Jordan Hamilton Thinks He Fell in the Draft Because of Something Rick Barnes Said
Jordan Hamilton, a star at Texas and one of the most versatile scorers in last week’s NBA draft, was thought to be a lottery pick, but then mysteriously plummeted all the way to 26th. He was traded by Dallas, then traded to Portland and finally Denver. It actually won’t be a terrible fit – the Nuggets are losing JR Smith and Arron Afflalo is a better defensive player than an offensive one. Hamilton – who reminds me of Louisville scoring machine LaBradford Smith – should have a chance to produce as a rookie. But the fall from the lottery will cost Hamilton plenty of coin. He’s blaming his old coach, Rick Barnes.
“(Barnes) called some teams and said that I probably wasn’t coachable and things like that. But I feel I can be coachable”
He also told Tomasson that he “got some feedback” that led him to believe that information.
I’d make a Rick Barnes joke here, except that Barnes is a perpetual joke. The guy had three 1st round NBA picks, but couldn’t get out of the second round of the NCAA tournament? His teams chronically underachieve. And don’t give me this, “Rick Barnes is a great recruiter” line of hogwash, either – anyone could recruit kids to come play ball at Austin.

Barnes still doesn’t choke as hard as overrated, fraudy Bill Self.
June 27th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
It’s a good thing for Barnes that basketball is not seen as big as football in Texas. The Longhorns wouldn’t put up with someone like that running their football program!
June 27th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
Seriously, I mean look at the proud tradition of Texas basketball that went almost 60 years without a Final 4 appearance because they were recruiting so much talent to the University from 1947 until Rick Barnes got there!

It would be one thing if a GM or someone called up Barnes to get an opinion but unless Hamilton banged his daughter or something what’s to gain from a coach making an effort to shit on a player of his? This doesn’t make sense
June 27th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
Afflalo shot 50% from the field (mostly jumpers) and 42% from 3.
Also, this.

It will be interesting to see who replaces Mack Brown after another disappointing season. Already lost Muschamp, so the defense will be worse. Garret “interception” Gilbert wont get any better with that potato community guy running the offense.

can you?
doubt it

Before Rick Barnes, the last Elite Eight the Longhorns made was 1990. Before that, 1947. He’s made it three times in the last nine years, one time to the Final Four.
SUCKS!!!!!!

I’ll be happy when some of these Texas guys underachieve in the league. Last year it was Kentucky, this year Texas.

Never missed the tournament. JOKE!!!!!

Hamilton was a huge pain in the rear his freshman year.
From all accounts, he didn’t listen to coaching at all.
He worked his rear off before his sophomore year at Barnes’ pleading.
My guess is Barnes told any GM the entire story of Hamilton. Whoever relayed this info to Hamilton only told the negative part of the story.
June 27th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
He’s got pretty much the same tournament resume as the much lauded Bo Ryan. Granted, Bo Ryan does it with players like Brian Butch and Jon Leur; and Barnes couldn’t get out of the 2nd round with Kevin Durant.
June 27th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Barnes is a great recruiter. Much like Billy Donovan at Florida, he was able to turn a football school into a consistent winner in basketball. His teams have underachieved but between Clemson and Texas the guy has been to 16 straight NCAA tournaments (tied with Coach K for the longest active streak). Texas never produced guys like Kevin Durant and LaMarcus Aldridge in the pre-Barnes era.

If there’s one thing we can be sure of, it’s that whenever something negative happens to Jordan Hamilton, it’s somebody else’s fault, not Jordan Hamilton’s.

I love this myth. Sure, Young, Williams Benson and Sweed have been dubbed underachievers.
But many others have overachieved. Rogers, Hampton, Charles, Michael Griffin, Finley, Holmes.
Take a look at Florida draftees.

You weren’t saying anything inaccurate though. Guy throwing 86 MPH sinkers at people’s waists isn’t going to get it done in the Major Leagues.

Texas is a really attractive job there’s no doubt. I mean, where else can you go to coach where people don’t care about basketball unless you have the national player of the year (02-03, 06-07), otherwise, they don’t really go to games or give a shit about what’s going on with the team until they lose in the tournament. Texas would be better off firing the most successful coach they’ve ever had because he’s not living up to the expectations that were created because he built the program from practically scratch into a place where elite basketball talent wants to play. That would a fantastic idea and a major selling point to a potential replacement.

Tom Penders, valueless? I remember they were an elite 8 team (with Blanks, Mays and Wright) when I was in high school, so like 1990.
It’d be nice if this guy could keep some of these nimrods from being one and done when they need more work, but that’s endemic in college hoops.

I’d take Afflalo on my team in a heartbeat. Good defender, efficient scorer, solid teammate. Reminds me of Eddie Jones a little (though Afflalo is a better shooter). Dumars was an idiot for letting him get away.

yeah, but he had value in establishing the program. Old ATLDan had them playing in a high school gym, only halfcourt, until 1998, as if they hadn’t made the tournament each of the 10 prior years.
Tom Penders must have had an easy time recruiting, even though its not easy for this guy.
June 27th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
Why would Hamilton say that unless he thought there was reason for Barnes to say he wasn’t coachable. Even if Barnes is an idiot, and Hamilton has a point, it would make me nervous to pick a guy who after one day in the league is blaming coaches and making excuses, rather than being accountable and go-getting-em
June 27th, 2011 at 12:48 PM

June 27th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
ATLDan’s larger point is that Barnes has turned this into a top-flight program, something Pender nor anyone before him had done. Barnes is the best coach (with all that means in college athletics) the program has ever had. So when you call him a “perpetual joke” with about 100 words of explanation you have basically penned something I would expect to find on Bleacher Report.
June 27th, 2011 at 12:58 PM
I know you’re just being facetious, but in the interest of being correct… they hadn’t. They were 14-17 his last year and in the midst of scandal.
they had a good run under Penders, though. I realize he left in some disgrace, but it was a good job when Rick Barnes took it. And they’d been 10 years out of 12, including a couple of under achieving high seeds. So the standard was already set. Underachieve with talented players and too high a seeding.
June 27th, 2011 at 1:01 PM

Oh, I understand it. The EIC is a troll, and he watches about as much college basketball as he does any other sport.
But taking the Texas job and being sent to Siberia were not synonymous in 1998, which is all I’m saying. I disagree with the “practically from scratch” part from ATL Dan.
June 27th, 2011 at 1:01 PM
It’s easy to recruit for the longhorn’s basketball program? Not being a dick, I’m just asking. Football, sure. Basketball, I don’t know.

it probably is. It’s really easy to be a golden (or tall dark chocolate) god in Austin. That’s a huge college town.

Having 2 players taken 26 and 29 in the “Worst NBA Draft in 20 Years” means Rick Barnes is a joke? C’mon TBL you are better than that.
June 27th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
He was a decent scorer, but hardly a scoring machine. never averaged more than 16ppg.
June 27th, 2011 at 3:53 PM
It was well documented that Hamilton was one of the least athletic players in the Draft.
June 28th, 2011 at 9:29 AM
He’s not coachable and he’s not athletic enough to make a difference in the NBA.
