Dallas Mavericks, NBA Champions
The Dallas Mavericks are your NBA Champions. And oh boy is LeBron James going to get destroyed in the media tomorrow and probably until the inevitable lockout is over.
The Mavericks took control of game six early in the second half and everyone waiting for Miami to make a run and force game seven was left slack-jawed. Whether it was JJ Barea (15 points), Jason Terry (game-high 27 points), or Dirk, the Mavericks always had an answer.
Dirk Nowitzki, who was named Finals MVP, struggled from the field (9-for-27) and had only 11 points through three quarters, but he scored 10 in the fourth – that was a recurring theme the last five games – and the Mavericks pulled away to win, 105-95.
If you could pinpoint one player in the league who doesn’t want a lockout and needs the season to begin on time, I’d say that player is LeBron James. In a listless, timid performance, LeBron committed six turnovers and when he was on the floor, his Heat were -24. (I’m not a fan of that stat in a small sample size, but if you watched game six, you know it was accurate.) James finished with a team-high 21 points, but it was anything but a commanding performance.
Jason Terry gets to keep his tattoo.
More tomorrow, obviously.

Repost: That was pretty cool of Cuban to have the trophy given to the founder of the Mavs. Of course, Cuban took the thing immediately, but still.

June 12th, 2011 at 10:54 PM
There is a great irony about a team of mostly older stars celebrating in Miami.
June 12th, 2011 at 10:54 PM
Very similar to Kobe last year. 6-24, but with 15 (I think) boards. Wonder if idiots like Bill Simmons are gonna be calling for Terry for MVP cause Dirk had a bad game

Also, I think this is the last you’ll see Bosh, Wade & LeShrinkage on a Heat roster concurrently. YOU BLEW IT

June 12th, 2011 at 10:59 PM
I think he was 8-for-15 in the second half in this game though, so he wasn’t hurting the Mavs for the entire game.
June 12th, 2011 at 10:59 PM
Doubt it. Simmons hates Kobe and the Lakers so much it makes him act like a retard. That and Kobe did that against the celtics.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:00 PM
He probably pulled a Herb Brooks after they defeated the Soviets in Miracle.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:00 PM
Underrated part of this finals: JJ Barea has been more important to a championship team than Lebron James. (Of course, you could say that about Heywood even)
June 12th, 2011 at 11:01 PM
Is Adrian Woj from Yahoo! writing his anti-Lebron article and just laughing manically until he sends it to his editors? I cannot wait to read some of these articles tomorrow — the Heat are gonna get kilt.

June 12th, 2011 at 11:03 PM
I’ve never been so happy to see a non-Lakers team win the Finals. Dirk and Kidd definitely deserved that ring, especially over these little Heat bitches. YES!
Cuban’s interview was awesome.
I’m really happy for Dirk.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:03 PM
I love how heat fans say this is the worst heat team you’ll see for the next few years. I didn’t know that Wade is benjamin button and will get younger.

June 12th, 2011 at 11:06 PM
Jeff van gundy is an idiot. Do u really think Orlando trades Howard to Miami for wade or bosh?
From what we’ve seen:
Wade is going to be picking up injuries thanks to his playing style and LeBron runs and hides when the pressure is highest.
Don’t think you’d want that.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:06 PM

June 12th, 2011 at 11:08 PM
Yay!! Dirk is a champion.
I also laughed like a fucking maniac seeing Bosh cry.
Didn’t bother me at all. I liked Bosh in this series, and I thought Miami should have gone at him a whole lot more. They were forcing a switch and getting Dirk on him early, and that was a great mismatch for them all series, if they could have used it more.

This season was the best case scenario for Miami health-wise. Wade is an injury waiting to happen and Lebron probably won’t be injury free forever.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:10 PM
You can’t win with LeBron!!!
//just kidding

June 12th, 2011 at 11:11 PM

This season was the best case scenario for Miami health-wise. Wade is an injury waiting to happen and Lebron probably won’t be injury free forever.
As we saw this series, this Heat team relies entirely on the big 3 because, besides Mario Chalmers and Udonis Haslem, they’ve really not much on the bench to take the pressure off them.
Is Eddie House going to get better next season?
June 12th, 2011 at 11:13 PM
Please keep calling Lebron the best player i nthe league.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:13 PM
I still hate Dirk and Kidd. Fuck ‘em.
I’m trying to find it, but do you remember when you said, during the first half of the first game of the Lakers series, that Dallas was the most mentally weak good team you’d ever seen?
Because I do. Take it back.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:14 PM
I think he was leaving to cry, and also leaving so that neither Wade nor Lebron could shake his hand on the court.

