Texas A&M is (Finally) Raising a Bit of a Stink About the Longhorn Network
The Longhorn Network, which will be a financial boon to the University of Texas, has apparently pissed off rival Texas A&M. My question: What took the Aggies so long to raise a stink about this?
UT’s network, funded by ESPN, might put the league’s other nine schools at disadvantages on multiple fronts, and A&M is leading the way in checking every possibility – and also leaving its long-term options open should the league appear to have one dominating member thanks primarily to the unprecedented network.
Only now Texas A&M is bitching about how a 20-year, $300 million union between Texas and ESPN could be a bad thing? It’s too late, Aggies. Better fire up those future contingency plans and crowbar your way into the SEC.
I’m not sure what’s the more intriguing angle – Texas going independent in a couple years, or what the heck happens to the other teams left in the Big 12. Oklahoma will be fine, but what will become of programs like Kansas State and Iowa State? Which conference is going to want them?

Welcome to the MWC.

Actually, unless the SEC opened up to TAMU and Oklahoma, you’d probably see the Big 12 stay in tact and add a team or three.

Might? Wonder how many recruits in the state (and surrounding states) will be watching hours and hours of TEXAS IS AWESOME programming on the Longhorn Network?
Texas is already the first choice for the majority of in-state recruits, no matter their quality. Texas has it’s virtual pick of the litter each year. There is not a lot of room for them to move upward.

Who the fuck wants to watch a network devoted to one school? I’m a big ND fan, but the fuck do I care if the Irish had their own network. Seems like a stupid investment to me. Might be naive, but I wouldn’t even watch an all 49er network that much.

Texas fans. There’s kind of a lot of them too. Many of whom didn’t even go there.

Sadly the Big East probably will.

Would K State really have trouble jumping to another conference?
July 19th, 2011 at 4:30 PM
Gotta give TCU someone to have a local rivalry with…
July 19th, 2011 at 4:30 PM
Iowa State? More easy wins in football and basketball!
July 19th, 2011 at 4:30 PM

They would probably insist on being a package deal with Kansas. Kansas will not have any problems because of their basketball program.

Texas going independent in a couple years, or what the heck happens to the other teams left in the Big 12.
Texas isn’t going anywhere, because…
20-year, $300 million union between Texas and ESPN
They own the conference. No reason to go it alone. aTm is way too late in bitching about this, though.

Give us another couple of years and we’ll be there.

This is true. I’m not sure the Big East can continue to exist as currently constituted and you might see a split between the basketball and football schools.
I think they will be closely monitoring the BYU situation.

There may be some merit to this, but I’m going to assume you haven’t spent much time in Texas. There’s a shit ton of media revolving around the aTm and that school is rich as hell. Adding another media option probably won’t sway a 17 year kid’s mind where to go to school.

As a Mizzou fan, I want to hear nothing more about the Big 12′s eventual demise. You quickly learn just how desirable (or undesirable) your school is when these conversations come up. That being said, I give the conference another 3-5 years before Texas forces the dominoes to fall.

I’m not sure what BYU was thinking in going it alone. Sure, there’s lots of Mormons (Mormon ND), but, I dunno. They left a mid-tier conference. Wait and see.

A split needed to happen like yesterday. The conference is mostly run by the Providences of the world which makes no fucking sense because they don’t participate in the main college sport at a D1 level.

Everybody is assuming TCU is gonna run wild in the Big East. The most likely scenario is that TCU gets the stink of the Big East on them and surrenders to sweet mediocrity.

They were the big fish in a little pond and wasn’t getting anything in return from their support of the conference. I think you’ll see it play out quite favorably as you’ll notice a ton more BYU games on ESPN, etc.

Noted. If they can get more afternoon and primetime games as opposed to the 10 pm ESPN2 game, that’ll be a bonus.

I was referring more to SMU being a legitimate non-conference rival to them again. We owned TCU in the 1920s, 40s, 60s, part of the 70s, and the 80s. The 90s were a mixed bag, but we have exactly 1 win against them in the last decade: 2005, the week after they beat Oklahoma.
But I do agree on the Big East. TCU I think will do well in the short term, but I’m curious how playing a predominantly eastern schedule will affect their recruiting.

i love aggie, but they may need to shut the fuck up. they still think they are in the big boy CFB zone, and they arent. The SEC didnt want them, that was some aggie posturing bullshit. TAMU isnt that good int eh big 12, they would be worse in the SEC.

I’m sure 80 hours per week of men’s volleyball and water polo replays from 2009 will really give UT’s recruiting a boost.

The network will be a boon to all other sports UT recruits. Will have some impact on football recruiting. It will be showing choice high school football games throughout the year with what I assume will be high-target recruits. That’s going to be a huge plus.
July 20th, 2011 at 6:46 AM
I think it would’ve been good for A&M to jump to the Pac-10/12. As a USC alum, I think it would force all teams to raise their games and would open up the fertile hotbeds of Texas and California to do serious battle for recruits. I think it would raise the game of all schools to stay competitive — especially if A&M could bring TCU along with them. And not football, but baseball and hoops as well.
Can you imagine the revenue it would bring? But especially start new rivalries. What’s not to like? With due respect to Utah and Colorado, I think that would’ve been a more interesting merger.
