David Ortiz’s Backswing Caught This Umpire in the Mask, Prompting Him to Curse
Actually, these were my exact words Sunday when Japan scored in the 117th minute to tie the Women’s World Cup soccer game. I also said these words when I looked at the MLB standings this morning to see the Pirates half a game back of the Brewers in the NL Central. If prompted, I could probably name more Pirates from the 1991 team than the 2011 squad.

Why?
July 18th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
HGH!
July 18th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
Wouldn’t the average fan prefer the Pirates or Brewers over the Reds or Cards in the postseason? I’m biased, but that would be my guess…
July 18th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
More Pirates, less Pujols for me!
July 18th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
can someone quote Ortiz for those of us unable to watch the video?
July 18th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
I’m certainly rooting for the Pirates.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:23 AM

It wasn’t Ortiz… it was the umpire. He said “Son of a bitch.” Nothing crazy or anything. Don’t know why everyone gets so bent out of shape for a little language on TV. If I were a parent, I’d be more offended by the fact that Teen Moms is actually a show than if my kid heard shit or son of a bitch on some other show.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
I’m guessing because it completely fucks the contraction master plan from a couple years back.
shit, I’m a Cardinals fan and I love the Pirates being up there.

I’m obviously biases as well but I would think so. Plus if I was a fan of Philly/SF/whatever other playoff team I’d much rather go to Pittsburgh or Milkwaukee over Cincy or St. Louis.

I think average fan would prefer Cards, as they are a household name with a superstar in pujols. Baseball traditionalists would prefer Pirates/Brewers.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
Haven’t you guys learned? TBL is a star fucker. The only players he can name in the central division are probably pujols, fielder and braun. He wanted to contract the pirates, didn’t he?
July 18th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
I’m certainly rooting for the Pirates.
Most Pirates fans cheered for the Cubs a few years back when they acquired half of the Pirates at the trade deadline.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Isn’t the NL Central 1-15 in the postseason since 2007? Pretty sure Philly/SF just want to be matched up with the NL-C winner in the NLDS.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
Isn’t the NL Central 1-15
We have the cubs and Cardinals to thank for that. Brewers with the lone win! Against the future champs too.

I meant go to in the travel sense but yes the NL Central sucks in the playoffs.

As in as a fan I’d rather go to those cities over Cincy/St. Louis. Oi vey I’m having trouble this morning.

Did Ortiz’s son immediately start to imitate that swing poorly using one of his stuffed animals as a stand in for the umpire?

Where are you headed in WI Dixon?
July 18th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
I love it that the Pirates are making waves this year. They are finally fun to watch again. I don’t know much about their farm system, but I am hoping that they have some more young guys in the system ready to come up and keep them a legit contender for the next few years.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
Toddlers and Tiaras. Never seen an episode or commercial, but I see it on my TV guide and know exactly what it is.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
Not sure I understand this. You don’t like seeing the little peon of the NL finally have a shot at making the playoffs, when you’ve root for the weak, little brother of New York football your entire life.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
They have some really good pitchers should they develop well coming up in the next 3 years or so.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Where are you headed in WI Dixon?
Oshkosh for the air show. I’ve actually been to WI a few times. In 05 for a Steelers/Packers game and Milwaukee a few years ago for a work thing.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
The mic was hot last night, as someone on the Rays popped one up enabling us to hear him go “GOD DAMNIT! FUCK!!”
I thought the Pirates were waste of spaces that were contracted?
July 18th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
Would anyone like to know how to build muscles in their 50s?
Or are those muscles on that Incredible Hulk-looking guy REAL or FAKE?
Key questions in these uncertain days.

Toddlers and Tiaras. Never seen an episode or commercial, but I see it on my TV guide and know exactly what it is.
Seen a commercial several times and that’s all I need to see. These girls are going to hate getting older. I see a prescription drug addiction in many of their futures.

Nice. I was up there 2 years ago (I think) when the A380 made an appearance. That was a big motherfucker.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
well, I can’t speak for the average fan, but I’d guess the Brewers fans would be pissed their #1 PRPC team is about to be passed by the #14 PRPC team.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:39 AM

Good for you. I can name the entire starting lineup of the ’86, ’96, and ’99 Astros. We all have our party tricks.

whoa, early reports are an 8.6 rating for the Women’s World Cup game
http://twitter.com/#!/AustinKarp/statuses/92965590330912768
apparently, that topped the 2010 World Series

commence anger for ratings, let’s hear how meaningless they are!
July 18th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
or, save the ratings anger for the actual post in an hour
July 18th, 2011 at 10:41 AM

Without context they are meaningless. But I dare say for you, TBL, that that is an inconvenient truth.

