For Vince Young, a Chance to Start Over in Philadelphia
Vince Young is going to sign a 1-year deal in Philadelphia after being released by the Titans. He wasn’t going to get within smelling distance of competing for a starting job by week 1 with any organization, not after the way things went down in Tennessee at the end, when he walked out of a locker room on his head coach.
For Philadelphia, this seems like an excellent move. Sure, nothing may come of it, he may just serve his time on a bench, and move on. The cost is low enough that if Vince Young bounces back, they get a tremendous bargain.
For me, though, this Vince Young signing is a view into sports, and why we like it–that absolute uncertainty that has the potential to spawn great moments, but not always, and never guaranteed. It’s not a movie, where we can sometimes feel like we’ve seen the same script and storyline many times over. It’s not “reality” television, where we know the formulaic mixture of attention mongers that will fill our screen.
Which way will Vince Young go? I don’t know, and it’s on him to decide and change. Maybe this fall from starter to someone that few want, who nobody wants to start, and who can only merit a 1-year deal, will jolt him into making some changes to his attitude. Maybe he can’t do that at this point. We would have thought that might have been the case after what happened back in the 2008 season. He had to work his way back, and wait, until an 0-6 start in 2009 gave him another opportunity. It didn’t take.
There is this. When he played, he was more productive after returning, even though he still had the issues with Fisher and the organization.
Vince Young, 2006 through 1st game of 2008 before injury and losing job to Collins: 57.3% completions, 6.41 yards per attempt, 22 TD to 32 INT, 6.4% sack rate
Vince Young, since regaining job in 2009 until incident last year following thumb injury: 59.0% completions, 7.55 yards per attempt, 20 TD to 10 INT, 5.0% sack rate
So while the perception of Young has gone in the tank, after being overly praised as a winner and getting on a Madden cover in his first two seasons, he has flashed enough to say that he is far from a lost cause if he can get his head together with a new organization. He’s had his up and downs (that Pittsburgh game last year was brutal) but watch his comeback against Arizona and say this guy doesn’t have a future in this league, if the organ inside his helmet is ready.
The immediate comparisons are going to be to Michael Vick, Philadelphia’s most recent reclamation. The quarterback position is littered, though, with guys who came back after being unwanted, and also with just as many who never came back. The Elways and Mannings are the exception at the position. Rich Gannon was completely out of football when he signed on as a backup in Kansas City. Doug Williams had gone to the USFL and latched back on in Washington, throwing exactly one pass in 1986. Randall Cunningham was an afterthought in Minnesota by 1998, after injuries had racked his Eagles’ career.
I don’t know if Vince Young will turn it around, but nothing would surprise me.

Considering the way that Reid has turned QBs around , I think this is a smart buy-low move. He may get a few starts as well with Vick’s health issues.

I think this is a good move, but a risky one. Vick could easily take a step back and Young as described above has some issues. If Vick goes down and Young steps in and plays great the Eagles will be looked at as geniuses. If he flops? Well Reid gets fired. So win win?

Not to dispute the notion that he played better, but two words: Nate Washington. Young throws a decent deep ball with pretty good touch, but in Philly his accuracy issues could be exposed when he’s not throwing up nines to Desean Jackson.

Mike Lombardi going to town on Young on NFL Network was great. “He hasn’t done anything to be known just by his initials.”

Well, he did marry a Patriots fan. That fair weather stuff is bound to rub off on a guy after a while you know.

