Randy Moss Retires
Randy Moss, one of the most explosive receivers in NFL history, is retiring, according to his agent. As we’ve seen before in the NFL, these “retirement” announcements are often highly overrated, and if a team has an injury, or thinks it could use one more piece to put them over the top, Randy Moss could be fielding offers to return to the league a few weeks into the season. Moss is 34 years old and I wish the Jets had gone after him instead of Plaxico Burress over the weekend. (I’d rather they gave the money to Braylon Edwards, but let’s save that for another post.)
Naturally, the Moss haters (I’m not one of them) will focus on Randy’s lethargic years in Oakland and an ugly end to his career in New England, Minnesota and Tennessee, but Moss will end up being remembered as one of the best receivers in NFL history.
The receiving stats: 954 catches, 14,858 yards, 153 touchdowns. He’s a Hall of Fame lock. I don’t think anyone would rate Moss ahead of Jerry Rice on whatever subjective “best receiver in NFL history” list you want to come up with, but the kid from West Virginia – by way of Marshall, though it should have been Notre Dame or Florida State – has a strong case for No. 2.
I wouldn’t put Terrell Owens over Moss, nor would I put Cris Carter (who still can’t get into the Hall of Fame), or Michael Irvin or Marvin Harrison.
My list:
1. Jerry Rice
2. Randy Moss
3. Don Hutson (nope, never saw him – not even video!)
4. Terrell Owens
5. Michael Irvin
6. Marvin Harrison
7. Paul Warfield (nope, never saw him – not even video!)
8. Steve Largent
9. Cris Carter
10. Al Toon
Hilarious.
The low point of Joe Buck’s announcing career.

What a weird season that was
August 1st, 2011 at 1:21 PM
Damn, he was burning Revis just last year. Wish he would’ve stuck around. He’s very entertaining.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:21 PM
Al Toon!
August 1st, 2011 at 1:21 PM
This was for dirt, wasn’t it?
August 1st, 2011 at 1:22 PM
I don’t know if I would put Moss as #2, but he’s definitely Top 5 and a HoF lock in my book.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:22 PM
If it’s your list, feel free to leave out the guys you’ve never seen.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:22 PM
No point in even having the discussion, then, since it’s a foregone conclusion…
/waits for discussion
August 1st, 2011 at 1:23 PM
I actually like this better for the Jets. Plax has something to prove now that he’s out of prison… and bills to pay. Moss has plenty of money and nothing left to prove other than winning a Super Bowl. That didn’t motivate him enough last year in a contract year.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:23 PM
No. 10 is a joke right?
August 1st, 2011 at 1:24 PM
Needs more Charley Taylor.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:24 PM
Marvin Harrison?
August 1st, 2011 at 1:24 PM
How sad is it that the one thing I’ll remember most about Randy is “straight cash homey?”
I probably say that line twice a week.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:24 PM
Honestly, I can’t dispute TBL putting Moss at #2. Watched plenty of Rice & Moss, and they are the best WR I’ve ever seen.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:25 PM
Absolutely not.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:25 PM
He’ll be back.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:25 PM
Art Monk’s name is likely to be brought up here.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:26 PM
Toooooooon! Surprised you didn’t go with Wayne Chrebet.
Moss/Favre is an interesting HOF class.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:27 PM
Sad Flipper Anderson didn’t make TBL’s list.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:27 PM
It also provided the namesake for this tremendous web site.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:27 PM
Can’t believe this was 13 years ago.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:27 PM
I wouldn’t say that’s sad, that line was just really that good.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:28 PM
Just beat out Carl Pickens.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:29 PM
I know why it wasn’t included, but this is a pretty sweet Moss moment.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:29 PM
Straight cash homey.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:30 PM
Please don’t.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:31 PM
List needs more Sterling Sharpe
August 1st, 2011 at 1:31 PM
Sad Flipper Anderson didn’t make TBL’s list.
One of only 3 receivers to win an OT Divisional Round game with a walkoff touchdown.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:32 PM
I’d be remiss, being a huge Moss fanboy til the end, if I didn’t link some of my favorite highlights, namely his single-handed demolition of the Cowboys on Thanksgiving in ’98.
TD #1, TD #2, TD #3. Watch the third one if you want to see how effing fast he really was. Summerall: “He is incredible!” When did you ever hear Summerall say that about anyone? Warning, the audio is shitty and really effing loud so turn your volume down.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:33 PM
So, is this website not functioning properly for anyone else? Like, smiley face avatars and whatnot? And loading slower than a white WR?
August 1st, 2011 at 1:33 PM
Can someone get my comment out of moderation? It’s got 3 youtube links in it, my bad
August 1st, 2011 at 1:33 PM
Thanks, SC.
