Japan Wins 2011 World Cup On Penalty Kicks
All, Soccer, Women's Sports, World Cup July 17th. 2011, 5:26pm
Alex Morgan gave the USA a 1-0 lead in the second half. Japan came back with an Ayay Miyama goal. Morgan again made a huge play with a perfect pass to Abby Wambach in overtime. Homare Sawa evened the game again to send it to penalty kicks. Japan won on PKs as team USA struggled. Our nation weeps as we have come in second place in our new favorite sport.

Carli Lloyd can come over to my house if she needs consoling
July 17th, 2011 at 5:30 PM
The only good to come out of this is if Alex Morgan gets really
emotional and decides to do Hustler, otherwise all is lost.
July 17th, 2011 at 5:32 PM
Horse shit.
July 17th, 2011 at 5:33 PM
People talk about solo and morgan. But lloyd is underrated.
July 17th, 2011 at 5:33 PM
This was fun. Be back in 4 years.
July 17th, 2011 at 5:35 PM
Ridiculous that they dont have sudden death overtime, thats how we do things in ‘merica. Penalty kicks are weak.
July 17th, 2011 at 5:38 PM
This was a massive choke job by USA. Make no mistake, they were the favorite to win this trophy. I don’t see how soccer fans in this country can even look back at this tournament in good lights.
July 17th, 2011 at 5:43 PM
It’s called Denial
July 17th, 2011 at 5:46 PM
Good thing I don’t believe in karma. Funny how the USA lost in the exact manner they defeated Brazil. After all of you killed the refereeing in what was a game mostly called in the US favor.
That’s so ironic. You all crucified the refs, despite the win….now what?
July 17th, 2011 at 5:50 PM
Tobin Heath was not the reason US lost the match. People easily forget about the 50 missed chances in the first 15″ of play.
July 17th, 2011 at 5:51 PM

I don’t see how Germans can look back at the last 75 years in good lights.

Trolls are out in force this afternoon.
July 17th, 2011 at 5:52 PM
#facepalm
July 17th, 2011 at 5:53 PM
If it’s a real game, and not just some “Oh look you made it to the finals of your little tournament!” game, then nobody should.
July 17th, 2011 at 5:55 PM
Why the long face?
July 17th, 2011 at 5:58 PM
I’m afraid it’s still a “orange slice” game for most journalists and general public. They’ll pat them on the back and move on.

My personal favorite variation of that joke involves Sarah Jessica Parker

Serves them right for wearing those stupid jersey’s
Is that a zipper??
July 17th, 2011 at 6:08 PM
The call today was in the 120 th minute And was a good call. Refs did a fantastic job today.
The garbage in the Brazil game changed the last 28 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of OT. No comparison
This was a great game where the US came out on the short end. I thought their defense looked gassed before overtime. Unfortunately, I was right. Congrats to Japan who needed something like this in the worst way.
And, find the male version of Abby now. That is a true striker!
July 17th, 2011 at 6:09 PM
Is that the Tabasco guy from Curb your Enthusiasm?
July 17th, 2011 at 6:09 PM
Yeah no shit. Landon Donovan is a bitch. Abby’s awesome. I actually enjoyed rooting for the girls.
July 17th, 2011 at 6:12 PM
Tobin Heath was not the reason US lost the match.
No. Tobin lost when her parents named her Tobin.
I’m a soccer fan way off to the side observer. I don’t know shit compared to you all that follow it religiously. I can not get my mind wrapped around settling a tie by in a major tournament by the kicks at the end*. It seems to me that it’d be like the NBA Playoffs being decided on free throws or the Super Bowl being decided by field goals. It is my problem and I own it. I just think a sudden death overtime would be more dramatic and fitting.
*No clue what those are called.
/goes back to waiting for the Breaking Bad premiere this evening. I enjoyed the game today.

World Cup victories cure radiation poisoning now? Enough with the “sporting events make natural disasters go away” angle.
July 17th, 2011 at 6:15 PM
Events broadcasted on ESPN cure everything.
July 17th, 2011 at 6:16 PM
The vast majority of the Japan players looked like men. I bet some of them were!
July 17th, 2011 at 6:20 PM
I mean, good for japan and all, but this victory isn’t bringing 17K back from the dead.
July 17th, 2011 at 6:30 PM
The comparison between ending the world cup on penalty shits and the NBA settling the finals with free throws is not an apt comparison. A soccer match is twice as long as an NBA game, to say nothing of the 30 minutes of overtime played today, and is played in the heat, rain, and cold. The game is more physically draining and to keep playing would weaken the product on the field and put the player’s fitness at risk.
A better comparison is how college football deals with overtime: it’s all about offense and ultimately one side has to make a stop.
/off to dinner
July 17th, 2011 at 6:31 PM
Penalty shits? I swear that was autocorrected….
July 17th, 2011 at 6:33 PM
with Badger, Vlad, Hot Sauce, etc …
I just don’t get the “healing” angle to the Japan win.
Sounds good, but not sure if i buy it.
People compared it to the Saints winning the SB post-Katrina.
Still don’t get it.

Much better analogy. Thank you.