July 29th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
I think it depends on who he’s talking about. If he’s talking about either the Raiders or the Patriots, just immediately disregard anything he’s saying. If it involves the other 30 teams and it’s actual analysis instead of trying to break news, it’s usually pretty good, IMO.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
Wow. 26 comments and not one of them was Clown sucking VY’s dong. That’s shocking.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
I don’t know if anyone remembers or if it’s anywhere on youtube, but one of my favorite sports memories is watching Randall play some game. They are absolutely rolling some team, per usual. He’s at the line, making a change or something, and he’s like smiling the entire time. Almost like he was happy to be throwing td passes again on such an awesome team. Just went threw my head as I was reading that.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
All of this. He has the mental strength of an infant.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
Spence, you ready for Tiger to go scorched Earth motherfuckers the next few months?
July 29th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
Wow, John Elway only had TWO seasons in his entire career where he threw more than 320 passes. That’s amazing. I still think arguing him as the best quarterback of all time is ridiculous, but it’s no wonder why his volume stats look so bad. Of course, if he wasn’t taking 35 to 40 sacks a year his attempts would probably be at least a smidge higher.

July 29th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
I do know that Chris Johnson is holding out this year because he’s making $800k from his rookie deal.
As for Vince, I can not boo him. I’m glad Reid didn’t listen to the Fisher/Mort propaganda.

Vick actually got asked about Young getting booed today at camp. He was diplomatic: “We all don’t like to be booed.”
Young started like half their games last year, right? And had an 8.0 YPA? That’s uh, sorta good.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
Not before hitting up the five strip clubs within 10 minutes of the Linc.
You forgot the part where he attacks the talent. I’ll enjoy watching him pout, as I think VY has very few redeeming qualities as a human being.

July 29th, 2011 at 10:28 AM

July 29th, 2011 at 10:28 AM

July 29th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Is Kafka still on the team? He’ll probably be the number 2. But Vick was also the number 3 in 2009, and, well, we saw how that turned out.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Don’t doubt it…but if I see him roll into one of said clubs after a game, I hope he buys some patron and comes in shirtless. Just for the hilarity of it.

i have a personal vendetta against lombardi…
a) he headed the browns personnel dept for almost a decade and was responosible for signings like andre rison and draft picks like tommy vardell and got rid of bernie kosar.
b) he has a personal beef with the browns and goes out of his way to slam them whenever convenient…beef with mangini, colt mccoy, joe haden, mike holmgren (which seems ridiculous considering they worked together w walsh’s 49ers)
c) his analysis is entirely steered by agents and handlers and is manipulated so he doesn’t burn a bridge that isn’t already burnt because he’d rather work in a front office than on nfl network
fuck him.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
I swear I read just yesterday where his swing coach said he hadn’t even started swinging yet. maybe that was an old article, but I didn’t think so. I guess it makes sense to come back on a course that he can probably go and play in his sleep, just seems weird if the whole swing thing is true.

July 29th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
if he’s coming back this soon, he’s pissed and motivated. this could either be a quick return and back to the DL or said scorched earth.
either way, im excited.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
When does Madden come out? I fear people will use the Eagles too much and I will have to figure out how to stop running quarterbacks again.

July 29th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
bad move. eagles need a decent backup, and VY is not a decent backup. He simply is not good, and has the feelings of a 5 year old. philly fans will be way more brutal than titans fans.
i am not sure if it has happened yet, but the world needs to fully realize that vince young is just not a good player.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
I know you meant completed, bsanders… Elway was a streaky QB until he got older. He was just plain bad in some games, but people loved him because he could throw the ball thru a brick wall regardless of whether it was 20 feet away from where it was supposed to go.
He became a much better QB when he got older and tried to do less with his physical ability.

Except he hasn’t for more than 4 years now and has made zero intention of going anywhere. Spence being petty? Nah…
July 29th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
He doesn’t suck, he’s just so inconsistent. I know this is a black/white comparison, but as an NFL QB he’s pretty comparable to Sage Rosenfels. Mobile in the pocket, but not as athletic as you might think. Good touch on the deep ball, but will make some mystifyingly inaccurate shorter throws. I can’t tell you how many short outs just past the sticks he either put at a receivers feet or over their head when they were playing the Colts.

I kinda hate that play because hard-hitting analyzers say that’s the only reason the Colts won that game, forgetting that the Texans defense gave up three TD drives in about five minutes. Context. Much preferable to ZOMG SAGE FAIL!

