Ballin’: LeBron Had a Triple-Double, but Was Terrible Late, and Dallas is on the Brink of a Title
For a moment, it looked like Miami had solved its 4th quarter woes. A 9-0 burst – LeBron had two assists during the run – gave the Heat a 99-95 lead. LeBron had a triple-double. The Heat bench (40 points) was playing its best game of the postseason. NBA commish David Stern began to sweat, because the prospect of a game seven and ginormous ratings seemed bleak with the series headed back to Miami.
Then Dallas peeled off a 17-4 run to close the game, and grabbed a 3-2 series lead. Since game one, Dallas has owned the fourth quarter of the Finals. Game six is Sunday night in Miami.
I know everyone’s giddy LeBron shut up some of the haters with the triple double (17-10-10) but he was at his worst again when it mattered most (the last 5:59). Here’s the breakdown:
* With the game tied at 100, LeBron took a 17-footer jumper over Jason Kidd. Missed.
* At the other end Dirk dunked – we’ll get whether or not it was a travel in a minute – and Dallas led 102-100.
* Next time down the floor, LeBron drove baseline and scored … but it was negated because he was called for a charge. Again, we’ll get to whether or not the refs blew that call shortly.
* Following a Shawn Marion miss, LeBron came back down the floor and took an open 3-pointer: Nope.
* Jason Kidd hit a triple on the ensuing possession and Dallas led 105-100 with 1:26 left.
* That was essentially the ballgame, unless you want to add the 3-pointer Jason Terry hit with LeBron guarding him with less than a minute left.
Stat: 4th quarter scoring, this series (five games) – Dirk Nowitzki 52, LeBron James 11. It’s worth nothing that LeBron had five postseason games this year where he scored 11 or more points in the 4th quarter. I’ll offer my guess why this is happening later. Here’s a video of Wade and LeBron before game five mocking Dirk’s illness/fever from game four.
Now, to the refs and those two questionable calls late in the fourth quarter:
I’ll pass up the opportunity to blame the refs. Feel free to debate it.
Anyway, all is not lost, Miami fans. Teams that have trailed 3-2 in the Finals who have the last two games at home are 3-4. The Lakers pulled it off last year. So obviously, the series isn’t over.
Can we get back to LeBron for a second? He made 4-of-5 three-pointers in the series opener. In the last four games, he’s 3-of-17 from deep. He went 1-of-11 from beyond the arc in Dallas.
I pointed this out a few times last night – the Heat must take LeBron off Jason Terry in the 1st half and save it for the 4th quarter. He clearly looked gassed late last night. Terry simply runs around screens for 30 minutes and I can’t understand why Spoelstra would subject his best player (who is 6-8, 245) to that. Lebron didn’t cover Derrick Rose until the final minutes of games for a reason. The Mavs are no longer (or very rarely) playing Barea and Terry together, so if Terry is on the floor, I’d have Chalmers guarding him. If you do that for 3 quarters, then you can go with Mike Miller over Chalmers late, and shift LeBron onto Terry. No, I have never coached a game, but yes, I’d love to one day.
Obviously, this isn’t all on LeBron (although taking just two fouls shots is puzzling; his low on free throw attempts in the postseason prior to this series was 4, and that was in the game one blowout loss to Chicago). The Heat defense permitted Dallas to shoot 56%, including a staggering 68% from deep (13-of-19). Dirk led the team with 29, but his supporting cast was fantastic again: Terry scored 21, Barea added 17 in his best game of the series and Kidd added 13 after playing terrible in game four. That said, it’s not like the Dallas D was anything special – Miami shot 52% and made 40% of its three-pointers.
I’ll go ahead and predict the Heat win the final two games and LeBron finally snaps out of late-game funk in both of them.

The problem with LeBron is that he just isn’t a good enough technical basketball player. He simply doesn’t have the acute skills/fundamentals necessary when things go south. His footwork is awful, he has no go-to/signature move, his post game is weak, and he doesn’t utilize ball/pump fakes. Think of your typical LeBron highlight. It’s either the chase-down block or a fast-break dunk. Bad players can do those. LeBron simply relies on an unbelievable package of size, speed, hops and coordination. But what he isn’t is highly skilled.
And an unrelated note, D-Wade moving his pivot foot eight times on that perimeter play last night was unreal.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
unreal win by dallas. there is still one more left, and it is the hardest, but the heat look broke.
every game dallas closes the 4th with a giant run. the mavs have guts like i havent seen from a team in a while.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
Mavs shooting was unreal, they just couldnt miss. Incredible effort by the Heat to even be in it, when they did that to the Lakers they won by 35. But of course thats not the important part today.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
Didn’t it seem like everytime the camera focused on LBJ that he looked really out of it? Good write up TBL.

