Andrew Luck Sweepstakes: Seattle, Miami, Washington and Buffalo Are Your Preseason Favorites
With the NFL free agent frenzy nearly complete and just about everyone is set at QB – Denver’s Kyle Orton is the only signal caller who could still be moved; I’m not counting Carson Palmer of Cincinnati, who the Bengals won’t trade – I decided to take a look at the NFL teams with the biggest QB issues. Why? Because the 2012 draft next April is loaded at QB, and there could be three snatched up in the first 15 picks.
(Some, cough, have speculated anyone who didn’t actively pursue a QB this year is tanking. We can revisit that in mid-October.)
The prime target is Stanford’s Andrew Luck, who would have gone No. 1 overall in the last draft. Oklahoma’s Landry Jones is probably Top 5 material, and USC junior Matt Barkley, if he came out, would go in the first round. Arizona’s Nick Foles could also sneak into the first round.
These five teams will probably be in the mix for the first overall pick:
* Seattle Seahawks – Pete Carroll named Tavaris Jackson the starter this weekend. Charlie Whitehurst is his backup. Neither of those guys is the long term solution. Sidney Rice is a nice pickup, but Jackson isn’t accurate enough to get him the ball regularly. Don’t be deceived by last year’s playoff win – this team stinks. Could easily be 0-5 when the bye rolls around.
* Miami Dolphins - They are supposedly trying to get Kyle Orton, but they’ve signed Matt Moore to compete with Chad Henne, so go figure. Back in April, I predicted the Dolphins would have the worst record in the league this season. If they aren’t able to bolster their running game with more than Reggie Bush (unless you think Kansas State rookie Daniel Thomas is going to be a factor), that offense will be anemic again. Schedule: They open with the Patriots, then face the Texans (who will be improved) and games four and five are against the Chargers and Jets. Three of their final four games: Eagles, Patriots, Jets. How does 4-12 sound?
* Washington Redskins - John Beck or Rex Grossman? Mediocre receivers. Mediocre running backs. Is the offensive line that much better? Is the defense? Andrew Luck in the nation’s capital would be a big deal, considering the popularity of the Redskins.
* Buffalo Bills – Ryan Fitzpatrick is not a bad QB, but he is most certainly not the long term solution. I’d actually rate Fitzpatrick ahead of Jackson, Henne and Beck (or Grossman), and the Bills open the season with three of four winnable games, so I don’t think they’ll be serious contenders for the worst record in the league. They have enough decent pieces on offense to win 6-7 games.
* Oakland Raiders – I’m a Jason Campbell fan, and he had a decent year in 2010 … but the Raiders picked up Trent Edwards to be his backup after losing Gradkowski. Offensively, the Raiders were as good last season as they’ve been in years, scoring 25 ppg and featuring one of the best running games in the league. But is the defense significantly better? The Raiders open with two road games (neither are definite losses, though) and then the Jets and Patriots come to town. Then they travel to Houston. If the Raiders start 0-5, do they go into “next year” mode and bench Campbell so Edwards can guide them to Andrew Luck?
Teams that just drafted a QB early in 2011, but could still have a terrible record and get in position for Andrew Luck:
* Cincinnati – Not sure why they wouldn’t try to at least get something for Carson Palmer, but whatever. So … rookie Andy Dalton vs. Bruce Gradkowski for the starting job. It remains to be seen of Dalton can be “the guy” or if he’s more of a career backup.
* Minnesota – I might like the Vikings this year … I’ll make up my mind in a week or two. But Donovan McNabb will start over rookie Christian Ponder. Is Ponder really the future?
* Jacksonville – David Garrard probably is the starter … unless first-round pick Blaine Gabbert beats him out in the preseason. But if that happens, and Gabbert is very good, there’s no need for Luck.
* Tennessee – They acquired Matt Hasselbeck to be a bridge to Jake Locker, but that’s assuming you think Jake Locker is starting material.
* San Francisco – Alex Smith was signed for one more year, so presumably, he’ll be the starter. 2nd round pick Colin Kaepernick could win the job. I think he falls into the same boat as Dalton, Ponder and Locker – there are glaring question marks about whether or not they are long-term options in this league. The 49ers are mostly on this list because of the Harbaugh-Luck connection.

