Abby Wambach’s Heroic Header in 122nd Minute Forces Penalty Kicks, USA Wins!
Down a player since the 66th minute, the heroic USA women managed to tie Brazil in the 122nd minute on a gorgeous header from Abby Wambach. This came just moments after a player for Brazil pulled off one of the finer WWE moments of the tournament in faking an injury and then seconds later leaping off the stretcher and sprinting away. Karma is quite the bitch.
The USA won on penalty kicks thanks to another great save by Hope Solo, who will soon be my girlfriend.
The call of the goal is yet another gift from the great Ian Darke: “Ooooooooh can you believe it! Abby Wombach has saved the USA’s life!” Absolute chills.

The USA won on penalty kicks thanks to another great save by Hope Davis, who will soon be my girlfriend.
Hope Solo. Gotta fix that, Hernia. I know, we’re all excited by Hope Solo.

Ha. WOW.

Abby Wambach’s getting misty-eyed. Shit’s getting dusty in my living room…

USA women’s team is everything the USA men’s team isn’t.
Good.

I really haven’t watched much of this World Cup but the controversy with the penalty kick early on forced me to tune in. Twitter, for that reason, rules. This was awesome.

Ian Darke should just be annnouncing every sporting event. Let’s make this happen.

Nothing like a player making that slow walk toward the penalty kick spot. Some you can just tell are totally up to the moment. Some fiddle around with the placement of the ball, the look of nervousness clearly visible on their face. Is there anything in sports more dramatic?

The final shove of the puck in curling.
/MRejr – Help me out with terminology on this.

Ian Darke is a joke of a commentator.

Darke allowed foudy to cloud his jidgement way to much. He lost his objectivity and allowed the broadcast to devolve into “attack the referee”. Unfortinate.
July 10th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
Darke can do no wrong, so my response is “nah”

By the way, earlier in the tournament, ESPN talked up the beauty of dresden, which quite frankly I didn’t appreciate. It’s awkward. Talking up the revitalization of a city after you guys firebombed it. Not cool.

Game 7 overtime is more dramatic.
I enjoy the drama of PK’s, but they are too removed from the game played up until that point. Got home just in time to catch the kicks, congrats to the US Women.

As I recall, Bob Ley called for the firebombing.

Seriously… How fucking hot is Hope Solo? I find here to be incredibly attractive. Where does she rank in the pantheon of American female athletes that are actually great at their craft.
July 10th, 2011 at 2:48 PM
Her looks and badass demeanor have made me a huge fan.

goes up top. Danica suffers from flat boobsandass syndrome. I can’t think of anyone else who is this good and this good looking.
July 10th, 2011 at 2:49 PM
I would do nasty things. But one thing I found out that is surprising to me, she turns 30 on July 30th.
July 10th, 2011 at 2:55 PM
Same birthday as mine. That’s a good icebreaker whenever I track her down.
July 10th, 2011 at 2:59 PM
I lost all carnal urges for Danica after she drove Nascar.

It’s Womens Soccer, why are you wasting a post on this sport? I have no soccer skills, but I could go out there and beat the best woman player in the world…..because she’s a woman!!!
July 10th, 2011 at 3:04 PM
Hopefully you’re kidding.
July 10th, 2011 at 3:07 PM
Really happy for Megan Rapinoe. Legitimately one of the nicest people Ive ever met, and to come back from 2 ACL tears to assist the tying goal and hit a PK is just awesome.
July 10th, 2011 at 3:18 PM
Of course I am. That’s just what I have to read anytime Womens College Basketball or the WNBA is mentioned. I’m sorry I missed the match this morning. That type of drama is what I love the most about sports.

Replay is midnight eastern on ESPN2, if you wanna watch it.

Adolph Simpson was found not guilty?
July 10th, 2011 at 3:46 PM
It was incredible. I kept thinking how amazing it would be to repeat the drama seen by the men last summer. And then boom, goal.
July 10th, 2011 at 4:10 PM
The build-up to that goal was not unlike Donovan’s goal against Algeria, everyone is going to make that comparison. But the way this team fought for it, down a woman, was incredible. I don’t think we’ve ever seen that kind of fight in the men’s team, to be honest.
I won’t lie … It brought a tear to my eye. Geaux America!
July 10th, 2011 at 4:19 PM
And ESPNews has already ruined the moment by making a story about what LeBron James tweeted about it.
Way to make one of the greatest moments in American soccer history about King James, ASSHOLES.