I hate the Heat. But I thought when Wade got back in there he showed some heart and made some big baskets. and I love his no excuses MO.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:17 AM
To be fair you don’t have to make excuses when you are getting a free pass. That Wade injury was complete bullshit.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:17 AM
I hate the Heat. But I thought when Wade got back in there he showed some heart and made some big baskets. and I love his no excuses MO.
i do too, but i think his injury was a little less severe than it was made out to be. if you have a bad hip contusion, you cannot do the jump step-fade away move wade did later in the game.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
Should Dirk hobble around or leave Saturday’s practice in a wheel chair?
/Fuck D-Wade
June 10th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
Who else saw the great matchup of Juwan Howard vs. Brian Cardnail? Those two were going at it. I think it was during the 2nd quarter Cardnail was trying to box out Juwan and Juwan had that blantant foul on a made 3. He kept calling him “bitch” on the way down the court. I love how its the 2011 Finals and Juwan Howard and Brian Cardnail were a small part of it on the court.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
Well, not until DWade turned the ball over then missed a shot, followed by Bosh missing a FT, but again, not that any of that matters.

Guessing they weren’t making jokes after the game ended.
Why is it just about every story focusing on the Heat makes them look more and more like clowns?
June 10th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
I’m loving Marion’s trash talk on Lebron. Camera caught one instance last night where LBJ posted Marion up. Marion just chirping “You suck, you’re scared motherfucker, you’re scared.”
June 10th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
The only analysis you need is Dallas shot 68.4% from 3. End of story. Even if Lebron nailed that late three and got the And-1, they still would have lost. Mind-paralysis by over-analysis. This is getting crazy.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
I’ll go ahead and predict the Heat win the final two games and LeBron finally snaps out of late-game funk in both of them.
After 500 words talking about how LBJ hasn’t played well in the 4th, how can you say this?
June 10th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
LeBron is a bust.

Combine that with how Game 4 ended with Wade failing to catch the inbound pass and throwing a poor pass to Miller and he’s been involved in the last 2 gasps of air for the Heat.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
lbj has not won a playoff series that has gone longer than 5 games. the guy has simply disappeared when he is needed most.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
Did anyone see Wojanarski’s (spelling?) article on Yahoo! this AM. Great read.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
As Clown re-tweeted, Lebron gave his best Lamar Odom impression last night, which is nice and all, but not what you need out of the supposed best player in the league. It’s like the guy is just afraid to try to take over the game or something.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
Here’s a video of Wade and LeBron before game five mocking Dirk’s illness/fever from game four.
This shit just makes me want the Mavs to win more and more every day.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
LeBron is a bust.
If the Heat lose one of the next two games I demand a Heat = bust post.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
I would assume DWade is one everyone’s list of people who should keep their mouths shut when it comes to the severity of other people’s injuries.
Spoelstra’s had a tough job with this team as it’s constituted (egos and thin bench), but this was one of those areas that a high school would recognize and be able to adjust to at this point.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:23 AM

June 10th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
And I hate the Heat as much as the next guy, but Jason Terry doing his little “takeoff” bullshit, running all over the court, after making a jumper is just as bad, if not worse, than Wade posing in front of the Mavs bench.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
he has no go-to/signature move,
You don’t like going to his left to the rim hoping to get foul called move?

Win or lose, it’s all down to LeBron. Every other member of the Heat is giving as much as they possibly can be expected. It’s going to take LeBron going for 30+ for the Heat to take control of these next 2 games and win it all.
This is why the Summer of ‘Bron was so massive. Let’s see if he can live up to his own hype.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:26 AM

Story of the playoffs from the pundits: Dallas isn’t doing anything special (and when they play well it’s a fluke).

It really is so easy to hate these heat assholes. They are trying to be villians because they don’t have a choice. Quit trying to be something you so badly don’t want to be, yet feel obligated to be. It’s pathetic.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:31 AM

TBF to LeBron, it’s not just him. All 3 losses have the Heat go cold, turn the ball over and get beat on the boards in the 4th Q. This isn’t just on LBJ.
Dirk is lifting his teammates. LeBron is standing to the side while his sink.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
I wish this had existed in the time of Gary Payton, they say he was legendary with the hating
That’s good stuff from Marion
June 10th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
Helps when you take 13 FT’s in the 4th quarter. Dirk had one made FG in the 4th and he’s the clutchest evar.

