It Looks Like Maybe Mathew Stafford Has Put on a Few Pounds
Doughy? Is that the best way to describe oft-injured Detroit Lions’ QB Matt Stafford in this photo, purportedly taken recently? Stafford reminds me of a chubbier Tom Brady … back when Brady partook in the NFL combine.
If you read this site, you know we’re fans of Stafford’s work – he’s a solid interview – and this gutty performance was one of the greatest moments of the 2009 NFL season.
In Stafford’s defense, perhaps the farmer’s tan is a sign he’s been tossing the football around on a practice field recently. Also, nice job with the lady friend there, Mr. Stafford. That’s a body. [via Busted Coverage]

July 19th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
who cares, he’s still pulling in quality trim.
July 19th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
What am I missing here? He’s never been a skinny dude. He doesn’t look any bigger than normal.
July 19th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
TBL is stuck in the grocery store line.

He’s built like a quarterback.

The latest Bill Barnwell offering on Grantland is solid.
July 19th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
Would rather see an update on Jared Lorenzen, my all time favorite QB.
July 19th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
Are those the same boobs he was with when he left college?

ben roethlisberger looks as if he devoured carl’s sr. too.
Cutler looks like he’s had quite a few of those deep dish ‘pizzas’
July 19th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
I’d bet he’d look stacked in a smedium tee.
July 19th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Surprised he hasn’t broken a hand or jaw if he’s eating so much.
July 19th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
cutler’s double chin is what makes him so emo.
July 19th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Are those the same boobs she had when she left college?
Awfully perky. A little too perky to be natural.
July 19th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
If he is eating trim like that then by all means go get obese Stafford.
July 19th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
CUTLER JUST HAS BIG BONES, ASSHOLES.
July 19th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
He’s trying to hold back his boobs.
July 19th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Stafford’s first two seasons are very comparable to JaMarcus’, and yet Russell is the poster boy for bad rookie contracts. Interesting.
July 19th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
you could make some damn nice stock with his turkey neck.

Stafford’s first two seasons are very comparable to JaMarcus’, and yet Russell is the poster boy for bad rookie contracts. Interesting.
But Stafford has been injury-plagued his first 2 years while JaMarcus was plagued by baconators.

c’mon. Stafford has been wrecked by injuries and he looked damn good in those 3 games last year. He also gives a damn, unlike Jamarcus.

I dunno. I don’t see the difference and actually feel a little weird about trying to find older shirtless photos of another dude so that I can compare and see how many pounds he has put on.
July 19th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
eh, there’s no mention of chicks in tube tops or Busch Light. probably why they had to go across the river.

i’ve been spending far too much time outside … which is a good thing. much darker skin tone makes you look stronger than you actually are. for the last 3 months, been doing 4 days of weights, 2 days of hoops. still can’t get rid of the damn muffin top, though.
I’ll see Jay V next week, he can tell you guys if i look different. i may wear an NBA jersey (Stephen Curry, if it ever arrives) to an MLB game.

Weight lifting builds stronger bones. I can’t remember if this also includes the Show muscles.
July 19th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
I could work out all day every day and never get really cut. I’m fine with pretty good shape. And pizza.
July 19th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
same here dude, but I work out about half that. I’ve put on a ton of muscle though so I’m not complaining about that. the one complaint I do have is that my metabolism has probably quadrupled. I am constantly hungry.

Spencer you lost 35 lbs? So you were a fatty? I thought you were a skinny weed dude.
July 19th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
Uh huh. The worst thing you can do is go several hours between meals, because you tend to overeat at that next meal. Keep a steady pace and your body (and reflection) will thank you.

For instance, I have a turkey, sandwich/sub, for lunch everyday… Even though it’s got some protein, I’m assuming that’s loaded with carbs (bread). Do you guys just not eat bread?
July 19th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
BFFredo – Muscle mass has more volume than fat, so persons who add muscle while losing weight tend to stay at the same level or actually gain weight. So while you’ve possibly only lost 10 pounds, you could have cut a decent amount of body fat percentage and replaced it with muscle.

carbs are fine as long as you work out. and i only used to cut carbs when i was trying to lose weight as they’re necessary to build muscle (cant do both at the same time…no matter what commercial says otherwise).
as for carbs – whole grain bread, rice and pastas. sweet potatoes. oatmeal. shit like that.
July 19th, 2011 at 11:33 AM
Stafford doesn’t look fat either… maybe in the face a little bit… but he just seems like a big dude. He could work out 6 hours a day and never look like Brady Quinn.
July 19th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
i fluctuate like crazy. i went thru a phase from last summer to about march where i was cooking super rich food all the time and eating like a pig. i never got “fat” fat, but i def put on some weight.
didnt realize until i went to the doctor in march how much i gained. i was 240…freaked me out cuz that meant i gained half of the weight i lost back. now im back down to my natural weight of around 200-210…anything more than that and i look emaciated.
July 19th, 2011 at 11:35 AM
You need carbs for energy. Complex carbs are not a no-no: brown rice, oatmeal, pasta, grains. Simple cards like candy, chocolate, alcohol, fast food are what kill you. But take carbs in moderation. And, as spencer has done, avoid them late in the day because your body won’t break them down (bc you’re probably resting) and thus they’ll be stored as fat.
July 19th, 2011 at 11:36 AM
What do y’all recommend eating if carbs are a no-no?
I will never buy into carbs being a no-no. You need them for exercise. No-no on carbs is for fat middle aged moms that want to lose weight without actually doing anything. How soon we forget that the Atkin’s Diet was a big fraud.
July 19th, 2011 at 11:36 AM

whole grain bread. look at the ingredients on any kind of bread item that isn’t whole grain or whole wheat and it is enriched flour. that is the shit that sticks to you. I always check the ingredients before I buy anything.