/slaps SC on back of head
It was real freaky. I was at that game, then was at the Monday nighter when he was a Viking. Just weird. Scored a touchdown in that one, too. The team he played for last that game, too.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:33 PM
Steve Smith and I don’t know the other.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:33 PM
If I never looked at stats and only went off what 12-15 year old me thinks, Flipper Anderson would be neck and neck with Stephon Paige, Louis Lipps, and Webster Slaughter. Alas, none had the career my mind thinks they did.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:34 PM
You must have found all of Al Toon’s career highlights.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:35 PM
Another one of my favorites, against the Packers on MNF in ’98 at Lambeau. Sharper’s pathetic attempt at an arm tackle always slays me.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:35 PM
Steve Smith and I don’t know the other.
You know, I may have that wrong. I was thinking Ghost to the Post, but that didn’t score a TD, just immediately led to winning FG between Oakland and Baltimore.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:36 PM
Flipper and Slaughter would be right there for me, along with Anthony Carter, Haywood Jeffires and Roy Green.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:36 PM
Where’s Tim Brown?
August 1st, 2011 at 1:36 PM
Here’s #1…pretty clever play idea
August 1st, 2011 at 1:36 PM
moss was great.
playmaker over harrison? interesting. harrison was a bad, bad man…
August 1st, 2011 at 1:37 PM
Mine’s fucked as well
August 1st, 2011 at 1:38 PM
Never seen anything like his performance in that game…snapped the Lambeau winning streak that night too, had it been a title fight would have been called in the 3rd quarter
August 1st, 2011 at 1:39 PM
Yup … Broken picture link covers up half of what people are saying too
August 1st, 2011 at 1:39 PM
i call this “business as usual.”
August 1st, 2011 at 1:39 PM
Legendary
August 1st, 2011 at 1:40 PM
Andre Reed’s better than all those bitches.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:40 PM
Haywood Jeffires
I have that same opinion of all those WRs on the Warren Moon Oiler teams. All those guys were just flying all over the field.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:41 PM
Belgian hand gun > scissors ?
August 1st, 2011 at 1:43 PM
Also, I’m sending Tom Waddle an e-mail for his lack of inclusion here. No one got a concussion and came right back in the next play better than Tommy. That kind of toughness doesn’t grow on trees.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:43 PM
Raymond Berry should be included somewhere on that list. I don’t know where, or in what order, but he deserves to be mentioned.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:44 PM
Freddie Mitchell wants to know who in teh fuck is responsible for this list
August 1st, 2011 at 1:44 PM
The Run and Shoot really needs to make a comeback.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:45 PM
Fred Biletnikoff.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:45 PM
Raymond Berry should be included somewhere on that list. I don’t know where, or in what order, but he deserves to be mentioned.
Well, yeah, if we are era-adjusting and looking for dominance, Berry and Alworth are both in the top 10.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:45 PM
It took me like 10 clicks of the refresh button to finally get into this post, so ya’ll aren’t alone.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:46 PM
Still think the whole Mooning Incident was WAY overblown but sad to see him go..Moss on a Go Route was/still is a thing of beauty
August 1st, 2011 at 1:47 PM
+1 thanking of my hands
August 1st, 2011 at 1:47 PM
Here’s a serious question… Does Torry Holt make the Top 25 all-time? Top 50?
August 1st, 2011 at 1:47 PM
yes, Al Toon is a joke.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:47 PM
It’s definitely sad to know Moss won’t be on the field on Sundays. That guy was a killer when he wanted to be.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:48 PM
Is there a good advanced stat to help objectively evaluate wide receivers? I feel like there needs to be one.
Because discussions of wide outs tend to devolve into “ZOMG11!!! I had that guyz jersey and he was teh AWESOME1!!11″
August 1st, 2011 at 1:49 PM
I was more pissed of at Al Harris’ attempted coverage on the play…Favre added another four postseason interceptions to the total in that game
August 1st, 2011 at 1:49 PM
What about Isaac Bruce? Where does he fit into this conversation?
August 1st, 2011 at 1:49 PM
Thanksgiving against the Cowboys. Hell of a show. I really hope he unretires by tomorrow.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:49 PM
25? Yes. 20? Maybe not.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:50 PM
I dislike the placement of Mr. Alligator Arms Team Killer because of all that stuff I just called him out for but it’s a decent list. I loved Al Toon, but an honest accounting of WRs who had their careers cut short would give that spot to Sterling Sharpe
August 1st, 2011 at 1:50 PM
No Raymond Berry? Irvin over Marvin? Poopy. Moss was amazing, also an underachiever given his gifts. Which is nuts.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:50 PM
No. Love Holt, but definitely not top 25 or a HoF’er.