I would sign up for this channel in every sport I follow except for maybe baseball.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
The difference between the Terry take off and the Wade pose was that Terry did it after basically putting the game out of reach. Wade was celebrating far too early.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
So what will be the foul difference come Sunday? +20 for the Heat?
June 10th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
Your first sentence makes the villians no matter what they do. What would you like them to differently?
June 10th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
That right there, that right fucking there is why I cannot stand the Miami Heat. Wade has been a pudsmack to me since 2005 and LeDouche since he entered the league. Fuck those assholes. That sick German wrecked your shit that game and is going to win an NBA title at your pussified expense.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
What a couple of b*tches LeBron and DWade are…..remember against the Bulls when LeBron tried using a “cold” as an excuse if he played poorly. I have never hated a team more than the Heat, such egotistical punks.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
This comes across as a CYA prediction. It’s almost like you haven’t watched any of the games and are just going with some wishful thinking here.

June 10th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Am I correct in saying that the missed ‘travel’ call is basically what everyone (meaning every star… fuck anyone who isn’t the face of a team) is allowed to do? I never realized how much Wade really does move his pivot until the last two games.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
Why are the Mavs so lousy at rebounding with the exception of Chandler. Is it the way their offense sets up, personnel, or are the Heat just that better in the paint?
/doesn’t know much basketball logistics
June 10th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
I will say, I think the officials are terrified of coming off as pro-Heat because of the 2006 backlash (even though the players are mostly different). It’s affecting the calls that almost always go the Heat’s way in any other series.
Also, I think we all realise that, every time Lebron goes to the hoop, he travels, so there is no reason to ever complain about whether Dirk traveled or not. They’re not calling them either way.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:37 AM

June 10th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
I hate Lebron, the Heat, Nick Arison, and Chris Bosh. But I am afraid that Lebron is going to come out in Game 6 and drop 50. If the Heat win Game 6 I don’t think Dallas is winning the series.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:38 AM

My impression was that game 4 was a gift from the officials. I missed the 3rd quarter bc I was outside smoking a cigar for the first time ever (friend just had a baby), but game 5 didn’t seem all that unfairly officiated. I saw a few each way, and the offensive foul late on James looked close. I thought it might go against Miami, but I didn’t think it was egregious by any means..

Also, LeBron is allowed to try and drive or pump fake and get to the line too. It’s in the rules.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
Their 7-foot PF isn’t in the paint most of the time and isn’t a very good rebounder. That only leaves Chandler, and the rest of the Mavs are undersized.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
I probably missed it….but if TBL is going to call out the supposed Dirk travel….I know Van Gundy and the rest of the crew totally called out Wade for his 4-5 steps he took after he picked up his dribble and was being trapped. Dude just kept taking steps away from the defenders so he could make an easier pass.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
So what will be the foul difference come Sunday? +20 for the Heat?
Oh just wait. If LeBron and Wade don’t get 8 FTs each in the 4th, it’ll be a miracle.

Is it me or should Marion get more looks/shots? He’s super intense and seems to make all those sick shots. Couldn’t believe he didn’t pull up on that break late in the game though…
June 10th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
That’s gonna required Lebron do something other than stand in the corner and bite his nails.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
The best part of the series is Dallas somehow wins one more game, if that Kidd will come out smelling like roses, but he’s had a few questionable plays himself.
Basically… if Miami wins, they were supposed to, and will again.
If Dallas wins, Kidd moves up on the all-time PG list, we get talk about Dirk as a top 5 forward of all time, Chandler all the sudden becomes a top 3 center in the league, and Marion is now a valuable player who didn’t choose status/money over winning.

I don’t know what the reaction to Carlisle will be if they win/lose the series, but I do think the Mavs do a good job switching up defenses late, and confusing the Heat. They basically realized they need to stay close through 3, and win the fourth quarter, and have done that in 4 out of the 5 games, and just couldn’t close in one, thanks to some great Miami shot.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
The Howard-Cardinal matchup was like comedic relief in a drama movie.
Cardinal flopping all over the place, setting screens and someone hitting a three. Howard running pick and roll, hitting the 12-foot J, throwing Cardinal to the ground many times and subsequently mean mugging The Janitor.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
.but if TBL is going to call out the supposed Dirk travel….I know Van Gundy and the rest of the crew totally called out Wade for his 4-5 steps he took after he picked up his dribble and was being trapped.
there are so, so many uncalled travels on both teams, all the time. Dirk traveled on the dunk, he traveled on the dipsy doo fast break layup, and Bosh travels nearly every time he swings the ball.
Wade can somehow get from halfcourt to the rim with 2 bounces, despite taking 12 steps. It’s endemic. I’m always dismayed when they call them, because of how many they miss.

True, but the Heat have the size to outrebound the Heat and defend them even better. Like last night, that prayer that Terry shot over LeBron had no business going in, but it did.
Just about every match-up favors the Heat (all but whomever vs Dirk).

Has anyone else noticed Kidd has been turning the ball over more than usual he had three to’s last night. Which seems high for him.

