Texas Rangers Fan Falls 20-feet to His Death After Trying to Catch a Foul Ball Josh Hamilton Tossed Into the Stands
Shannon Stone, a 39-year-old firefighter in Texas, took his young son (8 or 9 years old) to the Athletics-Rangers game last night at the Ballpark in Arlington. In the second inning, Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton collected a foul ball and performed the seemingly innocuous task that almost all outfielders do – toss the ball into the stands so a lucky fan gets a souvenir. Stone, seated in the front row in left field, leaned forward and made the catch with both hands – but then he fell over the railing and plummeted 20 feet, landing on his head.
Fans who witnessed the fall said Stone was bleeding badly.
Oakland reliever Brad Ziegler was in the bullpen nearby and told the media after the game thought Stone was going to be OK because Stone was coherent after the fall, telling the medical personnel tending to him “please check on my son up there.”
On the way to the hospital, Stone went into cardiac arrest and died.
The incident comes a little less than one year after another Texas fan, Tyler Morris, was seriously injured at the Ballpark following a 30-foot fall.

Makes me sick to my stomach whenever I think about this story.
July 8th, 2011 at 7:49 AM
How horrible does Josh Hamilton feel today? Just awful.
July 8th, 2011 at 7:54 AM
CRM, you doing the Roundup today? I tweeted you a link
July 8th, 2011 at 7:59 AM
Brutal. I don’t have the same beliefs as Hamilton, but I hope he finds comfort somewhere. It had to have been an unbelievably difficult night.
His life has been something.
July 8th, 2011 at 8:15 AM
It’s terrible to say the least. Hopefully Hamilton can find some comfort somewhere.

I just looked up the IBC 2003 (Texas’ building code base document before municipalities add their own requirements)handrail height requirements. the handrail only has to be 30″ high. I never noticed that before, but it seems kinda short.
July 8th, 2011 at 8:26 AM
Yes, let’s make sure Josh Hamilton has comfort and not the little boy whose dad just died.
July 8th, 2011 at 8:26 AM
Seeing the kid standing there watching his dad fall and then thinking about him being there alone makes me want to cry.
July 8th, 2011 at 8:26 AM
I worry a great deal about Hamilton, who has faced more demons than 100 normal people will in a lifetime. Something like this could fuck up anyone, let alone a guy that wakes up worrying whether he can stay sober until he goes to bed.
I weeped like a baby this morning when I saw it. There are no words that can describe…
July 8th, 2011 at 8:29 AM
I read last night that the Rangers changed the handrail heights from 30″ to 42″ imeediately after someone fell in the first week of the stadium opening. But, I don’t know if that was only in the upper deck or all over.
July 8th, 2011 at 8:32 AM
I’m sure Josh Hamilton feels pretty terrible today throwing a ball short and allowing a young boy’s father to die. And obviously we should comfort the little boy. That was implied no matter what.
July 8th, 2011 at 8:35 AM
Ugh!I can’t even watch this! I can’t imagine how the poor kid is doing right now.
But I bet you right some lawyer right now is planning to sue for about 250 million.
July 8th, 2011 at 8:35 AM
Just in case nobody has seen it
July 8th, 2011 at 8:36 AM
I’ve always though that was short too. 30 inches is barely thigh high for many guys, would not be much a deterrent from “flipping over”
July 8th, 2011 at 8:36 AM
CJ – not me. Didn’t ever realize that was you.
July 8th, 2011 at 8:37 AM
unless the guy that fell over is a giant, that handrial is not much taller than 30″.
July 8th, 2011 at 8:37 AM
I think, in this case, Hamilton oughta be allowed to have a couple beers to take the edge off. I’d have a hard time going back out to LF for a while were I in his shoes.
So does this mean MLB outlaws tossing used balls into the crowd as souvenirs?
July 8th, 2011 at 8:40 AM
This is awful. Cant imagine that little kid watching his Dad fall like that. Read that the guy was a firefighter in Brownwood, TX. This is just sad all around.
July 8th, 2011 at 8:43 AM
Terrible tragedy. Feel heartsick for the kid.

No, and hell no.
July 8th, 2011 at 8:53 AM
fucking horrible.
July 8th, 2011 at 8:53 AM
Or does it mandate that fields change the railings on walls higher than 5-6 feet?
July 8th, 2011 at 8:54 AM
4 feet would be enough…30 inches just seems fucking retarded.
July 8th, 2011 at 8:54 AM
Always with the unnecessary anger.
July 8th, 2011 at 8:58 AM
How was that angry? I was pointing out that everyone is feeling sorry for Hamilton right now but not for the people who are actually affected by this man dying.
July 8th, 2011 at 8:59 AM
Well in that case you were pointing out something that is obviously wrong and silly to even think. Not angry. Sorry.
July 8th, 2011 at 9:01 AM
pretty sure the 30″ is something that was put forth by the ADA, or a similar institution. there main concern is disabled and young children. when I was in school the standard was 36″ I believe.
July 8th, 2011 at 9:04 AM
It’s silly to think three comments saying “I feel sorry for Josh Hamilton” don’t imply that people are thinking about Josh Hamilton moreso than the boy whose dad just died?
Go ahead and say a prayer for poor Josh Hamilton. But maybe you could include Shannon Stone’s family and his son that watched his dad die in your prayers too.
July 8th, 2011 at 9:04 AM

July 8th, 2011 at 9:06 AM
Heartbreaking.
July 8th, 2011 at 9:08 AM
Can’t we all just stop with this fucking bickering and just agree that this is a horrible tragedy for everyone involved? All the people involved with this accident are in our prayers. There are no varying degree of prayers here.
July 8th, 2011 at 9:12 AM
I’m not saying building codes are at fault here, because it was a freak accident… but I’ve always wondered why railings aren’t required to be higher… codes seem so overly-protective for everything else. There’s a big high-rise apartment building in Madison that has balconies…. the railings barely made it past mid-thigh on me, and I’m not freakishly tall or anything. I could easily see someone who’s had a few beers leaning on it, losing their balance and falling 12-15 stories. In fact, I’d be shocked if it didn’t happen eventually; given the amount of alcohol that’s consumed in those apartments.
Anyways, the shot of the little guy with his glove looking down is just about the worst thing I’ve seen in a long time. Just terrible.
July 8th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
Jeez man, this blows.
July 8th, 2011 at 9:21 AM
the codes allow for natural selection in some instances.
/books ticket to hell
July 8th, 2011 at 9:38 AM
Jesus sportsgal, you really think everyone is feeling sorry for pool old ball player and not the kid’s family? Come on, think about it. Seems pretty much a given that this is among the most awful things that could happen to a young boy. Kind of goes without saying, but thanks for blasting everyone who didn’t say it anyway.
July 8th, 2011 at 9:39 AM
and the wife(or the mother) who saw this terrible tragedy, think about her also, now i know his son saw everything also, if i was the president of the team i will collect money for helping this little boy( for school fund etc…)
who said seven was a lucky number,,,incident happened on 7 of 7
July 8th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
It goes without saying we feel terrible for the kid and his family. Unfortunately, we probably won’t hear about the kid again, but Josh Hamilton will be in the public eye going forward. I would be surprised if he plays today or the rest of the weekend. He’s a sensitive, unusual guy, no doubt. I just feel bad for SportsGal’s husband. She sounds like she’s as much fun as a proctology exam
July 8th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
no kidding.