Not to detract from your post, but are there any other names we should look for next year? Seems like there are more teams than normal that will be drafting/looking for a QB next draft.
I can guarantee Andrew Luck this… whoever he gets drafted by will be an awful NFL team.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:52 PM
You can, but shouldn’t because the whole notion of tanking is always a worthless conversation…why do the current players give a damn where the team is drafting, there’s no guarantee for most that they’ll be there the next season so they just go out and try to win football games
August 1st, 2011 at 1:53 PM
I forgot this guy even existed until you mentioned him in this post.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:55 PM
I am not sure Landry Jones is Top 5 material. Not really in Bradford’s class, which seems to be how he is being evaluated.
This list needs more Broncos too. Especially if they trade Orton. The Horse would love a fellow Stanford man.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
You can, but shouldn’t because the whole notion of tanking is always a worthless conversation…
He’s just trying to insert NBA practices into the NFL. Standard.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
But what about Jesus Tebow?
/Washington is going to win the Luck sweepstakes
August 1st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
Do you actually believe in tanking? That teams will purposely lose to get a high draft pick and coveted player?
August 1st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
That division is bad … bad enough, that the Seahawks won’t finish with the worst record, thus reuniting Petey with his boy Matt Barkely, who Carroll loves.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:58 PM
WHO’S READY TO SUCK FOR LUCK?!?!?!
August 1st, 2011 at 1:58 PM
The 49ers should mostly be on this list because they didn’t do dick in the offseason yet except lose out on people. They went into the offseason with a lot of holes, and have done nothing to fill those holes.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:58 PM
Do you actually believe in tanking? That teams will purposely lose to get a high draft pick and coveted player?
Again… he watches too much NBA.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:58 PM
?
dude hasn’t played a game yet…no shit the jury’s out.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:59 PM
Old regime picked him…and if they got 2-14 (again), it is likely because Tebow blew goats.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:59 PM
I currently have the Niners at the bottom of it which about 10 days ago I would have had them 2nd or even 1st. Not sure what the hell the Yorks are doing there. They haven’t done anything to make the team better.
I bet the Rams win the West… and 10 games this year. That’s my limb that I’m going out on for the NFL season.
August 1st, 2011 at 1:59 PM
Sounds like a segment Howard Stern would have on the radio
August 1st, 2011 at 2:00 PM
They’ll still be bad in two weeks
If it does exist the evidence is more like in the NBA where star players get benched but you see enough NFL games where teams win games late in the season because it’s more fun to win (see: last year’s Lions)
August 1st, 2011 at 2:01 PM
/Washington is going to win the Luck sweepstakes
As a Washington fan, I can guarantee you they’ll win enough games to miss out on Luck, but not enough to be competitive/interesting.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:01 PM
again…not sure seeing as he hasn’t played a game yet.
but i should hope the 12th overall pick is considered the future…
August 1st, 2011 at 2:01 PM
Oh, and the Browns will win 8 games, 4 in their own division. That’s my other limb.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:01 PM
I picked the rams to win the west by 3 games so I’m saying 11-5. Hell, the Bills could go to that division and make a run for it..
/looks at Jets and Patriots
//gets sad
///looks at Dolphins
////points and laughs
August 1st, 2011 at 2:02 PM
I don’t think any team in the NFL, under any circumstance would tank a game, let alone a season.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:02 PM
They’re gonna start 0-1 though…
/the Heat of the NFL
//someone punch 90% of the Eagles fanbase for believing that too
August 1st, 2011 at 2:02 PM
They’re going to beat the Ravens and Bengals twice each? You must be high.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:02 PM
You’re really going out on the limb with this prediction since four QBs were taken in the top 12 this year including such future busts as Jack LOcker, Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:03 PM
If they sign Braylon, I really like that offense.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:03 PM
TBL’s hatred of the Dolphins cracks me up.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:04 PM
As do I, but my question is this..how the hell are you going to throw on the Eagles?
August 1st, 2011 at 2:04 PM
i wouldn’t be surprised to see them beat the bengals…the bengals are hot garbage.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:06 PM
Nickel and dime them down the field. Especially if your linebackers need to cover a tight end. Or, they could just give Jackson the rock 25-30 times.
I’m not here to crap on the Eagles but y’all are one injury away at the QB and now DT position from having either a problem on offense or a problem stopping the run. The Eagles have one weakness. Depth.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:06 PM
Looks like the jury has submitted their verdict on The Cincy Ginger afterall…
August 1st, 2011 at 2:06 PM
