The Iconic Dream Team of ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Sports Illustrated’s Peter King
They are all over our internets and television. They travel the world, get paid more than you and me (well, definitely me, not sure about you), have a sense of entitlement, and tend to say petulant or irresponsible things at times – it’s bound to happen when you speak so often to the media. I’m speaking, of course, of the national celebrity sports writer/reporter. The story shouldn’t be about them, but sometimes it is.
This weekend, we had two different cases of the use of a powerful voice in an irresponsible fashion. On Saturday, Adam Schefter said via Twitter “Eagles already are referring to themselves as ‘The Dream Team.” Over 800,000 people follow Adam Schefter’s messages, and that particular one was passed on (re-tweeted for us cool kids) by well more than 100 to their followers.
Was it remotely accurate? No. At best it was irresponsible. Twitter can be a powerful tool, though, with short messages passed on quickly and viewed, often amongst many others in real time, that form a blurry and spontaneous reality. I had something saying, “yes, the Eagles did say this” in the back of my head, probably from glancing over this tweet that day.
“The Eagles” would imply an organization or even at best a large group of notable players saying this. From what I can find, the reference comes from a singular quote from now backup quarterback Vince Young, about joining the organization and all the other moves they were making at the time. While taken out of context, it makes it seem that Young is declaring the Eagles to be on the level with, say, the USA Olympic Basketball team, or a historically great football team, that’s probably not what he meant. He was specifically asked about what he thought of the Eagles in free agency so far:
“Dream Team. From [CB] Nnamdi [Asomugha] to [CB Dominique Rodgers-] Cromartie, and from [DE] Jason [Babin] to myself, I know they’re going to do some more things. It’s beautiful to see where we’re trying to go. I’m all for it. Whatever they ask me to do, to be scout team quarterback or quarterback learning, do whatever it is. I just want to be here to help and be a part of a team. I’m just happy to be a part of the Philadelphia Eagles.”
Maybe he was being conceited and declaring the team the Super Bowl favorites. The Dream Team line certainly spawned lots of commentary. I read it more in the context of a dream organization for him that is willing to go out and make these moves to win. Nothing wrong with saying that.
But Schefter’s tweet is like the whisper game, about 10 people down the line. It is presented as fact, and portrays an image. It furthers a narrative. But it is irresponsible because it is not true in any way.
Then there is Peter King. He apparently was taking in practice at Panthers’ camp Sunday. Afterward, he sent this message out:
Interesting but not too surprising: Just got stiffed at Panther camp by Cam Newton. Chose not to talk to me post-evening practice.
Peter King is followed by almost 600,000 people, and much like with with Schefter’s tweet, it was re-sent by well over 100 people to everyone else that follows them, and spread like wildfire. (For comparison, just so you don’t get the impression everything King says is passed along so vigorously, his later tweet about coffee at a McDonalds was for some reason sent along by six desperate souls.)
As Toby Maguire once told us, with great power comes great responsibility. King acts like a toddler who didn’t get his toy at the sandbox. Did everyone who read that or passed that along understand the nuances there, and what King really might have meant by “not too surprising?” Probably not. Did he explain that several months earlier, leading into the combine, he casually tweeted out after he did get a private interview with Newton:
Newton: “I see myself not only as a football player, but an entertainer and icon.” Ron Rivera, Chan Gailey, John Harbaugh blanch.
This launched quite a storm about Cam Newton and his attitude. It caused Cam Newton to have to explain the comments, and he didn’t really throw Peter King under the bus publicly (unlike King’s behavior last night), even though I think it’s quite possible Newton felt at best taken out of context. King’s “not too surprising” then may be referring to Newton not wanting to be “misunderstood” by King in a private conversation again. I wasn’t there and Cam Newton didn’t talk to me either, so I don’t know the full details–maybe he had other commitments, maybe he just didn’t want to talk to King specifically but did talk to others. King, though, conveys a certain feeling with words like “not too surprising” and “stiffed”.
But King knows how people will take those comments. They further a storyline. They insert King into the story. It’s almost like, in addition to being a writer, he thinks he’s an icon and an entertainer who is bigger than the stories he reports.