Better question…where does (non-fake)Steve Smith rank? Keep in mind that the best quarterback he ever had was Jake Delhomme.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:52 PM
Lower than Holt.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:53 PM
Here’s a serious question… Does Torry Holt make the Top 25 all-time? Top 50?
Definitely Top 50. Probably Top 25, though he faded quick, and the TD totals may limit. But make a list of guys as good as he was and you will start running out pretty quickly. I mean, guys like Gary Clark, Muhsin Muhammad and Derrick Mason have arguments to be right around #50
August 1st, 2011 at 1:53 PM
He’s probably around Holt, if not below. Delhomme was fine the first 6 or so years of his career.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:53 PM
Moss will be a Redskin by Wednesday
August 1st, 2011 at 1:55 PM
Ha. Nice.
I’d tick Harrison up a couple of spots, for sure.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:55 PM
ZOMG11!!! I had that guyz jersey and he was teh AWESOME1!!11
August 1st, 2011 at 1:56 PM
Torry Holt has the largest hands I’ve ever seen and shook hands with. He basically shook my hand and forearm. Only one I’ve ever seen shook hands with that comes close is MJ.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:56 PM
Michael Irvin top 5? What???
August 1st, 2011 at 1:56 PM
So ESPN’s new passer rating system looks pretty good.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:56 PM
Well played, sir.
/wish the Eagles had Isaac Bruce
August 1st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
Anyone been to Marvin Harrison’s bar? Sounds like a nice place.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:58 PM
TBL’s going to have a shit-fit when he sees Matt Ryan listed as “top tier.”
August 1st, 2011 at 1:58 PM
Pay your bar tab, people.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:00 PM
I never understood that.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:00 PM
Ha. Yeah. I said it looked pretty good. The project might have been code-named “how do we come up with something the Football Oustiders guys already do, but make it not seem that way”.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:02 PM
I don’t doubt that, but to be fair those guys should be commended for making a concerted effort to permanently phase out passer rating. Thankfully football’s not like baseball, where the headline stats will never change in a million years.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:02 PM
no Willie Gault?
/86 bear’d
August 1st, 2011 at 2:04 PM
Agreed. Though, like you said, it’s not like they have much resistance. No one likes QB rating.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:05 PM
So ESPN’s new passer rating system looks pretty good.
My concern is that we are not going to be seeing how the sausage is made entirely, and it will be some proprietary “here’s the number” so we can’t evaluate it.
I mean, I could get a pretty good list looking at current seasonal stats, and adding in things like WPA and EPA from Advanced NFL Stats (which also use pbp data) or Football Outsiders ratings. I’m just curious if this adds anything and was backtested to points and wins.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:07 PM
Brady, Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, Michael Vick, Rodgers and Drew Brees.
“Two of these things are NOT like the other ones…”
August 1st, 2011 at 2:08 PM
That wasn’t the sense I got reading it, more like “we’ll be unveiling the details shortly”. But if your concerns are realized, yeah, I agree. Crappy.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:10 PM
Michael Irvin top 5? What???
So, wait, if he wasn’t top 5 then why are you so adamant about Emmitt Smith also not being top 5? If none of the Cowboys from that era are all-time greats because all the rest of the Cowboys from that era are all time greats then which ones were really great and which ones were refractions of greatness? I’m confused
August 1st, 2011 at 2:18 PM
stabneck irvin is too high. that guys is so beyond normally graded.
August 1st, 2011 at 3:18 PM
Rating WRs is so difficult because ther are so many things that are out of their control. I mean, “Did I remember to get the sharpie in the socks before I got taped up” or “Have I called my QB a name this week to a reporter?” – “Did I pick the ghostwriter for my biography where I mention my preference to receiving the football a large amount of times”. The only thing harder to decide is if Derek Jeter is the best Yankee or the greatest Yankee.
August 1st, 2011 at 4:21 PM
Al Toon had the misfortune of having Ken OBrien and Pat Ryan as QB’s, which led to early retirement. He was a beast.
August 2nd, 2011 at 3:51 PM
He’s retired until he decides to make a comeback with Brett Favre for the Washington Redskins. Neither one of them likes training camp and the Skins ain’t got much at WR and they got Nothing at QB so it might happen. Don’t laugh yet.
August 2nd, 2011 at 4:49 PM
TBL, where is Lance Alworth on your list? Bambi was unstoppable in his prime. You are clearly too young to remember him. And Al Toon? Your NY Jets homerism is way off the charts on that one. He’s not even in the NY Jets RING OF HONOR. Don Maynard was twice the receive that Toon was.
