The Roundup: Watch a Woman Take a Bath on the Subway, Oregon State Guard Shatters a Backboard & Jon Stewart Tops Jay Leno
Selita Ebanks … bacon prices set to soar! … weekend leftover: a photo of Redman buying fireworks … here’s Frank Rich’s first offering at NY Magazine … Elizabeth Hurley is joining Gossip Girl … pretty sad story: “Recovering N.J. alcoholics killed by suspected drunk driver in Pennsylvania” … two men shot on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City … Charlie Sheen roast to go head-to-head with Ashton Kutcher’s CBS debut … I’m 100% certain you’ll laugh … monkey takes camera, then takes photos of himself … why not revisit this 1994 story in the New Yorker on Chloe Sevigny? …
Say it with me: Everyone cheats, but not everyone gets caught. What went down at Kean University is pathetic, especially when you consider it’s Division III and the women’s hoops team. [Star Ledger]
In the 18-49 demo, Jon Stewart topped Jay Leno in the second quarter. Leno had won that demo for the last 10 years. [Media Life Magazine]
Somewhat fascinating story where the Colts’ Robert Mathis, a blogger, twitter and Len Pasquarelli are intertwined. [18to88]

Here’s pinup Jamie Edmondson offering her thoughts on some of the worst ceremonial 1st pitches. [Playboy, NSFW]
Rich Rod’s McMansion in Michigan is up for sale. [Ann Arbor.com]
So now the Mets’ plan might be to overpay for Jose Reyes? Wonderful. If this is a ploy to jack up his trade value, well done, Mets. [Post]
“Ohio is issuing about twice as many handicapped-parking placards as a decade ago, an increase that reflects the state’s aging population.” Ohio is the new Florida. [Dispatch]
Jeff Halpern is returning to the Caps, which must make his former cheerleader wife thrilled. [Bog]
Gotta love the fact that DeMarcus Cousins picked up a tech in a summer league basketball game. [Afro.com]
A dust storm overwhelmed Phoenix yesterday.
At the 2:15 mark, watch Roberto Nelson shatter a backboard. Then, wait to see how bloody his face is from the glass.
Well, this is pretty ridiculous.
Here are some highlights from USA 107, Lithuania 105 in overtime at the FIBA Under-19 World Championships. Jeremy Lamb scored 35 points to lead the US, and Florida’s Patric Young caps the highlights with a monster dunk over Torontos’ 2012 No. 1 draft pick, Jonas Valanciunas (30 points, 15 rebounds). According to USA coach Paul Hewitt, the kid on Lithuania Croatia who has been a major surprise is 17-year-old Dario Saric. Hewitt compared him to a young Dirk. The US is playing Croatia right now (follow the box score here).

Torontos’ 2012 No. 1 draft pick, Jonas Valanciunas (30 points, 15 rebounds)
great line….against under-19 year-olds, including Dareus Lamb

July 6th, 2011 at 8:45 AM
Ummm….Dario Saric plays for Croatia…the team USA is playing right now. Through 3 quarters, he’s 6/12 with 13 points.
July 6th, 2011 at 8:46 AM

good catch Scalia. i added the box score. Saric is up to 15 points, USA in trouble
July 6th, 2011 at 8:49 AM
I think the term McMansion is getting thrown abut a bit too much. That house qualifies as a mansion, period. The big ass brick front, vinyl sided 5000 foot houses with over-inflated prices, now those are McMansions.
July 6th, 2011 at 8:50 AM
Apparently these 3 guys (Saric, Barac, Katic) from Croatia are pretty damn good.
July 6th, 2011 at 8:50 AM
You can usually see a dust storm like that every year in Phoenix. It is a nuisance. Unless of course you are outside then it could be more of a problem. I imagine in a sci-fi movie the sand would be whipping so bad that it would just skin people. Then lightning would strike in the middle of it and turn some of the sand to glass and shards would cut civilians in half.
/forwards to roland emmerich.

