So the Minnesota Timberwolves Want to Interview Larry Brown
Remember back in May when Larry Brown was begging Penn State to be its basketball coach, but the Nittany Lions passed? (Apparently, Brown was also in the mix at UNLV, Oklahoma, and Missouri, but didn’t land any of those jobs, either.) Clearly, Next Town Brown is hard-up to get back into the coaching game at the age of 70, and he’s so desperate, he’s willing to move the Minnesota and coach the Timberwolves under the watchful eye of pathetic general manager (and friend?) David Kahn. Writes Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune:
Kahn and Brown have known each other since the late 1970s when Brown coached UCLA and Kahn was a student-newspaper reporter there and Kahn considers Brown one of his mentors.
I’m all for the Wolves’ bringing in a veteran coach to lead one of the youngest teams in the league, and part of me hopes Larry Brown is the guy. Brown and Michael Beasley and Ricky Rubio? Splendid. If the NBA has a 2011-2012 season, they should attempt to do a Hard Knocks-style show, and outside of the obvious teams (Heat, Bulls, Thunder, etc), Minnesota would have to warrant consideration.

..and they are fucking morons for doing so. Back to being 10th in the Big Ten standings. We’ll always have the 2009 NIT championship.
July 25th, 2011 at 1:57 PM
Of course they do.
July 25th, 2011 at 1:58 PM
It might be a blessing in disguise. The Wolves are young and need direction. Brown can make them into a team before he flees town.
That said, since I doubt we’re getting an NBA season in 2011-12, this likely won’t go far.

David Kahn went from being a student reporter to an NBA GM?!?!
I’m guessing he probably did something else in the intervening years
July 25th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
I hate it when I’m in the locker room and Larry Brown flashes his crank.
/Toby in Houston.
July 25th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
No, I know – I’m just surprised he’s an NBA GM at all.
July 25th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
“You gotta play hard! Play the right way!”
Hasn’t it been noted that Brown’s message usually wears off on NBA players after about a year?

Speaking of Larry’s, Curb was pretty fucking funny last night.
July 25th, 2011 at 2:19 PM
Yeah, let’s talk about a sport that isn’t going to play this year instead of the insanity of MLB trade deadline & NFL free agency
July 25th, 2011 at 2:19 PM

The Giants don’t really need to score many runs, we have the pitching to lock down high powered offenses.

Yeah, I was using a little hyperbole.
I don’t baseball, so I have no idea. I haven’t baseballed in years, but I don’t remember the trade deadline even actually being the last time you cold acquire players from other teams, either. I also don’t care, so forget I said anything.
July 25th, 2011 at 2:27 PM
I hope youre referring to the drastic change in home ballparks?
July 25th, 2011 at 2:27 PM

It’s kind of hard to believe that there are 6 teams worse at scoring runs than the Astros, but there it is.
July 25th, 2011 at 2:27 PM
Yeah, playing 81 games in Fenway instead of Petco National Park will do that…

Tough watching those games. I dozed off a few times. The pitching wasn’t even that great Saturday night… nobody could score…. and what made it worse was that it took forever. Felt like an American League game, minus the runs.
July 25th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
Yah.
July 25th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
Its why I picked Adrian for MVP the day we signed him.. dude has always raked, he would only rake more at Fenway
July 25th, 2011 at 2:30 PM

You are correct. Trades can occur after 7/31, but players have to go through waivers first. That tends to prevent any blockbusters from happening.
That the trade deadline ends at 12pm instead of 12am has also taken out some of the mystique. I still remember ’98 when the Astros traded for Randy Johnson at 11:45pm EST.

Funny to think that the guy the Marlins got when they traded him away is currently sitting in prison for hacking someone to death with a machete. Never change Marlins.

July 25th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
WWOS, You feel good about Reddick being the full time right fielder for the foreseeable future? How convenient that JD Drew discovered an injury this weekend, around the time he wouldve started getting benched for him anyway.
July 25th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
Tell me things about Kyle Kosier, dirt. I want to know if his name coming up in rumors is a good or bad thing.
he plays LG for Dallas, and has been reasonably rock solid. He’s about the only one of Dallas’s 5 that deserved any accolade. Because he plays next to a really, really stupid center, he has much experience calling coverages. He can spot center in a pinch, but has never done it in an NFL game. He’s a moving guard, primarily used for pulling to to the right. Dallas uses no zone blocking schemes, though, so he’s used to having an assignment, even on pull plays. He’s very ugly, and looks dirty all the time. And anything, anything at all, in the universe anywhere, is an upgrade over Robert Garza. You in a sumo suit is an upgrade over garza.
I’m pretty sure Dallas is going to pay him, though, but we’ll see.
July 25th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
Game times…
Friday: 2:24
Saturday: 2:53
Sunday: 2:28
Yeah, I guess 2:53 is long for a typical Giants game, but that’s still only 5 innings for a normal Red Sox or Yankees game.
July 25th, 2011 at 2:34 PM
Funny, Friday night’s Sox/Mariners was exactly 2:53
July 25th, 2011 at 2:35 PM
The second I started to read about Adrian and his approach to hitting, I thought it was a great deal, and don’t miss the prospects at all (same way I never missed Hanley…) I was a little more unsure about Crawford being valuable in a park where his speed defensively was useless, though he seems to be coming around at the plate I hope.
http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/red-sox/post/_/id/12740/soxprospects-past-trades-where-are-they-now
Here is why Sox fans need to stop overvaluing prospects.
July 25th, 2011 at 2:35 PM
eah, I guess 2:53 is long for a typical Giants game, but that’s still only 5 innings for a normal Red Sox or Yankees game.
My point was that 4-2 games shouldn’t be 3 hours long. Thanks for crapping on it though!

July 25th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
Well, I like that scouting report. With that kind of skill, it sounds like he’d cost a fair amount and I don’t know if the Bears would be willing to pay. In fact, I doubt they would.
July 25th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
Eh… I feel fine for this year, and with Ells/Crawford, you gotta figure Kalish/Reddick/Navarro should be okay. My worry is that Reddick will lose his new-found plate discipline. He’s never even been a guy to consistently hit in the minors but is streaky. I’d worry more that basically the top 4-5 OFs are all lefty. It’s a heavily lefty lineup right now, and susceptible to a tough southpaw pitcher.
As far as Drew, I give him a pass. He basically has said the Reddick deserves to start. This gives him rest, and a chance for a few consistent AB’s in a rehab assignment. As much as he’s sucked, he’s been a team player and said the right things this year.
July 25th, 2011 at 2:39 PM

July 25th, 2011 at 2:42 PM

the market is about to be completely flooded with players. Older guys will be desperate to sign anywhere there’s money, really soon. There’s so many free agent linemen.
July 25th, 2011 at 2:42 PM
No problem, glad I could help! haha
July 25th, 2011 at 2:42 PM
Also CJ: If you click that link, I don’t think enough Sox fans realize that a lot of trades are necessary because of 40 man roster spots. The Gabbard/Murphy for Gagne trade was more about getting rid of two guys who weren’t going to start for the Sox, and couldn’t be kept on the 40, for a guy who would net a draft pick compensation (which was then used to acquire Victor Martinez).
