Athletes in the 21st Century: Darnell Dockett Live-Tweets His Encounter with Maryland* Police
The greatest thing that happened on the internet today was when Darnell Dockett, the mouthy defensive end of the Arizona Cardinals, got pulled over by police in Maryland*. Dockett began tweeting about the encounter in real-time because police wanted to search his car. Read from the bottom up.
It could just be that the cop who pulled Dockett over was a Ravens fan. You know they hook those guys up.
* Dockett was in Maryland for a free football camp over the weekend, and didn’t give off any indications he had gone back to Arizona. However, he could have been in DC or even Virginia. But in my experiences with police in the area, I would have to guess it was Maryland police. They’re the worst.

OSU fans = worst
MD cops = worst
/scribbles in notebook
June 27th, 2011 at 6:47 PM
I would have to guess it was Maryland police. They’re the worst.
I would agree with this. Of course, DC cops are terrible in completely the other way (do nothing)
June 27th, 2011 at 6:53 PM
AZ Cops are the worst. Maryland cops are just cranky because they can’t sit home all day to drink natty bo and eat fries with old bay
June 27th, 2011 at 6:54 PM
Maryland staties are complete pieces of shit.
June 27th, 2011 at 6:58 PM
I’m pretty sure if you are out driving around your are in PUBLICK. And they can search your car. Seen it hundreds of times in NY.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:04 PM
If you’re walking in public, you’re on the public streets but your vehicle is always a private vehicle.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:05 PM
yeah you can always turn down a search request. its just up to the cops if they want to get a warrant or not
June 27th, 2011 at 7:06 PM
I believe the worst state cops answer is Virginia…yeah Virginia. Had a friend driving 67 in a 65 and got pulled over and got a $200 fine. Fuck VA.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:09 PM
Fuck you Canada.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:16 PM
Had a friend driving 67 in a 65 and got pulled over and got a $200 fine.
I had something like that in Texas about 15 years ago. I’ve driven through Kerrville, TX 6 times (it’s on the 10) and had something terrible happen to me on 5 of those trips.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:18 PM
have been driving up and down 95 south forever and Maryland is always the state you really slow down in because the cops are gangster and hide. i’d say they’re more vigilant than the troopers who roam the NJTPKE.
VA State troopers are the best!
/waves to family friend who is a trooper in VA
June 27th, 2011 at 7:18 PM
Worst cops in the area = PG County Cops. VA State Police are the best in disguising their tax collecting scheme in the form of enforcing “aggressive driving” laws.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:19 PM
that’s horrendous. i almost don’t believe it. i thought all state police gave drivers 7 free MPH over the limit?
June 27th, 2011 at 7:23 PM
One of my high school football coaches was a sheriff and had a fellow officer that put his patrol car on cruise control at the speed limit and would pull anyone over who would pass him.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:26 PM

tickets in speed traps are probably a major source of income for Kerrville TX.
There used to be a little town between where we lived and South Padre Island. All there was there was a place to get nachos and a speed trap. If you remembered that you needed to get nachos, then you didn’t have to worry about the speed trap.
But the people that didn’t know about the nachos had trouble getting from 55 to 30 very quickly.
These days I’m a white person, so I don’t ever have any trouble with the cops. I would have let those cops search my car, no problem. But they wouldn’t have wanted to search my car.
I’m sure darnell docket, Darrell, and TBL have a different perspective than me, undoubtedly justifiable.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:27 PM

nope. YOu have to be dumb enough to say yes, you can search it.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:28 PM

They pull that on the PA turnpike. Just creates a huge traffic jam.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:29 PM
Wait…Darrell’s not white?
June 27th, 2011 at 7:30 PM
If I was ever driving through Texas like that, I’d probably be smoking and would definitely be stopping for some nachos.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:31 PM
One of the parents of the kids on my sons travel baseball got pulled over for a taillight out. He accused her of having pot in her car. No way she did. He let her go.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:34 PM
Never had my car searched. Once would have resulted in an arrest (had a case in the trunk, we were 18 back at the high school homecoming game, and my buddy had to drive because i was already drunk at like 7 pm).
also, had no idea we had so many NOVA-DC-MD readers in the house.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:38 PM

Only one of my bad times there was a speeding ticket, though. The others were just horrible luck (brakes went out once, hit a deer once, blew a tire). Actually, I remember that one of my events there actually wasn’t that bad – I got pulled over in a speed trap but got out of it because I had something like a cross on the dashboard. The cop said, “that’s a good guy to have on your side” and I took the cue to act pious. This was at about 3 in the morning and I was maybe going 5 mph over the limit. But no ticket, so that was good
June 27th, 2011 at 7:38 PM
Any chances we can get a USA women’s soccer preview post? I’d mainly just like to see a nice pic of Hope Solo. She could use her hands on me any day.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:39 PM
Obligatory
June 27th, 2011 at 7:40 PM
Never had my car searched.
once the cops asked me. They screamed in behind my pickup as I was pulling into the apartment building where i lived. it was a pretty crummy, 99% black neighborhood, and there were reports of somebody shooting a gun out of a black pickup. I (high as a kite, pretty mellow) pointed out that my truck was dark green.
They wanted to search it (they were looking for guns), so I opened it up and let them go at it.

