Haynesworth to the Patriots: No More Laying Around For Albert
I was just thinking last night that the Patriots had been pretty quiet this offseason. Belichick is always willing to take a chance on a player at the right price. We’ve seen it with Randy Moss and Corey Dillon, and we saw them surprise with the selection of Ryan Mallett when he slipped out of the top two rounds with character concerns. The price for a star defensive lineman with a poor attitude of a 5th round pick and reasonable base salary for the next two years was enough to offset the risk.
For Washington, the Haynesworth era was a complete disaster. I mean, when you’re with a team for two years and have a Top Ten Worst Moments list (they are all legitimately funny), you were doing some work. Actually, “doing some work” isn’t the right collection of words for what that blob did in Washington. At least Redskins fans shouldn’t complain about the team never having draft picks anymore, as the philosophy now has shifted to signing bad contracts and then flipping them at the nadir of their value for future late picks. However, it had to be done – not doing this trade would have just been avoiding sunk costs, and they did save a cap hit.
In New England, Haynesworth will be going to the type of defense that he professed to hate, the 3-4, though when he actually tried in Washington on those rare occasions, he did fine. The Patriots will use him in four man fronts in passing situations, and they play with the lead enough that he should get opportunities in both. Still, he’s going to have to toe the 3-4 line in New England.
I suspect that New England gets one good year out of Albert, but the guy just seems like an odd dude and I’m not sure he can avoid being a problem for more than that. I am guessing he won’t just be laying around for long in New England.

How many times has this sentence been said while Dan Snyder’s owned the team?

How many coaches and free agent signings have they had since he bought the team? Throw in the drafting of Jason Campbell and you have your number.

I think that this is the first time I have ever looked at the Skins off season moves and thought they were doing a decent job.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
What did the Redskins get in return from the Pats?

Several but in about 40 years we will be able to wrap a nice bow around it and put Dan Snyders name in that sentence.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
LOL, it’s been 2 days.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
I believe a 5th round pick in 2013
July 28th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
LOL, it’s been 2 days.
I know. I meant more in the “Patriots are being patient and not getting involved in this feeding frenzy” way, and not in the “’bout damn time they do some thing” way.
I was contemplating a post on teams that were being patient while others threw money around. Of course, this wasn’t throwing money around on a new contract either.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
So, does this mean that there’s hope for my Bears?
July 28th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
For example, Seattle & Carolina
July 28th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
Yeah man. Brad Smith willr eturn you to glory.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:47 AM

Well Albert will have no problems finding women up in Boston since we all know he doesn’t even date black women.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Still, he’s going to have to toe the 3-4 line in New England.
Not really, if it works out. He can play in some of their 2 man only pass rush fronts, and 4 man fronts. It’s not like they really need him to be the guy playing 2 gaps and trying to hold up blockers, since they have the league’s premier blocker holder upper in Wilfork, and Brace behind him to do that dirty work. And the bigger Warren.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:48 AM

July 28th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
Wow. I guess that’s all you have to give up for an albatross of a contract?
it’s not even a bad contract now. Snyder paid all of the bad contract part already (except for the imaginary part at the end).
July 28th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
Does anyone else remember, back when Haynesworth was about to sign with the Redskins, and a lot of writers were saying how risky it would be to sign a guy who is only motivated by money and that he’ll stop playing hard when he gets paid . . . and Duffy wrote a post saying how that argument was inherently racist since Haynesworth is black and nobody ever wrote that about a white player?
It must have been expunged off the entire internet because not even Google can seem to find it.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
richard seymour and ty warren are both big DE’s that are asked to do more than just eat up blocks…haynesworth fits fine as a DE and he’ll get to do what he did in tennessee.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
Am I crazy for thinking Warren profiles as a better 4-3 tackle, than 3-4 end?
I’m really hoping that a couple of the young ends/OLBs pan out. There are 3-4 who have been injured or seen little playing time, who could be important on this years defense.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
The GIF of that play is pretty fantastic as well.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
kinda, because he’s fantastic when healthy.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
That video slays me every time. Nicely done, Lisk.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
not haynesworth, but i like the one of the FSU lineman who stayed in his stance for an entire play.