I would like to give her the ol’ High Hard One a few times at the plate.
July 6th, 2011 at 8:56 AM
Agreed.
TBL, if that house is a McMansion, what would qualify as a real mansion?
July 6th, 2011 at 8:56 AM
in Yardwork, I hope hernia talks about how shitty of job Joe West and his umpiring crew do on a nightly basis. Those fuckers should be fired from baseball.

please tell me this isn’t a women’s soccer reference…
July 6th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
Scalia – you see USA close within 2? I wish the game were on TV.
USA isn’t the ‘real’ team, obviously, because there’s no stars from UNC, UK, etc on the team. looks like it’s all Jackson and Lamb
July 6th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
rich rod’s house qualifies as mcmansion…mcmansion means it’s pre-fab, recently built and looks like it was a template. the opposite of old money.
July 6th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
So, about that whole “no foreigners in next year’s 1st round”…

July 6th, 2011 at 9:01 AM

mantis – Did you see Joe West’s dick move last night? After he tossed Leyland, Leyland wanted to argue and get an explanation and West’s little awful bitch Angel Hernandez kept blocking Leyland from getting to West while West stood there with his arms crossed and a smug bitch look on his face. Just pathetic that an umpiring crew thinks they are hot shit. I don’t blame Verlander for getting tossed and talking shit to Hernandez and West
July 6th, 2011 at 9:01 AM
And they take the lead … Young seems to be too much inside as well.
July 6th, 2011 at 9:02 AM

i will no longer be a baseball fan if this happens.
July 6th, 2011 at 9:02 AM
Why not? There is some major ass on both of those teams.
July 6th, 2011 at 9:02 AM
Saw American Psycho last night on IFC and Chloe looks OK in that movie. She’s looked not so great in other movies. The ultimate “two face”.
July 6th, 2011 at 9:02 AM
No Jeter links? I even tried that SpectatorCharts or whatever site this morning and no Jeter. I thought they liked baseball?
July 6th, 2011 at 9:04 AM
HABOOB!!!
July 6th, 2011 at 9:05 AM
The only part that looks like it applies is recently built. That house doesn’t look pre-fab. And who is to say if it’s a template unless it’s in a neighborhood where they all look the same. You can’t really tell from that picture.
July 6th, 2011 at 9:05 AM
who cares til he actually gets to 3,000 in the next couple days?
and UM, agreed on the scocer teams. Some fine ladies for the U.S. and Sweden

July 6th, 2011 at 9:07 AM
You can’t prefab masonry. Almost all homes come from a template.
Still seems really steep for Saline
July 6th, 2011 at 9:07 AM
No I didn’t hear about it traderjack, but that’s some bullshit. Joe West is the worst ump, bar none.
If a computer can help aid tennis line shots, why can’t they call balls and strikes or foul balls? Strikezone is supposed to be standardized, not whatever Joe West wants it to be that day.

July 6th, 2011 at 9:08 AM

July 6th, 2011 at 9:09 AM
ridiculous. it’s not pre-fab (see my example above for what is) and at some point, every house has to be recently built right? sorry, that house ain’t a mcmansion, period.
This is a freaking mcmansion
July 6th, 2011 at 9:09 AM
What time is USA/Sweden today?
i happened to catch that riudiculous first goal in the england match yesterday. no reason for goalies to be so far off the line with o one bearing down to cut off an angle
July 6th, 2011 at 9:09 AM
phillymantis, Curt Schilling absolutely murdered the umpires yesterday on Cowherd’s show. He called out a bunch by name and was talking some great shit. I love former ballplayers that aren’t afraid to speak out. So many of them still sit on the fence and don’t want to make enemies.

McMansion means a development with big houses that are the same 2-3 styles repeated over and over. That’s where the “Mc” part comes from, a repeatable style.
July 6th, 2011 at 9:10 AM

I’ll appreciate it when he gets the 3,000th hit, SC. I don’t care about the oral worship leading up to the moment. No sour grapes here. I just hate hype and the constant fellatio given to Jeter
July 6th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
SC.. you really want to read multiple Jeter fellating stories every single day until he gets to 3,000? And probably beyond too, right? Suck a dick.
July 6th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
tough loss for USA.
July 6th, 2011 at 9:15 AM
MLB publicly treats the umpires like they are perfect, flawless beings. There’s no accountability that even the players know about for the most part
July 6th, 2011 at 9:15 AM
you’re the best!
July 6th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
I appreciate Jeter getting to 3,000. However, I hate all the attention. Just because he’s Cap’n Jetes, don’t remember Biggio, Gwynn or others before this getting the same hype.

