Klinsmann Showed Encouraging Signs in 1-1 Draw With Mexico
This was the first match, after a few days with a new coach who is implementing new players, a new formation and a new philosophy. It was against a superior opponent. Juergen Klinsmann wanted to “get to know” everyone and considered the Mexico result “no big deal.” Showing a few flashes in a loss would have been acceptable. The U.S. drew 1-1 and would have had the chance to go ahead had a late penalty call no been botched. That performance should be encouraging.
We tend, like our English cousins, to view soccer solely through what happens with the ball. The first half was awful, as the U.S. created little. The second half was awesome, as the U.S. created much. It injects drama and fashions a logical narrative and we all can agree to ignore the fact the U.S. only looked dangerous after Rafa Marquez departed. What we saw, however, was not so much a tale of two halves, but a continuous performance and one that should engender some optimism.
This game was more boring than last month’s Gold Cup Final, with far less back and forth. That was by design. The 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, whatever you want to call it, kept the U.S. balanced and stable. The team was organized. Everyone tracked back (Donovan was quite effective at it). The midfield wasn’t outnumbered. Miraculously, the back four appeared less vulnerable, even with some unstable left back play (Honestly, what does Bobby Convey have to do to get a call up?)
The formation provided a stable base to be proactive without getting wrecked. It offered the versatility to be combative or attacking, depending on the personnel. They were blunted on the final third starting a lone striker, because that lone striker was Edson Buddle.
Brek Shea was great. He was direct, he took players on and he gave the U.S. an attacking impetus. He showed more poise than in his first appearance. His cross on Rogers’ goal was excellent. He looked like the ideal “impact” guy for the U.S. to bring on in the second half. Be impressed, but with this caveat. It was a friendly. There’s no tackling. Who does that help more than a player who likes to charge at defenders?
Kyle Beckerman also impressed me. He could have been a little better with the ball, but he did his job. He carried water competently. He positioned himself well, he covered a ton of ground and he protected his defenders in a profoundly flash-free manner. He made few plays, but he kept the other team from making them. He might struggle against more robust teams who can knock him off the ball, but his effort should earn him more opportunities.
Klinsmann’s most controversial move was playing Bradley in an advanced position. I agreed with it. Bradley’s strengths are his aggressiveness, his marauding runs and his knack for scoring goals. His weaknesses are playing simple passes and covering his position soberly. Playing him with a firm foundation behind him, maximizes his strengths and minimizes his weaknesses. His frenetic play up front is valuable. It disrupts the other team. His frenetic play as a holding midfielder, especially in a 4-4-2, disrupts his own team. Ball movement breaks down. Too many jailbreaks for the other team, beginning in midfield. If he’s going to play, he must be in a more advanced position. Emphasis on the “if he’s going to play.”
The worry with Klinsmann was his tactics. Without a staff in place, he fielded a logical formation given the raw material and made adept substitutions. He was good technically, while permeating the infectious enthusiasm we expected. The latter can be as influential as the former at international level. The performance wasn’t perfect. The revolution will take time, but last night’s positives showed where the U.S. is heading and that should breed some cautious optimism. Americans may finally get a team that does not need the prospect of imminent peril to be exciting.

come the fuck on… three soccer posts in a row for a game everyone agrees is pretty insignificant and NOT ONE golf post for the last major of the year?
get fucked.

August 11th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Soccer was upended by the Little League World Series last night on ESPN(2).
That is all.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Get over it. It’s Klinsmann’s debut as coach and deserves coverage and discussion.
He looks very happy in that picture.
What a terribly officiated match. That official should be tarred and feathered.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
I swear this is said after every soccer match
August 11th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Yet ESPN had an on-field studio similar to Sunday Night Football and covered it all day.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
I thought Donovan played like a bag of dicks for the first 60 minutes. He turned it on in the final 30 though. Shea was great, but I thought Beckerman just “meh.”
August 11th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
agree on Shea.
kind of agree on Beckerman.
what i like most is that everyone is essentially starting fresh. Klinsmann hasn’t said it, but i assume nobody is locked in anywhere.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
The screencap up there says it all. By rule, not subjective official analysis, that is a red card. The guy was given a yellow card.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
Embarrassing by the self-described World Wide Leader. For a sport that ESPN is attempting to act like it cares about, overriding the start of the game with a Little League Regional Semi-Final (not a LLWS game), is just absurd.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
Soccer was upended by the Little League World Series last night on ESPN(2).
That is all.
and it was only the regionals, not even the real deal.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
THis is the best thing about a new coach. They can see for themselves who plays and who doesn’t. I will say that Donovan needs to be given as much space as possible. He doesn’t track back for shit, but he can still use his pace and beat guys.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
I thought his game plan to have the team kick the ball around the field was brilliant. Obvious upgrade if you ask me.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
Is it just me (and there is no way it can be) or do soccer players turn into absolute dip shits when it comes time for an actual shot. Besides the flopping, it’s my least favorite thing about the sport and takes away, for me, my impressions of their level of skill. Dudes blasting balls 30 rows up is the equivalent for me of airballs, looking at strike 3, turnovers, etc.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
No, just any important USA game, and every USA-Mexico game is important.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:50 AM

