Jereme Richmond Will Be One of Those NBA Draft Cautionary Tales
Jereme Richmond of Waukegan, Illinois, was a standout high school basketball player. As a freshman playing his first varsity game, he scored 34 points and took 21 rebounds, and Illinois offered him a scholarship. He was recruited by Duke, Michigan State, and North Carolina, but opted for his hometown Illini. (I highly suggest the video below; it’ll be Richmond’s career highlight.)
Rivals had Richmond as the 35th best player in the class of 2010. On a senior-laden team that eventually fell apart, Richmond had an up-and-down frehsman season, but occasional flashes of brilliance (18 and 10 in a nationally-televised loss to Ohio State) led some to believe he might be the team’s best player in 2012.
Then he butted heads with coach Bruce Webber late in the season, was suspended for the last two games, and declared for the NBA draft. Nobody selected him.
You know how this story ends: Richmond was arrested this week in his hometown and charged with: “aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, battery, disorderly conduct, possession of a firearm and assault.” It’s too early to tell what will stick and what won’t, but his future basketball prospects are certainly bleak.
Richmond was being held in lieu of $100,000 bond after he was arrested after a confrontation in front of a Waukegan residence in the 3000 block of Golfmoor at about 12:30 p.m. with a female with whom he reportedly had been in a relationship. Police found a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson semi-automatic handgun in a vehicle with three other men who also were arrested, according to Waukegan Police Commander Gabe Guzman.

If only he was a pro, this could have all been swept under the rug.
On the flip side, if he was playing Alabama football, SbB would be going through his trash right now.
/actually doesn’t mind SbB

During a lockout, will they still have a draft? And will there still be 27 mock drafts on TBL? I was hoping we’d get a break from the NBA in the media this year.

Do you mean next year? Because the 2011 draft already happened. Regardless, the answer to your second question is yes

Jereme Richmond is a moron who against the advice of his coach declared for the draft after playing essentially half a season of college basketball at what can only be deemed an above-average level. What this kid had on his mind declaring for the draft I have no idea. There was no chance he was a first round pick and slim to none chance he got selected at all.
Coaches generally have an idea what they’re talking about with your draft projection. Yes, even Bruce Weber. I don’t feel bad for this kid one iota.

Richmond valued his uncle’s opinion over his coach’s. Dumbass

I don’t know what it is, but I can’t help but be a complete dick in the Janoff posts.
August 10th, 2011 at 1:14 PM
Not to mention there’s this thing called a lockout going on so even if he did get drafted, he wouldn’t be playing anywhere in 2011-12. What a fuck up.

Me neither. That’s why I quite even clicking on his links. Some of my Janoff posts were becoming Paoloesque.

How is this a cautionary tale? This kid is a punk who took his ball and went home because he had a spat with his coach. He could have transferred instead of entering the draft. And then he gets himself arrested for assualt with a firearm.
The lesson to be learned from this tale: Don’t be a punk-ass douchebag.

If he was being paid by the college, he wouldn’t have felt the need to pistol whip this girl.

He’s an idiot, but not because of this. Lockout wasn’t in effect as of the date to declare.

I was gonna give this kid a second chance this upcoming season if he came buck, but he didn’t.
He deserted the team in January and went back home, got punched out by a teammate after Richmond got in his face after blowing a game against Michigan (happens often under Weber), and then was benched during the NCAA Tournament for either grades or smoking pot.
Kid never got his head on straight
August 10th, 2011 at 1:46 PM
Ummm, what? Darius Morris got drafted in the high 2nd round by his hometown team that desperately needs his position. I’d say things are looking good for him now.

About as weak as your comprehension skills. That 34 pts and 21 rebounds was as a freshman in HIGH SCHOOL. How else could Illinois subsequently offer a scholarship? This isn’t the SEC.