July 6th, 2011 at 9:17 AM
You know NY would melt down if Girardi dared to move the golden calf from the leadoff spot.
July 6th, 2011 at 9:17 AM
why can’t they call balls and strikes or foul balls? Strikezone is supposed to be standardized, not whatever Joe West wants it to be that day.
if they want the technology for foul balls and homeruns, fine. but you’re completely removing an inherent element of the game if you standardize the strikezone. big zones, small zones, high, low… all play into daily adjustments the hitters and more so pitchers must make to succeed in each game. consistency in an umps zone from the first inning to the last is all you’ll ever hear a baseball player or manager ask for, not fucking robots.
July 6th, 2011 at 9:18 AM
/rich rod’s wife dresses like this in public…you think he has any taste at all?
To be fair, she’s probably from West Virginia, where it is currently the year 1983.

I’m about there. Dont get me started about the horrific crying to the heavens Ive read this morning about Sabathia not getting picked for the All Star game. For fuck’s sake. It must be nice to get the highest run support in the league.

July 6th, 2011 at 9:22 AM
McMansion means a development with big houses that are the same 2-3 styles repeated over and over. That’s where the “Mc” part comes from, a repeatable style.
This. I’m sure Rich Rod’s old house has more than a few doppelgangers in the neighborhood. They’re not exactly the same, but when you can tell that every single house is built by the same builder, I think that qualifies as a McMansion. Those developments are all over Atlanta. I can’t fathom how rich some builders/developers must have gotten around here doing the boom years.
July 6th, 2011 at 9:22 AM

didn’t not need the ‘shitty job’ description. that was a given. He’s the only umpire that draws a reaction (pissed) from me when I see he’s working a Brewers game.

July 6th, 2011 at 9:34 AM
no vincent, it’s not the width of the plate is it?
if the up/down strike zone changes based on player height, shouldn;t plate-coverage change by batter?
July 6th, 2011 at 9:34 AM
Russel Martin though.. I guess he must be well liked? Or tell good jokes?
July 6th, 2011 at 9:35 AM
While on the topic of anger, can someone expain why Russel Martin is on the all star team? And why Victor Martinez isnt? I’m flummoxed. Was that a players vote?
Because the all star game is nothing more than a high school popularity contest? Don’t get so worked up CJ. Russell Martin will put on 30 pounds and push out 3 kids by the time he’s 25. (Wait, that was the hottest/most popular girl in my HS… looking at those FB pictures are always fun). The game doesn’t matter. I’d rather players get the 3 days off, personally.

Oh no Rovell, not you too..
July 6th, 2011 at 9:36 AM
See… The Bombers stand on the top step of the dugout and are nothing but all class when their hated rival breaks some sort of mythical curse but when one of the greatest Yankees of the last 20 years approaches a milestone or a dominant starter doesn’t get picked for the All-Star game it’s all sour grapes.
I give up.

July 6th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
dude seriously. you are pulling my lariat aren’t you?
ok, here: the debate is about standard strike zone, and the complaint is how it changes by ump. my statement was that knees to leters, the long-ago traditional strike zone should be easy enough to stick to, though it changes by height of batter so a robot calling that part would be tough. since umps also have a different inside/outside strike zone, what would be the traditional/supposed-to-be width?
wouldn;t that change based on where a guy stands in the box (closer/farther from plate), longer/shorter arms?
not joking, tho you;re making me feel like i’m missing something obvious
July 6th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
Rory can build that because nobody wants to live in Northern Ireland.

SC, Sabathia is very good but extremely fortunate that the Yankees score like animals. All but one of his wins has come when the team has scored 5 or more runs. 6 of his twelve wins have come where the Yankees scored in double digits. It’s like Dice-K a few years ago. He was 18-5 but mostly because the Red Sox beat the shit out of teams

So you’re saying Carsten Charles should ask his teammates to score less runs? Well, I suppose it’s good for the Yankees to be challenged at times. Wouldn’t want them getting soft. I’ll bring it up with Cashman next time we go to Flashdancers.

At Venetian Hills, a group of teachers and administrators who dubbed themselves “the chosen ones” convened to change answers in the afternoons or during makeup testing days, investigators found. Principal Clarietta Davis, a testing coordinator told investigators, wore gloves while erasing to avoid leaving fingerprints on answer sheets.

No. I’m just saying him being left off the all-star team is not that much of a shame.

I’m not even taking that into consideration. I’m just tired of the mass opinion rising against public schools. I went to public schools and don’t feel it was a shitty education. Every schooling option has its problems.

July 6th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
Some are, some aren’t. I went to a college where there was a decent number of home-schooled kids. There are some normal ones who had parents who made sure they were involved in social activities and had a job while being schooled. For all the stories we hear about crazy homeschooled kids, there are some to balance it out.