PK is a wise man. He picked the Lions to reach the Superbowl.

August 1st, 2011 at 12:10 PM
Wonderful post. I feel like this stuff is getting worse because of Twitter and the need to cause a splash, or to be first on a ‘story’. Shalize Manza Young, Patriots beat writer, decided to tweet on Saturday that it was likely that Haynesworth failed his conditioning test on Saturday because he wasnt practicing. Then on Sunday we find out he took his conditioning test THAT morning and so was starting practice that day. Just shitty guessing and throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks ‘reporting’.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:12 PM
Always got to be the first one with the story.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:14 PM
great point, agree totally.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:14 PM
Anyone notice how ESPN always adds (as reported by ESPN’s Jon Clayton, Adam Schefter, etc.) to the bottom line when they update an injury/story? Breaking NFL news, no matter how inconsequential, has become a dick measuring contest. It’s one thing if it’s big news (Asomugha) to the Eagles, but who cares who first reported Cam Newton’s bowel movement?
August 1st, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Get used to it, pal.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:16 PM
schefter is such a turd. he likes to throw doodoo against the wall quite often. maybe he is part monkey.

Some random Sportscenter anchor was practically wetting himself in excitement over the “Dream Team” comment. Seriously, his voice was practically doing the Tim Kurkjian high-pitched crack.

But what about Favre?
August 1st, 2011 at 12:17 PM
Scott Howard’s dad said it first. Teen Wolf . . . great movie.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:18 PM
I’m souring on Schefter. Tebow is to Schefter as Favre was to King.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:18 PM
I’m not a fan of the Shefter smug factor, but let’s at least give the man some credit. He’s probably slept 5 hours in the last week and has broken most of the important signings in this FA period. He also is quick to give credit (or in the case of Twitter, mentions) to other reporters when they find something out before he does.
One tweet about the “Dream Team” isn’t that big a deal. You can read further to find out who said it and what the 140 characters or less meant if you so choose.
PK on the other hand, I love the guy but his musings on coffee, air travel and hotels are really only useful to me when being FJM’d by Magary on Monday mornings.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:19 PM
PK is as big a name-dropper as they come, but please don’t lump the generally accurate and business-like Schefter in the same category.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:19 PM
Anyone notice how ESPN always adds (as reported by ESPN’s Jon Clayton, Adam Schefter, etc.) to the bottom line when they update an injury/story
i cant stand that either. also dont like the “as confirmed by…” bullshit as well.
this little week long trade window was awesome though. didnt have to hear 4 months worth of inaccurate crap.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:20 PM
I’ve been reading about how Cam is the last one to leave the practice fields because he stays around signing autographs. I see that as a good thing – connecting with the fanbase. King may see that as a less important than talking to him thing. HuskerDawg will be along any second to madly point out Cam is full of himself for signing too many autographs.

Here’s a sample:
“Breaking news from ESPN news! ESPN’s Schefty spoke with ESPN’s Michael Kay on his ESPN radio show about Cam Newton’s interview with ESPN’s Chris Berman on ESPN’s football show.”
Makes me want to break stuff.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:20 PM
It’s one thing if it’s big news (Asomugha) to the Eagles, but who cares who first reported Cam Newton’s bowel movement?
Actually, I’m going to amend my statement…. even in the case of big news, I don’t think it matters. Can anyone remember who broke Favre to the Vikings, or Vick to the Eagles? Nobody cares aside from the networks/reporters reporting it. Like Lisk and CJ said: they’re trying to insert themselves into the story.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:20 PM
Was playing dodgeball and our team was up 7-2. A couple of games later someone announced that the score was 7-7 and the same score was repeated by 5 other people and at that time the new score could not be disputed. That on a scale of 800,000 people and you can understand why athletes never stray from the same old cliches in interviews. What’s their upside? If there are misrepresented it can never be taken back.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:21 PM
I’m also highly amused by TBL getting worked up re Schefter when he has posted much more “asinine” and “irresponsible” things before — which were full posts, not just 100 character tweets. (e.g., Ole Miss, Bernard Berrian, Steve McNair and any other examples that you’d all like to add).
August 1st, 2011 at 12:21 PM

Last week showed me the staggering amount of complete nobodies on Twitter passing themselves off as “reporters” or “insiders” or whatever. Tons of jabronis saying “Vikings heavily pursuing Braylon Edwards” when no such thing ever happened.

