What Was ESPN Thinking Suspending College Football Writer Bruce Feldman?
Boy did this one blow up in ESPN’s face.
Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach recently released a book, Swing Your Sword, that was co-authored by ESPN’s Bruce Feldman. Feldman is one of ESPN’s most respected college football writers and had previously written a well-reviewed college football book. It appears as if – though ESPN refuses to confirm it – Feldman was given permission by ESPN suits to write the book. Well, excerpts of the book hit the internet this week … and now Feldman has reportedly been suspended indefinitely by ESPN. Last night and this morning, ESPN has refused to comment.
Some background: Leach turned Texas Tech into a power in 2008, rising to No. 2 in the rankings after knocking off No. 1 Texas (Tech finished the year 11-2). The following year, Leach was fired by Texas Tech, and at the center of his exit was one of his players, wide receiver Adam James. He is the son of ESPN announcer Craig James. It got nasty. Between James talking about it on ESPN and Leach firing back – “he was acting like a Little League dad” – the saga turned ugly for everyone involved (especially ESPN, which handled the firing poorly when it aired the Alamo Bowl game days after the story broke).
In 2010, Leach decided to sue ESPN. If I had to guess, ESPN’s going to hide behind this as a reason for Feldman’s suspension – Feldman spent time with Leach, and Leach is suing us, so we were told by our lawyers to muzzle him until this book release blows over. In the 5+ years this blog has been around, I’ve found ESPN to be a thin-skinned operation … but they couldn’t possibly be so foolish as to suspend Feldman for writing a book he was given permission to write, right? And ESPN couldn’t be so petty as to suspend Feldman over what was in the book about one of his colleagues, right?
ESPN’s Joe Schad was just spewing this stuff that Craig James and Spaeth Communications were feeding him: “Alleged electrical closet” … “Alleged electrical closet” … “YouTube video of Adam James in the alleged electrical closet is available” … “I’m told the alleged electrical closet is approximately 4 x 10 feet.”
Then “SportsCenter” showed Adam’s YouTube video from the electrical closet. Too bad they never said Adam went in that electrical closet after he was specifically told not to go in there.
Swing Your Sword will no doubt get a nice little bump from the Feldman controversy.

I can’t wait for the day when ESPN actually has a network that competes with it so it’s not my only option for sports programming. ESPN’s like FoxNews, only there’s no NPR to listen to as an alternative to their bullshit.

The internal rumblings is what I want to know more about. Saw several tweets from people last night saying that they received text messages from ESPN employees that were shocked, appalled and other variations of that emotion about Bruce’s suspension.
Put on that press hat and get us some mutiny quotes, TBL!

I honestly can’t recall the last time I watched anything other than College Football or the NFL on ESPN. Haven’t watched an entire Sportscenter in years, and don’t get me started on the various round table shows of out-shouting.

Not unless hockey steps out of the niche sport arena. They won’t be able to pry the NFL from FOX/CBS/NBC nor do they have any basketball programming.
Versus is staked in hockey and some college football programming, mostly the MWC and Pac-12. NBC has hockey, golf and the Olympics. They need to pick up one of the other 3 sports. Baseball seems like the most available one since there are so many games.
Also not an expert, but that’s my opinion.
July 15th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
that’s pretty much were i’m at with ESPN. the last non live sporting event broadcast i tuned in to watch was baseball tonight, but i have no need since MLBN has far superior analysis and highlights.
even with their live sporting events i normally watch on mute or very low volume.

Oh I haven’t either.. .the last time I watched more than 3 minutes of Sportscenter was probably over 5 years ago… and I don’t watch the screaming heads. I used to watch BBTN, but that’s really gone downhill since MLB Network started up. I just hate that MLB, NFL, and NBA are all on ESPN so you’re forced to go there for the live stuff too.

I’m looking forward to reading the juicy parts of this book online and then not buying the book.
July 15th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
There’s plenty of NFL (Thurs Night?) to go around, not to mention college sports. Tough to see them getting any traction with the NBA or MLB unless Turner and Fox backout, something I can’t see either doing.
July 15th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
The angle right now that I’m as much interested in is the complete lack of response by ESPN in this instanteous twitter world. They had to know it would get out quickly, and they should have had a response ready. And if they couldn’t have a decent one because it is complete bullshit, well, that’s an issue.
Instead, nothing. It’s either hubris or idiocy. This isn’t going away quickly. It’s hit a nerve with the contrast of ESPN’s promotion/hype machine vs journalism, Bruce is popular, and every non-ESPN journalist has a voice and isn’t going to let it go quietly.