Like last night, that prayer that Terry shot over LeBron had no business going in, but it did.
it was a ballsy shot, but that’s what that guy likes, space to his right. Lebron gave him room on the wrong side, so he didn’t get tangled up with Haslem, who was doing his customary job of making Dirk’s life miserable, and not allowing him to have the ball.
But there was space right where the guy likes it, and he was pretty much on fire.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Couldn’t believe he didn’t pull up on that break late in the game though…

yeah, clock could have gotten under a minute if he had. I wish he would have tried to dunk it at least. No matter now, but it was a weird play.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
He’s actually looked really bad at times. But he’s chucking the ball all over the court like its a rec league game. I think he had like 3 TOs in the first 5 minutes trying to throw some ridiculous outlet pass that ended up four rows deep. He is playing good D tho.
June 10th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
was this right before LeBron posted Marion and laid it up over him and Chandler? Great shooting night by Dallas, good shooting night by Miami. LeBron 1-4 in the 4th, Dirk 1-3 with the 6 home cooking free throws added on. Dallas really looked like they enjoyed that win last night. They must already know it will be their last one of the season.

we’ll see what the officiating dictates, but it seems like the game will be close late, based on these last 4.
Dallas is probably happier about the 3 days than Miami.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
Something I learned the other day: Kidd is third all-time in made 3 pointers. It’s kind of a weird list — Peja is 4th, Bibby is 15th (?)
http://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/fg3_career.html
June 10th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
Ha. He learned his lesson already.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
was this right before LeBron posted Marion and laid it up over him and Chandler? Great shooting night by Dallas, good shooting night by Miami. LeBron 1-4 in the 4th, Dirk 1-3 with the 6 home cooking free throws added on. Dallas really looked like they enjoyed that win last night. They must already know it will be their last one of the season.
in fairness, dirk’s bucket was an aggressive driving dunk. the world is still waiting for lebron to drive through traffic in the 4th instead of launching longer and longer ill-advised threes.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
No, this was right before he bricked like he has all series. You must remember…
June 10th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
I wonder how many people watched the game. Dallas was on fire, everyone knows if that’s the case Miami can’t keep up, regardless how many points x player has on Miami.
Also, if James were to get 35, like everyone wants, they would still lose that game – he was doubled relentlessly, and made the right play when needed. Would we rather have him jack up shots with two guys in his face, or bulldoze to the rim over and over and get fouled out? I think we expect him to play perfect, but even then there would still be criticism about the “Decision” last summer or some other bullshit. PS people MJ jacked up a ton of shots, got every call from the refs, and no, he wasn’t perfect either. ( He also never had a triple double in the Finals)
June 10th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
Forget about true ‘positions’ since Dallas doesn’t care much for them (considering Kidd has guarded LeBron and Durant at times the past two series)
Top 2 scorers: Wade+LeBron vs. Nowitzki+Terry (Heat)
Frontcourt: Haslem+Bosh vs. Chandler+Marion (Mavs I think so far, as ridiculous as that sounds?)
PGs: Chalmers+Bibby vs. Kidd+Barea (Mavs when Barea plays like he did last night)
Frontcourt depth: Anthony vs. Haywood/Mahinmi (Heat, but not by much when you consider Chandler)
Somehow I think my ill-made point is that if you forget about positions, and just look at the depth/experience down the line past the top two players, the Mavs do have some matchups they can exploit. Like Terry doing his best Ray Allen impersonation running LeBron around all game. LeBron > Terry, but maybe Terry is utilized such that the difference can be overcome by the Chandler > Anthony or Nowitzki > Bosh matchups.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
It’s not like the Miami crowd is a boisterously intimidating menace. If the Mavs are legit vets they shouldn’t be fazed. Just gotta watch out for the refs.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
an aggressive drive with 4 steps. Give Carlisle credit in making the decision to run a double at LeBron as opposed to Wade. LeBron’s lack of breakdown dribble makes it easier to stop him that way than a Wade or Kobe who each have the ability to get through tight spots with their dribble.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
we’ll see what the officiating dictates, but it seems like the game will be close late, based on these last 4.
this. the series if far from over. maybe the home crowd will boost miami, but they look broke. i expected tears from lbj at the end of the game last night.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
So if you talk trash backing it up means the other player never scores, like ever?
June 10th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
Jesus Christ I’m incoherent when I can’t see the whole paragraph.
Anyway, experience/savvy matters, and even though Kidd really has s sucked at time, his defense and respect from the refs has been a huge boost.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:06 AM

what we have learned in this series: lebron is the first “superstar” who can be stopped with a double-team. and i guess it’s ok.

