Things to File Away For Next Year’s NFL Draft: Arizona State’s Vontaze Burfict Punched Out a Teammate
Vontaze Burfict is widely regarded as one of the best linebackers in the country, and a first-round lock next year if he enters the NFL draft. At his best, he’s got the speed and power of Lawrence Taylor.
Sure, he’s had some problems in the past – Burfict barely qualified academically (he needed a summer class) and last year he was suspended by his coach for taking too many cheap shots on opponents. Nick Fairley did the same thing and was crucified online; Burfict, because he plays for the lowly Sun Devils, basically caught no heat.
Burfict’s latest transgression is that he threw a punch at a teammate in the locker room. It’s still unclear what happened, but Burfict definitely threw at least one punch. From the Republic:
According to a source, Burfict waited for Ozier in the locker room. He threw a punch, Ozier threw a punch and the fight was broken up
And from Sports by Brooks:
In the aftermath of a verbal confrontation between Burfict and Arizona State wide receiver Kevin Ozier during a Wednesday Sun Devil practice, the star ASU linebacker initiated a blindside attack on Ozier from inside the team’s locker room, sucker-punching the diminutive wide receiver in the face.
The force of the blow knocked Ozier, who Burfict outweighs by 50 pounds, to the ground.
Ozier, who was initially unresponsive after Burfict delivered the brutal, blindside shot to his head, eventually recovered from the assault.
This guy will fit in perfectly with the Steelers or Ravens, right? Nah, he never gets by the Raiders in the Top 10.

von. fucking. taze?

He has a serious attitude problem. I suspect he’ll drop farther than he should because of it, though the new CBA means paying these guys less, so maybe a team takes a chance on him. He’s an insane talent.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:15 PM
I thought “first round lock” seemed like hyperbole until I got to the next part about Lawrence Taylor. Wow
August 8th, 2011 at 2:16 PM
Sure, because the Steelers have a long history of drafting people with disciplinary problems in college.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:16 PM
Fucking Yes.

And from Sports by Brooks:

August 8th, 2011 at 2:18 PM
Raiders would use two first round picks in a row (for them) on MLB? Both in the top 10?
His on-field transgressions in the clips weren’t terrible. Punching a teammate is pretty bad though.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:18 PM
They wait until they get to Methburgh before they break bad.

Sure, because the Steelers have a long history of drafting people with disciplinary problems in college.
They wait until they get to Methburgh before they break bad.

August 8th, 2011 at 2:22 PM
Clearly you meant Panthers and Redskins right? Those teams have had blatant in-fighting, while Steelers and Ravens have not. Those two teams just fight each other, not their own teams.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:24 PM
the new CBA means paying these guys less, so maybe a team takes a chance on him. He’s an insane talent.
I think this is the biggest point made. The new wage scale means teams can try for a risky talent and not be burdened with a major cap hit if it backfires.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:25 PM

Big Ben, Santonio, Mendenhall, james harrison, hines ward have all been in the news for acts that were less than classy while they were in a Steelers uniform. Don’t go down this road son, it’s a dangerous one filled with run-ins with the law.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
How does punching a team mate hurt ones draft stock when teams have shown that they have no problem drafting prospects with charged with felonies or even arrests for sexual assault?
August 8th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
hines ward has been continually allowed to be the dirtiest player in the NFL without nary a word from anyone.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
Mendenhall with the bullshit 9-11 comments and Osama sympathy.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:29 PM

oh, not me. The last thing I want from a football player is a nasty disposition. Ew, and a tendency towards violence? I’ll pass.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
It seems everyone’s forgotten Hines Ward’s DUI already
August 8th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
Not one team in the NFL is going to pass up on Burfict because of this.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
It seems everyone’s forgotten Hines Ward’s DUI already
Also, his participation in Dancing with the Stars. Lord knows how many STD’s he contracted and therefore will spread because of the skanks he banged on that show.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
steelers were fueled by steroids in the 70′s. beat the seahawks thanks to shoddy refereeing. and their fans are universal assholes.
and that’s not even mentioning the fact that the rooneys were allowed to own and operate dog tracks despite every other owner in the nfl not being allowed to be associated with gambling.
contract and/or liquidate em. buncha cheaters.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
Well, Cincinnati will be drafting him.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:30 PM