It’s just you.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
Dawg – how good was that Donovan run in the 2nd half? He went from around midfield to the box, just burning two dudes. that was impressive
August 11th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
I can’t believe this game was talked about on SportsNation (SPORTS-FREAKING-NATION!) yesterday. You guys, this was a huge deal.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
Ill – I’ll threadjack and talk golf. Tiger’s caddie looks like the biggest nerd of all-time.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
I started watching this game on ESPN and wondered why I was actually enjoying soccer. Then I realized I was actually watching a Little League Baseball game.
Nice try, ESPN. But you’re not fooling me.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
Embarrassing by the self-described World Wide Leader.
not really.
America’s pastime > any US soccer other than the WC
August 11th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
id rather threadjack by copy and pasting this entire post with “some guy named” added in front of every proper noun and then call bill barnwell a troll.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
ESPN is in Philadelphia to cover the Iggles. They took in a soccer game in the mean time.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
ritty, the reason they blast the ball over is because if they are going to have any prayer of scoring from 18 to 25 yards out, they have to hit a pretty hard shot to beat a goalkeeper of Tim Howard’s quality from that kind of distance.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
had no clue it was a major.
not a big sports fan, huh?
August 11th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Just like the NBA. And fan interest is through the roof, too!
August 11th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
TBL – here’s a good link to start with.
http://www.ajc.com/sports/golf/aacs-closing-holes-may-1095359.html
I’m interested to see how the course holds up this go round. In 2001 it played really easy and they’ve made a ton of changes since.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
He looked like he did 2-3 years ago on that run. He looks very good when he has some space and can give defenders a go. The final 30 minutes looked great, but the first 60 can’t be ignored, either.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
And, Beckerman was marginal in my book as well. Too many giveaways. He does show himself nicely and feels confident on the ball. But, his carelessness at times will get them killed in meaningful tourneys.
Shea, despite the douchey name and worse hair, was fantastic. I can picture a squad with he and Landon on each flank, with Dempsey in the middle of it all…
I liked 3 of the back 4 (Edgar is yet another fail at LB). Stevie C is absolutely the most underrated guy to play on a US team, ever. He is just a great RB. Plays fantastic D, gets forward, plays good balls into the box. And, he gets very little, if any pub, ever because he’s played overseas his entire career.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
but if you see an interesting hook/link, stop ‘getting fucked’ and get on email and send it over, chief.
if I don’t find it in my inbox or on my twitter feed, it isn’t actually happening.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
I want to see Ricardo Clark get some run at CB. I think that could actually work.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
I understand it’s difficult to score. But why not put one eye level that the goalie has to make a play on? a) they aren’t perfect b) they aren’t going to catch everything and anything that bounces off the keeper has a better chance of a rebound score than something that Jose Olivas catches in Section 17, row 42.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Bob Ley, Alexi Lalas and two other former US Soccer players whose names escape me are not going to be breaking down the Eagles game. They sent them there for this game.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:56 AM

