Ballin’: DeShawn Stevenson’s Showboating, Props to Rick Carlisle & Where Does Dirk Rank on the Best Power Forward List?
We’ll have all summer to mock LeBron’s choking ways, so let’s start with some positives, shall we? Let’s give some props to the Dallas Mavericks, your 2011 NBA Champions.
* Confession: I never thought much of Rick Carlisle in Detroit or Indiana, but he flat-out embarrassed Eric Spoelstra in the coaching department in the Finals. The Mavericks won every 4th quarter in games 2-6. Inserting JJ Barea into the starting lineup worked out. We’ll get to LeBron’s struggles in a couple posts today, but between the Dallas zone and the the help defense on LeBron, the Mavericks did a great job keeping him out of the lane.
* Congrats, Jason Kidd. Hope things are going swimmingly with Porschla Coleman. It took him 17 years (and three different teams), but he finally got a title … with the team that originally drafted him in 1994. Does he retire a champion at 38?
* Congrats, DeShawn Stevenson. He’s one of the biggest characters in the league, has an ego significantly larger than his skill level, and he figured prominently (in the first half) of game six:
A few minutes after that pimp walk in the first half, the Heat’s Udonis Haslem “got back” at Stevenson.
* Congrats to Dirk. He started 1-for-12, but finished 9-for-27, and as usual, he was clutch when it mattered (10 points in the 4th quarter). After a LeBron jumper cut it to 92-84 with 6:33 left, Dirk scored to push the lead back to 10. Wade scored in traffic with 3:27 left to cut the lead to eight, but Dirk answered with a tough jumper. He was magnificent.
* If you’re re-adjusting your modern “All-time Power Forward Rankings” this morning, what to do with Dirk? I still think Tim Duncan is the benchmark, but does a title – and more specifically, Dirk’s averaging 26-10 in the Finals – put him ahead of Charles Barkley? Where does he rank compared to Kevin Garnett? What about Karl Malone? I definitely don’t think you can put Dirk ahead of Mailman or Barkley, but I think a case could be made for Dirk > KG.
* Remember when Mike Bibby agreed to give up $6.2 million to join the Heat for a shot at a title? I hope his wife is happy with that decision. Bibby, who doesn’t have long left in his career (he’s 33), was awful in the playoffs. He started every postseason game except last night’s game – he didn’t play one minute – and shot a pathetic 28% from the field and 25% from three. He had 17 turnovers and 23 assists.
* Remember Corey Brewer? He was dealt from Minnesota to New York in the Carmelo Anthony deal, but eventually was cut. Smart choice to sign with Dallas, right? The former Florida Gators’ star (two titles with them) didn’t play a minute in the Finals, but is still an NBA champion. With the Mavericks almost certain to let guys like Stevenson and Peja walk (and Barea might be too expensive to keep, considering Butler and Chandler will need new deals), Brewer likely makes the rotation next season.

Bleeeeccchhh. Of all the teams to win this year….the Lakers trying to three-peat, the Celtics’s final gasp, the decision in Miami, OKC as the future of the west, the last of the Spurs, Rose as MVP and the Bulls’ D….and we get this steaming pile of poo as an NBA champ?? The Mavs? The MAVS?!?!?! Nobody picked them to do shit and most ‘experts’ predicted they would be a first round upset casualty…for good reason.
Billy Hunter and David Stern better get their shit together so we can have another season and get rid of the stink of this hot jump shooting NBA champ that couldn’t beat any other NBA champ over the last 30 years. And everyone is fanboy of this mediocrity because big bad LeBron left Cleveland for Miami….Klosterman needs to do a 6000 word piece on how this perfectly represents the decline of the US… we now root against excellence because our wittle feewings were hurt over shit that has nothing to do with the game on the floor.
So score one for the losers…I thinkTom Petty sang a few lines about it…lets just go ahead and make it our new anthem.
I repeat: bleeeeccchhh

Where Does Dirk Rank on the Best Power Forward List?
somewhere, and as a guy with a ring!
Yay!
June 13th, 2011 at 9:52 AM
Wow 3rd man. Wow
June 13th, 2011 at 9:52 AM
Does he retire a champion at 38?
he just signed a 3 year deal last year, for like 8 million per. And they have guys that will let him rest. My dad thinks he’s keeping a seat warm for Deron Williams. My dad is in a really good mood.

