ESPN Ombudsman Says Bruce Feldman Was Never Suspended, But Says ESPN Handled His Situation Poorly
The ESPN Ombudsman has weighed in on the Bruce Feldman fiasco and rendered a verdict. I got the feeling Kelly McBride’s analysis ended with a hung jury. ESPN screwed up and Feldman was at fault, too. (Interestingly, McBride didn’t reach out to Mike Leach for comment, or delve into the sketchy Craig James/Joe Schad stuff that’s in the book. It’s a pretty one-sided take. Feldman has steadfastly refused comment.)
Clearly, plenty of people are tired or confused or simply bored with this story. That’s understandable. For the eight of you still kind of interested … let’s tie a bow on this bad boy, shall we?
Bruce Feldman – who is more well-known for this kerfuffle than anything he’s ever written – got permission in 2007 to write a book with then-Texas Tech coach Mike Leach. When Leach was fired, Feldman spoke with one of his bosses, Gary Hoenig, who told him, “short of getting out of the book, you need to remove your name from the book and distance yourself from the book. I said, ‘Are you sure you want to do this? This could really harm your career at ESPN.’ ” Feldman, perhaps agreeing with Hoenig, went from being a co-author to an “editor.”
After Leach sued ESPN, Feldman didn’t circle back to ESPN, and none of the people at ESPN who knew about the book said anything to him. That’s a colossal brick on both ends.
(At a minimum, should Feldman have given his bosses a heads up a couple days before the excerpts dropped?)
That’s why, when the excerpts came out last week, Bristol suits were shocked at how the book exposed some pretty clear failures in journalism at ESPN (the Craig James/Joe Schad stuff that still is getting dusted under the rug). So Feldman was told to – and this is where it is semantics – cool out for a bit, which some (many?) took as “he was suspended.”
Kelly McBride, writing for Poynter, says repeatedly that Feldman was never suspended (as Sports by Brooks first reported) – “A suspension is a disciplinary action involving human resources, a record in your file and not being allowed onto the company premises for a period of time … Lying low and staying out of the public eye is different than being forced to stay home from work” – and his bosses at ESPN, Rob King and Chad Millman, essentially say that Feldman hasn’t tweeted because he’s paralyzed by nerves. Understandable. Will he show up at SEC media days this week?
I thought this paragraph by McBride summed up the debacle:
Instead, this recent online fracas is a result of cascading decisions that were made with good intentions but without the proper attention to core values and loyalties. Had ESPN put its obligation to bring fans the best independently reported information first, everyone would have recognized that Feldman’s involvement in the book itself was a bad idea — a conflict of interest in the making. That first bad decision was compounded by additional conflicts that surfaced as ESPN reported on the controversy between Leach and a player who was also the son of a powerful ESPN commentator, material that ultimately became a chapter in the book. Feldman’s authorship of the book became untenable when Leach sued ESPN.
So, how long until ESPN decides that if you’re a reporter, you can’t write a book on someone you cover? [Ombudsman]

Until Bruce Feldman says something, anything, I’m not sure I have an opinion on this matter any more. I read that Poynter thing last night… well as much of it as I could. SbB is taking his crusade too far but I still think where there’s smoke there’s fire. Kinda like Cam Newton.

Sure it was Duckworth, I just felt like throwing in a shot at the Bears, after SCs trolling yesterday.

Yeah, SBB is so freaking credible. His Cam obsession made me doubt his #freebruce obsession from the get go. He’s like Joe Schad only with no overseer or want for credibility.

Meh… that is so old/in the past, I’m getting over it very quickly. We’ll never know what happened, and just have to trust in Gooddell. I’d personally rather fight the NFL and force them to lower prices and not be greedy assholes, but there are too many sheep who just don’t care, who kneel at the throne of Gooddell to enjoy the magnanimous flavor of his member in their mouths, just happy football will return, rather than angry that we were forced to spend a year discussing why millionaires and billionaires couldn’t agree on how to split a gazillion dollars, they all should just trust in Lord Roger’s ‘Spygate’ verdict and penalties and accept that the championships are valid and the punishment for disregarding a league memo, sufficient and a dead story.
July 19th, 2011 at 2:53 PM
I appreciate that if it isn’t sarcasm. I’ve stuck by what I believe to be the actual story from the get-go. Cecil fucked up. Realized he fucked up. Found refuge in Auburn with his son. Cam started over free of the money trails in Mississippi and was not paid to go to Auburn.
July 19th, 2011 at 2:53 PM
You know what, Cleet? I think the first half of Cane Mutiny is awesome. The randomly ordered and sometimes unimportant game writeups were a little lazy. It just seemed like the book was due so he went back and pulled up some game recaps to beef up his word count and he didn’t really have any kind of plan for assembling them.

