In fact, back to pulling tires out of the Blue River, I did that because I volunteered at Lakeside Nature Center in KC by the zoo. We rehabbed native animals. I was the bird’s of prey and snake dude on Saturdays. Big fun. My wife flicked the penises of baby squirrels and rabbits. I gave mice to snakes and red-tailed hawks.

that was actually really fun. meet up with a dude pre-dawn and hop on some ATV’s and ride up a 10 mile stretch of beach starting at sunrise looking for sea turtle tracks and nests from the previous night. we then had to hand dig (like with your hands, not with a shovel) down to find the eggs and count them and then re-bury it all. we had one leatherback nest that was massive. 4 people digging for hours. we probably moved an entire dump truck’s worth of sand by hand and then had to move it all back. the skin peeled off my fingertips for weeks. all those folks were major tree huggers, but they were good people and it was a lot of fun.

Three of four years ago, the Kansas Wildlife Department had the hogs shot by helicopter out in Clinton Lake State Park. They were tearing the place to hell.

That makes sense. We had 200 x 40 x some really deep depth burn pile off behind the old farmhouse where we just stored implements and fence stuff. If something died on the farm, we’d just throw it back in truck to dumpoff the next time we were going by the burnpile. The dogs never got out there. Not any skunks, just possums, coons and farm dogs that lost the race the hard way chasing trucks going by on the road.

And diesel was used as fuel when we burned. Lots and lots of it.

when I was laid off two years ago, I volunteered for a nature center/estuarine research reserve. including some sea turtle patrol,they had me doing some photography for their upcoming brochures. I was in a clearing in a pine flatwoods ecosystem trying to get a shot of a pine snake that had infiltrated a gopher tortoise hole and had taken over. there was all this rustling getting closer so I climbed a tree and waited. this pack of feral hogs came strolling through. three huge sows and 8 little babies, probably smaller than 12 inches long each. I got some good shots of them and the reserve sent them off to the state. the state in turn funded another hunter to come in at night to hunt the hogs. they tear the shit out of everything and they multiply way faster than the gators can eat them for population control.