Dirk’s a power forward?
June 13th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
He was good with both of those teams.
June 13th, 2011 at 9:54 AM
Kobe > LeBron
June 13th, 2011 at 9:54 AM
Clearly not, but keep trying. It might eventually stick.
June 13th, 2011 at 9:54 AM
(and Barea might be too expensive to keep, considering Butler and Chandler will need new deals), Brewer likely makes the rotation next season.
I’m not sure Cuban knows from “too expensive to keep.” I’m pretty sure the Mavs are going to be rolling in capital, and I’m equally sure that absolutely no version of the salary cap will stop a team from signing its own players, regardless of what that does to their cap situation.
There’s no way they can jump to a hard cap in one off season. That transition will have to be very gradual.
June 13th, 2011 at 9:56 AM
Dirk’s a power forward?
not really. Dirk’s a 3 on a team that plays with two 3′s, except he’s not a very good defender.
You know who played a really good series for Miami? Haslem. Much respect to Haslem.
June 13th, 2011 at 9:56 AM
Lakers, Thunder, Heat. One of the more impressively dominant runs in recent memory, only needed six games once. Way too much focus on Heat, Mavs won this.
June 13th, 2011 at 9:56 AM
I’ve never understood this sentiment. The guy’s NBA coaching record is right at .600 with only one losing season and 6 fifty-win seasons with two conference finals appearances. He can coach my team any day.
June 13th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
Deshawn Stevenson needs his own reality show
June 13th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
Dirk > KG? Agree.
So Dirk goes 9-27 10 points in the 4th = CLUTCH!!
Kobe 6-24 in Game 7 had 14 Rebounds (as a SG) plays mind blowing defense, hit big free throws, helps lead his team back from a 13 point 4th Qtr deficit in a Game 7 and that = UNCLUTCH
/Blow Me.
//Kobe >> Lebron.

Don’t go dragging Tom Petty’s good name into your nonsensical rant.

well, he did inherit some decent teams. it’s not like he got crap and molded it into a title winner (obvious counter: Who does that?)

NO! No. Ignore him. For the love of God ignore him.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:01 AM

it’s just hate. There’s no way to do anything with it one way or the other. It’s just hate. it’s not like tomorrow we could line up the 1999 Spurs against these Mavericks and see who would win.
So it’s just bullshit you say when you wanted these guys to fail, because they swept out the Lakers.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
Is it just me or does Chalmers fit in wonderfully with this group of douchebags? That dude needs and ass kicking badly.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
Why is Kobe being talked about here? They didn’t win a game in the second round
let’s just take a day to be happy about the Mavs, before devolving into Kobe>Lebron.
A bunch of old ringless guys who pass the ball and get good shots, and practice those shots so they’ll be ready, and a scheme that allows them all to play really good defense for 5-6 minutes a game, at the end.
Tyson Chandler no longer has to hear about Eddy Curry, either. He’s made a name for himself beyond “alley-oop catcher for Chris Paul.”
June 13th, 2011 at 10:04 AM
Dirk went 1-12 in the first half and 8-15 in the second, including the 10 fourth quarter points you referred to.
Sounds like a clutch second half, anyway.

love it. 3 point shots are easy when you practice them, and shoot them when you are open (and square to the basket).
June 13th, 2011 at 10:05 AM
Who does that?)
No one really ‘molds’ teams anymore b\c there are so few GM\Coaches. Rick did a great job. He won 4 series against supposedly superior opponents. Including the defending champs, the young up and comers, and the super villians. Give him his due credit.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:05 AM
and 8-15 in the second
those were tough jumpers too, in the 4th. Cash mf-ing money.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:05 AM
I quote my friend on Rick Carlisle in Detroit: “He took a 32 win team to 50 wins in his first season…The following season he would coach the team to the Eastern Conference Finals…”