July 28th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Am I crazy for thinking Warren profiles as a better 4-3 tackle, than 3-4 end?
yeah, I think they’re switching close to full time. They employ a lot of enormous guys, though, too many to rotate into just 2 spots. So they’ll be playing 3 of these guys at once, a lot.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
The big question is what kind of shape Albert shows up to New England in. If he is completely overweight and has not worked out the whole offseason than it is going to take him a ton of time to become productive.
If Albert can get in decent shape the Patriots are going to be terrifying with Wilfork and Hayneworth blowing up the interior offensive line of every team they face.
As a skins fan I almost hope that Haynesworth comes in and instantly succeeds. The local DC media has made it out like the Skins were not complicit in the problems that Hayneswoth had as a Redskin. The real problem is how poorly the organization is managed.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
me neither
July 28th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
Could conceivably see a 3-4 base with basically three tackles (Warren/Hayneswoth/Wilfork). May be the first Pats team that can stop the run.
Spencer I said that wrong… Warren plays tackle in the 4-3 a lot, and 3-4 end… but if Wilfork and Haynesworth were both on the interior, I don’t think he’d fit nearly as well as an end in a 4-3 defense.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Does anyone else remember, back when Haynesworth was about to sign with the Redskins, and a lot of writers were saying how risky it would be to sign a guy who is only motivated by money and that he’ll stop playing hard when he gets paid . . . and Duffy wrote a post saying how that argument was inherently racist since Haynesworth is black and nobody ever wrote that about a white player?
It must have been expunged off the entire internet because not even Google can seem to find it.
I remember being a racist in the comments. But not necessarily in that post.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
probably not…but wilfork isn’t a pass rusher so in those 4 man fronts they could have haynesworth and warren in the middle and give wilfork a breather. you can never have enough talented size on the DL…keep em fresh. rotate. get creative. hoodie knows what’s up.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
Wait, the Bears are considering trading Greg Olsen? The fuck?
July 28th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
What? Really? Why?
July 28th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
spencer – explanation for FSU O-lineman. I don’t understand why they coach this…it’s either offsides or it’s not. the o-line not moving for the entire play does nothing in my opinion.

