Even the Rose Bowl Bows For King NFL
New Years Day falls on a Sunday. Meaning the timeless college football bowl system must kowtow to King NFL. Sun. Jan 1 will feature 16 NFL football games. The New Years day slate, including the “Grandaddy of them All,” the Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO, will be played on Mon. 2, when nearly everyone is flying home. It’s dumb. Even if they initially moved the games for blue laws.
It seems America’s societal fabric could withstand the playing of college and professional football on the same day. Considering the league asks two teams to play in London mid-season, a Saturday night game does not seem so unreasonable. What’s the argument against this? Is the league worried the Rose Bowl would deflect attention? Or, would the league be worried that, juxtaposed against college football with fantasy season over and little gambling, the league might be exposed for the staid, formulaic product it is?
Arguing against the NFL’s whims is, like trying to take Asia in Risk, pointless. That said, the Rose Bowl is a genuine, more than a century-old American tradition. The NFL Sunday is one of many NFL Sundays. Blue Laws are out of vogue. The Rose Bowl should be immutable, on New Years Day. [Photo via Getty]

you really purchase your airline tickets a long time in advance.

That’s racist.
June 19th, 2011 at 5:06 PM
Not once but twice does Ty say there are 17 NFL games on that day. 32/2 = 16.
June 19th, 2011 at 5:10 PM
Haha, I’m watching UVA-Cal in the College World Series and there’s some guy who shows up in certain camera angles wearing both a Minnesota Golden Gophers hat and a Minnesota Lynx (WNBA) t-shirt. Talk about wearing a lot of suck.

I really wish I could comment on this post.

This isn’t about conflicting times. Fourteen of the 16 NFL games are at 1:00 ET.
they move a lot of those games, I think. They just set them up at 1pm on paper, but they end up showing the most relevant ones, and they feature some at 4.15.

the rose bowl has also been played on days other than January 1 six times since 1978. So it won’t bring about the end of the world.
And I think that might make it mutable, as opposed to immutable.

June 19th. 5:00 pm. The exact moment that Ty Duffy became a complete caricature of himself. Mariotti, Bayless, and Whitlock are jealous. It took them years to be completely self-aware bafoons.

Thank you, Dirt. You saved me a Google search. I knew the Rose Bowl wasn’t always on 1/1.

I guess I’m one of the rare few that won’t be on a plane that day. On Jan. 2, 2012, this poor sap will be stuck on his couch perfectly capable of watching whatever game he pleases. Hope all you other suckers have a nice flight while missing out on the Rose Bowl.
June 19th, 2011 at 5:52 PM
So the Rose Bowl will be played on Monday, January 2nd at 5 PM eastern time? Or will they move it to 8? Lame either way, I’m with you, Duffy.
June 19th, 2011 at 5:58 PM
I’m pretty sure there is a night game that day (see: Seattle/St Louis SNF for the divison last year) so moving it to 8pm ET doesn’t solve much. Also, the following Monday is the first since Week 1 that won’t have MNF so football fans get to watch the Rose Bowl instead of nothing.

I used wikipedia, but it just pops right up. It’s like 14 times out of 100 that it’s been OFF the first. Immutable my ass.

I’m surprised it took this long for someone to say this.

You do realize that NBC has a flex game week 17 right? Probably would help to do some research. Advertisers will love having to choose between games.
There’s no Monday night football week 17 so it makes sense to be in primetime on a Monday night. I would love to see you walk in and pitch your idea to ESPN/ABC. “So, let’s play the Rose Bowl on Sunday night opposite the last NFL regular season game of the season on NBC. No, no, I know we’ll get trounced in the ratings and have advertisers that will be rightly pissed off that we made them choose, but this is THE ROSE BOWL, WE BOW TO NO ONE.” You would be fired in 5 seconds.
Horrendous.

The Rose Bowl has never been played on a Sunday as far as I can tell. The game moving to January 2nd goes back to 1922, when the NFL was in its infancy and College football was still king.
So the bowls moving not playing on Sunday is a tradition itself.
June 19th, 2011 at 7:03 PM
so this Rory guy isn’t bad, huh?

I just did the same thing. Literally every single time ever that January 1 has been on a Sunday, they have moved the Rose Bowl off of that day.
This is as wrong a post as wrong gets. This post might even be immutable.
June 19th, 2011 at 7:40 PM
They started doing this in the old days so the parade wouldn’t bother people in church on Sundays, and have done it ever since. As everyone else has stated, it’s nothing new.
June 19th, 2011 at 7:50 PM
No, but this post was…nice to see your “college football writer” has such a sound understanding of the Rose Bowl
June 19th, 2011 at 8:11 PM
it’s even worse after it got “fixed.”
June 19th, 2011 at 8:29 PM
You gotta love a post that still exists even though it’s been proven incorrect.
June 19th, 2011 at 8:40 PM
Ty, I don’t mean to keep nitpicking but the punctuation and sentence structure of the first paragraph is just poor. Make the first two sentences one sentence with a comma thrown there in the middle. Also, it still says 17 games. You’ll never get 17 games on one day unless the NFL expands. Just proofread the damn post before hitting “submit”

Good to see Ty still takes offense when his fact checking (or lack thereof) is called out.

doubleheader bro.
June 19th, 2011 at 9:06 PM
This might be a story if there was going to be an NFL season, but it is looking like there wont be. Maybe the Rose bowl should have stepped up and said to the NLF, “We are not moving the date, according to you, you are not even playing, so why should we care about you?”
At least maybe that might have added some pressure to fix this stupid NFL situation.
June 19th, 2011 at 9:13 PM
What a terrible post. From the “17″ games to this inane statement “when nearly everyone is flying home.” and to the fact that the Rose Bowl was just played on January 4th in 2006. Never mind January 2nd in ’95, ’89, ’84, ’78, etc
June 19th, 2011 at 9:36 PM
Not to mention January 3, 2002. Miami-Nebraska national title game.
June 19th, 2011 at 9:48 PM
January 3, 2002. Miami-Nebraska national title game. With all due respect, Nebraska is no longer playing in the “push over conference”, it may be a while before they get anywhere near a Championship game.

