What The Top 100 in the NFL Would Look Like If It Was Based on Pay
The NFL Network concluded its Top 100 countdown, which was sort of based on the votes of some of the players who didn’t really rank the top 100. I thought I would take a look at what the Top 100 in the NFL would look like if we examined how GM’s viewed value, by seeing where they allocated cap space and salary.
I used the most recent salary info at the USA Today database. I also used cap value (bonuses spread over life of contract plus yearly wage) instead of current listed salary, because I think it’s a more reliable indicator. The salary for a given year includes signing bonuses, and so tends to be over-represented with guys who happened to be in the first year of their deal. The cap value is spread over time.
So, where do the GM’s disagree with a small sampling of the players? Quarterbacks, for one. Do I think that 22 Quarterbacks are really among the best 100 players? No, guys like Derek Anderson and Jake Delhomme show up on the list. It shows how important the position is, though, that they would spend that kind of coin, and how ridiculous it is that Philip Rivers was 26th. No way he slips out of the top 10 in a real draft.
Here’s a summary of each position, listing how many would be in the Cap Value Top 100 vs the NFL Network list, as well as the highest ranking in each.
- Quarterback (22 by cap value vs. 11). Highest: #1 vs. #1 (Tom Brady).
- Defensive End (18 vs. 15). Highest: #2 vs. #10 (Julius Peppers).
- Wide Receiver (13 vs. 18). Highest: #20 vs. #7 (Andre Johnson).
- Linebacker (10 vs. 11). Highest: #24 vs. #4 (Ray Lewis).
- Offensive Tackle (8 vs. 5). Highest: #9 vs. #28 (Jake Long).
- Cornerback (8 vs. 5). Highest: #7 vs. #8 (Darrelle Revis).
- Running Back/Fullback (5 vs. 11). Highest: #13 vs. #3 (Adrian Peterson).
- Defensive Tackle (5 vs. 4). Highest: #37 vs. #17 (Haloti Ngata).
- Offensive Guard (5 vs. 5). Highest: #53 vs #34 (Jahri Evans).
- Tight End (3 vs. 5). Highest: #81 vs. #22 (Antonio Gates).
- Safety (2 vs. 6). Highest: #74 vs. #5 (Ed Reed).
- Center (1 vs. 3). Highest: #52 vs. #47 (Nick Mangold).
On the flip side, Running Backs, Wide Receivers, Safeties and Centers got much love in the Top 1o0 rankings relative to how they are paid by GM’s. Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu were both in the top 6, whereas no safety appears in the top 50 in salary cap value. More than double the number of running backs appear on the list than are paid like top 100 players.
A Top 20 in money spent? It would include 12 Quarterbacks, 3 Defensive Ends, 2 Offensive Tackles, and 1 each of Cornerback, Wide Receiver, and Running Back.

Don’t ever speak down upon anything that has to do with Ed Reed again, or I will be forced to thrash you.
July 6th, 2011 at 4:32 PM
I actually just want the lockout to end so we can just pay Ngata already.
July 6th, 2011 at 4:32 PM
It also shows how stupid/desperate some GM’s are. Of all the people in this country, I find it incredibly hard to believe we can’t find 32 above average starting quarterbacks.
July 6th, 2011 at 4:33 PM
Centers are way underpaid, unless you’re talking about the Bills center who doesn’t deserve the money he makes
July 6th, 2011 at 4:33 PM
So can I take this to mean that there will NOT be a Cory Snyder post?
July 6th, 2011 at 4:33 PM
many of his 2010-2011 interceptions were lucky breaks on tipped balls. Brandon Stokeley 2009 vs the Bengals think Reed got a bit lucky

Or the center for the Cowboys. What’s his name? I can’t recall. Vaguely French sounding if I’m not mistaken.

Does this mean safety is the easiest position to play in the NFL? It seems odd that the two best, who are arguably game changers, aren’t in the top 50 contracts.

Ahhh, the Ed Reed gets lucky thing, good try. He seems to get lucky a whole lot then, doesn’t he? At a certain point, it isn’t luck, like his whole career.

Am I reading this right? The top ranked NFL Network Ranking player by position was also the highest paid player by position? You only list one player.
July 6th, 2011 at 4:37 PM
andre gurode.
I know, I was throwing that out there so that Dirt could go off on how much he dislikes Gurode again. I enjoy it greatly, especially because there are people who think he’s a great center based on Pro Bowl appearances.