NFL Sunday Ticket is free this year. Or, if you have cable like me, there’s RedZone (fuck all of you before you even start).
As for ticket prices… honestly, let’s poll the audience. When was the last time you went to an NFL game and paid for the ticket? Mine was in 2007 and it was a preseason game. The only two NFL regular season games I’ve been to the tickets were gifted to me.

Someone’s cranky. Also, why would you want to go to an NFL game at souless/quiet Gillette Stadium? I’ve been to a few Packer games, but I’d never consider getting season tickets (if that were a possibility). The NFL is best when experienced through your HDTV.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:05 PM
NFL Sunday Ticket is free this year.
I don’t think this is accurate.. unless you sign up for DirecTV for at least a year.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:05 PM
It hurt because I knew it would happen when they played the Chargers, that they weren’t good enough/playing well enough to win it all, and everyone saw undefeated and looked past some of the ridiculous luck (cue Ravens fans) needed down the stretch…
If Peyton taught us anything, it’s that there is such a thing as being too good on offense, and just wearing the shit out of your defense all year.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:06 PM

July 19th, 2011 at 3:08 PM
I’m not sure how being devastated after a loss after spending all season defending a team you grew up loving to an entire world hating them, fuels a bandwagon fan meme?
Apparently Ritty believes me when I say it’s possible that the tapes weren’t accessed during the game which then provided to real advantage compared to any other team.

/especially since I missed 1986 for the Red Sox, and the Pats didn’t have too many heartbreaking losses before 2007 (vs. was tough, but hardly surprising or heartbreaking), and I was never a big Celts-Bruins fan… nor do I claim them now that they win.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:13 PM
Devastated is understandable (and how I currently feel) but saying that it is easier to feel jaded at the NFL because your team lost a SB 4 years ago after winning 3 the previous 7 or whatever leads fans of teams who have not had that success more inclined to believe you fandom roots are shallow and only planted in 2001.
I am not saying you are or aren’t, just saying it feeds the meme.

It’s not that much more than cable. Might even be cheaper, depending on the package. Some DTV cable packages start at $29. My parents used to have it… would have kept it when they moved, but they couldn’t get a DTV signal at their house because of tree cover. Wouldn’t recommend it in a northern climate though.. snow fucks with the picture pretty bad.

I guess, but I don’t think about the first 3 of 7 at all. I only care about that year, and really winning last year or the year before or 40 years ago doesn’t ease the pain much for me, since I’m not from Pittsburgh or Green Bay. You end with a win or a loss, and there’s only one way that’s fun. And when it’s historic it’s easier. I shouldn’t have said I’m writing off the NFL though, I just won’t forgive them. I’ll watch every Pats game I can, and root for them just as much as ever, but I am just not over 2007 yet.
When the Red Sox seasons are over, I’m generally sad even if they win, because it’s such a long journey you take together.

I’ll probably never have a land line either… however… the awesomeness of the clarity of a land line/lack of delay cannot be understated. I’d gotten so used to constantly interrupting the person I was talking with on a cell phone, I’d forgotten what it’s like to talk on a land line. ATT and Verizon need to take some of that 80 bucks a month they’re charging and invest it into improving voice clarity.

That the game that was Ron Dayne’s moment in the NFL sun?