August 11th, 2011 at 10:56 AM

August 11th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
I cringe at a lot of TBL’s comments. Then I think, if I ran a sports blog, it would probably be NFL/MLB/NHL heavy, because thats what I know, and NBA & soccer fans would probably get really pissed off at me. So I guess, to each his own.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
NEVER, EVER want to see him in a US uniform again.
Now, Edu at CB? I’m all for some of that…
August 11th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
Begun, the TBL Soccer Wars have.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
This is hilarious. All of this is absolutely hilarious.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
A murder’s row like that doesn’t have time for your pathetic “football” league.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
That said, I’d still probably throw up a post for every golf major, and know when they were.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
i’ll look into it. but if you see an interesting hook/link, stop ‘getting fucked’ and get on email and send it over, chief.
the ‘get fucked’ was over the top, my fault.
i’m too busy working to search for links anymore, hence the demise of Tuna Golf. where’s your girl Wei Under Par? i’m sure she’s got something. i’m just looking for a platform to chat about the leaderboard..
August 11th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
No one talking about Orozco? Orozco looked competent at the back. USA needs some speed back there, and he may be the answer if he can improve.
When did he pick up his new last name? Fiscal?
August 11th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Some guy named Tiger Woods can’t seem to hit a fairway to save his life.
August 11th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Mind what you have learned! Save you it can! Especially the channel guide on your cable box!
August 11th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
Oranje, I was wondering about Orozco having another last name as well. It’s probably his mother’s last name and he has added it on for good measure. Spanish names work like that: First, Middle, Father Last, (Mother Last).
August 11th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
I’m not sure what this is supposed to mean.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
that 18th green approach would be intimidating as fuck.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
props to Geoff and Kaiser for their soccer banter last night. all the other schmucks who chime in with lame crap can suck me sideways.
back to soccer … i can see Bradley falling out of the rotation and being an energy guy off the bench
August 11th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
It’ll take two paragraphs and two links to serve as conversation starters. Spencer, you can send your draft to me to edit.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
i’m guessing the number of soccer posts this early means an NFL post or two later today?
August 11th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
Your hands, you will not need them
August 11th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
I’m marching straight down to FSV H.R. to talk to Carol.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
Wally – what can be done at left back? is moving Lichaj there too risky, because he’s good on the right?
August 11th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
Sorry man, I didn’t get cut from my baseball, football, or basketball teams in high school. I don’t know anything about soccer.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
Tiger made a joke about his caddie’s legs that i thought was funny (hilarious considering tiger’s sense of humor). he is one nerdy looking dude.
i’m going to say i could match or beat Ishikawa’s front 9
August 11th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
i knew a tournament started, had no clue it was a major. i’ll look into it. but if you see an interesting hook/link, stop ‘getting fucked’ and get on email and send it over, chief.
Ignorance is bliss, I suppose.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
Given the abundance of midfielders we have, this is possible. At the same time, it seems like the whole group is hardly ever 100% healthy so having more depth is a good thing.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:03 AM

I like how certain posts are not only expected, but demanded, from commenters as if their daily life depends on what is posted at TheBigLead.com.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
See, that’s a dumb fucking comment. Most of the people I know who played soccer never tried out for the other teams because soccer was their sport.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
It’s funny because it would be like some dumb blonde asking why a basketball player didn’t get the ball to go in the hoop more. “Why doesn’t he try to get it to land in the hoop?” It’s that stupid of a statement.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
Clay – I appreciate your burnt-faced avatar.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
that 18th green approach would be intimidating as fuck.
sunday afternoon will be awesome with those finishing holes.
i have to fly to NO for at 745 sunday night. i hope i can watch the finish in the airport.

Meh.. I don’t think it’s that.. TBL can post whatever he wants… it’s his condescending/dismissive attitude towards any criticism and or suggestions that’s aggravating to some.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
Clay – I appreciate your burnt-faced avatar.
that guy also played Yarp in Hot Fuzz, which is a real role reversal.
I just finished book 2

Do you have a link or interesting hook for us?
August 11th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
I call shenanigans. There’s no way your HR person isn’t named Barb.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
All right, I’ll change it – when I was 7, my Dad thought soccer was for pussies.
Actually, I’m just kidding around and my comment about getting cut was a responsive putdown on Husker’s behalf. Nobody on the soccer team at my high school even played Little League growing up.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
esp when they put the pin right in front.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
But who cares? Read stories/posts at other sites if you’re pining for football, hockey or whatever instead of soccer.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
The Fiscal is to honor his mother is what I heard. Castillo needs to play LM if he is actually going to play in the future, it is where he plays for his club team.
Anyone else disappointed with Jones for the National team? He is hit or miss most of the time.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
what was the joke?
don’t remember exactly. something along the lines of, reporter:”is he going to be your permanent caddie, tiger?” tiger: “have you seen his legs? i can’t be assocaiated with those.”
August 11th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
Amazing when the USMNT can make sucessful first and second touches. Their ground game is atrocious and control will always be the limiting factor. Simply getting Agudelo and Shea in there for some creativity and skill was refreshing, and seemed to awaken Donovan. Time to infuse some real skill play and formate concerted attacks.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
lol
August 11th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Aguedelo is so damn fast. He’s a great weapon to have in the 60-65th minute or so.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Most of the people I know who played soccer never tried out for the other teams because soccer was their sport.
I’m opposite. Most of the kids I know played soccer first (pee wee soccer) because their parents thought the other little leagues were either dangerous or expensive.
But I can’t imagine not understanding that it’s harder to hit a moving ball clearly and squarely while people are trying to stop you.
That’s tantamount to wondering why MMA guys don’t just get the other guy in a figure 4, like in “real” wrestling
August 11th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
hell yeah, with some $8 airport beers