It gives the people in those locals where a horrible disaster has shat on their lives and this win gives them a short period of joy. It doesn’t cure the tsunami’s effects. The win gives them something for Japan or New Orleans to smile about for a brief moment.
Oh. the Diamondbacks won the World Series. I get it now.
July 17th, 2011 at 6:55 PM
I buy that. It’s not like there’s a good option. I guess they gotta end the game somehow. Also Golden Goal should apply to overtime.
July 17th, 2011 at 6:56 PM
Ha, on that pretty great HBO documentary about that World Series I was willing to take the family members of 9/11 victims interviewed at their word when they said that the Yankees’ run provided brief periods of escape so even the cynic in me sees how stuff like this can be beneficial
July 17th, 2011 at 6:56 PM
What this tournament showed is that Americans will get behind anything when their winning. The amount of people who jumped on this bandwagon was ridiculous. It’s women’s football FFS! Stop acting as if it actually means something. Can you all please go back to not giving a damn?
Thanks.
July 17th, 2011 at 6:57 PM
I love the play by the play guy on Univision, by the “way”. “Gol gol gol gol gol gol gol golazo golazo golazo golazo AZO AZO AZO.”

I grew up from second grade all the way through forever in Greensburg, Kansas. After the tornado, at some point, there was the recovery period. It involved friends and family against each other in deciding what to do in rebuilding the town. The boys high school hoops team made State the next year and the town was for the most part, galvinized. Sports work well in stressful times after disaster. To dismiss that, is short-sighted, although I understand how others would disagree if they’ve never been through some disaster. I don’t understand how folks that lived in NYC in 2001 can argue against that. Had the Yankees won the Series, we’d still be hearing about how that win healed the country.
July 17th, 2011 at 7:09 PM
I’ll get a first hand look at that this fall. Of course nobody’s even been back to Tuscaloosa since the tornado, but the Tide are actually returning some starters on defense this season.

Watching 60 minutes… So who wants to go to Mexico!?
July 17th, 2011 at 7:42 PM
Still don’t get it.
people look for solace in things when they are bereft. Little victories they can share in. Like this one (or the Saints winning).
It’s easy to understand. Does it literally heal a nation? No. That’s just bullshit sportswriting. But if you are saying you literally do not understand the concept, I’ll remind you when you dole out similar schmaltz later in the year.
July 17th, 2011 at 8:00 PM
Happy as hell Hope Solo lost the thing on penalty kicks. Remember at the last World Cup where she publicly buried both the former coach and Briana Scurry because Solo didn’t get the start against Brazil, who ended up crushing the US? Turnabout is fairplay.
I do think that because women’s soccer is not something that fans can hate on athletes with as much vile as other sports (like flop-happy men’s soccer, the NBA or the NFL), this actually may get swept under the rug (especially with Japan’s feel-good story after all the grief they’ve had to endure). But payback’s a bitch, Hope Solo. The soccer gods just waited four years to make sure you got yours.
For some reason, I’m having lot of trouble on Youtube finding the videos of those infamous quotes, but I found a couple.

The “healing a nation” angle is just a good story. It is silly to unpack it and inquire into its literal, real-world impact. All sports narratives are bullshit. Finding that the bullshit is actually bullshit? Misguided quest.
It’s a good story.
July 17th, 2011 at 8:42 PM
Living in the DC area, the Redskins are probably the biggest bonding mechanicism in an extremely diverse region. I know the mood on a Monday morning is affected during the season based on a Skins win or loss a good deal. It’s easy to see how a sporting event brings on good feelings in a region. Anyone who was around in 80 knows what Lake Placid did to the entire country.
July 17th, 2011 at 8:43 PM
Yes. Let’s not over analyze the “healing” part. For a few hours, everyone in the country put all the differences aside and root for a common cause. I think that’s pretty cool. Is that going to bring back the dead or fix the economy? Of course not. But what’s wrong with a nation finding little bit of joy out of sports. Who is it hurting?
July 17th, 2011 at 8:48 PM
Just hurting the brains of people who can’t think outside the box….

i think most of us understand a local team bringing joy to the downtrodden. what we (or at least I) rail against is the media’s grasping and clinging to it and mentioning it at every turn. and while observers may not think actual ‘healing’ can get done, the producers/announcers in fact do say this over and over.
better stories draw more eyeballs. the cynic in me can’t let go of that

As far as I know veetle is a plug-in for viewing streaming video. It’s always worked pretty well for me. Apparently it has a website too: http://www.veetle.com/

If TBL really doesn’t get what the Saints winning the SB meant for the city and fans (myself, makblunt, breesus, bffredo), I really just feel sorry for him. I hope he may some day find the kind catharsis and exultation that went for us during that whole run.
July 18th, 2011 at 2:08 AM
I have to think TBL is not as dumb as his blogger persona makes him seem. Otherwise, how can I justify spending so much time here? The commenters are good, but not that good.
Holy shit was Harry Potter 7.2 (7.5?) cathartic.
July 18th, 2011 at 11:39 AM
Buehler blew it. Gave up Sawa’s header by giving her a clear path to the goal….and didn’t clear the ball by hitting it low and towards the goal instead of up and away.