well, you pump fake asante’s shoes off, like always. throw at DRC because he’s slightly more toastable. still stay away from nnamdi.
or you could just run the ball all day against them seeing as their front seven is pretty average…
August 1st, 2011 at 2:07 PM
uh, no.
FWIW he looked pretty good at the Jags practice yesterday.
they are going to be horrible.
does anyone besides extreme Titan honks think this?
August 1st, 2011 at 2:07 PM
Oh, my ballsy predictions that I would take to Vegas are…Lions winning 8 or more, Texans making the playoffs, and Dallas winning over 10.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:07 PM
I almost feel like the Skins are trying to tank this season away. Beck or Grossman. They have signed a few guys in Free Agency but no one on the offense who is going to be a difference maker. Their WR group is terrible. They traded for Tim Hightower? Signed a bunch of old WR’s.
They did slightly bolster their defensive line but their O-line is in shambles. I don’t think they have a starting RT yet. It just feels like they are tanking to draft a franchise QB and start trying to win again in 2012 0r 2013.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:07 PM
That might be right.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:07 PM
The Iggles also play two teams twice a year that have a pretty potent pass rush. Especially with Osi ending his holdout. That’s what’s nice about the NFL. Everybody has a weakness. It’s fun watching the coaches gameplan to exploit that weakness.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:07 PM
that’s Future Hall of Famer Jake Locker to you, bub.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:08 PM
that’s not an indictment on dalton yet. a shitty first year is not a death knell…then again, dalton isn’t exactly troy aikman.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:08 PM
I think it’s between Miami and Washington for Luck. Seattle is in a mediocre division where teams are happy to lose 1 for every 1 win. Buffalo and Oakland will likely reside in the middle-lower part of the AFC but have proven capable of stealing wins. So I think they’ll get enough wins to miss out on Top 3 picks.
But Miami is rebuilding and has no one that can carry the burden (Reggie, as much as I like him, isn’t that kind of RB). And Washington is rebuilding again.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:08 PM
Agreed on both what you and Spence said. I mean I’m a huge Eagles homer, but I don’t see how they stay healthy all year or stop the run.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:09 PM
Jaguars were 8~8 last year and are improved. Don’t believe they will be picking in the top 10 next year.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:09 PM
Do you actually believe in tanking? That teams will purposely lose to get a high draft pick and coveted player?
There is evidence of this in the NBA. In the NFL, crappy teams actually tend to have a slightly higher win percentage in the last 4 than previously. Maybe you can find one or two specific examples, but certainly not systematic tanking in the NFL. Runs against the ethos.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:10 PM
Anytime you need to feel better, just pull up the Bears depth chart and look at the offensive line. It’s made of wet toilet paper and silly string.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:10 PM
He reported to camp to avoid $30k/day fines. He received permission to talk to other teams for a trade.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:11 PM
I’ll give you three, two against the Bengals and one of four against the Steelers and Ravens.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:11 PM
The free agent signings are awesome, lots of help even beyond Nnamdi.
But so many wild cards still. New defensive coordinator (who was coaching the O-line). New O-line coach (one with a great reputation, mind you) and D-line coach (ditto).
It’s going to be interesting.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:11 PM
you forgot VY is there. he just wins games.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:12 PM
I really need to come up with a nickname for him…
August 1st, 2011 at 2:12 PM
that’s because he was practicing against the Jags.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:13 PM
Cowboys go 9-7, miss the playoffs.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:13 PM
Who’s the front office intern that has to tell Patrick Willis to take it easy out there today, because they want to get a higher draft pick? Do they pay his medical bills for the resultant injuries?
August 1st, 2011 at 2:13 PM
Not trying to argue that the Eagles are invulnerable by any means. But to your first point, AR has a pretty successful track record of guiding the Eagles with backup QBs for brief periods. And two, they just signed Cullen Jenkins, yeah?
August 1st, 2011 at 2:14 PM
you forgot VY is there. he just disappears for weekends into clubs to start fights and dance shirtless.
FYP
August 1st, 2011 at 2:14 PM
Ah. Well that makes sense. Giants still have a decent front 7 though.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:14 PM
I think this sums it up pretty well. They’ve actually made some moves to improve (at least on paper) in places, but are young. I don’t see them getting Luck but will still be up there.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:15 PM
Eagles will tank to create the ullllllltimate Super Team.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:15 PM
The Niners should really try and go after him, they need some DL help big time. But then that wouldn’t help their tanking options so they’ll probably avoid it.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:15 PM
A genetic mistake.

