Kerry Collins Retires After 16 Seasons
Kerry Collins is expected to announce his retirement from the NFL today Tweets ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This comes as a bit of a surprise since all the most recent stories about Collins have been about his desire to return to the Titans for the 2011 season. Alas, the idea of battling Vince Young and Jake Locker for certain spots on the depth chart must not have been what Collins wanted in life. So the former Saint, Raider, Giant, Titan and Panther has thrown his last pass.
Kerry Collins debuted with the Carolina Panthers in 1995. Collins was the 5th pick in the draft in ’95 and went on to start 13 games that year for the 7-9 Panthers. In his second season, he took the Panthers all the way to the NFC Championship game where they lost to Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers.
Collins would go on to have a well-publicized battle with alcoholism before leading the Giants to the Super Bowl in 2000. He’s spent his last five seasons in Tennessee. Collins finishes his career having thrown and completed the 9th most passes in NFL history. Collins also made the Pro Bowl twice. First in 1996 with the Panthers and then 12 years later with the Titans.

Think they are still taking the “Young is gone” policy, despite Young thinking he may not be. Last I heard at least…

Criminally underrated QB, his career numbers are fairly impressive and he did a lot of work on bad teams. And he was the trigger man for the greatest offense in college football history.

Collins had a lot longer/successful career than most people would think at first glance. didnt the titans have a #1 seed in the playoffs not too long ago?
July 7th, 2011 at 5:00 PM
Nah, he’s properly rated as being a decent enough quarterback but never one of the best in the league…him and Vinny Testaverde pretty much had the same careers
July 7th, 2011 at 5:00 PM
Just think how good he could have been if he’d ever fixed that hitch in his delivery

If only Vinny could have pulled a Bo Jackson and avoided those late 80s Bucs teams

Nice. I’ve always wanted to enter one of those events. I will one day, but it sure as hell won’t be the main event unless I win my way via a smaller tourney. I can save up to enter one of the $1500-2000 events, just to say I did it. Mind you, this is probably happening no sooner than 5 years or so.
July 7th, 2011 at 5:09 PM
Testaverde was better at gaining and losing yardage on the ground. Thats about it.

Serenity now!!

I suppose it’s fitting that Kerry Collins began his career with the Panthers and ended it with the Titans since the two teams are mirror images of eachother. Both have similiar color schemes, both are in the South and both have been fairly nondescript except for one close Super Bowl loss each and more recently chocking as high seeds in the 08-09 playoffs (the game where Jake Delhomme imploded and threw five picks.)

Testaverde was much better than Kerry Collins. Kerry Collins teammates were much better than Testaverde’s teammates.

I just noticed that the USMNT blog on ESPN did their own 2014 prediction. I’ll save the linkage (it’s insider) and just put the names…
Starting 11: Tim Howard, (fr L-R) Sean Cunningham, Tim Ream, Clarence Goodson, Eric Lichaj, (fr L-R) Landon Donovan, Michael Bradley, Stuart Holden, Timmy Chandler, Juan Agudelo, Clint Dempsey
Reserves: Brad Guzan, Carlos Bocanegra, Ike Opara, Zac Whitbread, Johnathan Spector, Mikkel Diskerud, Maurice Edu, Alejandro Bedoya, Brek Shea, Jozy Altidore, Freddy Adu

I agree that their numbers are similar. Collins is a slightly above average quarterback, when he was sober, who played for a long time. Testaverde played for dreadful, dreadful teams until he was well past 30.

Probably right, I was more speaking to guys who just hung around forever and fall higher on career passing marks than you’d expect…don’t really care for you speaking ill of Ravens great Michael Jackson though

He-He was one of the 5 best receivers he played with, until he was collecting social security with the Cowboys.

Plus, Vincent was color blind on the downs in which he threw interceptions.

Sweet, didn’t know that. I know there was poker talk yesterday or the day before, but didn’t read it all.

Hint… if you pick someone who plays for the Vikings (eg Favre) and when he gets close, say “he is a world champion”, you really piss him off
/even he knows that the two are incompatible
July 7th, 2011 at 5:29 PM
70 interceptions better.
Or 70 TDs worse? Didn’t Vinny have 70 career INTs after 2 seasons in Tampa?
July 7th, 2011 at 5:33 PM
Testaverde had five seasons with a rating higher than Collins single best season (85.4)
July 7th, 2011 at 5:37 PM
Thankfully I still can’t see the blinking. Still wish I knew how to get it to work though.

Paul Kuharsky makes the point I meant to in correcting the Vince Young part in comment 1 (ha!). I think the Titans really wanted Collins around to give Locker a year as a backup (or half a year). Pretty sure Collins had a starting job in almost any scenario, and VY was gone.