true. every lebron move is a travel because his footwork is so poor.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
I definitely didn’t see enough of Marion stopping LeBron in the game or this series to draw a celebration of those comments.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
That WWoS was right when he said the Mavs needed to zone/double to stop penetration, and live/die with LeBron/Wade’s outside shooting?
June 10th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
God forbid Lebron make any adjustments and run off a screen or post up on the block…
The “MVP” and “best player in the league” was on the court for 46 minutes and could muster only 17 points in the “biggest game of his life” – “now or never” game. That’s indefensible.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
Jordan had a couple of games that were ridiculous. Lebron should not be compared to Jordan. I am getting on Butters Super Pippen thing. Look at this box score. That is how the Heat should be beating the Mavs. If anyone did not do enough last night it was alpha dog wade.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
The face Marion was making in the Slo-Mo on Lebron’s non call double dribble was also great. You could see it in the slo-mo face how mad he was about the no 2x dribble call.
/Double Dribble was a great game on NES
June 10th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
It was a few minutes before the game ended and the official scorers totaled up all 2 of Lebron’s 4th quarter points.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
right, because the only thing he was doing out there last night was mustering 17 points. His defense on Terry (besides the throw up 3)is something he should be criticized for more than the 17 points.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:15 AM

This. I defend Lebron against those who use his ‘decision’ as fuel for their hatred. I don’t think he’s better than Jordan. I don’t think he’s even close to Jordan. Nobody ever will be. I take issue with the irrational hatred of a guy who chose to switch employers. You’ll fire back with he’s a cocky shit… well… Jason Terry has the trophy tattooed on his arm.. Brandon Jennings has “young money” tattooed on his back. There are plenty of cocky shits in the NBA that don’t get near the amount of vitriol directed their way. Someone wrote this on twitter last night and I tend to agree. America’s pulling for Jason Kidd (wife beater) and hates Lebron because he chose to move to Miami. Crazy country.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
I think the universe would have imploded on itself had Lebron went and got a tattoo of the Larry O’Brien trophy on his bicep before the season began.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:17 AM

Please fucking stop. We all get that LeBron is the most talented player in the league, and he is catching a lot of shit for his performance, which admittedly is not that bad (he had a fucking triple-double). The thing is if you’re going to have a TV special, talk in the 3rd person, have a WWF style pre-season dance party, and have “CHOSEN ONE” tatto’d across you’re back, you are are probably opening yourself up for more criticism than the next guy…

Marion hasn’t done anything. Lebron has been sucking on his own merits!
/translation
June 10th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
Dude, that’s ~12 pts under his season average. Wade was gone for large stretches of time and the Heat needed LBJ to score. I’ve seen him average 40 fucking points in a playoff series, so yes, he should be criticized. And he shot 42%. And of course his D on Terry was weak. But LBJ was on the court for 46 min. Terry was on for 30 min. What he doing in all that spare time? He was looking for any opportunity to not go to the basket.

June 10th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
it’s not the non-scoring that bugs me about lebron. it’s the total game. he fancies himself a playmaker, so he needs to get his teammates more layups and make plays late in the fourth quarter. he is the biggest, most athletic player on the court, so he should average 12-plus boards a game against a small team. he can be a primary rim protector, but chooses not to. it’s the energy. he could get more put-backs. He could hustle more. putting an imprint on a game is more than just scoring. it’s the will to win and doing anything to accomplish that, no matter how gritty that is.

1. The pre-season party was organized by the Heat to pump their fans up, and wasn’t televised. Also, Lebron just kind of stood there, Chris Bosh was the one acting like a fool.
2. If you’re going to Hate on Lebron for talking in the 3rd person (it’s not like he does it all the time either) explain why you don’t hate Artest, or Jason Terry, or Brandon Jennings.

I heard a stat the other day where when you account assists Lebron was averaging something like 28 points per game, while those he was guarding were averaging 7.

yeah, but mainly that he had none of those in the last five minutes either.
I was once again amazingly impressed with how well Dwyane Wade dealt with / played with that hip thing that obviously kept him from getting too far off the ground. He became a non-jumping player for the most part, and really, really made some great passes himself.
And his mean mug made him look like Gargamel, but that was a big balled 3 for the 4 point lead.
Relentless Dallas, and terry crossing lebron over later negated it, of course.