He’s ALWAYS hurt. That’s the injury I’m talking about.
I have more faith in Mike Quade leading the Cubs to a World Series than I do in Vince Young. Vick got his head right in clink for 2 years. VY doesn’t appear to have had that epiphany yet.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:16 PM
So how many games to the Chargers lose before they make their typical November surge only to miss the playoffs?
August 1st, 2011 at 2:16 PM
I really need to come up with a nickname for him…

God that show is a train wreck
August 1st, 2011 at 2:17 PM
Jason- There is a difference between a team that is rebuilding for the future and tanking but in some cases not much. A team like the Redskins looks to have a terrible offense this season and they have done not much of anything to address it. Can’t a “rebuild” be somewhat of a “tanking” job. Yes the players and coaches are going to compete every week but the front office has not given the team much to work with this year on the offensive side of the ball.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:17 PM
Raggedy Andy too generic?
August 1st, 2011 at 2:18 PM
Thank you Vince McMahon
August 1st, 2011 at 2:18 PM
If the Seahawks were really hoping to get a shitty QB to lead them to Luck, why would they give Tarvaris $4 million guaranteed? They can’t find a cheaper way to suck?
August 1st, 2011 at 2:18 PM
The Eagles are still a really good football team. On paper. And they will be appointment viewing for me just because of Michael Vick. I absolutely love watching him play.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:18 PM
what’s wrong with gingervitis?
August 1st, 2011 at 2:19 PM
How much longer until the Browns need to pay Joe Thomas, Spence? Two years?
August 1st, 2011 at 2:19 PM
No it’s not – Mike McQuery has that one locked up at PSU

