The Brett Favre Chatter That Will Make Your Stomach Churn
Brett Favre was last mentioned on TBL on June 15. (Off topic: Damn, Bar.) The link went to a Sports Illustrated post that captured Favre saying, “I can still throw the ball as well as I ever have. No question about that.”
Before that, I mentioned Favre in a 1-liner (remember those things!? Good times!) that linked to a Pro Football Talk article about Favre not knowing what he was going to do with himself. (Hint: Not take sexy pictures.)
Yesterday when I was on the Twitter, I saw someone RT a Pro Football Talk story about Brett Favre. “No escape from Brett Favre comeback talk,” it said. This struck me as odd. If there were serious Brett Favre comeback talk, wouldn’t we here at The Big Lead be bombarding you with post after post about Favre? I submit that, yes, we would. Apparently, we missed the memo.
Everyone is sick of Favre comeback chatter, and everyone has been sick of Favre comeback chatter since about three Favre comebacks ago. But that doesn’t mean the chatter is going away, at least not until the regular season starts without a Favre comeback.
I think its great that we’ve moved past talking about Favre and can officially get to talking about talking about Favre. Or in this case, talking about not talking about Favre. Until people are yelling about this on Around the Horn again, I think we can move on. Unless more stories like this one from NFL.com’s Gil Brandt come out.
That said, I do think Favre would be interested in talking to a team about returning. But I don’t see a team out there right now that would bring him back as a starter.
What?
When the lockout ends (hopefully soon) we can get back to the comeback talk. The shortened training camp and preseason will be very attractive to Favre.

Gil Gunderson >>> Gil Brant.

Carolina Panthers. Book it.

No way CRM wrote that headline.

Browns to reunite with the walrus.
July 6th, 2011 at 5:49 PM
Arizona Cardinals.

I think the Cardinals will be starting Hasselbeck and the Seahawks will be trading a 1st and 3rd for Kolb. Favre mentoring Newton in Carolina. Same agents.
July 6th, 2011 at 5:51 PM
Jets.
July 6th, 2011 at 5:53 PM
Favre mentoring Newton? If by mentoring you mean him saying something like, “hold this clipboard and just watch what I do rook.” I don’t really see him investing any time in truly mentoring anyone, unless he all of a sudden grew up.

Packers

Please

Flip Flynn for a decent pick while the price is high and make him the backup (because he’s so clearly inferior to the present QB which is always fun to point out)…that way he retires a Packer, wins another ring Jim McMahon-style and all’s right with the world

Okay, I meant the guy that signs Favre to the Panthers will think he did so he could mentor Newton. The last guy that played behind Favre worked out well.
/Newton will still bust
July 6th, 2011 at 5:59 PM
If the Packers sign him I can guarantee you that Rodgers knee gets shattered. The football gods work in mysterious ways.
July 6th, 2011 at 5:59 PM
I like that scenario there Butters…would be great and it would kill Favre inside.
July 6th, 2011 at 5:59 PM
As much as it pains me to say it… I’m pretty sure that had to do with the brains/talent of that guy behind him…

Nick Fairley will make this happen regardless of what Favre decides to do. I sent him a wire transfer last week.
July 6th, 2011 at 6:01 PM
I”ve listened to Gil Brandt a few times on NFL Radio Network. I’m sure he is 87.
July 6th, 2011 at 6:01 PM
Only the retirement would come true in your scenario though.
July 6th, 2011 at 6:02 PM
Really? This is Favre we are talking about.
July 6th, 2011 at 6:03 PM
I’d rather have a season-long lockout than see Favre play again
July 6th, 2011 at 6:12 PM
Fuck this noise. As long as he’s not a Chief (which I hope is around 1%), I’ll ignore every bit of him thanks to watching my team.

//Theo better be on the phone about Wandy or Dempster
July 6th, 2011 at 6:14 PM
I’m finding it difficult to believe that even Favre is delusional enough to think he still could play in the NFL. He clearly cannot compete at the same level anymore. The Saints D made sure of that in the playoffs.

//Theo better be on the phone about Wandy or Dempster
You can have Wandy, for one good prospect or two middling prospects and a middle infielder.

I am a podcast virgin. Any suggestions?
I prefer sports-oriented to lifestyle shows, but am open to both.

