253 yards with water in front? Fuck that.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:26 PM
It’s nice that at least one major tried to make some golfers shit their pants. Usually the U.S. Open does that, but this year it went all faggy on us.

August 11th, 2011 at 2:27 PM
who cares about yardages?
and they need 500 yard par 4′s on courses like this otherwise the pros will just eat the course for lunch. it’s sad, but technology is really fucking up golf for the rest of us. all that technology is for hackers, not for pros to hit 360 yard drives and have a 490 par 4 be driver, PW, putt.
regulate the ball and driver for the pros. it needs to be done.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
I had to leave that other thread. The italics were freaking me out.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
Agree on this.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
So you’re saying that they should go back to actual wood drivers?
August 11th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
Why did that other post turn into the italics zone? Why does it bother me so much to read all the comments in italics? Was this round worse than Ohio State fans?
August 11th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
not that…just cap driver head size at 300cc and make them use a wound ball instead of a synthetic core ball. bifurcation won’t kill golf.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
for some ordinary joe, sure. for Tiger, the “best” ever? a guy with 14 majors?

McElroy just hit a root and let go of his club. Now shaking his wrist. Not sure if anything is serious or not though.

August 11th, 2011 at 2:32 PM
He seems awfully concerned about it. Keeps looking down and trying to swing a club. This could be a huge turn of events.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
Roeth: That sucks about Batch. I hear he was doing well in camp and could have pushed Moore for the 3rd down job. Also, I like Redman as a backup. He does really well with 3-7 carries a game. I am thinking the Cotchery signing means Sweed is going to get cut and maybe Sanders in hurt more than originally thought.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
Know what’s stupid? Wegmans is headquartered in Rochester, is in PA, NH, and VA but there are no Wegmans east of Syracuse, NY.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
i think cotchery has a huge year. is the steel playing nyj this year?
August 11th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
I would probably lose at least a box of balls on this hole. 253 yards with water in front? Fuck that.
the only club i can hit 250 thats not a driver is the 3 wood, and i suck balls 7/10 times with it. so lay up. on a par 3.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
How about I agree on Casey Anthony’s face and call you to talk about it?
August 11th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
Everyone should have to putt with Robert Garrigus’ hilarious toddler putter.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
you know what? they should outlaw drivers altogether for the pros…phil hit a 310 yard 3w last week. THREE HUNDRED PLUS YARD THREE WOOD.
why the fuck would you use a driver EVER if you had 300+ 3w?

not so fast… with the heat/drought, i’d expect the afternoon rounds to be much more difficult than the morning. i doubt anyone gets close to -7 this afternoon and stricker will come back some tomorrow.
that said, tiger would have to play extremely well tomorrow in conditions that will likely be more difficult.

i would too and then id remember all the 150 yard par 3′s where i chunked my tee shot and boke a smowl.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
I can drive anywhere from 200-290, and hit my 3 roughly 160-220, so I would probably need to drive that hole. Of course my short game is a pile of dung right now, so there’s that.

August 11th, 2011 at 2:37 PM
he got some ice and is going to see what it feels like. The absolute best thing he’s going to do is bogey this hole. A double seems more likely.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
why the fuck would you use a driver EVER if you had 300+ 3w?
um, so i could have a 8-9 iron into that 500 yard par 4 instead of a 5-6 iron?
August 11th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
I’d be cussing the entire walk to the ball if I had to lay up on a par three.
yep. i would need to go throw a quick beat in the woods just to make sure i still had a penoos.

if you’re bitching about hitting a 5-6 iron, hwo did you make it to the PGA tour?
nothing for them, but for us? super long par 4′s, us open lite conditioning and egotistical players who play tees they can’t handle make golf way more expensive in terms of money and time.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:40 PM
If you’re talking the one in Seattle, 86 at Chambers Bay is nothing to “yip” about. That’s a tough course. one of my favorites too though.

I saw one on ESPN and really enjoyed it.
Rory needs to get up and down from a bunker for bogey. He might just save a helluva bogey.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:40 PM
Rory’s shaking his wrist after each shot…not looking good.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:41 PM
That bunker shot was not good for his wrist. He was violently shaking it after hitting from the sand.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:41 PM
And Spence as much as I like your “no driver” idea, the only drawback is some of these guys (like Tiger) are so inconsistent with it it makes things interesting. I doubt many pros have to hit driver most of the time – Tiger could just go back to hitting that stinger he always hit and he’d probably be more accurate.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:41 PM
very nice…how was it? ive heard nothing but rave reviews.
Having only been there on the Pacific Coast I can’t say for Pebble, or Bandon, but I’ll assume it’s gotta be 1. Pebble, 2. Chambers for scenery. Course its not close. Its unreal some of the chip shots we had to hit and how hard the fescue greens are to read.
You’ll appreciate this, we got a forecaddie for my buddy and I and he was high as shit when we started, hit a 220 (/humblebrag) 4 iron to 1 green, landed on the green and finished 45yds down a hill from the hole. His only comment was “Welcome to hell buddy.” Dude was seeing things in the greens we couldn’t comprehend but every read was money (not that I could putt straight).

