TBL, where is Lance Alworth on your list? Bambi was unstoppable in his prime. You are clearly too young to remember him. And Al Toon? Your NY Jets homerism is way off the charts on that one. He’s not even in the NY Jets RING OF HONOR. Don Maynard was twice the receive that Toon was.

He’s retired until he decides to make a comeback with Brett Favre for the Washington Redskins. Neither one of them likes training camp and the Skins ain’t got much at WR and they got Nothing at QB so it might happen. Don’t laugh yet.

Rating WRs is so difficult because ther are so many things that are out of their control. I mean, “Did I remember to get the sharpie in the socks before I got taped up” or “Have I called my QB a name this week to a reporter?” – “Did I pick the ghostwriter for my biography where I mention my preference to receiving the football a large amount of times”. The only thing harder to decide is if Derek Jeter is the best Yankee or the greatest Yankee.

So, wait, if he wasn’t top 5 then why are you so adamant about Emmitt Smith also not being top 5? If none of the Cowboys from that era are all-time greats because all the rest of the Cowboys from that era are all time greats then which ones were really great and which ones were refractions of greatness? So ESPN’s new passer rating system looks pretty good.

My concern is that we are not going to be seeing how the sausage is made entirely, and it will be some proprietary “here’s the number” so we can’t evaluate it.

I mean, I could get a pretty good list looking at current seasonal stats, and adding in things like WPA and EPA from Advanced NFL Stats (which also use pbp data) or Football Outsiders ratings. I’m just curious if this adds anything and was backtested to points and wins.

I don’t doubt that, but to be fair those guys should be commended for making a concerted effort to permanently phase out passer rating.

Agreed. Though, like you said, it’s not like they have much resistance. No one likes QB rating.

I don’t doubt that, but to be fair those guys should be commended for making a concerted effort to permanently phase out passer rating. Thankfully football’s not like baseball, where the headline stats will never change in a million years.