I agree.. but like I said, when you’re an ass to the people that frequent your blog and are giving suggestions to help make it better… can’t be good for business. That being said, I’ve never bitched about soccer posts, etc. I usually just stay out of ‘em.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
No it isn’t, dick. I was under the impression that soccer players have enough skill to put a shot on goal. They can drop passes on a dime. Why not put more shots on a dime? Take something off. Make the keeper make a play?
And your analogy doesn’t work because it’d be like basketball players missing the rim by 5 feet being a norm. While I’m asking, why don’t soccer players at least “hit the rim” every now and then.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
Most of the people I know who played soccer never tried out for the other teams because soccer was their sport
The only guys I went to HS with that got more pussy than the football players were the soccer guys.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
Aguedelo is good but needs to make better/faster decisions with the ball sometimes. I hope he gets some playing time with his club now that Rodgers is hurt.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
TBL: Some talk about Shea being a left back.
Can we resurrect the ghosts of David Regis and Eddie Lewis?
Agree with Duffy, Convey has to be considered again. Lichaj could be the option as well, as right back might be manned by Timmy Chandler in the near future.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
Yep, but its hard when theyre the only posts for a solid 2 hours
August 11th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
While I’m asking, why don’t soccer players at least “hit the rim” every now and then.
there’s an indoor rec league in dallas. Go join a team, and report back on how many shots you put on goal.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
Y’all get a look at that 260 yd par 3? With water along the right?
I’m hitting 3-wood into that. And duck hooking it away from the water, into the pines, pitching out, two putting and Tiger style fist pumping to make bogey.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
Ha ha, exactly. The one I took issue with was that fake frat house slap video. It was pointless, and… well, fake. But, yeah, I went and read other stories and posts at other sites to get my info. Plus, let’s be honest, the comment sections get pretty fucking stupid a lot and become a wasteland.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
why can’t derek anderson or chad henne hit a WR in the body instead of throwing 100mph bullets 3 feet behind them?
August 11th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
Yep, but its hard when theyre the only posts for a solid 2 hours
This is true… which is why I’m commenting in this soccer thread.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
Because shooting a soccer ball is really fucking hard. The reason goals are few and far between isn’t because of a lack of skill. It’s because it’s really hard to do.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
I dated the top soccer player in my high school, he was one of the best in the state. Funny: He was shorter than me.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
Plus, let’s be honest, the comment sections get pretty fucking stupid a lot and become a wasteland.
but it’s also the reason you’re here, no? For the chatter?
August 11th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
Another terrible comparison. I haven’t been playing soccer for 18 years.
I mean dude last night had one put on a platter and he launched it way the fuck over everything. They look so smooth, impressive, and then completely shit the bed.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
I hope they don’t move Shea to LB, he is one of the better attackers that the team has. Will be interesting to see who gets called up for the next friendlies. The midfield selections are going to be tough for JK
August 11th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Brek Shea shouldn’t play left back. He’s better in a more attack-minded position.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
i embrace criticism/suggestions. take the 45 seconds to send them to me via email. i read them all. we can hop on gchat to talk about it, too. i’ve done that with several people.
i even appreciate spirited golf emails. that carries much more weight than someone firing off angry missives with every comment.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
If a soccer team gets 10 shots on goal, it’s probably been a successful match. Basketball teams shoot at least 70 times a game. There is no similarity here.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
It’s why the rest of us aren’t going elsewhere. I can get some work done, but mostly I just want to talk to you guys. Preferably not about something I know nothing about.
It’s on a tee. Go ahead.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Lotta shots fired in here.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
why can’t derek anderson or chad henne hit a WR in the body instead of throwing 100mph bullets 3 feet behind them?
because football is extra hard, while soccer is super easy. I should know, I used to do kickball.