To answer your question from a person that I was talking to recently. This person who was recently appointed to a high position at NBC sports after the previous employee resign. He had one short answer YES. Dont be suprised if you see a large amount of money be thrown at Big East Basketball. The statement as told to me ” if we “NBC” do not get it and other sports, ESPN will have to pay a lot of money

* head scratch *. What am I missing here?
July 15th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
I agree that the suspension seems unjust. And ESPN isn’t making it’s side of the story known. But I’m skeptical of how this has any meaningful affect on the bottom line? Even with the social media circles we all belong to blowing up. Just seems like an echo chamber to me that seems bigger than it really is.
Any chance Feldman’s writing pissed off a big time ESPN partner? (looking for an angle other than the James one)
We know ESPN reacts swiftly when an employee does something like that.

While I completely agree that the overwhelming majority of the “expert analysis” on ESPN is pure garbage, I’m just happy that I can watch a basketball, football, baseball, or soccer game just about every night on one of their channels. I do wonder, however, why Yahoo is able to break all of the important stories on shady dealings while ESPN doesn’t . . .
July 15th, 2011 at 10:43 AM

July 15th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
if you really are woindering this
I wasn’t.

Interesting.
July 15th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
Feldman should have been suspended for how often he’s been wrong about the supposed rapture that’s coming for Ohio State. (he guaranteed lack of institutional control…which he was completely wrong about)
July 15th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Yahoo Sports specifically pushed a lot of money into investigative journalism, whereas ESPN wouldn’t dare do such a thing because it might piss off the rights holders.
Also, ESPN has Andy Katz, Joe Schad, and John Clayton that can go on an espn channel and “exclusively break” whatever Yahoo reported 2 days earlier.
July 15th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
While the desire to have another channel compete with ESPN (Versus/NBC/Comcast) is noble, it is likely that that channel will simply turn into a carbon copy of ESPN and everything we hate about it.
July 15th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
Which is precisely why a guy like Feldman working for ESPN is likely a mismatch.

I don’t think that there will ever be a network that specifically goes up against ESPN. The only chance is to have the League channels themselves like NFL, MLB, and NBA TV slowly chip away at the WWL. Counter that with Big10, ACC, and SEC TV channels as well and it slowly but surely brings down the beast.
I am just an average joe though, I eagerly anticipate the post where “Experts” like Barry Janoff can break this down for me.
July 15th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
I don’t think that there will ever be a network that specifically goes up against ESPN.
there already was, probably 10 years ago now. It fell flat on its head, and cost Turner a bunch of money. That was pre- Time Warner/AOL Turner, too.
They did a sportscenter show nearly all the time, because they had no sports at all to air.
July 15th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Nothing is going to change. ESPN owns rights to SEC games, the BCS and some Big 10 games as well as the Pac 12 and now the Faghorn Network. If you are a college football fan you can’t NOT watch ESPN for their live game coverage. It’s a sad reality.
July 15th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
I, too, was amused by this comment.
Please explain.
July 15th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
To me this should be just another affirmation that ESPN long ago ceased being capable of providing reliable, objective analysis of sports. As a public company we know what ultimately the job of the company is, but if you’re a smart consumer and sports fan you should understand what you are getting when you go there. Live sports (generally done well) and bullshit.
July 15th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
there already was, probably 10 years ago now.
Yeah I guess I should have worded it better in that no network will ever be the same format as ESPN and get big enough to be a rival.
July 15th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
Maybe ESPN is looking to generate some discussion by allowing Feldman to write the book then suspending him.

July 15th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
I want to care about this. It sounds like an injustice and I hate that. But I can’t make myself care for some reason. Maybe it’s because the whole thing with Adam James is a farce. Leach was going to get fired by Kent Hance one way or the other, and James was merely the vehicle they selected. And implying negligence as a coach meant they didn’t have to pay him either. That’s all this is about; money. And I can’t make myself care about some coach whose 15 minutes of fame are up and a network which has developed a monumentally bad tin ear to public opinion.
July 15th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
I agree with sportsdork in comment 49.
July 15th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Live sports (generally done well) and bullshit.
I think that is the only thing I watch on ESPN anymore. I tune in for the live coverage and turn it off when the “news” comes on.
July 15th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
ESPN pumps Schad down CFB fans’ throats as a true reporter. He’s not a features writer or anything like that, but a news breaker. Now we find out that he was used as a mouthpiece for James and Texas Tech’s propaganda against Leach. If he’s used as a mouthpiece here, where else is being used as such? After his botched stuff during last summer’s expansion talk and this, I think his credibility is shot, at least in my eyes.