Was that Wade that dropped to the floor on the way back to the locker room? Holy moley. It was just before they showed Bosh bawling like a girl. I swear, the basketball gods outdid themselves this time.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
He was the first to say after the game that he wasn’t all that good but when push came to shove in the 4th he was the one putting home jumpers late to seal the deal…a deserving MVP
June 13th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
Inherited a 32-50 Pistons team and made it a 50-32 team. That’s quite a turnaround. Inherited a 48-win INdiana team that lost in the first round and made it a 61-win team that went to the conference finals.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
Also, to add to that his teams defeated 4 of the best 8-10 players in the league.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
Was thinking about their two careers last night. Amazing how far he’s come since those early Bulls years.

Somewhere, Jerry Krause is smiling for made that trade with the Clips on draft night in 2001. Probably feels vindicated by Chandler’s postseason and his development as a vocal leader on this Mavs team.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:08 AM
Was that Wade that dropped to the floor on the way back to the locker room?
It was Bosh. I’m not a Bosh fan, but at least it showed how much he cares. Could be his only shot if they decide to move him for different parts this summer.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
To be fair those Pacer teams were better than their win totals but were dealing with having Isiah Thomas as the head coach
Carlisle knows what he’s doing and showed it in this postseason
Trading him and signing Ben Wallace was bad even for a John Paxson move
June 13th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
I’ve been a fan of Dirk’s since my freshmen year of college. I lived with a guy for 4 years who is the biggest Dallas sports fan I know (yes, even the fucking cowboys). Watching Dirk finally get a title was great to see. 2006 was rough to watch, but beating this Miami team was probably worth it for Dirk and Jason Terry. There are a lot of tools in the NBA (Kidd beating on his wife qualifies) but it feels like one of the good guys won a title last night, and that’s always great to see.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:10 AM

Wait, didn’t the Bulls give up on Chandler? Not sure how one can feel vindicated by seeing a guy you gave up on win the title with another team?
June 13th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
I never understood Spence’s hate for DWade until now. He is a flopping bitch, plays the “media hates us” card constantly, and isn’t even man enough to admit they were poking fun at Dirk. Just a complete punk in every way.

whenever you start to complain about that going forward, picture Dirk in your head driving to the bucket to win 2 of these 4 games. That’s clutch, dude.
I can see how you can take it out of baseball, since it’s the same every at bat. But this guy was clutch.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
both teams played team basketball. Dallas played better. If anything, Miami was overpassing in game 6, especially during the end run.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
Good to see Dirk and Kidd finally get a title.
I kept thinking throughout the entire series if Sam Presti is killing himself for rescinding the Tyson Chandler trade. Chandler made such a difference for the Mavericks in this series and throughout the playoffs. He would have been such a fit on the Thunder this season.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
Jason Terry’s pull-up jumpers are a sight to behold. And props to Jason Kidd who had to check Kobe, Westbrook, and then LBJ/Wade.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
there are a lot of tools in the NBA (Kidd beating on his wife qualifies)
Say what you want about Lebron, but at least he doesn’t beat his women. I found it pretty fascinating the slurp fest people were giving Kidd last night, when by all accounts he’s really not that nice of a dude.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
The only active coach I’d take over Carlisle is Pop. As far as overrated coaches, the list starts with Rivers and goes from there.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
Jason Terry definitely left me feeling good for him. He seems like a good glue guy, not to mention a tremendous shooter. I saw the interview yesterday morning with him, Dirk and Hannah Storm where they were joking about Carlisle looking like Jim Carrey. Jet just seems like someone that’s fun to play with and root for.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:14 AM

No, that’s a very, very good basketball player using his skills to make a play. A play that he could have made in the 1st quarter. Also, one that he could have not made. Dirk also missed a shot at the end of game three… does that mean he didn’t have his “clutch-ness?” Did he lose it before the game? This clutch talk is all result based. We never remember when great players don’t make those shots, even though they miss them far more than they make them.