PK is just a lost cause. He’s a high-powered, highly-paid schill who knows enough people in the business to get sufficient access. But what was the last bit of news he generated? What was the last story he broke? Favre’s fifth comeback?
August 1st, 2011 at 12:27 PM
Peter King is perfectly self-aware. He knows that he’s supposed to represent the voice of the “regular guy.” He’s a fan with access covering football. He’ll give you his thoughts on what he does every day if you want them or not.
I think there are more people who like what they read from Peter King than don’t. And for some reason, the people who say they don’t like Peter King keep reading him anyways. I know what I’m getting from PK when I read MMQB.

He knows that he’s supposed to represent the voice of the “regular guy.”
But he doesn’t represent the regular guy… that’s my point. He bitches about gourmet coffee, talks about his great season tickets at fenway, and goes on a European vacation during one of the busiest times for NFL ‘reporters.’
August 1st, 2011 at 12:31 PM
Have to preface this with the fact that Adam Schefter blocked me on Twitter after I called him out. He was passing along “news” on the bogus Jon Gruden to Univ of Miami rumors and I merely pointed out to him that it’s tough to take his college fb news seriously after he reported as FACT that Bob Stoops had accepted the Notre Dame job one year prior.
That being said, “Schefty” is a douche among douches. He does not “break” news. What he does, if you follow him closely, is pass long information merely minutes, and in some cases seconds, before the teams themselves confirm, issue statements, send out press releases. My belief is that Schefter, through his work at the Denver Post covering the Broncos, cultivated relationships throughout the NFL PR and team media relations departments and they tip him off to what they are about to release. To those that do not know better, it seems as if Schefter is breaking some secret news story. Chris Mortenson, meanwhile actually breaks stories because he has relationships with the actual personnel departments in many of the teams’ front offices. Sure, he’s not tied to nearly as many “tibits” or “stories,” but that is only because he is actually breaking news.
If you don’t believe it, take a look at the Nnamdi story. Schefter had no idea about the Eagles. Reports it as “Breaking News,” comes up with some BS that he was getting various phone calls from sources, and 2 minutes later the Eagles issue a statement confirming they have agreed to terms with Nnamdi and setup a press conference with Andy Reid. Hmmm quite the coincidence that the team was so well prepared following Schefter breaking this news.
Fk that guy.

I don’t dislike Schefter, I may have taken a dumb jab at him for his 27-year old dead singer tweet, but he has sources and he gets the job done. Not a fan of any “analysis” he does, but if he is scooping news, great.
I personally can’t get through a King column, but I’ll go seek it out if someone tells me or I hear about a specific topic he discussed.

This year with the lockout it was. It wasn’t any information I cared to hear about, but Mort, Schefter and Sal were standing outside a hotel everyday for about 3 weeks.

All of this right here.
Go back and read his Free Agency predictions in last week’s sports illustrated…. he got about 3 out of 32 correct, none of the top 10 FA’s. How much inside information does he really have? He’s got a great job and knows how keep it, more power to him. But you can’t argue that he does anything other than throw shit at the wall most of the time.

Doesn’t everyone have benign or boring tweets in their timeline? Are we to expect PK and Shefter to have some groundbreaking analysis or massive scoop with every tweet?
I see all the tweets in my timeline; doesn’t mean I read, comprehend and react to them all. Twitter is what you make of it. Which is why Darren Rovell telling me how to use it and how not to use it makes little sense to me.

I started to consciously trim my down a few weeks ago, was just becoming too much. Currently at 46.