Having just gotten back from Europe, I worked out at a gym for the first time in 11 months on Friday. I did chest and tri and when I tried to do the same thing on Monday to get back to my old routine, I was too sore to do chest, so I did back and bi. I’m in a lot of pain right now.
Apparently my pushup and dumbbell workout in Italy was insufficient to keep me where I was before I left.

July 19th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Yeah, if you drink pop go diet or zero, but don’t do it much. Maybe a can or two a week. The “fake sugar” put in diet sodas trick your body and actually make it crave real sugar. I don’t drink much diet pop, but when I do, I notice later in the day I crave sugar. No lie.
July 19th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
except diet soda’s are so, so gross.

YYSA – Funny you say that. I just looked at my credit card bill and i went to the grocery store ONCE last month. Fewest probably in the last 4 years. That’s a sign that a) wife is cook, b) i’m eating too much fast food.

I’m currently at around 188-192, and I’d like to get down to 170ish. I just have no will to do anything after work and I like beer too much. I used to be 155 before I became an office drone six years ago.
July 19th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
Then buy trail mix. Best thing to keep in your desk is something like that because the peanuts, cashews or whatever else provide protein. I keep beef jerky in my desk, too.
The reason I stay thin is of course my metabolism but I also don’t have a sweet tooth. I have a salt tooth. Rarely do I eat candy, maybe once a week. I’ve managed to somehow kick my potato chip habit for the most part. I eat like 4 times a day, smaller portions. My flaw is not eating breakfast all the time.

TBL, plank and side plank are great. And this will sound crazy but 8 minute abs is actually a decent workout. I would do it twice in a row, however, to really get something out of it.
July 19th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
I go to the gym at least 5 – 6 nights a week.. .my biggest obstacle is my lack of energy. I’m motivated to get there… it’s just some days I’m fucking exhausted and don’t really feel like I get a good workout in. That’s an even shittier feeling than not going at all, IMO.
July 19th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
The best thing you can do is cardio. Distance and sprint interval running, elliptical, bike. High rep sets of low weight could also get your heart pumping and burning calories.

My gym membership costs $15. It’s not one of those fancy places. It’s in a strip mall and doesn’t have a salt water pool or sauna, but it’s got everything you need. Good for the wallet… the eye candy ratio suffers a bit though.

We should all also keep in mind that heredity/genes play a big role in our physique. Some of us can’t gain or lose like we’d like, not because we aren’t busting ass in the gym and eating right, but because we’re handcuffed to our family tree.

I’ve been doing sculling (rowing) all summer, which I had never done before. That shit kills your entire body, and its a hell of a lot harder than it looks.

i used to envy that my sister got my dad’s metabolism and couldn’t gain weight if she tried…but it’s great being able to gain weight without having to stuff my face with 7,500 calories.

That’s nuts… physics is fascinating sometimes. And it’s always over my head.

same here, almost to a T. although the last two days I’ve had shit to do in the morning so I’ve gone a tad later and there were a few decent chicks in there. I just can’t do the after work crowd. too many douches and too many people.

Yeah… I wait until they clear out… go from about 830 – 930.

going to the gym between 10-2 is the best…that’s when all the ladies come out since they won’t get eye fucked by 90% of the gym.
July 19th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
what’s wrong with No Explode? I used to take that shit all the time. Felt like I could run through a brick wall and tackle a Buick. I haven’t touched that or any of those workout pills in probably four or five years…

I’m slowly getting back to the gym with the wife. We got her a personal diet/exercise guy who’s really good at motivating her.

a) it’s expensive
b) gives you the thundershits and increases heart rate, blood pressure and gives a lot of people sleep issues
c) could lead to heart problems and most likely has some sort of long-term health effect. those types of supplements’ long-term effects aren’t known yet, so for all we know, shit could cause all sorts of bad news down the road.
when i took it, squats were risky. i felt like i could poop everywhere at a moment’s notice.

I got an idea how you all can lose all the weight you want. Come mow my yard sometime this week. Heat + Humidity + Yard Work = Heat Stroke. I mean a great body.
July 19th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
nothing worse than getting out of the shower at the gym and smelling/hearing this go down. so fucking gross.
July 19th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
spencer gets it. The worst part about those energy drinks/shakes/supplements is that they’re boost lasts longer than your 1-2 hour workout. I would advise taking the full recommended dosage until you’ve eased into it. You could take it at 5 p.m., hit the gym at 5:30 p.m., and be wide-eyed and ready to hunt some zombies at 1 a.m.