Of course clutch is result based. And it doesn’t mean that the player ALWAYS comes through (as Michael Jordan’s Gatorade commercial famously pointed out). However, there is a difference in playing in the first 5 minutes and the last 5. There is a difference in playing in a game 1 and a game 7. Not all circumstances in a game are equal. Dirk was clutch in the 4th quarter, but the biggest clutch player in the series was Jason Terry.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
He’s a total freak. His post moves are laughable up until he lays if off of the glass for two. He’s so much fun to watch. I just wish Nash could have stayed with Dallas.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
I wouldn’t be in too much of a hurry to bypass Barea for Butler.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
JJ Barea is adorable, him taking that charge from LeBron might have been my favorite moment from the game
June 13th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
re: Clutch
Why did Dirk want to keep shooting despite being 1-12 in the first half
yet LeBron wanted to keep passing when his team obviously needed him to score? Guy’s passing to Chalmers/House for jumpers with his team down 7. WHAT?
June 13th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
I can’t remember every 4th quarter, but why Jet over Dirk?
June 13th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
This clutch talk is all result based. We never remember when great players don’t make those shots, even though they miss them far more than they make them.
whatever dude. I’d much rather have the words overrated/underrated purged from the sports lexicon than clutch.
They even keep stats on clutchness. Inside of 5 minutes to go, with the score within +/- 5. It’s somewhat quantifiable.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
A Toronto writer tweeted this last night:
@simmonssteve
Michael Jordan played a role in this championship. If he doesn’t reneg on Raptors trade of Tyson Chandler, do the Mavs win or get there?
June 13th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
This dude was the MVP. Hilarious.

June 13th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
But it takes balls to miss a game winner and come back the next night and take essentially the same shot you missed before.
So your argument is that the world’s greatest basketball players.. the top 1% of the top 1%, don’t have the confidence or “balls” to take a last second shot because they’re afraid they might miss? Eddie House hasn’t seen a jump shot he wouldn’t take, does that make him clutch?
June 13th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
LeBron’s postgame quote was interesting. It appears the man enjoys constantly being surrounded by fire.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
Hey at least the title wasn’t won by a German and a wifebeater … *crickets*
June 13th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
There’s a mindset the Lebron seemed to lack with the game on the line all series long. How many drives ended with a dish to Juwan Howard? At least 2 (missed FG, two missed FTs), and how many times did he pass up a wide open 3 to instead drive into the teeth of the defense so that he could again make the “correct basketball decision” and pass to another player?
June 13th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
probably because he is good at shooting the basketball. Call me crazy.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
Dirk was clutch in the 4th quarter, but the biggest clutch player in the series was Jason Terry.
I won’t say that for the whole series, but that guy shot the ball like he knew he was the best player on the court. It didn’t always go in, but he always thought it was going to.
Suffice to say, Dirk is not Darryl’s kind of player. Plays too close to the ground, shoots too many fallaways, doesn’t play enough (or really barely any) big time D. Which is cool.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
This is because he’s not very bright. He’s a helluva basketball player and his handlers have done wonder for his bank account, but the one thing they can’t do is mask his inherent stupidity. Add his lack of smarts to his massive ego, and you get comments like the one he made last night. Wade handled the presser about 1 million times better than did LeBron.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
He made the comment that LeBron can’t guard me the whole series, and immediately came out and backed it up. It seemed like everytime Miami was on the verge of making a run, Terry was hitting 2 jumpers in a row to shut it down, or he was the one getting the assist.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Lebron’s +/- vs. Wade’s +/- last night with basically the same number of minutes played is startling.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Can we all agree that the Mavs should have hired a hat designer who didn’t start his career in 1994? The lettering on those things is ridiculous. Stevie Wonder could read that from space.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
Biggest disappointment of the series was that it was Jason Kidd and not Steve Nash running the point, we could have done an updated version of this iconic image after the game
June 13th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
That was horrible. And why was Juwan Howard in there to begin with.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
He made the comment that LeBron can’t guard me the whole series, and immediately came out and backed it up. It seemed like everytime Miami was on the verge of making a run, Terry was hitting 2 jumpers in a row to shut it down, or he was the one getting the assist.
Dirk called Terry out between those games too. Said he needed to be more “clutch.” And they ran Lebron ragged chasing Terry.
It seemed like
you see what you want to see. But yeah, that guy played out of his mind in the last 3 games.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
whatever dude. I’d much rather have the words overrated/underrated purged from the sports lexicon than clutch.