Anyone else wonder why the hell he is using italics? Did Duffy drop acid and chew some shrooms before shitting this column out?
June 20th, 2011 at 8:23 AM
But seriously, fuck you AMC
June 20th, 2011 at 8:25 AM
But seriously, fuck you AMC
did you read the interview alan sepinwall did with veena sud, and his subsequent review? Or the other screed that popped up on the twitter last night?
What a sloppy fucking shit mess that was. I guess they were thinking “what a twist,” but since the show was never remotely tidy, having such a fucking lousy twist at the end only made it 50 times worse.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:26 AM
No I didnt read the interviews. I was ready to accept the super boring ending of it just being the councilman, even if I didnt like it, I could respect it. Now I’m just gonna pretend that I was right and that the current mayor did it, and that’s who Holder was working for.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:31 AM
No I didnt read the interviews
you should. It’s nice to read TV reviewers lose their shit about such a shitty, shitty show.
I honestly dont’ give a fuck who Holder is working for, or whether the guy is actually dead, because fuck that show. They can’t possibly expect me to go back next year to that same stupid situation, where one lady doesn’t recognize the guy who abducted and beat her husband nearly to death, or where a grieving mom (who is so strict her daughter turns tricks part time without the mom’s knowledge) just bails on her family because she’s sad, after the dad is guaranteed years in prison.
And now that other skank likes Belko? And on and on and on.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:32 AM
so I want to know what happened that was so awful about the Killing’s ending. spoil it right here, right now cause I’ve not watched an episode and I’m not going to, but I still want to be in the loop.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:40 AM
Mize -
I quit watching it after the fourth episode. I’m going to read the review on whatever whenever it pops up this morning. I’m ready for some fucking zombie killing and meth making and paying attention to good shows.
“so this Rory guy isn’t bad, huh?”
Classic TBL.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:44 AM
I thought the Zombie killing one was only eh.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:47 AM
I thought the Zombie killing one was only eh.
The first episode was awesome and it sort of slid downhill, but I watched it. We’ll see what happens with season 2.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:49 AM
“What’s the argument against this?”
Just read the Rose Bowl post. Is this the new, “NO ONE DENIES THIS?”?
June 20th, 2011 at 8:53 AM
Miz: we were expecting to find who the killer was in the final episode. Instead we were given an episode where they seemingly caught the guy only to find out he didnt actually do it. Who did it? Who knows. Waste of a season.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:58 AM
cj – oh. thanks. sounds like a very anticlimactic ending. are they setting up for a second season?
June 20th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
Just read the Rose Bowl post. Is this the new, “NO ONE DENIES THIS?”?
you had to see it in its original form to truly appreciate the mess up there.
June 20th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
If they had known all along this was out it was supposed to play out, you could almost give them a break on it.
But you have to believe they decided to throw this “twist” in after it got picked up for a second season.
Fuck them.
June 20th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
I think I would have been alright with the killing ending if they hadn’t done overkill on the mini twists and red herrings throughout. I don’t mind that the season didn’t conclude without revealing the killer and think that this made me a bit more interested in Holder going in to next year. Although I’d rather that be for ego or career advancement rather than some conspiracy that they seem to be teasing.
June 20th, 2011 at 9:18 AM
What kills it for me(pun intended) was the way they are claiming that they never meant to have us believe that the murder would be solved neatly, even when they marketed the show all season with “Who Killed Rosie Larsen”
June 20th, 2011 at 9:25 AM
What kills it for me(pun intended) was the way they are claiming that they never meant to have us believe that the murder would be solved neatly, even when they marketed the show all season with “Who Killed Rosie Larsen”
exactly. And all the stalling. There are several episodes along the way where they gave us literally nothing. There are far more fizzled out sideways plotlines than there are actual plotlines, and the plotlines that still exist were not interesting.
I wager half of the people who tuned in last night only did to find out who killed Rosie. And less than 1/4th will be back next year.
June 20th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
“If she would have just turned left, she would have made…” (cries)
Great acting, Linden.
June 20th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
So wait…Holder was a plant all along meant to, I’m guessing, derail Richmond’s campaign. If that’s the case, why wasn’t he pushing early on for Richmond to be the suspect instead of Ahmed? Ugh…
And the confrontation between Linden and RIchmond near the end was terrible.
June 20th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
I’m more pissed off about the direction of the investigation.
You’re telling me THIRTEEN fucking days later, “oh hey maybe we should see where the car has been”.
Barney Fife would have run a more competent investigation.
June 20th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
The stupidity that The Killing devolved into…I basically have no words.
However…this post is even stupider. It very well might be the most ill-informed thing ever to appear on this website. Anybody who knows anything about college football traditions are well-aware that in the halcyon days of New Year’s Day bowl games (that is, when the big 4 Rose, Sugar, Cotton, & Orange) were all traditionally played on New Year’s Day…they ALWAYS moved ALL the games when the 1st was on a Sunday to the 2nd.
Beyond comical.
June 20th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
So glad I bailed on the Killing.