July 29th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
yeah, but Texans defense fail happens about 16 times a year,
Our run defense was actually fine last year. It was the pass defense that was horrible. After the Ryans injury we lost one of our best coverage LBs for the season, Jackson was a rookie and Quinn was cursed with bad luck. It was a perfect storm of suck.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Kick returner, better safety than corner, can play center field. Gets burned on hitch and go routes as a corner… a lot. Manning in a nutshell.
Better at playing zone than man, too.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
you call it the Jeff George, I call it the T-Jack, but we both are talking about the same thing.

I remember T-Jack more for throwing it 104 MPH directly at a defender.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
He’s a really good kick returner though. He spelled Hester on kickoffs, not punts. He tends to not know when to wave the flag and call for a fair catch on punts. But on kickoffs, dude can find a lane and once he gets a seam, look out.

July 29th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
I heard a guy on the radio yesterday saying the only real update to this years Madden was the rosters, and that NCAA blew it out of the water this year. apparently Madden lost one of it’s top developers this past year.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
Totally different players. Manning is a centerfielder, plain and simple. Can get to everything, but doesn’t want to touch anybody. Pollard can’t get to anything and wants to destroy you and eat your soul. And then hit you again.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
I’ve heard they improved some of the gameplay but really if anything changes in a Madden game the developers are Saints for doing so because they could put out a new game with just roster updates every year and probably still get my 60 dollars.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
I am enjoying NCAA 12 for sure, but that game has it’s own set of issues as well. Lots of folks having freezing problems, player tendencies changing when using a named/edited roster, etc. It’s a fun game (I love the new coaching carousel), but not without flaws.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:51 AM

My guess would be no, but I have not heard anything specific. I also thought that Joseph would wait until Asomugha signed, but I guess the Texans bailed on Asomugha as the price was getting too high and Joseph was all but ready to take a contract.
July 29th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
i’ve created perfect offensive lineman with 99 everything and they still get beaten by DE’s with 75 ovr rating.

I still play my copy of Madden 09 with Favre on the cover. I see no reason to buy another version. Hell, I still play MLB 08 The Show, NCAA 06 (which is a PS2 disc) and NHL 09. I see no reason to buy a new game.
I play for the dynasty mode and once you get a few seasons in the rosters don’t matter anyways.

July 29th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
I still have my copy of Madden ’94 which I occasionally dust off so I can take the Oilers to another undefeated season and the Super Bowl.
July 29th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
Can’t say I’m excited about Joseph and Manning being that I’ve never heard of them. Thats probably more my fault. But anyone is an improvement over the shit we had last season.

July 29th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
With the scheme Wade is implementing, Pollard doesn’t fit. You need guys who can cover without somebody looking over their shoulder. Joseph and Manning can definitely do that.

Texans – Spence is right. I was dealing with Neil O’Donnell, shit drafts, Glenn Foley supposedly being the saving grace of the franchise and a bunch of other shit. You just gotta stick with it.

browns crap is my therapy. it makes me realize that you can’t take happiness for granted. you stick through the bad because you’ll appreciate the good that much more.I hear ya.

Of course now my team looks good but is lead by a QB who, while showing some flashes of good, you sometimes believe would fuck up a paint-by-numbers kindergarden project.

Go easy on Milky Way Face, he’s a born leader.

Just to clarify, I mean that he has a cluster of moles that resemble a constellation, not that Mark Sanchez is walking around East Rutherford in black face. Though, if he were…

I’m looking forward to the presumed hilarity of Mario Williams stumbling around in space without his hand on the ground.
it’s a short learning curve this camp too. They’ll probably flip flop him away from a tight end all season.

please, that’s not fiction…dude pures it. and i actually think the time off helped him more than practice…he wasn’t getting in his own head because he didn’t have any expectations.

speaking of, is Kemoatu still on the roster? I know he’s not a fan favorite in Pittsburgh.
July 29th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
I like Kemoatu and hes still there, dude is great at pulling but poor at the point of attack. And he had a really, really bad super bowl.