MS, you think the ‘stros would ever get rid of Pence? I’m sure it would take a lot right, or is he just off the board out there?
July 6th, 2011 at 6:23 PM
Broccoli, I sure as hell hope not. The guy is just entering the prime of his career. In my mind there are basically two Astros who are untouchable, Pence and Lyles. Maybe also Norris. Bourn is having a great year, but he’s definitely got a price.
July 6th, 2011 at 6:25 PM
Kinda figured that, but that was one of the names the radio heads dropped as a wish list type since you guys are so far out an all. I’m not holding out hope because I don’t think it would happen, but it sure would be nice.
July 6th, 2011 at 6:29 PM
Well I don’t put any credence at all in what is chewed over on talk radio. Richard Justice said that Norris and Lyles should be untouchable while Pence should be available only for a high price. I just can’t agree with him. Pence is the type of player you look for in a rebuilding franchise: he’s relatively young, good pop in his bat, decent corner outfielder, great speed, and doesn’t get injured very often. About the only negative about Pence is that he can be streaky and he strikes out a lot. But he’s good for a 25/100 year and those players, especially these days, don’t just grow on trees.
And the Astros offense isn’t exactly potent to begin with. You take out Pence and we have nothing outside of Jeff Keppinger, Brett Wallace, and the carcass of Carlos Lee.
July 6th, 2011 at 6:29 PM
Given where the Astros are as an organization, I wouldn’t put any player on the “do not touch” list. Sure, i’d rather they keep Pence and the players you noted, but the reality is this team is 4 years from being a good MLB club again.
July 6th, 2011 at 6:31 PM
This is exactly why he’d look great in black and orange! I don’t put any stock in what they say on the radio either, but this is definitely one guy that I would love to see them at least kick the tires on.

Prior to this season I said 3-5 years. The wild card is what kind of owner Jim Crane turns out to be. I’d say he’s an even money bet to bounce Ed Wade. But is he going to sink serious money into free agency and signing draft picks or is he another Jeffrey Loria, Vince Naimoili, or David Glass?
If he’s of the latter stock, well then let me go ahead and introduce you to the next Pittsburgh Pirates. Because it’s going to be a long, long, long climb back to the top.

Well let me ask you this: what sorta prospects do you have? It would take at least one top-rated prospect and one decent prospect to make me even consider trading Pence. And if I was Wade I’d actually probably look for three prospects. Blue chip. No filler.

Oops, accidentally quoted my own post.
July 6th, 2011 at 6:37 PM
This cracks me up. The Pirates are an average team this year, and now all the fans/radio hosts think they can start buying/trading for real players before the deadline. Hunter Pence’s name has been floating around a lot this past week. Come on.

I know for a fact that the Pirates don’t have the prospects to land Pence. If we trade him it will be to a talent rich organization like Tampa, Minnesota, or someone else with a loaded farm system that we can raid.
July 6th, 2011 at 6:39 PM
Jack Wheeler (P) is their top prospect, and I’m really not sure about what kind of hitters they have aside from Belt. I wouldn’t mind dumping Jonathan Sanchez, Belt and a mid-level prospect for him though.

I wouldn’t touch that. But Wade might. And that’s frightening to me.
July 6th, 2011 at 6:42 PM
It’s actually Zach, idk what I was thinking.
July 6th, 2011 at 6:43 PM
Here’s what I just looked up real quick, not sure how credible it is…
July 6th, 2011 at 6:44 PM
That was going into this year, btw
July 6th, 2011 at 6:45 PM
somehow Tim Wakefield needs to throw 5 consecutive perfect games
July 6th, 2011 at 6:48 PM
Broccoli, if Pence was a few years into his prime, then I might be inclined to consider such a trade based on that. But he is really just starting to get really good.
/waits for Hunter Pence to inevitably tear his ACL.
July 6th, 2011 at 6:51 PM
can shithead wade even make trades at this point? I would hope all trade discussions would have to be cleared by Crane before anything could happen
July 6th, 2011 at 6:53 PM
That’s a good question Texans. Not sure. Crane does not technically own the team yet so he can’t order Wade to do, or not do, anything. But as Crane is allegedly thinking of canning him after he does take control (or after the season), I don’t think Wade has much leverage with teams right now.
July 6th, 2011 at 7:22 PM
Once Pedro Alvarez returns to the lineup the Pirates offense is going to be interesting. Next year we may have Taillon called up to our rotation. If that happens our starting pitching could potentially be better than it is this year. Can’t wait!!!

To call Favre a cartoon character would be a huge compliment to him and an even bigger insult to cartoon characters everywhere.
July 6th, 2011 at 7:57 PM
Somebody pop in the DVD of the 2009 NFC Championship Game. He’ll remember he’s got better things to do than get the shit kicked out of him.
July 7th, 2011 at 1:35 AM
Definitely not my headline or summary on the front page.
July 7th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
I vote for the lockout to continue if ending it means we have to hear about Brett Favre coming back again. Talk about an egomaniac ass clown.