Mayers will prove to be a more useful player than Carcillo. Carcillo will battle Scott for worst skater.

it is. but the reward for the hard work is sufficient.

Still not sure why you think Carcillo can’t skate. He’s a one year, $775K contract. For a 4th line player, he’s got everything you want. Brings energy, can be a rectal itch for the other team, limits his stupid penalties for the most part and can actually score a goal here and there.
I think it’s a great signing. The meatheads screaming “DUR DUR, HE COMMITS TEH DUMBEST PENALTIES HARF HARF!” will be the ones that love him by the end of November. See here:

Sadly, that doesn’t just happen in West Virginia. My friend does social work and missionary work all across the country and it’s a sad commonplace in the most poorest of areas in the country, regardless of state.

July 6th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
If you had to watch John Scott last year, you’d be THRILLED to have Carbomb in that role this year. Scott can’t skate, shoot, pass, forecheck, backcheck, stay out of the box or anything else hockey related. He can find the other team’s drooling moron and pummel him into submission. If they’re both drooling mongoloids, it doesn’t help my team to get the other team’s guy off the ice. If anything, it helps them.
July 6th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
Still not sure why you think Carcillo can’t skate.
Ummm, because I’ve watched him play, a lot.
Behind the Net numbers are even more telling
How about his non-penalty minutes stats?
July 6th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
Now, I can only hope that Glen Sather continues his trend and trades for John Scott so he has an “enforcer” to protect his new $60M bright and shiny toy. Hawks can throw in a pick or a prospect and get Dubinsky or Callahan in return.

Thanks for the link, I didnt know when he was going to start. I’ve always liked his stuff, but that was a bit wordy and all over the place.
July 6th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
He’s not paid to contribute more than 5-10 goals per season. His primary value is drawing penalties or getting in a fight with a skill player so that he can drag that guy to the box for five minutes. No one here (well, the smart ones at least) is under the delusion that Danny Carcillo is going to somehow put up 40 points this year. He is what he is. He plays a role the Hawks didn’t have last year.
He’s a douchebag. But now, he’s OUR douchebag.

July 6th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
He is what he is.
Yup, a guy that plays heavily sheltered minutes and gets dominated by lesser competition.
But, as mentioned, it’s a one year deal for minimal dollars, probably worth a shot.
July 6th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
Ctrl+F. Find a reason why I wouldn’t want Carcillo on a 1 year ticket for less than a million dollars to play 10 minutes a night instead of last year’s 4th line that Quenneville didn’t trust and only put out there for 4-5 minutes which resulted in the top 2 lines being gassed by March.
I’ll wait.
July 6th, 2011 at 10:35 AM

July 6th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
geez, thoughts on the sabres getting leino and erhoff? I like the Leino signing but not so much the contract. I’m happy they got those guys and re-signed some crucial RFA’s. Also happy with the Regehr trade so Buffalo should be a lot better next year and challenge Boston for division title and top 3 spot
July 6th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
Wouldnt this also involve a lot of clicking to the next page until I got to 2010 and 2009? Yeah no thanks. This has nothing to do with the part about the money and the 1 year deal, I’m just sure youve called him a waste of space before.

She’s talking about searching for stuff you said last year about Carcillo.
July 6th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
There’s really no shame in saying, ‘yeah, ive criticized the guy before, but the risk is minimal so i’ll give him a shot and hope he helps the team.’ But you going all out to argue a point that Flyers fans were trying to argue against you in years past is just silly.

6 years and $33M. I can’t see paying a douchebag with a point shot that kind of money. Sorry Wally. He has value for the BJs, just not for that kind of cake.
When they first announced the signing I did. Then, I read a little further and I’m warming up to the guy. Believe it or not, I hated the Marian Hossa signing when it first happened. Now, he’s my favorite player.

Skill gap, sure. Roles? They’re quite similar. All 3 of them are bad rashes. Adam Burish was the EXACT same player as Carcillo is now. When he returned in 2010, the Hawks snapped out of a slump and rolled through the end of March and April to get the #2 seed and the highest point total in the team’s history.
July 6th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Check Lapiere’s FO% in the playoffs, Vigneault had him out for key D zone draws. Laviolette was scared to put Carcillo on the ice.
If you think Marchand is a 4th line plug then there isn’t much point in continuing.