August 11th, 2011 at 2:43 PM
There are some tough greens there, especially with the fescue. I’ve been where you’re talking about Sterlin on the first hole. It has that huge dropoff on one side that if you miss there, the ball will just keep rolling and end up in the 18th fairway (shared fairway).
August 11th, 2011 at 2:44 PM
Go fuck yourself. I’d kill to “yip” it around to an 86.
I putted into a bunker. Kinda makes the game not fun when you mentally can’t function on part of it.
If you’re talking the one in Seattle, 86 at Chambers Bay is nothing to “yip” about. That’s a tough course. one of my favorites too though.
Agreed, anyone with a sober short game would have shot about 78 with how I hit it, unreal tough. Went to Vancouver over the weekend too, played the chip n’ putt hungover at Stanley Park. Pretty cool area.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:44 PM

August 11th, 2011 at 2:45 PM
I’m one of those idiots who plays the back tees on every course regardless. It does lead to disasters though, like last Friday where on a 7100 yard course I drove it in 12 of 14 fairways but only hit 2 GIR’s because my mid- to long-irons were all over the place.

Rory better stay out of the sand today. His wrist won’t be able to handle many beach shots.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:46 PM
that didn’t look good for Rory. no way he finished today IMO.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:46 PM

Yep, since we were carrying my legs were shot coming up 18, my buddy who took the more scenic route on some holes could barely stand. Our forecaddie was awesome though, cracking jokes and having us play crazy slopes on chip shots. Took us up to the top on 14 (long downhill par 4) to hit, unreal how great the view is. Of course I hit it right into the pot bunker in the middle of the fairway.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:47 PM
/high five!
i like when i hit my 3w in the fairway the same distance as my sliced driver in the rough. i always think “why do i ever hit driver?”
August 11th, 2011 at 2:47 PM
There’s a few of those fun chip and putts around here, but just being in Stanley Park makes that one pretty cool.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:47 PM
Totally agree. He needs to be smart here and not do anything stupid to his wrist that will linger.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:47 PM
No, however, I can confirm the majority of women in these parts are so fine.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:47 PM

Parrish or ATL_Badger – Have you ever been to White Water at Six Flags? I’m thinking about going on Saturday.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:49 PM
There are just some incredible views, like on the 9th where you are basically staring down over the hole you’re so much higher than the green. Tough to play though because then the wind gets hold of it. You’re right, too – it’s a tough walk but well worth it. The US Open is going to be something else there.

A couple of weeks ago, some dicknose in the group ahead of drove his tee shot into the sign for the first hole because he was teeing off from the blacks.
My buddy pointed to the ladies tee and suggested “You should try those out, it may be more to your liking”.

i like when i hit my 3w in the fairway the same distance as my sliced driver in the rough. i always think “why do i ever hit driver?”
Huh, I can’t for the life of me gain confidence with the 3w or any hybrid. Can crush a 3i but my swing can’t hack a fairway wood, instant top.
I truly think the key to hitting a driver well is going all out all the time. It essentially made me learn to draw it and now I have more confidence with it than the 3w.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
very nice.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
A 10-point buck
August 11th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
Sounds about right, except for me it’s usually a hook. I always say I’m going to regrip my 3W and stick with it, but then pride kicks in….
August 11th, 2011 at 2:51 PM
6 flags is amazing high…just saying. I haven’t been in a while, but if you like roller coasters you’ll like it. I refuse to go to White Water.I’m sure it’s a blast, but all I can think about is how disgusting the water has to be. Kids running around pissing all in it and the occasional leaky fart means I’m not partaking.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:51 PM
headline is a bit misleading. It is his worst round ever, not the worst round ever, correct?
August 11th, 2011 at 2:51 PM
Any suggestions for golf outside Detroit, preferably West or South of the city?
August 11th, 2011 at 2:51 PM
There are just some incredible views, like on the 9th where you are basically staring down over the hole you’re so much higher than the green.
Buddy hit the stick on nine (we were playing the blues, 205yd) I hooked a 6 over the hills on the left, had to flop a chip to the top of the hill per caddy instructions, it rolled the next 30yds to within 10ft. Unreal how that course allows for those shots.
/the putt never had a chance (he made par)
August 11th, 2011 at 2:52 PM
I’ll admit, I play on the white tees.
/still not good enough for the blues (only played one course with blacks)
August 11th, 2011 at 2:52 PM
Damnit, this is what somebody else warned me. I love coasters, but we’re talking strictly water park. Son of a bitch.