You read the SI article on your imaginary husband? Looks like he’s firmly in SC’s /Team Boobs category when selecting wives. I hated the fact that he seems to be a funny little fucker though. I wanted him to be an asshole.

i embrace criticism/suggestions.
just not where other people can see it. You like it where it can be ignored.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
I would compare it more to a QB being able to hit his receivers in stride, that is until they get in the red zone
August 11th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
you talking about phil mickelson or sergio garcia?
/same thing man…if sergio can hit a 3w from 270 to 5 or 10 feet, why can’t he putt?
//probably because he plays a lot of soccer…HI-YO!
August 11th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
attack like what, forward? or attacking MF? going to be tough to crack the starting lineup with the full roster
August 11th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
It’s a reason, yeah. I actually do read the posts, too. ha ha
August 11th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
damn, tiger is +2 now. what the hell?
August 11th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
I’m not doubting that. I’m just saying more shots on goal, even ones that the keeper can reach, should be at more of a premium than trying to blast one in the top corner that the keeper has no shot at. In the relatively few matches I’ve watched, it seems like balls the keeper gets a hand on, but doesn’t control, lead to more goals than shots that are a 10 out of 10 on the difficulty scale.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
Nah that was the dude I dated when I was 19 and he was 26
August 11th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
Was this the guy that sweat like Freddy Garcia?
I laughed.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
he started on the back 9 and got into trouble on the finishing holes, which are all just fucking brutal.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
Clay is killing it in this thread. Well done.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
The names of people that went before Sergio in my PGA pick ‘em are hilarious.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
The last four holes raped the shit out of him. Double, bogey, par, double
August 11th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
Another Earth for me tomorrow. Final Destination… that’d be a shit-tastic lollercoaster
August 11th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
HOLY SHIT…tiger played the last 3.5 holes at +5.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
goofy white shoes with black pants… I don’t care if you have a white belt, that’s not a good look Tiger.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
i mean, i know he’s got a bad rep and all, but the dude hasn’t been playing shitty in the slightest. he’s a way better pick than some asshat like camilo villegas or david toms.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
I was going to make a joke, but then I realized last year when I was 27 I boned a 19 year old. So, yeah…
August 11th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
im laying up to the ladies tee
Just decided to nickname Kellen Moore “ladies tee” for the rest of his career.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
You don’t think they’re trying? To beat a goalie you have to place it perfectly or hammer the fuck out of it. You can’t just groove a BP fastball at them.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
Yea I think I am gonna try to check this out. Looks interesting.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
August 11th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
Is this only coming out in certain cities? I saw a trailer a while back that looked good, but I havent seen it advertised and its not listed at my theaters.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
shit, if my 3 wood isn’t straight it’s usually right, so I would be screwed. I would probably lay up on a par 3 and not feel bad about it at all.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
I was going to make a joke, but then I realized last year when I was 27 I boned a 19 year old. So, yeah…
So this is going to turn into one of those threads now? SEE TBL?! Look what your soccer posts have done!
August 11th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
prolly shoulda had a comment in 130…
tiger looks like he’s wearing slippers.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
Shea should stick to the left wing either as a sub or starter.
@tyduffy and TBL- What are your thoughts on JK saying he wants to call in Euro players for the friendly in LA next month?
August 11th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
Another Earth for me tomorrow
Saw a preview before Tree of Life (burnishes art cinema credentials). What I find amusing about it is that it won the Cannes Award for best science fiction movie this year despite the fact that everyone on the committee agreed that the movie ignored essentially everything we know about gravitational fields and orbits.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
It’s limited release. It’s only showing at one place in Atlanta. Here’s the cities and locations.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
yea…forget the par, everyone’s playing the same hole. treat it as a par 4 and if you get a 4, it’s not that bad cuz i bet there are maybe four or five birdies on this thing all week.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
Fuck. Y’all.
I’m not making these analogies to oversimply and disrespect soccer. I’m making them because I don’t know as much about soccer as y’all and I’m trying to learn and appreciate the nuance.
I realize I’m just a fucking Auburn avatar to y’all, but one thing I’m not is stupid.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
haha. this made me laugh.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
It doesn’t work like that, but I see your concern. Apparently, this is from another universe or timeline. Think multiverse. So while it can be seen, it doesn’t have an effect on us. I read an interview about it… hmm…. lemme find it.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:25 AM

You should really lay off the “y’all’s” then.
/pokes hornets nest.

Me too.

