Dispatch From the MLS All-Star Press Conference
MLS was kind enough to credential me for the All-Stars’ match against Manchester United. Yesterday, I made one of my infrequent forays into the world of formulaic quote-mining at the press conference. Here are a few thoughts.
Newsworthy: David Beckham has not yet discussed a contract extension with MLS, though may be open to a return next year at 37. “If I continue to feel like I do right now then I’ll continue to play,” Beckham said…Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United may be finished in the transfer market this summer because the player he wants (Modric/Nasri/Sneijder presumably) is “not available.” He also, half-jokingly, dropped another “noisy neighbors” jibe at Manchester City ahead of the Community Shield.
Not so Newsworthy: Thierry Henry has no plans to return to Europe or to international play, because…well…duh. He also confirmed that he is “the boss” of neither Arsenal nor Man United and does not know what those clubs will do in the transfer market….Sir Alex claimed his team’s 7-0 destruction of the Seattle Sounders was a “false result” and closer than it seemed. (It probably should have only been 5-0)…Wayne Rooney is aware his brother is playing for the Red Bulls and hopes he continues to work hard and improve…Everyone is happy to be there and looking forward to the match, EVERYONE.
More From My Notes: Beckham is…camera ready. He’s like some sort of facial uber-yogi. He has to force reactions to stimuli. Somehow, this became his default expression. His hair was parted at a perfect right-angle, not a follicle out of place…Lot of ill-fitting polos and button downs…”On field All-Star Team Chemistry…someone find me a noose.”
Found this during a down period: Every Thierry Henry goal for Arsenal.

I don’t want to sound dickish, but this is all you got out of the presser? Seems a bit short, no?

I didn’t even know there was one first off. Second off, you should just shut your whore mouth. Why? I don’t know, just felt like unleashing that.
I guess in actuality though, these press conferences really don’t get anything of value said during them so whatever.

Most newsworthy of all is the fact that only one Union player made the team.

Or that no members of the Crew made the team, despite being tied for first in the (albeit weaker) Eastern Conference.
The MLS front office would like the Crew to just continue to sell tickets and be a schedule filler for NY and LA. Yet, all they do is just keep winning. It’s really got to piss them off.

I keep hearing the talking heads saying that this team seems like it was picked as a team to compete with Man U, as opposed to a true All-Star team. I think that’s a terrible way to go about it, it takes away All-Star spots from guys who are truly deserving of them. IIRC, the All-Stars have generally done well against their European competition over the years, so I’m not sure why they would feel the need to alter that just because it’s Man U coming to town.