Yeah… and when looking at the stats you’ll find that Chauncey “big-shot” Billips is WORST IN THE LEAGUE percentage-wise at taking last second shots to give his team the lead late in games among players that have taken a certain amount of shots. Kobe is league average.
It seems to me that people are confusing “clutchness” with ballsiness.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
Lebron’s +/- vs. Wade’s +/- last night with basically the same number of minutes played is startling.
that was such a weird stat. Dirk had a negative plus/minus, and Brian Cardinal was one of Dallas’s co leaders at +18

I can’t wait for the new wave of drunk Dirk pictures to begin rolling out.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
Dirk was the best player of this postseason. I’m not taking anything from him, I’m just saying that Terry made alot of big plays for Dallas, especially the last 3 games.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
Yeah… and when looking at the stats you’ll find that Chauncey “big-shot” Billips is WORST IN THE LEAGUE
oh, so you’re mad about nicknames, not the quantifiable evidence.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
Agree with the first part, but I would need to see some stats or proof on the second. I will say that him calling out LeBron and backing it up is insane. It makes the scene where Marion was calling LeBron scared that much better.
Something is wrong with LeBron mentally. He disappeared in the 4th quarters for almost the entire series. He didn’t play poorly (shoot a terrible percentage or anything like that) he just disappeared. That blows my mind. Think of any alpha male type player in the league. They might lose games, but they’ll lose games jacking shots and pressing. LeBron lost games by fading to black and hiding. It’s so weird.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
+/- is a completely worthless stat.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
LeBron = shutdown defender
June 13th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
.
I think it’s misunderstood. You can certainly draw conclusions from it.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
can someone point me to what exactly this stat is? I saw them post it a couple times, but my lack of NBA knowledge prevented me from know what the fuck they were talking about.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
LeBron = shutdown defender
it was working when Terry just stood in the corner, until Dallas made an adjustment. But originally, Dallas didn’t expect it, and thought their best move was to play 4-4 minus Terry/Lebron.
They credited watching a lot of game tape of games 1 and 2 to find holes.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
And where the hell was I?
June 13th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Can we all agree that the Mavs should have hired a hat designer who didn’t start his career in 1994? The lettering on those things is ridiculous. Stevie Wonder could read that from space.
Exactly — these hats looked straight out of the late 90′s.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Why did Dirk want to keep shooting despite being 1-12 in the first half
Because Dirk’s a very, very good shooter, and realizes that a 12 shot sample size is not a representative sample. Him shooting gave Dallas the best chance of winning, and his shooting percentage over his career backs that up. Look at all the great players stats… when you start looking at their numbers re: last second/go-ahead shots, once they’ve taken enough to give you a representative sample, they very closely resemble their career shooting percentages. If you want to say Lebron didn’t have any balls and that’s why he gave the ball up at the end of the game, that would be fair. But it’s not because he isn’t “clutch.”
June 13th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
If I were a CHI coach, I’d show the tape of Terry to Rose as an example of what to do when you’re up against a good defender. Play your game. For Terry it was running off of screens all night. For Rose it needed to be forcing the issue and driving to the hoop and not settling for step backs. LeBron played good D on Rose, but he was helped out by Rose settling when he shouldn’t have.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
can someone point me to what exactly this stat is?
plus/minus is a hockey stat that transferred over. Refers to the score of the game while you were in there. While Lebron was in the game last night, the Heat scored 24 less than Dallas, so he’s -24. Dirk was -4 for Dallas.
It’s wonky, because it doesn’t always tell you the right things.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
It’s the number of points your team outscores it’s opponent (or is outscored) while you are on the floor. Last night, the Heat outscored the Mavs by 3 in Wade’s 41 minutes on the floor (which is really good when your team loses by 10). In the meantime, in LeBron’s 40 minutes, the Heat were outscored by 24.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
can someone point me to what exactly this stat is? I saw them post it a couple times, but my lack of NBA knowledge prevented me from know what the fuck they were talking about.
It’s the +/- of points scored while you are in the game. Exactly the same as hockey +/-. I think it has some merits with 5 man units, but as individuals it’s a non starter.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
oh, so you’re mad about nicknames, not the quantifiable evidence.
No… I used that as an example. Most would say Chauncey Billips is “clutch,” right? Aren’t nicknames the result of peoples perceptions of them? Or is there some group of basketball fans that have been clamoring for Billips to relinquish that nickname that I’m unaware of?
June 13th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
How many of those alphas give up and go join someone else’s team? Proves he’s not an alpha at all. The world needs to take this opportunity to rethink how LBJ is marketed. Stop with this best player in the league, Chosen One, King garbage, and realign more with reality. Wade is the alpha on that team, LeDouche is a follower and second fiddle.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
3rd man, did mcdonalds finally give you break room internet?
congrats to the mavs again. just a great win for the good guys.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
It’s apples and…apples.
You’d rather him be called a scared pussy than unclutch? Fine. We’ll go with scared pussy.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
If I were a CHI coach, I’d show the tape of Terry to Rose as an example of what to do when you’re up against a good defender.
chicago’s team is completely devoid of shooters, except Korver who was miscast as a guy being run off of screens. So he can run around all he wants, but Rose is available to be collapsed on, since nobody setting the pick on pick/roll could finish, or would shoot.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
LeBron’s postgame quote was interesting. It appears the man enjoys constantly being surrounded by fire.
When you look at LeBron you can’t believe he’s not older than he is, when you hear him speak you can’t believe he’s not younger than he is.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
Look at all the great players stats… when you start looking at their numbers re: last second/go-ahead shots, once they’ve taken enough to give you a representative sample, they very closely resemble their career shooting percentages
For example: Kobe Bryant.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
I don’t blame for LBJ for leaving at all. Shaq did it. Kareem did it. I would have left CLE, too. The problem, of course, was how he went about it.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
plus/minus is a hockey stat that transferred over.
It has been proven to be basically useless as a hockey stat in the last couple years. Not sure how it translates to basketball.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
having balls is the willingness to take the shot, while clutch is being able to hit it.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Yep…and I am firmly of the belief that if the Palace melee, doesn’t happen, he gets to the Finals the next year. It was Carlisle’s misfortune that he happened to be the coach during that fiasco and dysfunction. Carlisle is clearly one of the 3 or 4 best coaches in the NBA.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Hopefully Garpax are not sitting on their hands and are making some calls. I’m not expecting anything this offseason, but they better have something in mind for next off season.

