Craig James Definitely Looks Like He’s Running For Office
All, College Football, Politics, Video June 24th. 2011, 4:30pm
Craig James has started an advocacy group, Texans for a Better America and inflicted a three-minute infomercial about himself on the Internet. The only rational explanation? He plans to run for office in Texas, probably for the 2012 Senate seat. Not sure how parlaying elite football talent into an elite football career constitutes an entrepreneurial spirit, but we know he has experience working backchannels and getting results. He should have a bright future. [Video via Dr. Saturday]

He should move to Oklahoma. They elected Steve Largent and J.C. Watts.
Craig James has enough smarm radiating off of him that this move towards becoming a politician is unsurprising. And I say that as an SMU alum.

The first thing on his agenda is making sure there are lights in all sheds at the Texas Tech campus.

One of the greatest things I’ve ever seen.

Did he mention that the camera crew locked him in an electrical closet to film the thing?

The first 10 seconds of that video are beautiful

I think that CPK ad on the right is going to win out. Margherita pizza here I come.

Having watched the video now, I’m going to go ahead and say he’s a Republican.

Having known that he lives in Texas, I’m going to go ahead and say he’s a Republican.

Thing is that plays to where he’s running. And I wouldn’t put it past him to win.

A celebrity’s or athlete’s political leanings can sometimes catch you by surprise.

Eh, we’ll see. If he does run as a Republican, the Republican bench for statewide office is pretty deep. David Dewhurst, the current Lt. Governor, is widely considered the favorite for any statewide contest he gets into, including a Senate seat. And Greg Abbott, the Attorney General, isn’t too far behind. So James wouldn’t just be able to waltz into office against some weak Democrat.

MS did you see Texas Monthly named Dewhurst one of the worst legislators this year?

If he could get fired from ESPN, that would be great

His son is a bitch

No I missed that.
The thing with Dewhurst is that he hasn’t really made any mistakes as Lt. Governor. That’s important given that Texas is structured so that the Lt. Governor has a lot of power. He’s flown under the radar because Perry is such a telegenic loud mouth. He’s also one of the richest people in the state and could self-finance a campaign.

True, but James has instant name/face recognition. That cuts through the noise.

This somehow just seems perfect.

Yes at first. But name recognition is only good for initial support. If you can’t raise money or run a campaign worth a damn, then the fact that people know you doesn’t do shit.
As exhibit A I submit the Fred Thompson presidential campaign in 2008, which came immediately on the heels of him being a regular on Law and Order for several seasons and having previously been a U.S. Senator.
As exhibit B I submit the unfolding mess that is the Newt Gingrich campaign this year.

I think James may just be dipping his toes into the political pool to see what kind of interest he’d get. This may just be a trial run for something later on down the line.

Did he hire the narrator from Pushing Daises? I kept waiting for the voice to be like “The Piemaker was unhappy, because he wants to help America become more like his beloved Texas”

Craig James is horribly annoying…I can’t take his commentary.