August 8th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
He’s going to stab someone on the field and receive a standing ovation for it. One has to wonder what Ray Murda was doing in college before the internet got all snoopy.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:32 PM
Vince Wilfork and Cortland Finnergan.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:32 PM
He needs a DUI first. I’ll be rooting for him.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:32 PM
I don’t know that I bandy the word “classy” around regarding the Steelers organization, but I do very often compliment that organization.
Are they classy? Probably not, since they employ a defense full of junkyard dogs and barely street-legal lunatics. Do they run a nice organization? Yessir.
James Harrison seems likely to end up incarcerated though.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
Eagles will take him…
August 8th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
have either of them broken a guy’s jaw from a blindside hit? no.
they’re annoying, not filthy like hines. hines is pure evil.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
hmmm… its missing something… trying to put my finger on it… oh yeah, RIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNGGGGGZZZZZ!!
August 8th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
One has to wonder what Ray Murda was doing in college before the internet got all snoopy
Dennis Erickson recruit, so he’s got that in common with Vontaze. Judging the Raytorious L52 by the standards of guilt by association (i.e., Warren Sapp and Rohan Marley) the worst he did in college was a bunch of coke and weed
August 8th, 2011 at 2:34 PM
Steelers are classy because the Terrible Towels raise money for a children’s hospital or something. Plus the Rooney’s hire black people. That’s all I got.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:34 PM
I love how I ask who aside from Ben has been accused of rape and everyone brings everything else into the comments…
I never once said the Steelers were a perfect organization, but I know there’s a strong anti-Steeler vibe here so whatever.

I am not trying to say Hines isn’t dirty, but just because that soft faggy bengals LB can’t take a hit while playing football does not mean that was a dirty hit.
/What Hines did to Ed Reed away from the play is a better example
August 8th, 2011 at 2:35 PM
Ahem. This comment section hates the JETS, not Steelers.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
Punching a teammate like this just brings to mind homosexual WRs punching future Pro Bowl RBs in the face. Teams don’t like being reminded of things like that
August 8th, 2011 at 2:37 PM
you know how i know there isn’t a god? because steeler fans get to root for the most successful franchise in the NFL. this must be a job-like test from the great spaghetti monster.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:37 PM
I love how I ask who aside from Ben has been accused of rape and everyone brings everything else into the comments…
What does that have to do with anything? We didn’t accuse the steelers of being a “rapey” organization… just one that hires a bunch of dudes that don’t have much “class,” yet it’s constantly held up in some glorious “classy” light because their owner is tight with the Big O. I have no problem with an organization taking on guys with less than stellar characters, that’s how college football teams are good for the most part (see: florida) but just don’t go pretending they’re a bunch of falsely accused saints. Which is the first thing steelers fans go to “He was only ACCUSED…” yada yada yada.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
the rooney’s got together and gang raped this fat guy in the appalachian foothills before burt reynolds came in and saved the day.

This is obligatory with any mention of Finnegan.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:39 PM

I’m anti Rob Jules, the guy who comes in after Steeler losses to make excuses, and I don’t care to listen to the guys who are clueless who just want Big Ben listed in the top 5 QBs, but I love to watch steelers games.

Jets are the new fad in terms of hating. The Steeler hatred here is longstanding and burns with a hotter heat. Nobody will care about the Jets after they fall back to a mediocre record just like nobody cared about them 3 years ago.

August 8th, 2011 at 2:42 PM
You can thank the media for that. I’ve never once called them classy myself, just successful. In order to be successful at anything, you need a little unclassyness (yes I can make words up).
Based on football skills and winning, Ben is a Top 5 QB in the league. Brady, Manning, Rodgers, Brees, Ben.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:42 PM
Steelers are more hated than the Jets, and rightfully so.

Yes, winning games consistently does that.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:44 PM
Hatred level in the NFL (speaking for me);
1 – Cowgirls
2 – Giants
tied 3 – Jets/Steelers/Redskins

I’m pretty sure that would end my commenting career
August 8th, 2011 at 2:45 PM

August 8th, 2011 at 2:46 PM
we don’t hate the colts for that.
we hate the steelers because of the fans, plain and simple. you people are horrible, horrible people. and im being generous calling you mutant cousinfuckers “people.”

