John Thompson over the years, despite his attempt to appear above the fray by providing a “hand up” to young hard scrabble basketballer’s from the wrong side of the railroad tracks, has given these kids “a chance in life to play Division I basketball in the furtherance of their dream to play NBA basketball. But, Thompson also benefits from their decision to attend Georgetown, from their talent’s specifically, in order to position his Georgetown Basketball program in the running for a National Championship each year, and it worked too. But Thompson definitely has his own ax to grind over racial matters and I am not at all saying that he hasn’t got a point , but I am saying that he has not been a bastion of inclusion and racial outreach himself. Thompson should look in the mirror.

I am a very very close friend of Vic, David Ross yeah that’s me. Something that you squares and suburan raised yuppies will never now about or see is the challenges faced with young black inner inner city youths. Thompson unfairly gets a pass for a lot of things that other coaches have been villified for. Page playing at Georgetown should have been scrutinized a bit more by the media.

His graduation rate probably gave him the benefit of the doubt. Now if he had a graduation rate like Gary, he would have been under more scrutiny. Of course, Gary’s friends in the DC media as well as their relative lack of national relevance helped him escape that scrutiny

i agree Page was maddening to watch, but to call him “shitty” is just silly. awesome amount of basketball talent in that kid back in the day.

Meh. I don’t know about “awesome amount of talent.” Basically, he was a kid who could score a ton in college, but I don’t think anything he did was ever going to translate to the NBA. Good player at Georgetown, but certainly not an awesome talent.