/as per my friend this weekend

if they’re smart, they extend him now. he signed a 6 year deal in 2007 with a voidable final year.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:22 PM
No it’s not – Mike McQuery has that one locked up at PSU
Well, maybe Andy Dalton can pay him some of the money college players should already be getting to free up the nickname. A quick analysis of Penn State’s athletic budget tells me $350,000 per year would be fair
August 1st, 2011 at 2:24 PM
Do you really think a bunch of GMs are going to abandon a 1st round QB after one year? I don’t think career suicide is something GMs aspire to.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:25 PM
shit, if any QB deserved to be abandoned quickly, it’s sanchez.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:27 PM
Stark – McQuery isn’t a player. He’s the coach Paterno is always screaming at since he yell directly at his idiot son without a headset.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:28 PM
While Clausen wasn’t 1st round, he had the “pedigree” or whatever, and they still drafted Cam Newton. I wouldn’t be surprised to see something like that happen again.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:28 PM
Forgot the word can’t (can’t yell)
August 1st, 2011 at 2:29 PM
He’s the exorbitantly paid coach Paterno is always screaming at since he yell directly at his idiot son without a headset.
Hot Dog, please, there are narratives in here
August 1st, 2011 at 2:29 PM
Barkley has the best arm of QBs in this class. Wouldn’t mind landing him if Luck’s already off the board.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:30 PM
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Panthers draft another QB either.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:31 PM
what are people’s opinions of landry jones? if he has a monster year, he could find himself in the top 10.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:31 PM
Careful there, you’re going to be stirring the wrath of some people here.
/Fraudchez hasn’t proved shit
August 1st, 2011 at 2:31 PM
And yet you slobbered all over the Ponder pick for a couple weeks afterward. McNabb’s not a long term solution. A season, maybe season and a half is all.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:32 PM
I think he’s going to be off the charts good.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:33 PM
what are people’s opinions of landry jones?
I think he’s OK but I wonder how much of that is him and how much of that is because of Bradford looking so much better than I expected last year. If Landry Jones still had his molestache I would feel much more confident about his draft prospects
August 1st, 2011 at 2:33 PM
All of this.
How do teams game plan the Eagles defense going into the season? They aren’t going to be running the Jim Johnson defense anymore (which is kind of what Sean McDermott was running). Juan Castillo was coaching offensive line last year; who knows what the hell he’s going to roll out there, scheme-wise.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:34 PM
3-3-5, brand new defense, it’ll drive people nuts.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:34 PM
I hate people
August 1st, 2011 at 2:35 PM
Dolphins? They are not that bad. They have an OK D, QB, and decent RB’s, and WR. No way they even sniff the top 5 let alone top 10
August 1st, 2011 at 2:35 PM
I didn’t need to see that.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:36 PM
The Dolphins have an ok QB? What happened there?
August 1st, 2011 at 2:37 PM
They did, now they have Reggie Bush and I’m not sure who else
August 1st, 2011 at 2:37 PM
+1 case of Rock ponies at the Skeller that they don’t sell anymore
August 1st, 2011 at 2:37 PM
I can’t get past Landry Jones awful stache and how he played against Missouri last fall in evaluating him as a pro quarterback.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:37 PM
My QB’s playoff numbers are better than your QB’s numbers.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:38 PM
I’m somewhat inspired to now look back at the teams that finished with the worst record to see what they tended to look like. Carolina was 12-4 and 8-8 the previous two years. No one was talking about them back in the preseason as being the #1 overall.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:38 PM
Must we turn this into a dick measuring contest?
/high fives dewar
August 1st, 2011 at 2:39 PM
Your QB hasn’t won a playoff game at Lambeau against Favre. He’s also more likely to turn a broken play into an INT for 6 the other way than a 50+ yard TD run.
Mexigod has some developing to do. He’s got time to do it, but he needs to make it happen.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:39 PM
I’m almost certain Peter King had the Panthers going to the playoffs going into last year.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:40 PM
well no shit…look at his teammates. im sure if mark sanchez was throwing to mohammed massaquoi and brian robiskie, he’d be EVEN BETTER.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:40 PM
Hey, Lisk, unrelated to this conversation in any way and I could be attributing to the wrong person here, but I checked out Jonah Lehrer’s “How We Decide” on (I think) your recommendation and it’s a pretty good book. It stands out to me the few times he writes about sports that he probably shouldn’t write about sports. Your thoughts?
August 1st, 2011 at 2:40 PM
I’d be interested in that if you extrapolate it out to the top 3 teams in the draft, not just the worst team.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:40 PM
He has a terrible mustache and got engaged too soon.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:41 PM
Call me crazy, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Barkley makes a jump as the #1 QB prospect over the season.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:41 PM
I just find it funny that in a post that has nothing to do with Sanchez, he’s still brought up. And if you do, my figurative dick is bigger. Just go look at Vick versus Sanchez in the playoffs.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:41 PM
It just tends to happen anyway, can’t really avoid it.
/Looks up my QB’s playoff numbers
//smiles
August 1st, 2011 at 2:42 PM
He didn’t have the training wheels taken off for him at USC til his 4th year in that offense, so adjusting for inflation he’ll be an above average QB by 2016.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:43 PM
180 total yards of offense from him in that game…find a better example to use since they won thanks to 5 forced turnovers
August 1st, 2011 at 2:43 PM
No one was talking about them back in the preseason as being the #1 overall..
I don’t think that’s true, since they’d cut Delhomme and had nobody to play QB. They were starting the season with Matt Moore, so nobody thought they’d be good.
Although nobody thought they’d be last, because Tampa was going to be last in that Division, as they’d been 3-13 the year before.
But I don’t think people were exactly fired up about Carolina’s chances. Especially after losing Peppers, too.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:43 PM
I wasn’t even thinking of Colt, or (insert poor schmuck that has to play QB for the Browns here). Phillymantis and his puppy abusing QB were the asses I was trying to layeth the smacketh down on.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:43 PM
Rooting against both of these QBs is going to be so much fun this year
August 1st, 2011 at 2:44 PM
As a Rams fan, not being on this list is very exciting. I don’t care if it’s largely the result of residing in the league’s worst division, but getting into the playoffs this year can only help STL’s chances of keeping the Rams out of LA.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:44 PM
peter king did.

I’d almost bet my mortgage against this. I’m not here to argue that they are going to be any good…but I can’t fathom they don’t scrap together 5 or 6 wins…which won’t be good enough to get Luck.

