I guess we can look at guys who started a lot early but didn’t catch a lot as an indication of a run blocker. Mark Bruener would fit that. He played until 30 with Pittsburgh, though he missed 11 games the last two years. He then played two more with Houston.

Clarence Kay played until 31, never had more than 440 receiving yards.

I was thinking of it in terms of primarily blocking TEs vs. primarily pass-catching TEs. Sharpe is obviously the ultimate in pass-catching 1st, 2nd & 3rd with Tony Gonzalez right on his heels. Shockey’s more of a blocker than most people probably realize but he also just ended up being injury prone beyond that. I’ve always thought of Boss as being an extra blocker who just happened to be a decent pass catcher along the way