people say dime or pass, or triple double and it means the same. Every time somebody says triple double, they’re saying assists, you just can’t control F it.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
So when he does his roaming bullshit, and they throw it back to his man for a wide open shot, does the poor sap from Miami who tries to close out get “credit” for giving up that basket?
June 10th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
Jason Terry is a baller. Nuff said.
some nights he’s dallas’s worst enemy, and a lot of those nights are on the road. So let’s not start tattooing trophies on our arms just yet, K?
June 10th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
That is a very good point as well. I still think in the entire scope of the game it goes farther than just his point total. I couldn’t believe he didn’t drive on/back down Kidd on that late possession, instead settling for a long jump shot.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:29 AM
So you’re saying this was indicative of the way the Heat operate and we should despise them accordingly. Will do!
June 10th, 2011 at 11:29 AM
Of course no one mentions LBJ 10 assists b/c he know, and expect, that he can get that every game. What we DON’T expect is for him to ONLY have 17 points. I’m not sure how that’s hard to understand.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:29 AM
no it was the play when his double dribble went uncalled, his offensive hooking foul went uncalled, Marion’s “hip bump” got called, and Marion got T’ed up.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
They scored 106 points last night. Scoring wasn’t their problem, defense was.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
I still think in the entire scope of the game it goes farther than just his point total.
that block/charge was a 51/49 call, but Lebron usually gets that one given the superstar rules that usually apply. And that ball went in. Different game, different narrative if Joe Crawford isn’t the ref standing there right then.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
I just ctrl F’d “triple”. It was mentioned a few times so there is that.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
yes, lebron’s poor defense late was indeed a problem.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
I am all for the Lebron dislike but Michael Beasely’s father is taking Lebron to task on twitter. Considering the excellent job he did raising his own son he may want to ramp down the Lebron hate a bit.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
Lebron the defender:
Marion’s point totals: 16, 20, 10, 16, 8.
The one game in single digits is when Wade was hurt, so Lebron had to guard Terry instead of Marion.
Terry?
12, 16, 17, 17, 21
The one game above 20? Lebron on him.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
As soon as the call was made I looked to the ref and saw that gleaming, shiny dome and I groaned.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:33 AM
Miami was up 3 with 3:30 left. If they simply keep pace and match buckets, they win. Period. But, OFFENSIVELY, they could not score.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:33 AM
They scored 106 points last night. Scoring wasn’t their problem, defense was.
103, right? did Chalmers hit another buzzer beater at the end while I was jumping up and down?
June 10th, 2011 at 11:33 AM
Terry?
12
Stop. In game 1 Lebron wasn’t guarding Terry in the first half, which not coincidentally was when Terry scored all 12 of his points. When Spo put Lebron on Terry in the second half, Terry only managed to attempt 3 shots, missing all of them.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
Gaseous is tight about Terry. That dude can destroy the Mavs in certain situations
June 10th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
Every lazy writer/commenter just says “Lebron was brutal in 4th again, 2 points.” He did not play great by any means, but he had 4 assists in the 4th, had a key block on Marion while the game was still up for grabs, and he couldn’t get into the lane because of Dallas’ D – give them credit. I don’t know if people play basketball here, but you can’t just drive wrecklessly into the lane with 3 guys waiting there, you either shoot a j or dish – which he did, just 2 shots didn’t fall.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:34 AM

12, 16, 17, 17, 21
The one game above 20? Lebron on him.
Also.. do you not remember the Chicago series… you know.. when Lebron COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN the League’s MVP????
June 10th, 2011 at 11:35 AM
also, miami scored just 2 points (both free throws) from 4:36 of the fourth to 29.6 of the fourth, when the game was lost. so offense was a little bit of a problem.

you seem not to be reading people’s comments in their entirety, and assuming. We’re trying to talk like grownups here, but it’s difficult, because 95% of us really like Lebron losing.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
Jason Terry makes 24-foot three point jumper
Dirk Nowitzki makes two point shot
Shawn Marion misses 8-foot jumper
Jason Kidd makes 24-foot three point jumper
Jason Terry makes 26-foot three point jumper
Thats not exactly easy to “keep pace” with.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Jason Kidd makes 24-foot three point jumper
that was the bad one, because he won’t shoot unless he wide, wide open. And there was nobody, except Wade, who was really late and opted to run out rather than contest (which i thought was a smart play anyway)
June 10th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
a little bit. Their bigger problem was in not getting stops.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
It is if you make some shots. And the 4th quarter was Dallas’ third lowest scoring quarter of the game last night.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
you seem not to be reading people’s comments in their entirety, and assuming. We’re trying to talk like grownups here, but it’s difficult, because 95% of us really like Lebron losing.
I read most of them, but this is also referring to CNNSI, ESPN etc. Basically my argument is the guy made the right plays, didn’t make every contested shot, and is being crucified for that.
I’ve watched a lot of ball, and by no means is he playing as poorly as portrayed. Anxiously awaiting game 6. And I’m not even a huge Heat fan (tough to cheer for the Raptors in June).
June 10th, 2011 at 11:42 AM