June 12th, 2011 at 11:22 PM
Indeed. It felt shitty to watch them destroy my Lakers, but it was obvious after game 2 that the series was more about Dallas being way better than we thought than the Lakers just crumbling. They proved that by decimating OKC and now beating the Heat. Hats off to Dirk and Dallas.

June 12th, 2011 at 11:34 PM
I liked JVG (who is probably eyeing Spoelestra’s job) said that the Heat should be proud of their season. He’s also the moron who said they’d win 75 games.

pau isn’t soft. had a bad postseason this year like all of the lakers. kobe was the worst offender this season. don’t forget: since acquiring pau, la has been to three finals in four years. and when the lakers didnt get to the finals, they lost to the champs.

Just like the media is calling out LeBron heavily because he should be called out heavily. So don’t get all huffy about the high criticism of LeBron. Someday he’ll probably get past all this. But you don’t crown yourself, fail, and not expect a bunch of reactionary criticism.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:41 PM
softest player in the league? lebron.

Gasol is NOT soft. He was the main reason the Lakers won Game 7 in 2010. I dont forget things like that cause of one bad postseason outing after 3 straight Finals.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:42 PM
Sorry. I watched the games. He played like a tumescent vagina throughout. He never tried to establish position or post anyone up. All he did was take jumpshot after jumpshot like he thinks he’s a Dirk level shooter.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:43 PM
wilbon said that AAU is creating players who can’t deal with Criticism from coaches.
dont care about regular school seasons because they won titles in AAU
dont teach defense
removes sting of losses b/c they play so many more games
i could go on and on. AAU is a good idea ruined by the schemers
June 12th, 2011 at 11:43 PM
that’s a hard hitting fact.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:44 PM
I like Carlisle’s press conference.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:45 PM
Barea was fucking awesome in this game. He deserves it.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:45 PM
But you don’t crown yourself, fail, and not expect a bunch of reactionary criticism.
“Hello. This is the King.”
June 12th, 2011 at 11:46 PM
Kids in general these days in or out of the sports world have trouble accepting criticism. Blaming it in the basketball realm on that one entity is nonsense. 2. If you know anything about the circuit, most of these guys who play on the elite level play on teams that don’t even participate in AAU. They play in elite tournaments on elite teams. If a kid is playing on one of these elite level teams, he will and does receive criticism when warranted, because at that level, they carry much of the power.

June 12th, 2011 at 11:47 PM
Not remotely true.
Also, LeBron may win the next 6 titles…but he’ll never have won one during Kobe’s prime. Tough for him to get past Kobe at this point.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:47 PM

that’s ok. you’re just wrong. i’m sure it’s not the first time. kobe was also soft because he shot 30 percent, hogged the ball, and faltered in the last four minutes of every game. pau had a bad postseason. it happens.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:47 PM
“This is King James”

June 12th, 2011 at 11:49 PM
softest player in the league? lebron.
When’s the last time he’s been seen banging in the paint for rebounds?
“Soft” is an overused word. Dirk is soft because he can shoot like no other 7-foot player? Nonsense.

Never mind, apparently someone has been spreading lies using chris broussard’s name.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:50 PM
Lebron deserves every bit of criticism that has flown his way, and will continue till he’s back in this position, but remember, Dirk was soft too before this playoff run, Bron will figure it out eventually, I’m just glad he found out winning aint that easy, he’s gonna have to earn the right to be a champion…and btw, MJ mustve texted Scottie after all this and said, and you think THAT dude will be better than ME? HA!

Where was that fighting spirit in the 4th quarter? In this series?

Carlisle calling Lebron a “reality show”
YES!
June 12th, 2011 at 11:52 PM
You’re not even close.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:53 PM
allow players to play their natural positions, or develop the skills to play the postion they’ll most likely play at the next level. Unlike high school where the high school coach at west bubblefuck high is going to have the 6’3″ kid play center because he’s the tallest kid on the team.
doesn’t allow high school coaches to have ALL of the influence when talking to a college coach for a kid. If the kid is playing for an asshole who is more interested in having the son of the president of the athletic booster club get all the shots as opposed to the best player on the team, the college coach can atleast refer back to what they saw in the summer.
allows the best to play against the best. Summer ball has done nothing but improve the overall level of play in college and by extension the NBA. There are more good players at more places now than ever before, and summer ball is the predominant reason why.

