Russell Wilson Transfers to Wisconsin … Badgers Back to the Rose Bowl?
Russell Wilson, a productive and occasionally-elusive QB who had three very good years at NC State, has decided to transfer to Wisconsin. He’ll announce the decision on ESPN later today. Wilson will only have one year of eligibility remaining, but because he graduated in four years from NC State, he can play immediately.
Wilson’s decision – he selected Wisconsin over Auburn – turns the Badgers from 7-or-8 win, a pre-New Year’s Day bowl team into a Rose Bowl contender in the Big Ten.
He’ll have two of Wisconsin’s top three running backs returning (James White – 1,018 yards, 14 TDs) and Montee Ball (18 TDs), the Badgers’ No. 2 WR (Nick Toon – 36 catches, 3 TDs), and perhaps most importantly, three of five offensive lineman are back (though replacing monster left tackle, 1st round pick Gabe Carimi, will be impossible). It appears the biggest concern on offense is who else besides injury-prone Toon catches passes from Wilson.
The defense appears to only lose three starters (one of them is All-American JJ Watt, though).
Lastly, the all-important schedule: they get Nebraska at home (Saturday night, Jump Around, wheee!), visiting Michigan State and Ohio State back-to-back in October will be difficult, and the regular season finale is at home against Penn State. Assuming the Badgers are unbeaten going into the Nebraska game, Wisconsin would probably vault into the Top 10 with a victory over the Huskers. I’m not sure they can beat MSU and OSU on consecutive weekends, on the road, though.
Because of what went down at Ohio State this offseason, I think Wisconsin’s 10-2 record will be enough to win the “Leaders” division and reach the Big Ten title game, where it’ll play … Michigan State or Nebraska.

Really? Even w/o Wilson, five losses is hard to come up with given their schedule.
June 27th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
/Same thing was said in 2006
If nothing else this makes the upcoming season more interesting, been awhile since they’ve had a QB who’s a threat while scrambling plus is the best passer they’ve seen since Sorgi
June 27th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
Borland staying healthy the entire year will be key to the pass rush. The secondary is damn good, but it won’t matter much if the front seven can’t get to the QB. Eager to see how much Bielema adjusts to Wilson’s skill set and vice versa.
June 27th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
yeah 7-8 win team was way to low considering before this transfer I believe they had the 2nd best odds to win the conference behind the huskers.
June 27th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
their QBs pre-Wilson were garbage. 0 experience. check the spring game link in there.
teams would stack the line, stop the run, QBs would have nothing
June 27th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
Holy shit, a CFB post that doesn’t have an infuriating topic. Am I in the right place?
June 27th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
Crown ‘em.
I’m sure they can. MSU will come back to earth and be a 7-8 win team. OSU has either Joe Bauserman or a true frosh at QB and has other issues. Badgers should win B1G easily.
June 27th, 2011 at 1:27 PM
Using a spring game to project future production is amusing, and how often does a college team replace a quarterback with someone experienced? I doubt the school has been just recruiting bums at the position, this just puts off their development another year but it’s a move you have to make
June 27th, 2011 at 1:27 PM
Wisconsin’s presence in the Rose Bowl is immutable.
June 27th, 2011 at 1:27 PM
Also teams already do the former against the Badgers, doesn’t lead to the latter very often however
June 27th, 2011 at 1:28 PM
Nice, I’d head back out to Pasadena if given the chance even with the game being shamefully played on the 2nd
June 27th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
I’m no expert on UW football, but all the Bucky fans I know are (were?) looking forward to Budmayr.
June 27th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
Wisconsin has been ranked somewhere between 10-15 in just about every preseason poll I’ve seen, don’t think there was hardly anyone projecting this as a 7-8 win team, regardless of the QB situation.
June 27th, 2011 at 1:31 PM

June 27th, 2011 at 1:39 PM
I’m actually glad he didn’t choose Auburn. I think Barrett Trotter is going to put up better numbers than people are predicting this year.
June 27th, 2011 at 1:39 PM
with no QB, I’d give all those 4 tough games a loss. that’s 8-4.
could they have another random slip? Sure. that’d make 7-5.
is there a link to Wisconsin being a top 15 team pre-Wilson?

I wish Russell Wilson would have transferred to Syracuse. He would have fared better than the last QB to transfer with 1 year eligibility left.