Ah I see. The article I read didn’t mention the multiverse part. I’d still see it, errors or not. Half of the enjoyment of science fiction is suspending reality anyway.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
for a bogey (on a good day) golfer like myself, I would be THRILLED with a 4 on that hole.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
You should really lay off the “y’all’s” then.
He lives in Texas, it’s acceptable.

and your strategy to learn more is comment 14? That’s an invitation to be spoken to in a civil manner, if I’ve ever seen one.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
Not sure why Lichaj and/or Chandler shouldn’t be looked at for LB. As mentioned before, Stevie C at RB isn’t broken and likely won’t be through qualifying.
And, no way Shea is a LB. He is an attacking player, one that very few US players can be compared to because of his size and creativity. He’s a bonehead and will do stupid stuff, but at his age that is acceptable as long as its in the last third of the field – and not in front of your own net.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
is that normal? not normal? you’ll have to help me here, as i have no idea to what usually happens … do players hate that? like that?
if they didn’t call back the Euro players, how many fans would show up to see the “B” team and Donovan?
August 11th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
Never.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
Tiger is laughably bad right now. Last 5 holes: +6.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
I really wish I could find it. I read it about two weeks ago. Because this other Earth didn’t just float up from outer space.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
I really wish I could find it. I read it about two weeks ago. Because this other Earth didn’t just float up from outer space.
The article I read made it sound exactly like that was the case. So if you can find that other one, I’d be interested to see it.

good for you. our “yalls” sound a hell of a lot better than “yous guys”. fuck the northeast!
August 11th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
Played Club Soccer from ages 8-13, turned 14 went to high school played football….one soccer player did kick for our football team though. I would guarantee you if you took the best athletes from football, baseball, and basketball teans and gave them 3 weeks to practice we would absolutely destroy the soccer team.
/Cam still took the $$ though
August 11th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
Just thought it would be crazy if he called in Euro players for the game on the 2nd and had them fly back to Europe for the game in Belgium on the 6th. I just thought he would have called in MLS/Mexico players for the first game and used Euro players for the next game
August 11th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
Sorry, maybe I should talk about how Donovan played like a bag of dicks (comment 7), or Little League (comment 3)…etc. Comment 14 is my impression of the game put in a manner commensurate with comments regularly featured on this blog. If I didn’t care, I wouldn’t still be here defending myself or asking further questions.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:33 AM
I honestly thought this kind of stupidity was limited to Palin. Just amazing.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
Hook, Line, Post coming shortly.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
@WW I’m with you on using Lichaj at LB, he didn’t look to bad in the GC when used there. I wonder if JK will try to call up Miguel Ponce from Chivas as he plays LB for them. Granted that would mean he would have to find a new team to play for, but he has looked good in the games I have watched.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:36 AM
If I didn’t care, I wouldn’t still be here defending myself or asking further questions.
you’ll probably have to watch some more games to see how they play out, with the kicking and the goals. Usually, on those moon shots that go into the stands, you’ll get a replay and you’ll see how the guy mis-hit the ball.
But it’s honestly like asking why a baseball player keeps fouling the ball off. Why doesn’t he just hit it over the fence, or “where they ain’t.” Why did he hit that baseball right to the shortstop.
It wasn’t his intention.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:36 AM

This.

I honestly thought this kind of stupidity was limited to Palin. Just amazing.
at my school, all the guys who were the best at soccer as kids gave it up, and went to play other sports.
I was not one of the best at soccer. I only got to play forward when my dad coached the team. Otherwise, I had to stand in the back.
but it’s not like Ty is talking about taking linemen to play soccer.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
ms621- it’s about halfway down and it sounds like they bent some rules of science.

I may be stupid, but not that stupid….also you never saw some of the d-bags that played soccer @ my high school
August 11th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Also, ms621, that’s not the story I read, but I think it’ll suffice.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Listen, maybe your team was the worst of all time. I don’t know. I just know that you could have the best athletes in your school who don’t play soccer, give them 3 weeks, and then watch them get worked (10-0…minimum) by any halfway decent team.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
Lichaj is good on the right??????????? What matches have you watched? He sucks, pure and simple.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:44 AM

Doubtful, I saw Sylvester Stallone turn into a world class goal keeper in less than three weeks and he was in a prison camp. I also think you are over estimating the level of skill a high school soccer team had 15 years ago
August 11th, 2011 at 11:45 AM

Great stuff NDub. Thanks. I like how they emphasize that there is a science fiction nature to it, but that it exists solely for the metaphorical and poetic aspect of things.
August 11th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Not a problem. I love sci-fi when it’s used as a storytelling device to create and develop characters and drama.
