Erick Aybar Tried To Bunt During Justin Verlander’s No-Hit Attempt, Breaking an Unwritten Rule
We almost had our second no hitter of the week, as Justin Verlander, who seemingly has a no-hitter through five innings every start, was in the 8th inning with a no-no going. The battle between the two aces in the American League, Verlander vs. Jared Weaver, already featured some fireworks as Weaver was ejected the previous inning for air mailing one over Alex Avila’s head right after Carlos Guillen hit a home run and admired it a little too much.
That chippiness carried over to Verlander’s attempt in the 8th. With the Angels trailing 3-0, Erick Aybar laid down a bunt to try to get on, Verlander fielded it, and fired a wild throw to first, allowing Aybar to advance. It was ruled an error, so the no-hitter was still intact at that point, but Verlander was not happy, exchanging words with Aybar. Aybar eventually scored on a botched run down, and then the no-hitter was broken up with a two-out single to left by Maicer Izturis.
After the inning, Verlander was still pissed off by Aybar’s violation of that dreaded unwritten rule that you don’t bunt to break up a no-hitter. He was seen yelling at Aybar and motioning that he would plunk him in the side.
I love the fire that Verlander has there. I mean, dude’s a competitor and he’s pissed that he lost a no-hitter. He was in the heat of the moment. However, I’m tired of these stupid unwritten rules.
The #1 rule is winning. The Angels were 2 back of the Rangers in the AL West and 5.5 of the Yankees for the AL Wildcard. Detroit’s barely leading the AL Central as well. Verlander is the type of pitcher that you have to scratch and claw against most outings, not just this one. The score was 3-0. If Aybar’s bunt is the best way to get something going, do it. It worked. He forced a throw and got a 2 run inning going that almost got the Angels to extras with Verlander out. If Verlander had given up a duck snort in the second, then Aybar’s bunt attempt would have been the sign of a competitor trying to stay alive, and would have not violated any rule. This isn’t mocking a pitcher after hitting a home run, something that doesn’t affect the game within the lines. I don’t see how any behavior that is an attempt to legitimately win a game within the rules should violate any unwritten rules.

Fucking preach, I also like when managers bitch if their opponent steals a base when up 5 runs or something as if baseball comebacks don’t exist (looking at you Mike Quaded)
Ha, first guy I thought of too and that game was just 2-0 at the time

Lisk did you hold the same opinion when A-rod rounded the bases and tried to distract the SS on a popup? Really no different than what fans and guys from the bench do so I’d say it’s a “legitimate attempt” within the rules.
There are unwritten rules in every sport. A few are good, most are worthless. This is one of the few good ones imo.

Not bunting in a no-hitter is a good one, or the A-Rod one you mentioned?

Please explain, bunts for hits happen all the time in baseball, why should the inning in which it happens matter? The Angels were trying to win a game, the rules don’t change just because the other team has a pitcher who hasn’t surrendered a hit
July 31st, 2011 at 5:56 PM
Yeah I mucked that up.
I hated the fact Aybar tried to bunt to break up the no hitter. What A-Rod did I really don’t have an opinion one way or the other. Just was wondering if you consider those situations the same.

This. Reason I laugh every time I hear about Sox/Pats running up the score. Until you sign a piece of paper saying you promise not to come back, the team should be trying to put more runs up.
If it was a 10-0 game and he bunted, that’s a little shadier. If the game matters at all, then it’s pretty much do whatever you can… except for something like ARod distracting the fielder. That shit gets you plunked.

Why do the White Sox sit in the 3rd base dugout? They had the sun on them the whole game and the Red Sox had shade.
July 31st, 2011 at 6:02 PM
Taken in the context of what Verlander was on the verge of accomplishing it does matter. Only 200 some odd no hitters in history, break it up like Macier did.
July 31st, 2011 at 6:02 PM
I’d link to a Herm Edwards clip, if I didn’t think it would hurt Lisk’s feelings so much.
July 31st, 2011 at 6:04 PM
You know I never really noticed but that’s the way it’s been for as long as I can remember so there must be a decent reason one would hope
The A-Rod thing is akin to stealing signs, not against the rules but it just seems sleazy…bunting for a single when still in a game is just smart baseball, to argue otherwise is silly
July 31st, 2011 at 6:05 PM
I’d rather the Red Sox win a single game, than any opposing player in the league accomplish any milestone. Who would actually want their team to get no-hit???
July 31st, 2011 at 6:07 PM
What does it matter to the Angels what the other pitcher is doing, they’re trying to win a damn baseball game…and it should be pointed out that the move nearly worked in leading the Angels back