He’s been wrong about multiple Auburn items. Or he hides behind the fact that he isn’t technically “wrong” since he blogged about actual facts…in a directed way to make certain people understand the underlying accusations…that aren’t true. i.e. see the Auburn hostess fiasco.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
Would like a clarification of that…
July 19th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
I fucking hate New England sports fans. I mean that in the nicest way possible. But seriously, fuck off.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
Auburn hostess fiasco
That sounds like a more exciting story than it actually is. Can you really call it a fiasco?
July 19th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
Would like a clarification of that…
Here let me help. I think this sentence alone about sums it up
“When the Red Sox seasons are over, I’m generally sad even if they win, because it’s such a long journey you take together.”
July 19th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
I’ve heard that if you threaten to cancel, they’ll break down and give you the deal.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:22 PM
This. Its not like the Patriots have a goose egg in the ole championship line.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:22 PM
Did LSU just get stung by the NCAA?
July 19th, 2011 at 3:22 PM
I can call his “reporting” of it a fiasco.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:23 PM
I’ve heard that if you threaten to cancel, they’ll break down and give you the deal.
Tried that last week when I wanted to switch to FIOS TV. They basically gave me a 2 month credit on my account and paid for the rest of my MLB package. So basically I will be switching to FIOS in October.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:23 PM
This. Its not like the Patriots have a goose egg in the ole championship line.
Even if they did… Boston’s got the Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics, all with titles in the last 5 years. Cry me a fucking river about 2007.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:23 PM
Would like a clarification of that…
I wrote it in plain english. You, sir, are difficult to like, as you hold irrational grudges against sports leagues for your team not going undefeated.
You also have extremely thin skin about any criticism of you.
I do not dislike you, but I often bristle when you talk. I find you difficult to like. I find you “kinda” unlikeable.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:23 PM
I went to Heinz field years ago, it was cold and raining and the Steelers lost to the Rams, but I had a blast. Totally worth the price.
Also, I have been to Qualcomm (or whatever its called nowadays) numerous times. That place is a shit hole. I can’t wait for the new LA Bills/Jaguars/Chargers with their state of the art stadium.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:23 PM
butters…he had a TD. not sure if it was his high watermark tho.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:24 PM

July 19th, 2011 at 3:26 PM
eh, you at least have a grasp on reality regarding OSU, although CC seems to be humanizing himself a little bit.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:27 PM
1996 sucked… but wasn’t completely surprising or historic, either, given their past years.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:27 PM
I have had mixed success, though I am only bluffing as I have zero interest in switching to somebody else and explaining the new channels to my wife and kids as well as dealing with all the questions/problems they would run into with a new UI/remote.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:27 PM
Ha, yep, that was indeed the game then where he won the Phil Simms cobbler (this is what I bring up in a joking tone when people say he was an NFL bust) thanks to that and a long run in OT to set up the winning field goal…his actual high water mark was probably when he added his name to the list of guys to run all over the 2006 Colts during that regular season
July 19th, 2011 at 3:27 PM
I was just trying to compare it to the angst I get from the NBA. I am still pissed about the fiasco of a Spurs/Suns series from 5 years ago, but if the Suns were working on their 4th title in that run…I probably could give a shit now.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:28 PM
+1 for this kind sir
July 19th, 2011 at 3:28 PM
isn’t he a UGA grad? him and parrish (and apparently all UGA fans) seem to be cut from the same mold regarding Auburn. I personally think some shady shit went down, but I am not going to let it take me to my grave like some people seem to do.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:28 PM
I picked up the Red Sox in 1992 and Pats in 1994-5… sorry if that’s incompatible with your view of the Pats, cleet.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
I still wish bad things on John Elway for Super Bowl XXXII but didn’t hold that against the NFL, that shit was Gilbert Brown’s fault
July 19th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
You’re still hurting about 1993. I can tell. But you hide it well.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
zero interest in switching to somebody else and explaining the new channels to my wife and kids as well as dealing with all the questions/problems they would run into with a new UI/remote.
my whole system just got updated from stone age to antiquated by charter cable, and the only two buttons my wife can figure out any more are channel up and channel down. But miraculously, she can always find PBS if I leave the room for a minute.

Yeah, he’s a UGA grad so he knows how the SEC works. Say something bad about one school, that school responds with hits and comments, then that school’s enemies get involved in the hilarity and you’re the Paul Finebaum of the Internet getting a shitload of hits.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:32 PM
Legit LOL from me on that one.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:33 PM