Mantis… I saw the McGuire news earlier. Just dreadful.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:48 PM

I don’t think it’s that many, just people with experience in the area. I grew up in Arlington til I was 13 and still have a brother and a sister in the area but I think I’ve been in L.A. more than D.C. at this point
June 27th, 2011 at 7:59 PM
The only time I’ve ever really been harassed by the cops was for something I never even did. I was 17 and had just cashed my paycheck from Lucky’s (it was like $160) and stopped by an AM/PM to get some candy. Another car pulled up as I was getting out and this Asian guy (probably mid-20′s) got out and called to me. When I turned to him he had his hand in his jacket and said to get in the car. When I said I wasn’t getting in the car, he said he had a knife and would stab me if I didn’t give over my wallet. So me being scared as shit, just handed it over and they took off. When I went to the cops and told the story, I got accused for lying to the police because it was probably me buying drugs and having a drug deal gone bad. I’m sitting in the police station with my mom after getting mugged and I’m the victim?? hahaha, fucking cops.

Superbad is on FX. Great, great comedy flick.
Michael Cera was so money.
also, RIP Lorenzo Charles
June 27th, 2011 at 8:18 PM
Ahhhh Swingers, one of my favorite movies of all time. Superbad is up there too, just not quite as high as Swingers to me.
June 27th, 2011 at 8:19 PM
Shit, forgot to bold the “money” part. Now it looks like I don’t know what I’m talking about.
/I usually don’t

that’s horrendous. i almost don’t believe it. i thought all state police gave drivers 7 free MPH over the limit? TBL
I go 9 over in Kansas on the interstate and turnpike. Not an issue. My brother works in the local media and tells me, that unless you are looking sketchy (profiling), the cops could care less as long as you are in between the lines and not on a cell phone. Cops hate cell phone drivers, apparently. Kansas just upped the speed limit to 75. I doubt I will push that one to 9 over. Olderish truck if I’m by myself or kid in the the wife’s SUV if we are traveling.

This is what people mean about TBLAD being dead. normally, there’d be some chatter. This is a ghost town.
June 27th, 2011 at 9:40 PM
Thats awesome, F the pigs, dont let em hassle you big man.

June 27th, 2011 at 9:40 PM
Where the hell is the chat about college baseball, reds-rays, and wrestling? Hmmm…maybe a post about Ohio State would get some attention…..
June 27th, 2011 at 9:41 PM
Clay, it’s a monday night and there’s nothing going on in the sports world. twitter’s dead. TV is dead. there’s nothing going on. pretty soon I’m going to fire up Mad Men, seasons 1 and 2 and 3 to catch up before that show comes back. i also have the wire, seasons 3-the end to watch.
June 27th, 2011 at 9:49 PM
Been pulled over 3 times in my life (not counting campus police) and only gotten one ticket. Received warnings the other two times including one time I was going 90 in a 70.
June 27th, 2011 at 9:50 PM
I got pulled over by the Arizona highway patrol for doing 53 in a 55 (construction) zone. His real reason for stopping me was to give me a ticket for not using my seatbelt.
June 27th, 2011 at 10:00 PM
I’ve never seen MadMen either, and I’ve had the first season on DVD for a year. I don’t omw whyi don’t watch it. I’m on battleatar galactica now.
June 27th, 2011 at 10:01 PM
105 in a 65, 90 in a 65, 88 in a 65, 55 in a 35, 46 in a 35
/needs a 5 mile radius radar detector
June 27th, 2011 at 10:09 PM
I think that’s the point though, right? TBLAD used to get a bunch of comments every weeknight, and now the only time is if there is a major event. That’s what people mean when they say TBLAD is dead.
June 27th, 2011 at 10:18 PM
I’ve never seen MadMen either, and I’ve had the first season on DVD for a year. I don’t omw whyi don’t watch it. I’m on battleatar galactica now. Dirt
I still have my brother’s The Wire by my DVD player. Spring/Summer time. All my free time is taking care of the yard or the boy’s t-ball practices. I need a good three day blizzard and I’ll watch it.
/I have never seen Mad Men or GoT. Currently looking forward to the rest of the Wilfred season. I got out of The Killing after episode 104. I just got to accept that I’ll find and invest in good shows and bad shows and take chances on absurd cable comedies. There are a lot of channels out there and I enjoy sitting outside this time of year.
June 27th, 2011 at 10:18 PM
So stop watching BG and start watching Mad Men. Or do both. Whatever you do, start watching Mad Men.
June 27th, 2011 at 10:25 PM
Yeah yeah, eventually. I’d rather it came on in reruns, so I could DVR it. I dont like shows on DVD for some reason.
June 27th, 2011 at 10:26 PM
I just used red laser on my phone for the first time. It’s pretty cool.
June 27th, 2011 at 10:30 PM

Florida is absolutely blowing the first game of this never-ending College World Series. Some of the play looks like Little League level.
June 27th, 2011 at 11:36 PM
In a tie game, Florida had the bases loaded and no outs and didn’t score in the 9th, had a guy thrown out at the plate from second on a single in the 10th, and now a SC runner stole second, ball went way into center field, and then the throw to third ended up in the stands…go-ahead run scores from first on a stolen base after two errors. Yikes!
June 27th, 2011 at 11:49 PM
Any college baseball fans in here? What a game.

Punked the cops.

Starbuck is a slut, but hotter than your average skank. Six isn’t my taste but Boomer is amazing. I’d sell my house to be her cabin boy.
As for the po-po, cars are regarded as private property, but do not have the same protections that private homes have. It’s a gray zone between walking in public (the moment you’re least protected) and being at home in your den (the moment you’re most protected). Generally, the police have to ask for your consent to search your car. If you don’t give it, they can arrest you on suspicion and search your car anyway. They had rather NOT do that because it’s embarrassing when they don’t find anything. DD was well within his rights, and smartly used them.
June 28th, 2011 at 5:36 PM
D Dockett is too funny.
if only he had been recording video of this….
it’s a shame he doesn’t get the credit he deserves for being one of the top Dlinemen in the game