i play pick-up ball with a former d-league player. we trap, triple, load and that s.o.b. still gets to the rim and converts with multiple fouls. barea, cardinal, deshawn are 12th man roster fodder. dirk and terry are no defensive monsters. It’s just marion and chandler, and lebron is a “superstar”. LBJ should have no problem doing whatever he wants. That’s what great players do.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
A little nervous that Dallas’ dominant shooting night barely got them by (with help from officials). I’m even more nervous that LeBron’s horrendous series can be changed with one game 7 performance for the ages.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
Basically my argument is the guy made the right plays, didn’t make every contested shot, and is being crucified for that.
part of the argument (the unspoken part) is that he’s not being effectively coached. You can go to any one of the above links and see where Carlisle yanked Jason Terry in the 4th quarter for 90 seconds to re-focus him, and he came back in and played so much better after being told specifically to re-focus, because they needed him to play better.
A lot of that is that Spoelstra doesn’t have the luxury of a long bench, but part of that is also the relationship, I think.
Although I don’t watch as much basketball as some of you guys.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:44 AM

He can do a better job, but that lane is damn clogged up and it seems when he starts to drive there are 2 guys right on him. He also is not getting the “superstar” calls when he is driving.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
A player like Rose is really not that hard for a player like Lebron to stop. With his size, he just plays way off of him and lets Rose brick as many jumpers as his broken J will allow.
He has to work a little harder against a guy like Terry chasing him off screens. Sucks that he’s so tired.

