Does The South Produce More Top Lineman Because Everyone Is Bigger Down There?
Is it any coincidence that the fattest states also produce the greatest number of top lineman? Perhaps, but it’s a coincidence worth mentioning. Let’s compare this Sports Illustrated piece from January about lineman from the South and this graphic from The Daily that highlights the fattest states. First, we’ll let SI point out that many of the large, talented football players we watch on Saturdays are from Southern states.
There is a region that produces a higher percentage of elite defensive linemen, and anyone who has watched the past five BCS title games should have an idea where to point on the map. Think back to who made the biggest plays in those games — all of which were won by a team from the SEC.
(Note: ESS EEE SEE Speed)
Except for Moss (Texas) and Harvey (Maryland), all played their high school football in the region commonly known as the deep South. McDonald is from Belle Glade, Fla. Dorsey is from Gonzales, La. Dunlap is from North Charleston, S.C. Dareus is from Huffman, Ala. Fairley is from Mobile, Ala.
(I love how Texas doesn’t count as the “deep South.” As a native of New York I’m conditioned to believe everything below Washington D.C. is the South.)
Now, if we look at this fun graphic from The Daily, you’ll notice that many of the fattest states in America are also in the South. The “fattest states in America” are Mississippi, Alabama, West Virginia, Tennessee and Louisiana.
More from SI:
Despite the fact that the region accounts for only 22.1 percent of the nation’s population, 43 percent of the NFL’s defensive linemen went to high school in the following 10 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Is it any coincidence that the states with the biggest people produce the highest number of big people who play football? The south is a hotbed for football so it makes sense that a high percentage of players will come from the region. The fact that their diets might be a little less healthy could be turning linebackers into linemen.

Don’t know why, I have only read the title to this post and it made me laugh.

The answer is: More than likely yes.
July 12th, 2011 at 5:21 PM
How do you know everyone from the South is “bigger down there?”
July 12th, 2011 at 5:21 PM

guy i know is ‘bulking up’ and dipping into supplements/shakes but not using roids. said his personal trainer told him that if you see guys whose arms look kind of stiff or unnatural (ie, kind of frozen) when they walk, they’re more than likely on roids.
anyone else hear this theory?
July 12th, 2011 at 5:26 PM
I don’t really understand this without knowing what % of ‘smaller’ positions went to school in the South. I assume it’s less?
July 12th, 2011 at 5:26 PM
I’m more interested in why all the funny, creative people come from KC. You’ve got Sudeikis, Riggle, Rudd, and that guy who wrote that one piece on Grantland that I had never heard of before.
July 12th, 2011 at 5:28 PM
Agreed that the South is littered with fat assholes.
July 12th, 2011 at 5:28 PM
There is the Deep South, the South, the Outer South.
July 12th, 2011 at 5:28 PM
(I love how Texas doesn’t count as the “deep South.” As a native of New York I’m conditioned to believe everything below Washington D.C. is the South.)
Go through Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana and then drive through central Texas. It’s not the Deep South at all.
East Texas is like the rest of the south, the Panhandle is like the midwest and Great Plains, the western half of the state is like the Southwest (New Mexico and Arizona), and central Texas is like no place else in this country. It’s an entity unto itself.
July 12th, 2011 at 5:29 PM
No, but it makes sense…and your boy is definitely on roids.
July 12th, 2011 at 5:30 PM
Why do so many top QBs come from Western PA?

Plus, both the obesity epidemic and athleticism can in many ways be tied to race – another contributing factor to athletic D-linemen.
July 12th, 2011 at 5:31 PM
The south like the country fried southern style food, which happens to be my favorite. So these numbers don’t really surprise me. Not everyone is cut out to eat like vegans from the Pac NW.

July 12th, 2011 at 5:32 PM
I would suspect that the diet down here helps get guys who have the frame for the weight to fill out better. We also have more players down here, thus making the chances of producing better players more likely.
July 12th, 2011 at 5:32 PM
Did you check his balls, TBL?

I don’t understand this diet argument. Nowadays, football players, etc. are aware of the diet, exercise, etc. it takes to get big as far back as middle school. Protein shakes and the like are made of the same stuff everywhere.

July 12th, 2011 at 5:38 PM
What is hard about seeing how fat people are down here? Then go look at the average DT in a 5-A school in the South. He’s not in shape. He’s fat. Eating all of the shit we eat down here contributes to that. I’m not talking about muscle. A good bit of DTs that come into colleges down here shed tons of fat and add muscle when they hit the weight-training programs teams have to offer.
July 12th, 2011 at 5:38 PM
This. But…fuck New Mexico. That place is gross.