June 27th, 2011 at 1:44 PM
You could have said “The fact the he has been a starting pitcher on the Cubs staff for three years is humorous”
but of course that would mean you actually went into detail and looked into things, which is too hard for you to do.

Does Wisconsin play OSU this year? because if OSU hated getting beat by the Badgers last year they’ll really not like playing against them this year.
June 27th, 2011 at 1:48 PM
Sorry Butters, deleted yours because it had a BR link.
I should have added a key word CREDIBLE.

obviously, credible is a subjective topic. carry on.
June 27th, 2011 at 1:49 PM
I’ll believe it when I see something other than vanilla extract on the cover of Wisconsin’s offensive playbook.
June 27th, 2011 at 1:49 PM
So, your base case prediction pre-Wilson was the same as their worst case scenario?
This is all irrelevant now, but five losses would’ve been a very dissapointing year for the Badgers even w/o Wilson.
June 27th, 2011 at 1:49 PM

June 27th, 2011 at 1:54 PM

June 27th, 2011 at 1:55 PM
Maybe I am wrong, but the links on the right have included piece on BR. My original statement was worded poorly, as most of my comments are.
They use links to BR, because not all BR articles are misinformed fanboys who open up an account.
Also there has been posts here which have linked BR, at least included info from an BR article. There are some credible people there, although about 95% of it is shit. However they do a good job at hiding that shit from their main page.

Lisk, it’s been a few years since I had that class in law school as well…but I think you’re pretty far off. I think the standard is reasonable suspicion not probable cause. They can observe the inside of the car to see if they see anything in plain view but they can’t search the glove box, etc. just because the driver could reach it. Otherwise, they have to get a warrant or suspect’s permission.

I’ll believe it when I see something other than vanilla extract on the cover of Wisconsin’s offensive playbook.
Perhaps Iowa should figure out how to use its timeouts properly before its fans can criticize another program’s offensive scheme. An offensive scheme that was still more sophisticated than that play-call by numbers scheme the national champs used last year.

June 27th, 2011 at 2:24 PM
A shot? In my highly biased but still educated opinion they should be the favorite of the East division. Very young team last year that actually improves by subtraction (fuck you Royster). People seem to forget that they started a true freshman and a walk on interception machine at QB last year. Bolden should be much better and Silas Redd is a bad man at RB.
June 27th, 2011 at 2:24 PM

June 27th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
Exactly,Wilson was whaffling on whether he was going to play football next season or go Baseball. Also TOB had a high touted 3rd year QB in Glennon who was threatening to transfer if he wasn’t at least given a shot at the starting QB position. With all those factors,TOB decided to give Glennon the starting job and told Wilson he was welcome to come back it was as the Back-up since he was going to miss all of Spring Football.
Wilson would of come back to NCSU after baseball if he was given a shot at the starting QB position but TOB said stuck to his guns and said he couldn’t have his cake and eat it too.I’m hoping Glennon’s power play works out well and he actually produces because if not, this season could become very painful soon, especially if Russell does as well with Badgers as expected.
June 27th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
Butters – werent ‘highly-regarded?’ That’s in the post? I must have missed it.
June 27th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
I can’t speak for Butters precisely, but I think it’s more what I alluded to before…it’s not your opinion that’s unfounded, it’s your belief that they were going to be lightly-regarded that’s unfounded.

Nebraska switched coordinators, has a starting white rb( a curse of epic proportions ask any sec team), Taylor Martinez vastly overrated , Wilson lead acc in passing tds 3 straight years , Wisconsin Brent Bielema is the evil twin of cop from the hangover seperated @ birth, Wisconsin night game vs Neb @ home, Wisconsin doesn’t pass on 3rd and two, team is legit and now that they have qb and Ohio state is ravaged with recruiting herpes someone from the OG Big Ten has to get a Rose Bowl birth…..Michigan seems to be dark horse…but I assure you nebraska has awful hard schedule, 0% chance

Between the schedule, the overrated coach who is liable to get himself fired with another outburst, the adjustment to playing teams with actual defenses, and a fragile overrated QB I’d agree.

D. Robinson is underrated and Hoke will coach em up….I expect Bama Saban like improvement without paying players roster bonuses

Russell will be a dominant force in the Big 10 or whatever it’s called these days.