You can’t explain things like clutch to the stat-heads. They think the games are played in Excel spreadsheets and that the human condition has no effect on the outcome of them.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
The one thing that really bothers me is that during the post game press conference, LeChoke would say things like “I am going to work hard to get myself ready to play next year”. His statements alone should tell everyone that the Heat really were not a team.
Where are your 8 titles now?
June 13th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
In fairness, that was probably an NBA design, and not of the Mavs’ doing.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
Rose has no idea how to run a pick and roll. This is a huge problem for them as they just acquired a big man whose main offensive skill is running the very same pick and roll. Rose and Boozer are going to have to get on the same page if they expect to go any further than they did this year.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
Kareem did it
Kareem one won in Milwaukee.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
having balls is the willingness to take the shot, while clutch is being able to hit it
I would agree with the first part of that statement. I still don’t believe the second part exists. They’ll hit the shot at a percentage that reflects their career shooting percentage once you get a representative sample.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
having balls is the willingness to take the shot, while clutch is being able to hit it.
clutch is driving the ball for a 3 point lead with 14 seconds left instead of 4, because you would absolutely love to engage the other team in a free throws/three point shot contest.
Clutch is scoffing at OKC trying to “ice” you by mopping the floor for two minutes and then draining consecutive free throw number 60 in the series.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
One of the most likable too. It was very easy to root for the Mavs this entire postseason.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
What’s funny is this is a moment for LeBron where he can learn from his mistakes and win back public support (which whether he admits it or not, he wants). Have some humility and accept that he has to grow as a player. Wilbon actually made a smart, thoughtful comment last night when he said he doesn’t feel that LBJ has the will to work on aspects of his game the way even Durant and Rose do. I think his quote was something like, “I don’t see that kind of introspection from LeBron.”
Look, Jason Kidd turned around his reputation, so LBJ can certainly do the same, but making stupid statements like “they’ll go back to the real world and I will still live my life” doesn’t bode well.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
I’m seeing them tomorrow night. Outdoor venue. Should be fun.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
Shaq and Kareem’s examples are not the same as LeBron’s. And who’s team were the Lakers when these two joined?
June 13th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Moses Malone, 76ers. Pippen and Barkley, Rockets. Clyde Drexler, Rockets. Wilt Chamberlain, Lakers.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
You can’t explain things like clutch to the stat-heads.
I know. I will readily admit that you can remove the concept from baseball, because the batter at the plate can lock into the specific task at hand, and that task doesn’t change very much.
But basketball isn’t broken down that far. It’s fluid. That shot you hit in the first quarter seldom happens with all 5 guys edging toward you. The last part of the game is different than the first part of the game.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
@ATL — how was Mumford & Sons? My sister went last night and said it was awesome. I looked at the setlist and it looked like a straightforward m&s playlist.
Incredible. They played a song completely unplugged, which I’ve never seen done before in a venue as big as the Fox Theater. They’re just so much better as a live band than they are on the album, and I think the album is amazing. The setlist included a few new songs too, which I’m very much looking forward to being on the next album.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
I love this comment. Sports are played on the field, not on spreadsheets. It’s one of my biggest gripes with baseball today. It’s all about stats.