July 28th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
The Patriots should be able to get 1 good year out of Albert since they know how to get everyone to buy into their way at least for the first year.
No guarantees beyond that.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
because he has the stats of a blocking TE without all that pesky blocking?
July 28th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
Dirt continues his streak of beating me to every comment.
Guys like Brace/Pryor/Deaderick might have a couple roster casualties among them. I love the fact that for the first time in year the Patriots have defensive line depth. I just wish they had more of it on the outside, and had a chance to get more sacks. For as good as they have been the last 5 years… they have not had great defensive lines or much ability to collapse a pocket.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
So he will only be available until week 6 because he is going to get all stompy on Gurode again.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
Rosenhaus is fucking with us:
Then:
He’s a shark. Very good at his job, but a shark.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
you’re coached not to react if a DL jumps offsides, but not moving when the play is going on is pure down’s on the part of the lineman.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
Wait, the Bears are considering trading Greg Olsen? The fuck?
I think it’s coming from Olsen’s camp (read: Drew Rosenhaus). His last year of this contract, and there was something about Rosenhaus sending an email out to execs last night, then retracting it. Check @skjensen timeline.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
Not his fault Martz doesn’t know how to use a TE in the passing game. Let’s not even get started on Ron Turner, either.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
Wait, the Bears are considering trading Greg Olsen? The fuck?
What? Really? Why?
because 5th round draft choices don’t just get awarded to you. You have to give up starting tight ends to get them.
I can’t imagine getting much for the guy honestly. He’s for sure more valuable to Chicago than anybody else, since their backup tight end is Brandon Manumaleuma, right? Or am I confused again?
July 28th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
One would think the Fat Manyesworth would try to get in shape and have a Pro Bowl year so he can make the Skins look like jackasses (though I think everyone already knows they are). However, i’m not sure he’s smart enough to do that so we’ll see what the Pats actually got.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
so then why are you all pissy about trading him? bears can get robert royal as his 6th OL and trade olsen for a WR or some shit that martz knows how to use.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
That Haynesworth video was not quite as embarrassing is I remembered it. But it’s still funny to see the lineman opposite him actively block him and then realize that Haynesworth has fallen on his face. His body language is fantastic.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Always funny when it’s everyone else’s fault…he isn’t even as good as Bubba Franks was and all that guy could do was catch 1-yard TD passes
July 28th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
nice job keeping his head on a swivel and picking up 99 at the end there.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
But Martz does know how to use him. He’s the reason Cutler got less killed as the season went on. Just silly.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
The Cardinals could certainly use a tight end. They have not had one since Jay Novacek. Especially with a young qb at the helm. But they will probably go for Heap.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
That’s why I don’t want to trade him. Just because he’s listed as a tight end, doesn’t mean Martz can line him up in the slot or use him in the redzone. Or just do more of this.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
That Haynesworth video was not quite as embarrassing is I remembered it.
what happened in the one in your memory? Did a bunch of food fall out of his jersey when he fell, and he just laid there eating it?
Because that’s pretty embarrasing. That’s in an actual regular season game.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
Whether or not the Bears trade Greg “butter hands” Olsen is the least of my worries.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
There’s not even enough game tape for you to base this on. How can you judge the guy’s play when he’s not even getting targeted?
July 28th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
The Cardinals could certainly use a tight end. They have not had one since Jay Novacek.
they put him in the garbage, too. I liked plan B. NFL dumpster diving.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
a) i think it’s funny googling jay cutler and getting mr. olympia next to emo chubster.
b) i think what got cutler less killed as the season went on was the fact that he threw more than 30 passes once in the last 7 games as opposed to five in the first 9 games…like 10 fewer passes per game. 10 fewer chances to beat those horrible, horrible linemen “protecting” him
July 28th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
what happened in the one in your memory? Did a bunch of food fall out of his jersey when he fell, and he just laid there eating it?

I’m not sure exactly. It’s still funny and embarrassing, but perhaps it’s the law of diminishing returns. I’ve seen it so many times now that I don’t laugh as much as I used to.

@ MS- have you heard anything about the texans? Chronicle isnt reporting anything, which is surprising considering how plugged in zierlein is.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
What? 4 fumbles in 4 seasons. 6 drops.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
I assume he’s not getting open because if the quarterback is still targeting the slop they have at WR when he’s on the field seems like more of an Olsen problem
July 28th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Larry Fitzgerald for Greg Olsen straight up!!
July 28th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
Lisk – What do you think of your Chiefs signing Breaston? I’m a little surprised Breaston wanted to play for Hayley again.

@ MS- have you heard anything about the texans? Chronicle isnt reporting anything, which is surprising considering how plugged in zierlein is.
Latest I saw was from Kuharsky who said that despite reports, they are still very much in the mix for Asomugha. And that they are also now courting Johnathan Joseph as a plan B.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
You could include the diabetic and I still don’t think they would bite.

you have to be in max protect when you’re running legends like Arumosho in tangle routes 20 yards down the field. It’s going to take Johnny Knox a while to get open. Like till the game ends.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
Yep, just looked up his numbers. Actually got used less as the season went on.

How pray tell would that make the Skins look like jackasses? If anything, it would just prove what a jackass Haynesworth is, not the other way around.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
Sucks to see Cullen Jenkins leave but I can only assume Washington paid more than a 30-year-old DE who struggles to stay on the field should be paid

this had me rolling.

I like it. The money’s good, so if he starts opposite Bowe this year, and then as the 3rd WR after that if Baldwin moves in, it’s still good. He’s got a chance to be a WR2 in this league, and we didn’t even have a WR5 last year.

What was decided with the first round rookie salaries? Are they actually going down in per-year value or just length? I feel dumb for not knowing this as it seemed to be a big issue in labor negotiations, but I can’t find it anywhere.