July 19th, 2011 at 3:33 PM

I don’t understand it.. .it’s like they have an unnecessary inferiority complex.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
I blame mother nature and Rex Grossman’s hands for Super Bowl XLI. I blame Alex Gonzalez for 2003′s NLCS. I blame Nikolai “drink drink vroom vroom” Khabibulin for 2009′s failed Blackhawks run. I blame STEVE FUCKING LARMER and his idiotic defensive zone awareness for this in 1992. (most pain as a sports fan ever, more than 2003′s NLDS) And I blame the Packers dirty techniques for last year’s NFC Title game.
As you can tell, I could really give a shit that the Bulls lost the ECF last year. I cheered and wanted to win, but I don’t really care.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
No, I’m an asshole in real life.
And the NCAA made sure to laud LSU’s cooperation – which might bode well for OSU considering their level of self reporting. Will it be enough to help them avoid a bowl ban? Who knows.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
Spencer- they basically said that LSU avoide more harsher penalties by being so cooperative and the fact that they self reported everything. OSU also did both
July 19th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
The weather was the only thing that kept that game close…and don’t bring up dirty play in last year’s NFC Title Game when your overpaid DE speared Rodgers in the head
July 19th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
Brooks was also once employed, for a very, very short time, with the sports radio station in Columbus. He’s got much the axe to grind with my fair city too.
/He was a douche on the radio too
July 19th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
Thats because the Bulls got money in the bank with 6 titles. Plus its a young team so you can lie to yourself and say it will eventually happen.

1460theFan. I appreciate the guys’ efforts, but again, I have lost a ton of respect for “journalists” who are going after college football programs. Who went to college to file freedom of information waivers? They’ve turned into nothing more than meter maids. Like it’s tough to go after bigtime football programs. What do they think they’re accomplishing?
July 19th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
No, I’m an asshole in real life.
honestly, I think you wish you were an asshole. That’s the aspiration. You’re probably a prick in real life.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:39 PM
I thought this explained when said DE came out anti-cancer and stated he was offended by Rodgers Pro-Cancer stance? That plus the rampant rumors of Rodgers drowning puppies, and one can hardly blame him.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
You speak the truth. I really did not appreciate those for what they were worth as a child. In fact, when I was a kid, I never really had to endure a soul crushing loss other than the Blackhawks in ’92. The Cubs were awful, the Bears I really hadn’t embraced yet and the Bulls were dominant and steamrolling.
I guess that’s why I took to hockey. It made me want to win more.

They are. Unless you’re a bandwagon jumper.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
but that’s just the way it is these days. if reporter A doesn’t file the FOI, reporter B is, so you might as well just do it. I know that’s not they way they teach it in school, but with the way news travels these days via internet, twitter, etc., the FOI is probably the easy way out. in regards to the big time football programs, is there an easier way to make a name for yourself than bringing down say, OSU, with some potential violations? not as long as espn is around to plaster it all over 15 channels as well as a popular website. it may not be right, but it’s the way it is in this “information age”.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
Nodding the whole way. With all the digging that was done here in Columbus in the last 4 months by wanna-bes and up and comers, that there was virtually nothing unearthed that was any more than a mosquito bite.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
Thats the way it should be.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:46 PM
I liked the Eagles when I was a kid, Spencer. QB Eagles and Tecmo Bowl. I watched the Bears with my dad, but Tecmo Bowl had that power to make me like Randall Cunningham. I even had a really ugly Eagles hat, this one.
I also didn’t play football. I played baseball and hockey.
July 19th, 2011 at 3:47 PM

for some people it’s about the journey they take with the team. Or some such bullshit. You’re sad when they win, too, because you were on the journey as well.

This whole thread has made me feel like I’m very unwelcome at TBL, and some of it has genuinely hurt my feelings… I would never force my way into a site I’m not welcome at (eg SunnySideUp). It does get old defending that you aren’t a bandwagon fan all the time, and when words just get twisted around so I’m holding 2007 against the NFL, I don’t get the point of saying anything at all. I’m sure it’s a problem with my interpersonal skills, and I try to work on that, as interacting with strangers on the internet is a new thing, esp ones I can’t tell if they are joking or serious most of the time so I have to guess at how vigorous a defense to put up. I guess I do have a thin skin when it’s people I don’t know, and I care about what people think of me… and thats all a me problem.

No one in my family was into sports, and I didn’t get into them till I started playing at age 9ish.
Tell me GC, is that a harmless joke? Or a genuine dig at that I enjoy the routine of every night I get home and check the Sox score, and that for half of each year, it’s been a constant part of an otherwise dynamic existence? I take that as a serious shot, and if it’s just bc I’m thin-skinned, I’d like some help interpreting, for the future…
July 19th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
Butters like basketball more than me. He can be resident Bulls fan mayor. Even if he does live in the land of cheese and cheer for the Packers.
I will require an exchange for the rights of Adam Burish’s friendship to make this transaction complete though.