We paid $135 for twilight (3pm) and finished in 5+ hrs (old funny couple with us were a bit slow) but still easily got the round in. Forecaddy has a quoted price for a group but we just gave him $100 I think since he was a cool dude.

Sign me up. It’s pretty reasonable because it’s publicly owned too. and there’s some other good ones in the area.
I’ve played it a few times and once plugged it in the front bunker (couldn’t figure out what club to hit in the wind). Not a fun up and down.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:55 PM
Parrish or ATL_Badger – Have you ever been to White Water at Six Flags? I’m thinking about going on Saturday
Nope. If I need some water/females in swimsuits action, I head over to my friends apartment complex. I don’t have to worry about the kinds of fecal matter that reside in the water I’m immersing myself in, and the females in swimsuits tend to be over the age of 18. I’ve heard good things about the water park though. Water parks are just not really my cup of tea.

August 11th, 2011 at 2:55 PM
All of this. I’d shoot in the low 90′s if it wasn’t for my wedge play. It’s so fucking bad. It’s what I get for never taking lessons and trying to figure it out on my own.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:55 PM
shit, i bet the caddy was worth more than that just telling you where to shoot. if you didn’t have him around, i can’t imagine how tricky that place would be.
August 11th, 2011 at 2:56 PM
plus, i hate hitting wedges…gimme a mid iron from the fairway any day. the wedge mental block is killing me.
My problem with wedges is for me it’s either put it to gimmie distance or miss the green. Full wedges Im fine with, but 45-80yds is tough for me on courses with really tight fairways.

August 11th, 2011 at 2:56 PM

When we walked onto the 11th tee we both said, “wherever you tell us to hit we will.” It was 360deg. of perfect views of everything, but also nothing at the same time.
I second what bstr said, consider it better than pebble for the price. Your whole CB trip is the Pebble greens fee.

Trapping it low? I lay my gap/sand off a lot and they drift 20ft right a lot. I was told you should naturally draw a full wedge but I only can do it with a PW.
August 11th, 2011 at 3:01 PM
We’re playing Torrey Pines in March for my buddy’s wedding in SD. It’s gonna be fun playing with guys that play maybe once every two years. He says it’s relatively cheap to play Torrey Pines. The toughest part is getting a tee- time over the weekend.
August 11th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
And I shouldn’t say cheap, but not out of control expensive.
August 11th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
Full wedges Im fine with, but 45-80yds is tough for me on courses with really tight fairways.
i’d say that tweener wedge shot is the toughest normal shot in golf. you don’t see many pros impress on those shots. they often leave it 10+ feet away, where i’m sure they could put a full 8/9/PW closer 80% of the time.
August 11th, 2011 at 3:03 PM
That one’s easy for me to hit. Prolly even bring the wife & have another couple come along. Bandon, not so much.
August 11th, 2011 at 3:04 PM
Lots of that around that course. The other one I remember is 7th (I think) that’s so uphill you have no idea what you’re hitting at, and it turns out there’s a green with something of a false front. Miss it short from 150 or so and it’ll roll back so you’re probably playing your next at what, 125?
August 11th, 2011 at 3:04 PM
honestly not sure what im doing cuz i keep the same routine and all that, but it usually happens once per round and then is back to normal. i think im just too stupid to play good golf.
lol…and yea, torrey’s an awesome deal. if you’re a SD resident, it’s fucking outrageously cheap.

Seemed absurdly expensive from the site. Greens fees not included in the cost of the room. Pinehurst being driveable for me is the next stop. Was there in December but only played Pine Needles/Mid Pines. Can’t wait to play the restoration.

spencer – i hit balls for two hours last weekend before playing my round. i went 39 on the front, started the back birdie, birde, and then limped the fuck in – including a triple on 17.
i think i took to many pre-round swings and then i decided to walk the 7000 yard course. i hit a fatigue wall like no other on the back 9.
August 11th, 2011 at 3:16 PM
have you seen the restoration of pinehurst 2? HOLY SHIT…it’s amazing.
Oh yea, they were in process when we were there in December last year. Can’t wait, probably going again this Dec.
Pine Needles was really hard, and that’s with the grass grown a bit around the greens to save you. Awesome course.
August 11th, 2011 at 3:16 PM

Giving me shit about a 86? Just kidding, but I don’t see how anyone can hit more than 45 balls before a round. Hell, I can barely hit a full bucket when practicing. Thankfully podcasts were invented for putting practice.

I’ll caddy for one of yas if you need it. My rate is a case of Yuengling and a pastrami sandwich. Salami is an acceptable substitute, but then I’ll only read your putts on the front nine. You’re on your own on the back half.