Eh, it’s not that bad. The Taos and Cimarron areas are pretty nice.
July 12th, 2011 at 5:38 PM
I think some of those states just produce more athletes. Georgia, for instance, produces a very large number of baseball players. Same goes for Florida in football. The majority of the so-called skill position players on these SEC teams that win BCS titles are also from these same states. In short, I think you have a correlation, but that’s not indicative of causation.
July 12th, 2011 at 5:39 PM
I just typed in “Thebiglead” and Stephen and Duffy came up. Then I looked and saw a lot of people in their ‘circles’ or their friends circles that had avatars or names I recognized.

it was great. hot as shit the day I got up there for the Twins-Brewers game, and the 2 hour rain delay didn’t help after driving all day. but other than that, no complaints. I golfed in 88 degree weather with no humidity and barely broke a sweat.
but holy shit I forgot how nasty the bugs get up there. I about got carried off by the fuckers, even with spray on.

The simple truth is more people are moving south and more people play football down here. Also, there are more black people down here, and if you look at any football team, the more black guys that start, the better they are.
/yeah, I said it
July 12th, 2011 at 5:44 PM
true, but the 5 hour drive through a trailer park wasteland to get there is awful. I’m probably a bad one to listen to though, it’s I-40 about the whole way, through okrahoma and then the panhandle of Texas, then to N Mexico. it’s bad when the Big Texan is like a beacon in the distance.
July 12th, 2011 at 5:44 PM
Just activated an invite today and have been playing around with it. I like it so far more than Facebook from whatI can see. I like the circle idea, and the click and drag is nice to work with. We’ll see if it catches on, but so far it seems to be a hit.

Yeah… mosquitos… do not miss. We have them down here.. but not nearly as bad as up there. There was one course in particular.. had a sweet twilight deal about 10 years ago… 10 bucks for as many holes as you could get in after 530.. which was easily 18 in June/July if you didn’t play slow. Super nice course…but was cut right out of the woods and was fairly new… I had to leave after 8 holes… I was covered in spray… the mosquitoes were just that bad. It was torture.

Totally agree. There are several factors that people probably don’t want to get into to really hash this out. Shitty food that is terrible for you is dirt cheap compared to the healthy alternative. It’s a sad reality.

I can usually tell by the acne and general anger, not to mention unnaturally big muscles.
July 12th, 2011 at 5:53 PM
Plus, even though the South has more fatties per capita, there are still going to be more fatties outside of the South due to sheer population, right? Which means it still doesn’t make sense the NFL numbers are skewed.
July 12th, 2011 at 5:53 PM
I live by water, so the mosquitoes are fucking horrific. They haven’t been too bad this year thanks to what seems like an infiltration of bats this summer. God bless em, they cut the mosquito population in half it seems like.

i had a buddy who did that…got huge. he was about to re-order his supplements again but it turned out they tested positive for some sort of steroid and he couldn’t find it anymore.
never know what’s it it, i usually stick with optimum nutrition brand protein or creatine when i take it.
July 12th, 2011 at 5:59 PM
I never took creatine, though my brother and a couple of my friends did…seriously, all you need for a good physique is consistency with diet and exercise, and WHEY. Creatine I find pointless because you have to stop using it after what, 2 months? Ditto for things like Glutamine, etc…just a way to make money.

I lived in various parts of the South for over 30 years. Deep South: Most of Mississippi, South and Central Alabama, Georgia outside of Atlanta, most of South Carolina, northern Florida, eastern and southern Arkansas, much of Louisiana. Appalachian South: Northern Alabama, Northern Georgia, Western North Carolina, most of Tennessee, much of Kentucky, southern West Virginia, western Virginia, northern and western Arkansas. Peripheral South: Texas (though much of that can be called Western), Southern Missouri, parts of Tennessee and Kentucky, Southern Illinois, much of Carolina, much of southern Virginia. Southern cities/southern urban: Baton Rouge, Memphis, Louisville, Jackson, Charleston, Jacksonville, Birmingham, Atlanta, Charlotte, Little Rock. Urban societies are more cosmopolitan (for the region) than southern: Dallas, Orlando, Atlanta (an island in a sea of rednecks), Research Triangle (NC), Miami. Urban spots that defy any description: New Orleans, Austin (TX).
Easier way to define southern: Places where football is 1A to God’s 1. Places that are in counties that are at least 25% black. Places where the poverty level is below the national average. Places where Mexicans are more popular than Yankees. Places where the bugs are bad, women are loose, and New York is as exotic as Baghdad, and only slightly less attractive.

I’m from Mississippi. I live in the Pac NW.
The obesity rate in the Pac NW has doubled the last 20 years. The rest of the country is just catching up to where the South is, slowly. In 50 years the average American will look like one of those fatties from Wall E.
July 12th, 2011 at 6:14 PM
Speaking of the South, I watched that “Jesus Camp” documentary recently.
Yikes. Freaky stuff.