It’s more an Ed Reed inferiority complex, after dealing with Eagles fans my entire life yelling at me that Dawkins was better every time I was wearing anything with Reed’s name on it. It’s actually weird living in Raven country now (actually, Redskins country, which is way funnier).
July 6th, 2011 at 4:40 PM

Two never-failing truths:
Cincinnati Reds will never win a title with Dusty Baker as manager.
Kansas City Chiefs will never win a title with Todd Haley as head coach
July 6th, 2011 at 4:52 PM
Put Brian Dawkins in that Ravens defense, which has always had a nasty front 7, and you would probably get similar stats. Dawkins was a beast.
July 6th, 2011 at 4:52 PM
Not over the summer cap. Plenty of time to move some parts out (Poti will retire or go on LTIR).
July 6th, 2011 at 4:53 PM

July 6th, 2011 at 4:53 PM
Nice post Lisk, though I wonder what the list would look like in regards to what players make vs the median salary for their position.
I am sure a GM would rather spend $6.4 million on Ed Reed than $8.6 million on Jake Delhomme.

shes getting a defamation suit. She ruined someone’s life when she blamed her for the murder of her daughter.
July 6th, 2011 at 5:08 PM
Why though? In their primes, both were good cover corners who could pick off a lot of passes (obviously Reed is more dangerous with the ball in his hands) but Dawkins was a better blitzer and better stopping the run. Not saying Dawkins is better overall, but it’s definitely close.
July 6th, 2011 at 5:08 PM

July 6th, 2011 at 5:09 PM
?
July 6th, 2011 at 5:09 PM
Not at all. I fucking hate the Ravens, but I love Lewis, Reed and Ngata. I meant Dawkins was the heart and soul of the Eagles defense similarly to how Lewis is the same for the Ravens. I think I would still take Reed over Dawkins barely, but part of what Dawkins brought to the team was his leadership.
Still I’d rather have Polamalu at SS than either Reed or Dawkins at FS.

I’m late to this party… can we do this again with just GM’s who make the playoffs? I really would hate for Matt Millen (not sure how many of his contracts are still on the lions), Al Davis or Jerry Jones affecting these rankings.
Plus… with the salary structure for rookies, crappy teams have always been forced to overpay QB’s. I guess that means GMs think it’s important enough to overpay/risk, but I would be more curious if there was a difference b/w top 16/bottom 16 teams, than the order by position

I wonder, though, how much of the Tatum Bell effect might be in play with Charles/Jones: Shanahan used to infuriate the shit out of us by only giving Bell the ball like 10-12 times a game, even though he was clearly far, far more dynamic than Mike Anderson.
Then, when Bell finally got his carries, we all learned what Shanahan had guessed previously. Not that Charles=Bell, but something to think about. Or in my case, hope for.

Doubtful, only because Charles gets a decent amount of carries. I just wouldn’t overuse him. Somehow that “ruleof 375″ or whatever it is is pretty accurate.
I watched it with Jeff “Not a top10 coach in the NFL I don’t care what you all say” Fisher in 2009. They wasted Chris Johnson, trying to get him to 2,000 yards, and he was flat all 2010 (and put a lot more pressure on a fragile QB position).

The next time TBL boasts about the number of comments in a day someone should point out that jck49erfan is doubling up (at best) on everything…biggest stat compiler since Bert Blyleven

Took on Lebda for one year in order to dump Lombardi’s contract. Lebda will be lucky to crack the lineup.
Preds have Ekholm, Ellis and Blum to replace Franson. The organizational depth on defense is ridiculous.
None of the RFA’s are impact players (could argue Kostitsyn), and can be replaced internally.
Signing Bergfors for just above the NHL minimum was a steal. He’ll replace a good chunk of what they lost in Ward.

jck, if TBL is a football team, and we’re fielding an offense and defense, you’re a starter somewhere. outside LB, maybe?

He didn’t get to low seven figures by being an idiot.
July 6th, 2011 at 5:31 PM
I think it’s pretty similar. Charles carried the ball exactly 15 times more than Bell did in Bell’s best season (coincidentally, his second). Third season, full workload, significant decline.
Again: maybe, maybe not. But speed backs with slight builds don’t always hold up.
July 6th, 2011 at 5:32 PM
Ah, never mind, I fucked up reading Charles’ stats. Forgot about that whole “2010″ thing. Still, though, my point stands, because I want it to.

Speaking of…. HuskerDawg thinks that Ron Dayne- the NCAA’s all time leading rusher – was merely a ‘stat padder’.

He’s the Ray Lewis: jumping on piles to compile more tackles to inflate stats.

It’s become comical the past couple years, a good 2-3 seconds after the whistle and everybody’s starting to get up.

I kept hearing Kostitsyn was going to be a good goal scorer for them, but I never got the impression he was that great a skater. I do like having Fisher around, but I still think they have two second-line centers (Legwand, Fisher), and no good wings. Erat/Hornqvist are what they are, and I haven’t had anyone tell me Geoffriyon/Halischuck could be good wings on a top line.
July 6th, 2011 at 5:38 PM
It’s so funny that so many people throw this out there and try to dispute his greatness. He’s slipped a bit yeah, but the guy is one of the best LB’s to ever play the game. Hater’s gonna hate.