/ clearly, he doesn’t think much of the Heat

Rashad Lewis is fucking LeBrons girl right how.

Hey the douchebags are up on the podium.
COUGH
June 12th, 2011 at 11:56 PM
Plays through numerous ankle injuries, durable throughout the season, crunch time scorer, has adapeted his game as the team around him changes. Is it because his game is finese in skill level not being “athletically explosive” and he’s not the mold of what people want a 7 footer to be?
June 12th, 2011 at 11:56 PM
1. Scottie says Lebron is better than Jordan, the most pathological player of the last 20 years.
2. Lebron’s play takes a significant dive.
3. Rumors emerge that Lebron’s gf is cheating on him.
I think it’s pretty clear that Jordan heard Scottie’s comments, banged Lebron’s gf, and called Lebron during it.
June 12th, 2011 at 11:58 PM
Used to talk to a playground coach who hated AAU (as well All-Star little league baseball teams). Said they were often formed to do nothing but promote the star player who, when he showed up at his playground to fulfill some prerequisite, didn’t know a lot of things and couldn’t be coached because the parents got in the way.

So glad I don’t live in downtown Dallas tonight. Going to be awhile before that part of town quiets down.
June 13th, 2011 at 12:01 AM
I could make a great analogy with Dirt asking me to admit I was wrong, me doing it, than getting no props from Dirt and tonights Game of Thrones but it would be a HUGE spoiler. So I wont do it. Just know that it would’ve been awesome.
I didn’t realize you needed props, but props. And thanks for not spoiling game of thrones.
I’m so very happy.
June 13th, 2011 at 12:01 AM
Brilliant. And it’s refreshing to have a new commenter (?) who can actually align his brain cells for long enough to get a gravatar.

All right ESPN, it’s time to get rid of that stupid Heat Index.

love the show, got through half of tonight’s at halftime, but had to get back to the game. But right now I’m so pleased that Dirk is a champion, and that he put his head down and drove to the bucket to win two of these games.
So I’ll watch tomorrow or the next day. I haven’t seen the Killing either tonight.

Seeing reporters suck lebron’s and wade’s dicks is disgusting. Adande was sure to cup the balls and everything when it was his turns to talk to james.
June 13th, 2011 at 12:06 AM
For goddsakes finish the episode!
June 13th, 2011 at 12:06 AM
an underwhelming rebounder for his position at his height. Not being athletically explosive doesn’t have much to do with rebounding, just ask Moses Malone or Charles Oakley. Not much of a defender. Jason Terry was their scorer down the stretch for alot of games during a run of years.
June 13th, 2011 at 12:06 AM

Their paychecks depend on remaining on the good graces of the big names. They’ll suck as much cock as needed to keep whatever access they’ve got.

Ballz, I’ve actually been here for awhile, but gravatar, for whatever reason, never worked on my previous handle (BraveSrRob). So I’m still partially a moron for never getting it to work on that name.

June 13th, 2011 at 12:12 AM
I would say the same, but he’s actually agreeing with me.
There are some exceptions. You and Buckner come to mind. Buckner is my F1 bestie and he spent all day getting soaked to the bone in Montreal today during the Canadian Grand Prix.
/unless he left
//in which case he’s not my bestie anymore.
June 13th, 2011 at 12:12 AM
I dont say this often, but I agree with Darrell.
I feel like I say that plenty, and i agree that Dirk got called soft when he was soft. But I don’t think he’s been “soft” for a long time.
This postseason he got whistles like a superstar. And he finished games like a man. He isn’t a good defender, and they finally got a complimentary big man who can catch the ball on offense.
This was a good team. Not a great champion, and a down year for the league, but a champion.
June 13th, 2011 at 12:12 AM
Menarky I’m about two blocks from upper Greenville. Haven’t heard much yet but most of the bats are south of me.

I lived in there during the Cowboys run. Don’t even bother trying to sleep. Just get in your car and start honking your horn.