June 13th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
I see what you were saying. I don’t fault LeBron for going to “Wade’s team” either, really. I would fault him for going to a team that had, essentially, the same player that he is on it, though. A lot of people said Wade and LeBron were too similar for this to work. They made the finals, but do they make the Finals with a healthy Rondo? Maybe, maybe not.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:47 AM

None of these were afforded the treatment LeBron got in CLE and the situations were differnet as well. I don’t consider Pippen or Barkley alphas either. I took that term to mean someone that can lead a team to a title, a la, MJ, Magic, Bird, Kobe, Shaq, Wade, etc. And Wilt won a chip in Philly.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
There’s a lot of truth in this statement.

I would agree. It’s why I watch very little baseball. It’s depressing to know that all I have left until CFB is 2 tennis majors and 3 golf majors. This is the worst part of the year for sports in my opinion.

where’s my friend IrishMafia? He’ll tell you what NBA playoff basketball is all about – matchups, and exploiting those matchups.
Dallas actually employs a stat nerd who got to sit on the bench. Roland somebody, and Cuban thanked him by name to Hannah Storm, right before he waggled his drunken penis in her face. Carlisle talked about using “optimal lineups” as part of that guy’s job.

June 13th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
but Deshawn Stevenson is really the hero in this series.
Marion played great, doing a hard job, and on offense, driving the ball toward the basket when he had space.
Brian Cardinal did a great job of stealing minutes for Dirk, and pounding on Bosh a little bit. Bosh does not like that, at all. Know why? Because he is soft.

Or as my wife calls it, 3 months of heaven.

Kareem is an awful example of jumping teams. He did it because he was sick of being black and Muslim in Milwaukee.
Shaq is a better example, but he did it to be in movies and its not like he joined up with anyone out there.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
i totally believe that choking exists…you can’t have a true clutch sample because the whole point of “clutch” is the fact that you don’t get more chances.
agreed with husker here…there are expectations built off of statistics, but in the end, when something matters, those expectations are replaced by a demand to perform relative to your normal production. if you normally suck and deliver in the clutch, you’re still david eckstein…if you’re normally lebron and turn in a 7th man’s performance, those “meaningless” stats seem artificial.