You’re crazy. You might be right, though

Fun defined as “watch both of these teams win a lot of games”?
August 1st, 2011 at 2:46 PM
I just remember the Jets losing to the Superbowl champions 9-0 with Mexigod throwing up 2 INTs in that game. Vick almost lead the Eagles twice to beat them, but came up short both times.

peter king did.
Peter King, like every other guy who makes pre-season predictions, makes some silly ones so that if they come true, he’s the only one that got them right.
Everybody does it. Everybody picks something stupid like St Louis to win the west or some nonsense, and if it happens, they link you back to their post. If it doesn’t, you’re supposed to forget or remember that they got 9 out of 12 playoff teams right. Or 5, or whatever.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:47 PM
No. Fuck you internet for always taking a chance to shit on a two year QB who is making strides whenever you get the chance.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:48 PM
dirt…simpler answer is PK is a dumbass.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:49 PM
When it comes down to it, I’d rather have Vick quarterbacking my team than Sanchez.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:49 PM
Tensions are getting high and we’re all saying some things we don’t mean here. Everybody calm down. I’ll go first. Internet, I love you
August 1st, 2011 at 2:49 PM
simpler answer is PK is a dumbass.
but he must have a huge brain, based on how big his dome is.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:50 PM
It’s the nature of the beast here. We get the Mexigod jizzfest from the top and others and everyone retaliates.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:50 PM
Just leave Sanchez alone please. I can and will tell you that your QB is shitty when the chips are pushed in the middle.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:50 PM
He’s at a disadvantage though, as he won’t get a bowl game to inflate his worth.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:51 PM
Vick has over 300 rushing yards. Sanchez has 7 sacks for -34 yards rushing.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:51 PM
The NYC media and to a slightly lessor extent TBL did this. Not to mention that in the post he rips Chad Henne and the Dolphins when very recently there was a post comparing how similar the two are. Until he can admit that his QB is currently a liability not an asset then the mexigod will be attacked.
Liability is probably a little harsh. Keeping with the balance sheet theme lets call him dated inventory. Sure, he’s still an asset but you’re not really getting a lot for him.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:51 PM
I enjoy to rip on the mexican but I would certainly take him over the Asesino de Perros.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:52 PM
Fair enough I’ll lay off the Sanchize hate,…..but we will let the December 18th game between the Jets & Eagles in Philly be the determing factor. See you there.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:52 PM
So Sanchez, the not most amazing and gifted athlete ever to play QB, gets sacked just a little over once a playoff game. IN FUCKING SANE.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:53 PM
I would bet that Young is starting that game.

/nothing like a NY-Philly game the week before Christmas

Sanchez’s right knee would be totally fucked if that’s how he was tackled. Having 325+ pounds of force coming down with just that knee supporting Sanchez up would be painful.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:59 PM
but he must have a huge brain, based on how big his dome is.
The Neanderthals actually had a larger brain than homo sapiens but the frontal cortex was much smaller and, thus, they did not develop the reasoning abilities that we, their closest hominid cousins, can now take for granted.

August 1st, 2011 at 3:04 PM
As a Rams fan, not being on this list is very exciting. I don’t care if it’s largely the result of residing in the league’s worst division, but getting into the playoffs this year can only help STL’s chances of keeping the Rams out of LA.
Please make this happen, I don’t want this shit storm in L.A. again

August 1st, 2011 at 3:05 PM
I thought the NFL schedule makers worked things out each year so every team played a team coming off their bye only once? Eagles have two this year. That sucks.
August 1st, 2011 at 3:06 PM
Well the Eagles will be 13-0 by then right?
August 1st, 2011 at 3:06 PM

August 1st, 2011 at 3:07 PM
Eagles have two this year
Schedule makers had input from Adam Schefter’s tweets
August 1st, 2011 at 3:07 PM
Jay- This offense could be the worst in the league by a wide margin. Unless the defense creates tons of turnover and gives the offense a short field how are they going to score? They still don’t have a RT signed and aside from Trent Williams I don’t think they have a player on the offensive line who I see as above average.
August 1st, 2011 at 3:07 PM
Jets have a fairly easy schedule this year, so they could also be resting starters by week 15.
August 1st, 2011 at 3:08 PM
Man, I really fucking hate you. Just remind BB that he should save some of his blowout points for the playoffs this year.
August 1st, 2011 at 3:09 PM

August 1st, 2011 at 3:11 PM
It’s fun to project, but history tells us even elite teams rarely are resting starters that early. Neither the Eagles or Jets can be considered close at this point.