He was TERRIBLE on those expansion talks. His sources were playing him like a pretty college freshman at a frathouse.
July 15th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
I hope Leach wins his lawsuits against TTU and ESPN. I didn’t think it was possible for ESPN to botch the James story more than they already have. Craig James is the one that should be suspended or fired. The way he used ESPN to manipulate the story early on was awful.

Ha! He grabs his right ear EVERY TIME he begins to chuckle. Never fails.

And EVERY story involves politics, even the ones about “5 unusual ways to use kitchen staples”

ATL, here’s the story about the potential Texas plates which are being pushed by the Sons of Confederate Veterans:
Ha.. that’s unreal. The funny thing is… when I think of the confederacy, I really don’t think of Texas. Those specialized plates must be cash cows…. there’s about 50 in GA… even for out of state schools. I find it odd that a GA plate has the University of Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, Alabama, NC, etc specialty plates. You’d think they’d want to exclusively endorse only GA state schools. I can’t imagine seeing a UMichigan or UMinnesota specialty plate in WI.

Thats unfortunate. I’d rather see Paul get the nod over Romney, Bachmann and Palin. Even Perry would be a better candidate but I’m sure he’s too “religious” for some by wanting a National Day of Prayer or Texas Day of Prayer..I can’t remember. I need to do some more research on all of them

Fort Hood is in Texas because John Bell Hood gained his fame for leading the Texas Brigade, even though he only led them briefly.

You’re right, but that Bucky plate is pretty badass. I want it.

Tennessee has a bunch of different schools (Auburn, Clemson, FSU, etc) but I looked at Ohio and MI and WI, and none of them has out-of-state schools at all.

We have U of SCarolina plates in PA. Just had to get a minimum number of people (I think it was 25) commit for D.O.T. to make the plates.

If I ever move back there, I’d definitely consider getting one of those. I see they have Brewers specialty plates now too… those must be new.. they didn’t have them a few years ago.

i want that specialty plate with the old school brewers logo on it and i don’t care if im not from wisconsin or live there.

I am wishing I had the Mass plates with Sox/Pats, to hang on the wall, but I never registered a car there, though I could have for a while.

That’s how it is in GA too.. you need a certain number of people, and then that group pays a fee, etc. etc. I think it’s purely do to the large transplant population. WI doesn’t have many… that’s why they don’t have any out of state schools (I’m assuming anyways) TN and GA do… The SC plates in PA is odd… do a lot of SC alumns move up to Philly?

Spencer I’m sure you’ve done this before, but I’m lazy. Can you come up with top 5 (or 10) lists of best players to not win a major, for anyone who has a remote chance (so Kenny Perry could qualify since he almost won the Masters a couple years ago)

1. Sergioooooooooo

TN has a large number of transplants. It’s strange in a lot of ways, and the demographics change greatly in each area based on where people come from.
I do like the classic MB/glove logo. I just carved that into a small wooden baseball bat (and the socks Sox logo into the other) and am trying to figure out what to do with them now.
July 15th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
2. Stricker
3. Westwood
July 15th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
We average about 80-100 people for our football viewing parties in Philly. As for a lot of SC alums moving up here, it’s actually more a case of NJ and PA being huge feeder states for SC. Any given year at SC, there are more students from NJ and PA than any other state other than SC.
July 15th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
My list would be 1)Westwood, 2)Stricker, 3)Donald, 4)DJohnson, 5)Sergio (with regrets to omitting Watney)
July 15th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
1. lee westwood
2. luke donald
3. stricker
4. kj choi
5. sergio (laugh all you want, he’s got loads of good major finishes)
6. dustin johnson
7. nick watney
8. paul casey
9. robert allenby
10. henrik stenson
July 15th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
i guess matt kuchar could be on there too…and casey should probably be above watney and DJ. stenson can get taken off.
July 15th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Well that confirms my thought which was basically that Donald and Westwood are both due and at some point need to win a British*
I mean “The Open Championship”
July 15th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Sergio has no business on that list right now. It looks like his game is getting better, as his finish in the US Open would attest. But, until he gets back to what he was before his mental meltdowns (Waggle, Waggle, Waggle), there’s no way I would include him before Johnson or Watney or Casey.
Westie, Donald, and Stricker are definites. Casey and Choi are good calls to round out the top 5. Those guys have been there, win tournaments, and are legit threats almost every week that they tee it up.
July 15th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
I notice that Jeff Maggert is absent of that list?
July 15th, 2011 at 12:03 PM
you should prolly start paying more attention brah…sergio’s got the best two major finishes out of johnson, watney or casey.