Brian Cardinal did a great job of stealing minutes for Dirk
Cardnial played fantastic when he was in. He hit 3′s, was a major agitator for the people who he was guarding and had multiple hard, borderline dirty fouls. He was way more of a bully than Peja could have been — which brings us back to Rick being a great coach.

Milwaukee is a fantastic city with tons to do. It’s got everything you need, entertainment, arts, casino, professional sports without being an insanely overcrowded city/sprawling urban area. I’d highly recommend a visit… just do it between late may and early october.
June 13th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
There’s decent beer and German food. Other than that? It’s small and other than a casino and Water Street, there’s not a whole lot going on. Suppose it’d be a nice place to raise a family, but I wouldn’t want to live there in my 20s.

The things I like about Dirk: he’s always been consistent, he’s always competed and he’s always given it his all. the best player he ever played with was steve nash, who wasn’t quite yet in his prime. dirk never really played with a great player or great team in his prime, but since 2000 his teams have always made the playoffs. it may not seem like a big deal, but it means something. and wade and kobe and a lot of other superstars can’t say that they’ve always carried their teams to the playoffs, no matter what.
the other thing i love about dirk: desagana diop, adrian griffin, deshawn stevenson and jj freakin’ barea all started finals games with dirk. man, what a crap list.

I’ll be honest. I’ve barely watched them. I just found out 30 Rock is now on syndication on WGN. If I had been watching them regularly, I would have known that weeks ago.
Watching them makes me pissy because while I was able to enjoy a nice Bulls run and the Hawks push the Nucks to the edge, I’m now saddled with 3 months of bad baseball and the possibility of backing the Meth Sox just to feed my sports attendance needs. It’s like being stuck between Kathy Bates and Margaret Thatcher.

Like I said, it’s not a bad place, there are just better alternatives. It seems like a heartland midwest city to raise a family in, not a place to sew wild oats in your 20s. I’ve got to think there are better showrooms in the country and even the midwest than Milwaukee for women. I’d also rather spend a summer in Minneapolis than Milwaukee. Lakehouses and such.

is dallas’s team other then dirk better than cleveland’s last year? i think its close.

no because that wouldn’t fit the narrative.

Like I said – You need to see something other than downtown. You do realize that Milwaukee is on Lake Michigan, right? And that there are many small lakes and summer homes in the area? Not to mention there are bars along the river, a great music scene, street festivals NOT NAMED SUMMERFEST that focus on local microbrews, awesome restaurants…
Maybe you shouldn’t comment on the amenities of Milwaukee when you’ve only been a handful of times and have gone out to the same places on every visit.

That sounds like a very peaceful round of golf. I would love it. I think deer are beautiful. Well, until they are in front of me on the road and look like they’re about jump on top of my car.

Can a brotha get an AMEN?!

It is. But I can only attend their games when they play Cubs/White Sox. It’s really, really hard to listen to Michael Kay or the Sterling/Waldman combo. I’ve been handling Kay pretty well and I actually like Paul O’Neill.

I go to Lake Geneva once a year. I’d rather spend it in Minnesota. Minneapolis has more to offer. This is personal preference. I’m not running over your goddamn dog.

That term is used in Rhode Island as well. Are those the only two places in the Union where people call ‘em bubblers?

What was Milwaukee like when Kareem was there?
June 13th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
Extremely white and protestant!

Milwaukee is close to some golf courses I’d love to play – Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run. I’d definitely visit.

Watch a “Happy Days” rerun.
The only other brother in Milwaukee was Fonzie’s drum playing friend Sticks.

There are lots of brothers in Milwaukee. It’s a minority-majority city.

Badger, was it like that in the 70s?
Butters, I’m with you with Thunder Dan

As far as I know. I doubt 400,000 black people moved into the city during the 80′s and 90′s.

It’s also good to see that our country still teaches the retarded how to read and write.