Closer than I thought’d it be. I’ll allow it. Although I’d imagine the last 10 years the Patriots have done a little better. I kind of forgot that before ’96, the Pats were just as awful as the Jets.
August 1st, 2011 at 3:24 PM
No way this ends badly, CJ
August 1st, 2011 at 3:24 PM
Here’s how I see it for the Jets…they can easily start the season 3-0…don’t see Dallas, Jags or Oakland being too difficult. Baltimore & NE away back to back will be tough so 3-2, Miami is a win and SD is a loss 4-3. After the bye they have Buffalo x2 & Pats at home, Denver away and Wash away, say 8-4. KC at home puts them at 9-4 leading up to Philly away.

Only one of those signings should be considered questionable. Sam Hurd is going to a special teams player. Roy Williams is going to be a malcontent asshole that finds strife with his QB all season long and drags this team down to a level of mutiny. He’s going to be like TO or Moss used to be, only he isn’t extremely talented.

I’ll defer to Jersey on this, but I just don’t see the Cowboys winning in the Meadowlands on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Just don’t see it at all.

No. He’s insinuating that no matter the time, no matter the date, no matter the place, whether it be 9/11, 311, or 7-11, the Jets are going whoop the Cowboys’ candy ass.

Mark Sanchez was in HS, Santonio was in Columbus (maybe) and Rex was getting his foot creamed on during 9/11. It’s not like the Jets were picking guys out of the rubble.

The stadium will be a little more exuberant than normal. Add that it’s a Sunday night and it’s the 1st game of the season. If Tony Romo hears himself think, it’ll be a surprise. If you believe in home field advantage, then there is truth to The Jets having a big one on 9/11.
August 1st, 2011 at 3:37 PM
Ryan vs Ryan brother is going to be fairly fascinating.
August 1st, 2011 at 3:37 PM
I’m not so sure why people are down on the Cowboys to begin with. It’s not like Jerrah dropped a bunch of money on a high prized free agent. He was prudent in his spending and brought back what was necessary for the team. Plus, Romo comes back. The Cowboys have an outside shot at the playoffs this year.
August 1st, 2011 at 3:38 PM

They still have Tnew and Jenkins. Not great by an means but decent enough (needs safeties). I am more interested in a better pass rush than CB play.
August 1st, 2011 at 3:42 PM
How much better did the line that got Romo killed get last year? And they’re defense is still kind of overrated. I was on record sayiong I didn’t like their team last year before the season started. I still feel this way.
August 1st, 2011 at 3:43 PM
Ware and Spencer aren’t good enough for you?
August 1st, 2011 at 3:43 PM
oh, you’ll get a pass rush. rob ryan blitzed 6+ the most of any DC in the NFL last year.
August 1st, 2011 at 3:45 PM
Doug Free and Kosier are back. Gurode still there and he’s not good. There’s also a different coach there now that will probably be protecting Romo just a bit more seeing as how his job depends on it.
Their defense still has a good pass rush. A good pass rush forces QBs (especially ones that have shown a proclivity for throwing picks when under pressure) into mistakes. Even crappy DBs can catch balls thrown right at them.
August 1st, 2011 at 3:45 PM
Plenty good. Just need to be utilized better. Ryan should do that.
August 1st, 2011 at 4:22 PM
It’s easy to overlook Rams fans in such a baseball crazy town, but I think St. Louis is an underrated NFL town that has been screwed over by one owner (Bidwell) and is fearful of a second screwing (Kroenke). Sure, the fan base grew numb over the past few years during a historically awful stretch, but I don’t think it would have been different for any other fan base. We’ve basically been looking for an excuse to be optimistic and Bradford has done the trick.
August 2nd, 2011 at 6:08 PM
Skins all the way. They are gonna suck eggs. Shanahan will want Luck and call him the second coming of John Elway so he’ll convince Danny Boy (after he gets tired of suing the City Paper) to trade away everything they have to get Luck.