How does the unwritten rule go? What inning are you supposed to lie down for the no-no?
July 31st, 2011 at 6:10 PM
What A-Rod did was akin to stealing signs only sleazier since that’s not part of playing baseball…bunting for singles happens all the time and is the reason Juan Pierre’s stuck around for as long as he has, why should a hitter remove a part of his game just to benefit some “unwritten rule”
Ha, now this is a great question…can you only bunt for your first hit the first time through the lineup?
July 31st, 2011 at 6:11 PM
Apparently somewhere between the 2nd and 8th innings, according to Verlander.
/needs more unwritten punishments
July 31st, 2011 at 6:15 PM
Don’t get me wrong… it’d piss me off as a pitcher, but I don’t see how anyone can really call it a crap move in a 3-0 game.
It’s easier in football, to me you don’t let off the gas till the other team starts pulling starters, and basically is conceding you the win. You don’t want to see your team immortalized on the wrong end of the ‘great comebacks’ highlight films.
July 31st, 2011 at 6:21 PM
You play to win the game. Not to give Justin Verlander a no-hitter.
July 31st, 2011 at 6:25 PM
Ha. I’ll concede the point. I wanted the no no for fantasy purposes and they’re cool to see. Essentially the worst fan ever.
July 31st, 2011 at 6:38 PM
am i the only only that thinks Verlander looks like a punk here? i mean, if you’re so heated, why wait until you’re in the dugout to start with the tough guy antics?
July 31st, 2011 at 6:51 PM
He’s just pissed that he’s no longer the best pitcher in the division. Can’t wait till his arm falls off.
July 31st, 2011 at 7:02 PM
What Carlos Guillen was more atrocious. He stared down Weaver and just basically taunted him. It was fucking ridiculous. I am not sold on the bunt idea but it served its purpose, pissing Verlander off, the most dominant pitcher in the game. Verlander should have been upset that they looked like a little leauge team on the run down. Don’t make threats, just drill the guy next time you face him. Its a 3-0 game, not 5-0 or more where a grand slam can tie it. Fucking morons, Guillen especially. Weaver should have broke someone’s rib cage there.
July 31st, 2011 at 7:03 PM
eh, try to win the game. fuck that pitcher and his stupid ass no hitter and the fucking rules. do what you can to get something started

hell yeah
July 31st, 2011 at 7:21 PM
Just once I’d love to see one of those pitchers get their ass kicked by a hitter. Staring him down? what a bitch. He’s trying to get on base in a close game, the batter should do whatever it takes to win or get on base.
July 31st, 2011 at 7:23 PM
Verlander’s a pussy. I’ve lost some respect for him.
July 31st, 2011 at 7:25 PM
it was 3-0 when this went down?
Verlander can eff himself
July 31st, 2011 at 7:31 PM
Question: When Aybar comes to the plate at any time, does the third baseman often play in? I dont see enough Angels games to notice. He steals 20 bags a year, so I would guess yes. And if so, where they playing in on this play in the 8th?
July 31st, 2011 at 7:35 PM
It’s ok Verlander. Enjoy it while it lasts since your team will lose to the Red Sox fairly easily in the first round of the playoffs
July 31st, 2011 at 8:53 PM
Isn’t it also an unwritten rule that team success comes before individual success? At least that’s what they all claim in the postgame interview.

there’s nothing wrong with unwritten rules. It’s players continuing a standard on how the game is supposed to be played.
July 31st, 2011 at 10:31 PM
That “standard” is stupid
July 31st, 2011 at 10:52 PM
Bean his as the next time he’s at bat.
July 31st, 2011 at 10:54 PM
Yeah, like the unwritten rule some NBA teams had in the 50′s & 60′s that only allowed for 1 or 2 black guys on the team at a time. That rule needs to make a comeback.

Obviously didn’t watch the game, dumbass. Guillen was chirping back because Joe Dirt Weaver decided to yell at Ordonez the inning before because he thought Magglio was hotdogging on his 2 run shot. Apparently in Weaver’s rodent skull, he considers staring at a shot down the line for 2 seconds to see if it stays fair as ‘showing him up’. So if anything, Guillen was just getting under his skin more by saying “You thought Maggs showed you up? Here, lemme show you how it’s done.”

Fuck you Verlander. If it was so easy to bunt for a hit to break up a no-hitter, it’d be easy to bunt for a hit when there isn’t a no-hitter going and everybody would be hitting .333.
August 1st, 2011 at 10:25 AM
Jim Leyland said it best, “It was a beautiful play. I’ll be in the minority with the people that didn’t like that. They’ve got a good team with a lot of speed and they’re trying to win a pennant just like we are. I don’t have any problem with that play whatsoever. He’s trying to get on base and as it turned out, it was a big play for them because that was one that got it going for them.”
August 1st, 2011 at 11:42 AM
Don’t understand these stupid unspoken rules in baseball. A hitter should be able to admire a 450 foot bomb. It is akin to a corner getting pissed when a WR celebrates a long TD or a guard getting angry at a DT for celebrating a sack. Baseball and it’s rules and old-fart traditions is losing steam to other sports. Why can’t there be replay? Why allow a fat jackass to call balls and strikes with random strike zones that vary from ump to ump and inning to inning? I love the game, but it pisses me off.