Had to unfollow Jason Alexander after about 3 hours… all his tweets are political.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:57 PM
Go figure. No team was going to touch him after last year

Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out

Like 400. It’s too much and I need to trim down.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:58 PM
34…mainly writers, a bunch of you guys/girls, the Eagles and LoMo & Vick.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:58 PM
i don’t follow Schefter. Everyone is quick to RT him anyway, so it’s pointless.

I’m up to 235 following.. yeah its probably too much
August 1st, 2011 at 12:58 PM
I was expecting so much more out of Jack Donaghy. The political activism was not what I wanted. Make with the funnah.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:58 PM
Did you get this from the Twitter feed of King, Schefer or Glazer?
August 1st, 2011 at 12:59 PM
Another thing you can do is create a “List” on Twitter and put feeds that interest you in there. You don’t even have to follow them in order to list them. You get their updates and don’t crowd your TL.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:59 PM
646… I just trimmed it down from over 700. I follow a LOT of Blackhawks fans. Like, 150 or so.

/notices I’m not in CJ’s top 235

Banders’ recent run of catching up on Game of Thrones has been entertaining
August 1st, 2011 at 1:00 PM
That’s someone I need to follow…
August 1st, 2011 at 1:00 PM
John Buccigross. Who, if you’re not following, is actually quite good. In the AM around 8 EST he’s got a nice recap of what happened the prior day and his thoughts on it. Everything from baseball, football, hoops and hockey. Even some soccer.
He talked a lot of hockey during the season, so be wary if you’re not into pucks.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:00 PM
How many people do you all follow? I’m up near 80 and I’m starting to think that’s too much.
I started to consciously trim my down a few weeks ago, was just becoming too much. Currently at 46.
I’m up to 112. But I will trim every now and again.

si_vault is the most invaluable Twitter follow, IMO. I can’t believe only 21,000 follow him. So much great stuff.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:05 PM
I think I need to do more Twitter and less Facebook.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:06 PM
Athletes are undoubtedly the worst follows. I mostly follow beat writers of my teams and TBL’ers. Oh and Jesus M. Christ.

Made the mistake, again, of flipping on ESPN radio last week. Mike and Mike, even. In one rambling sentence, Greenberg used the ridiculous nickname of “Schefty” at least 5 times. I actually screamed at the radio.

Stoops to ND.

Actually, John Buccigross FTW!

I think Schefter wants to reach through the phone and strangle this whiny metro everytime he says “Schefty”.

Kate Upton video.

I think I follow up about 1000.

You’re an ascetic.

Dudes, the only people from TBL land that I follow are TBL, Hernia, and sportsgal. Get over it.

agreed. I’m up to about 300, but not all active at the same time–some college basketball guys, who are mostly silent now, some personal ones that rarely tweet, some football, and a decent amount of commenters and random people just to get some flavor. But when it’s busy or something notable is happening, my phone will go back like 20 minutes and have a ton of tweets. I probably need to organize lists better.

I occasionally have to do media interviews, working in “handle the duty” to amuse myself and see if I can say it with a straight face (if on tv) or get it in print. The other day I used Bryant Gumble’s “paucity”. It made it in. Kind of a life high-point…

I’d give ten Schefters for one Jay Galzer if I was the mothership

You really should be following CRM and clown. I don’t know why you bothered with me in the first place, either. I recall being cut for having a one word tweet like “sigh” or something.
Don’t worry, I caught on with another team.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:25 PM
CRM I followed for a while… but MMA is really really really boring to me
August 1st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
Think I’m following around 90. Mostly TBL folk and hockey.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:27 PM
I only follow sportswriters and porn stars. Same group of people–really.
August 1st, 2011 at 5:03 PM
I agree with every word. This is a really great post. It helps put the concept of Twitter in perspective. The whisper game is the perfect analogy. Twitter is the height of narcissism. I’ll never have a Twitter account. The last thing I want to be known for or judged by are my off-hand comments and out-of-context remarks, which is what the content of Twitter is primarily comprised of.

Excellent post. Only thing you forgot to mention is that King is a complete blowhard fool. Schefter is better…..but not by much.