August 11th, 2011 at 3:32 PM
but I don’t see how anyone can hit more than 45 balls before a round.
i’m the same way, but there were elements of my game that were in dire need of some work and i don’t have a natural range near my house. i had to take advantage of the range at the course i drove 2 hours to play.

I went from old ass Tommy Armour EVOs that I bought like 8 years ago and went out and got Callaway X24s. Amazing difference between the 2. Already had a Cleveland 50 and 58 degree that round out my irons.
August 11th, 2011 at 3:46 PM
congrats…the x20/22/24 is a solid series. makes golf fun they’re so easy to hit but they don’t look like shovels.
August 11th, 2011 at 3:50 PM
It amazes me how different they are from what I was used to. No effort to hit the ball anymore. Luckily I get to play twice a week most weeks. If I can get my driver back to normal I’m hoping I can get my handicap under 15.
August 11th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
I have a set of X20′s, love them, although I nicked up my 6 iron playing last week when I was in the woods and hit a small rock.
August 11th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
nice irons, dude.
50 and 58 degree
that’s a yardage gap there. i’d switch it up.
i just tossed out my 3 wood and added a 50 to my bag. now i’ve got yardage covered that was giving me trouble before.
/carries 50/54/58.
August 11th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
you’ll get under 15. just gotta think that extra second and not make stupid mistakes that you can avoid. that’ll shave strokes off just as much as a well behaved driver.

August 11th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
you’re gonna have some scars on your clubs if you play a lot…you should see some of the tour guys’ clubs. beat to hell and back.
August 11th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
That’s 90% of it. I’ve been simplifying my game a lot this year. Don’t try to go through/Over the trees, chip out and hit a shot I know I can hit.
That and practicing with my wedges regularly so i can get to the green have been huge.
August 11th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
Iron set included a 55 degree SW.
no shit? i can’t recall the last time i saw a set of irons with a SW.
August 11th, 2011 at 4:00 PM
I just added a 3 wood this year. Have always been consistent with my 4 iron at 200-210 yds so I never thought I had use for one.
August 11th, 2011 at 4:01 PM
me neither…but if you only hit full shots with it, it’s probably pretty useful.
oh yea.
August 11th, 2011 at 4:02 PM
I was surprised too. Everything online and at the store said 4-AW. When they opened the box at golf galaxy it had a SW which actually worked out to my advantage as I already carried a Cleveland 50 that I was not getting rid of under any circumstance.
As an added bonus they had forgotten to take the sale price down that had expired the week before so I saved $150 on the set.
August 11th, 2011 at 4:03 PM
I found a knick out of my 60* wedge a couple weeks ago and almost shed a tear. then I realized how much I used it and how it didn’t affect my swing at all.
August 11th, 2011 at 4:05 PM
!!!
August 11th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
so I never thought I had use for one.
spencer can attest to this: i’ve been anti-hybrid forever now. i refused to play one. i’m pretty long with my irons, especially the 3-5. this year i added a hybrid 2 to my bag b/c of inconsistency off the tee and the fucking thing has grown on me. i’ll never hit the 3 wood again because i hit the hybrid 2 probably 10 yards less and more consistent. plus, rarely do i find myself 260+ going for the green in two. the 50 degree wedge that replaced the 3 wood will get hit 4-5 times a round.
August 11th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
yea, the first one’s always a heartbreaker…and then you don’t care about chucking it around in anger after that.
August 11th, 2011 at 4:07 PM

spencer – as that black-oxcide finish wears on those wedges, they get sexier. just food for thought, bro.
August 11th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
Had a hybrid 4 for a long time, could never get used to it. Love the 3 wood, and most of the time I hit it it goes where it’s supposed to. When the driver is on I never have need for the 3W, and when the driver is off I use the 3W.

August 11th, 2011 at 4:16 PM
same thing here…only when the driver’s off, i use it all day and keep it in the bag when it’s working.
i have a 16 and 21 degree hybrid…i couldn’t imagine a 24+ degree…just seems like too much loft.
August 11th, 2011 at 4:20 PM
Usually the way it goes. Luckily I can usually tell pretty early if the driver is on or off.

Just got a new 56 vokey a month ago. Still learning how to hit it since the balls jumps more off it. Used the same 56 since HS (9yrs.) Bought a gently used 60 and went with essentially no bounce. Sand play has increased greatly.
August 11th, 2011 at 4:41 PM

August 11th, 2011 at 4:44 PM
Absolutely, wet traps give me trouble, but flopping out seems like the path of least resistance for me. Amazing what having a wedge without a rusted out face can do for someone trying to spin the golf ball.
August 11th, 2011 at 4:45 PM
oh, the low bounce makes flops a fucking breeze. gotta love that.