I’ve never been to an airshow and I’m not an aviation buff but I’m looking forward to it. I also know someone else going who is a pilot and has a small plane that I get to probably ride around in so that should be fun.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
rabble rabble! that guy with the terrible post about espys meaning soccer is #1 was right!
that should be fun.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
do people besides the EIC really care all that much about ratings? just curious.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
@ms621
How have the Astros lost 64 game this year? They aren’t the most talented team in the league but I think they have enough to be a middle of the road team this year.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:44 AM

Smacks forehead.
I’m can’t wait to see what the ratings for women’s soccer will be in October.
Wait… women’s soccer is irrelevant for the next 3 years, 11 months.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Only when Duffy compares them out of context from the Gold Cup to that of the Stanley Cup Finals and doesn’t even use the correct numbers from hockey (even though the comparison could not have been more incomparable). Only then do I care.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:46 AM

I’m assuming people who get to keep their jobs based on a flawed system of determining how healthy a sport is care. But I (and I think most commenters here) certainly don’t.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
wonder what the british open ratings were like…can’t find anything tho.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
context is in the eye of the beholder. if you hate women’s soccer, or soccer in general, this # is crap, means nothing.
if you like soccer, or think this was a big deal, you will think the # means a lot.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
I watched the replay of the Open at the same time the soccer game was on live. women’s soccer fan interest is through the roof though.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
Remember after 1999 when they thought they were capitalizing on something big when they started up that professional women’s soccer league that folded like five years later? When people can’t wave their American flags around they realize it’s just soccer so they stop caring
I gave up on this baseball game in the 12th inning I think, what time did that marathon end?
July 18th, 2011 at 10:48 AM

Brett Myers went from having a near career year last season to being very average and hittable this year. On the outings in which he’s been good, he’s gotten no run support. Same for Wandy Rodriguez who has been decent at home but seems to be allergic to quality road pitching. Carlos Lee is a year older and his swing is slower. Outside of him, Hunter Pence, Michael Bourn, and to a lesser extent Jeff Keppinger, we have no real offense to speak of. Brett Wallace has shown flashes of greatness, but is still wildly inconsistent and is a very streaky hitter. Chris Johnson has not been good this year. At all. He started off in a slump and has recovered somewhat, but nowhere near what he was last year. The back end of our rotation, especially Happ, have been underachieving. Lyles is getting no run support or defense, and the coup de grace of all of this is that our bullpen has been an unmitigated disaster.
That’s how they’ve lost 64.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
12:43. I fell asleep in the 15th. Ended an inning later. Rays kept swinging at everything. They were destined to lose that game. I think from the 9th inning on, the Red Sox had one inning where they threw more than 8 pitches.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
I can’t stand women;s soccer or soccer in general but I watched both world cups and rooted pretty hard for the US in both of them. I also watched the Gold Cup final between USA and Mexico. Outside of that I can’t stand the sport.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:50 AM

No, that’s spinning the facts to support one’s opinion.
Context is that the World Series is 4-7 games long and that prior to the Brazil match 90% of the U.S. didn’t know the Women’s World Cup was even occurring. Salient wins tend to attract attention over the long run, particularly when there is no OTAs or minicamps going on in football and baseball is just getting back from the All Star Break.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
Sunday ratings for the Open: 2.6 (at least what i saw).
Up from a 2.1 last year.
one guy on twitter attributed it to Phil’s push (if not for church, i would have tuned in; by the time i got home after church/errands, Phil was out of the mix)
July 18th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
It means every four years when Team USA is in the final people will tune in, if you want to believe it means soccer is the next big thing in this country you can just copy and paste articles that have been written going back to the 70s
July 18th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
all you need to know: The starters held the mashing Red Sox in check 2 out of 3 games. The bullpen came in and melted down.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
context is in the eye of the beholder.
Up next, TBL compares ratings for an NFL regular season game (1 of 16) to a MLB regular season game (1 of 162) and declares football the more popular sport.
(I think football is more popular, obviously, but comparing ratings of regular season games in MLB and the NFL is just as absurd as comparing the ratings for the WWC and the World Series.)
July 18th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
but isn’t part of the context that it was the US that was in the finals? if the finals had been Japan and anyone else do you think ratings would have even been half of what they were? people love ‘Merican sports, especially on the international scene. that is the context I am looking at.

Also some of Houston’s managerial decisions seem….odd.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
not bad…were the women’s final ratings for the US only or globally? because the ratings in the UK are usually pretty robust.

Ha. I hope Phil read the bible. Otherwise he just lost a fan.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:57 AM

True, but Mills is just working with what he has. Which is not much. He will get blamed for this though it’s Wade’s fault for some of his half-baked signings and even more than that it’s McLane’s fault for micro-managing the team and refusing to sign draft picks if they asked for what he thought was too much. And it’s McLane’s fault for hiring Wade who is a ‘yes man’.
Next season we’ll be going in a new direction. I don’t see Wade lasting much into the off season and Mills will not be retained after his contract runs out after the season. Though my preference would be to see Wade go and Mills stay.
July 18th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Around this time next year, gymnastics and swimming ratings are gonna be HUGE and it will be a game changer for both sports! You heard it here first.