August 8th, 2011 at 2:48 PM
Eh I don’t hate the Steelers. I despise how the Jets are covered and how their partisans on here act like they have the same history as teams like the Steelers or Niners or Cowboys. And for that matter, I hate the Cowboys too.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:48 PM
Ive grown up with the Yankees winning. I’m used to that.

that was a good TBLAD game. I wish those comments still existed.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:48 PM
For the record, I don’t hate the Steelers. Not one bit. Good defense is fun to watch and Troy has great hair. I also don’t root for a team in the AFC so it’s easier for me to be neutral to them.
Their fans, while they did take over Chicago in 2009, were actually quite nice to Chicagoans in the bars. I had more than one Steeler fan buy me a drink during that game. And the Bears actually won that one!

can’t wait. has Duffy been alerted yet?
August 8th, 2011 at 2:48 PM
To be fair, TBL has rooted for the Red Sox in the past.
/never forget
Is this true?
/Vows never to read a MLB post written by TBL ever again.

When I worked near the Princeton area/Rt. 1 corridor, I learned to hate the Giants more than the Cowboys. Giants fans were every-fucking-where. They made Jets and Steeler fans seem charming by comparison.

WHAT?
August 8th, 2011 at 2:49 PM
It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to!
August 8th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
This is great.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
Oh, it’s true. It’s DAMN true.
/Kurt Angle
If there were archives, you could look back and see a young TBL rooting for the Red Sox against the Rays in the ALCS.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:51 PM
For some reason, he was totally against the Rays getting in good in 2008. So he rooted for the Sox to beat them. It was really weird.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:51 PM
just call em “preseason champs” and they shut up.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:52 PM
Giants fans were every-fucking-where.
I live nestled between Giants fans and Pats fans. (and yanks and sox). All of them suck, but the Giants fans are the worst.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:53 PM
so..any thoughts on Ricky Williams signing in Baltimore as a backup?
Was that discussed already?
August 8th, 2011 at 2:53 PM
Saw that Courtland Finnegan-Andre Johnson video, and had to find this version of it. The mic’d up one. You can hear the punches land and Finnegan grunting.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:53 PM
I’ll be here as long as Dirt is commenting and Spencer is spewing his hyperbolic bile.
/I mean that as a compliment
August 8th, 2011 at 2:54 PM
I rooted for the Red Sox in 2004 AFTER they beat the Yankees. I use the term “root” loosely. I hate the Cardinals more than the Red Sox because of the Cub roots and at that point, I just wanted the curse to be over and for baseball to have a great story of how it ended.
As soon as Foulke got that last out though, I was immediately cleansed of any and all positive sentiments regarding the Boston Beanballers. But in 2008, I was pulling HARD for the Rays. A Boston repeat would have been catastrophic.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:54 PM
I live in Giants country now. It blows. I miss living in Bills country by a long shot
August 8th, 2011 at 2:54 PM
I thought you reserve your hard pulling for Jeter.

Good signing by the Ravens, but I love Ricky so may be bias. I was really bummed when I say he went to them.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:55 PM
I picture every Giants fan as Patton Oswalt, or that crying fan from youtube.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:55 PM
I can never root for the Red Sox. Ever.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:56 PM
That’s pretty much where I work/live. I can deal with the Giants fans somewhat because they aren’t complete assholes like Jets fans are. Also the whole winning Superbowls since 1969 as well.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:56 PM
That wired version is tremendous, Finnegan got punked big time.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:56 PM
god damnit…i could root for sticky ricky on the steelers, but not the ravens man. not the fucking ravens.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:57 PM
2007 was the hardest baseball season to go through. I wanted the Tribe to win that ALCS so badly. Watching them piddle those last 3 games down their leg was brutal. The Rockies in the World Series just didn’t seem like it was real. You kinda knew they were getting beaten, and quickly.
Sorry if I opened your wounds there, Clevelanders. I felt your pain.

The playoff series J.D. Drew earned his contract. Carmona is still picking splinters out of his ass

Spence secretly harbors love for James Harrison. I know he does.
August 8th, 2011 at 2:59 PM
well that’s just a horrifying mental image.
August 8th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
it’s not secret at all…ive loved james harrison from before he was a starter. it started when he decapitated a browns fan who ran on the field during the xmas eve game where the stillers put it in the browns’ starfish dry. was in the endzone about 5 rows back…had a nice view.
also, anyone that’s crazy enough to be nicknamed “silverback” by a bunch of NFL players on the roughest team in the league must be fucking amazing.

Tampa Bay should draft him and put his locker next to LaGarrett’s.

Burfit will end up becoming ineligible because of academic problems. Just a guess.