yup. 2 Road games, where Barea was beyond awful, and Terry wasn’t much better. With a shorter bench now.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
lebron is playing stunningly, amazingly poor. if he is, say, a shawn marion type, then, yes, he is playing well. if he is the best player on the planet, then he is playing a game that is levels beneath him. hell, we saw him play well against the bulls for crying out loud. MVP-types … their numbers usually go up in the finals, when the opponent is keying on them.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
I mean, my god, Kevin Durant’s skinny ass was getting double digit FTA last series against Dallas.
he was pretty aggressive, and OKC was absolutely always in the penalty. Plus, his jump shot needed contesting, which led to a lot of fouls (being called)
June 10th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
At this point if Bibby isn’t giving you points, there isn’t any reason for him to be on the floor ahead of Chalmers. Chalmers and Miller should be playing closer to 28-30 minutes a night as opposed to the 23-24 they’re getting.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
You’re fucking kidding right? Miami had Rose double and triple teamed on the perimeter all series long, every time he touched the ball. They knew nobody else on the Bulls would hurt them. Lebron’s not guarding Rose by himself for 45 minutes…period.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
both sentences are false.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
lebron is playing stunningly, amazingly poor.
he’s the guy being schemed against. He’s getting the hard double for a reason. He’s not playing well for sure, but he’s also the focus of Dallas’s D. There’s more than just him responsible for his performance.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Spolestra is shit. He needs to put Lebron in positions to be more effective – post up on the block, running off screens going right to the basket instead of holding the ball for 5 seconds letting the defense get set, ISO but on the wing/baseline. He’s played LBJ for like 45 min per game in this series. That’s way too much. And he needs to call out some players, get people fired up, do SOMETHING.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
I agree. If you’re a Dallas fan, don’t put in for that day off for the parade just yet. The Heat are due for a game where they form a conga line to the free throw stripe.
Game 7 will be insane.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
I’m not normally one to think coaching makes a difference, but it feels like Rick Carlisle has been debacling Spoelstra the past two games. The constant change-ups on D, the LeBron doubling, and it seems like they just always have the right guys on the floor, it seems like Carlisle really knows what he’s doing out there.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Well, its not like Miami can count on their bench to do what it did last klnight either though
June 10th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
I don’t disagree with this. Problem is, when you’re capable of the things LeBron is capable of, and you’re built the way you are, and you say “this is the most important game of my life”, people expect a transcendent game.
Someone posted a Jordan box score- Jordan averaged 41ppg on 50+% shooting in 6 games that ’93 finals. Also, he was shooting like 32 shots a game.
People may not have expected that sort of performance because that would be unreasonable, but they at least expected him to takeover. THEN, Wade got hurt, and he still didn’t shoulder the scoring load, even though he is perfectly capable. He reminded me of Rondo last night- this is not a bad thing, but not nearly what he’s capable of and how he needed to perform. If his guys weren’t making great off the ball cuts and making shots, his game would have looked a whole lot uglier. Also, he poached at least 5 of those rebounds from teammates. I know that’s petty, but he did.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
O great now I believe you!
June 10th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
At this point if Bibby isn’t giving you points, there isn’t any reason for him to be on the floor ahead of Chalmers. Chalmers and Miller should be playing closer to 28-30 minutes a night as opposed to the 23-24 they’re getting
yes, the hook for Bibby. But again Spoelstra is sticking to what he’s got, and that’s why Barea has been starting for Dallas. Because Bibby can’t check him at all. And it messes with everybody’s minutes, since they play 7 guys and 4 of them play only half games max.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Which is exactly what Dallas is doing to Super Pippen.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
He needs to put Lebron in positions to be more effective – post up on the block,
I would need a video primer on how that’s a position where Lebron James is “more” effective.
Pick and roll, with him as the screen setter, is probably the best idea. But they don’t do it.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
This is a myth. Watching replays of the game on NBATV, it becomes abundantly clear that while LeBron’s size certainly made it difficult for Rose, it was the overall team defense on him that made him play so poorly. Rose got by LeBron many times with relative ease, only to be met by two guys with LeBron right on his side or right behind him. The Heat as a team stopped Rose. LeBron is not a great one-on-one defender.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
You’re fucking kidding right? Miami had Rose double and triple teamed on the perimeter all series long, every time he touched the ball. They knew nobody else on the Bulls would hurt them. Lebron’s not guarding Rose by himself for 45 minutes…period.
Wow. Did you watch any of those games? Miami wanted rose on the perimeter. His jump shot is his worst asset (aside from his defense). He couldn’t get by Lebron. If people are seriously going to argue that Lebron isn’t one of the best 1 or 2 defenders in the league, then I really don’t know what to say.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
I’ll say it…I actually found myself feeling bad for LeBron. Still loving the fact that they’re down, and I sure as hell will be celebrating things if they lose the series, but deep down, does anyone really deserve this kind of hatred? I make fun of him with jokes…and have for roughly 5 years. But the stuff I’m seeing written borders on character assassination. Love Wojo’s articles, but the dude does realize it’s a sport right?
June 10th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Also, he poached at least 5 of those rebounds from teammates. I know that’s petty, but he did.
Dirk gets almost all of his rebounds in every game off of missed free throws. The almost all part is made up, but that’s a good place to stand to pad that stat, so you don’t look like a bad defender.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
LeBron is not a great one-on-one defender.
All right. I’m done. Good night everybody.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Well JJ Barea probably isn’t replicating last night either. Much better chance the bench shows up when you’re at home.
I prefer Super Magic. Who despite being considered the 2nd best player ever lost like 5 Finals.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
man, i wish these awesome defenses that keyed on and stopped superstars existed before this series. then magic, bird, shaq, jordan, hakeem, duncan and kobe wouldn’t have so many damn rings.
lebron just needs more help. can we get paul and dwight howard on this team? will the new CBA allow that? can they fit P-Jax under the cap? Can the Heat trade Bibby for Blake Griffin?
June 10th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
No, its disgusting.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
refer to my above post. I’ve watched every bulls-heat game in the NBATV replays. Guys get by LeBron all the time. He’s a great roving defender, and very smart with knowing where to be on help defense. He is not a great one-on-one defender. Hell, Marion beat him a few times last night in the post.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
No they’re really not. They double Wade just as much as LBJ. Christ, they had Jason Fucking Kidd guarding Lebron in game 4 for 8 minutes in the first half.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
That invites a double team and then you have four ppl in about a 4 foot radius. Isolating him on the block, given proper spacing for the shooters, forces the Mavs double to come, leaving a shooter open on the perimeter. It is much easier to switch and keep everyone successfully guarded using the pick and roll, IMO.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
fit P-Jax under the cap? Can the Heat trade Bibby for Blake Griffin?
This.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
That invites a double team and then you have four ppl in about a 4 foot radius. Isolating him on the block,
so? If the other guy is Wade, nobody in their right mind is leaving Wade.
Dallas doesn’t (or hasn’t been) doubling Lebron when he goes into the post, at least until he’s dribbled twice and is into a move, because the chances he takes a high percentage shot aren’t that high (unless it’s a dunk). So no double comes and Miami moves on from that plan of attack. All of this usually happens in the first half.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
Its your problem that you think he should be Jordan. Super Pippen played Super Pippen ball. Mini Jordan did not win the game.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
quote fail
June 10th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
not once did LeBron shy away from the attention and praise of being considered the greatest, or better than the greatest to every play the game. he wasn’t forced to star in commercials or held at gunpoint to say yes to the “Witness” ad campaign. He didn’t say “no” to the decision TV event. he said he didn’t want to be one of those guys who “chases the ring”, yet he did.
no, can’t feel bad for him. he could probably use this kind of experience to become a better player overall, to realize if he wants to be better than jordan or the other greats he needs a different outlook on what his role in the team is.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
It wasn’t disgusting when it was Kobe all those years.
/kobe was a rapist, though.
//no he wasn’t
June 10th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
both sentences are false
ok, so you didnt watch the game. got it.
lbj is a great defender, but he hasnt done shit in the 4th, like the rest of his team.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
Also.. do you not remember the Chicago series… you know.. when Lebron COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN the League’s MVP????
This is a myth. Watching replays of the game on NBATV, it becomes abundantly clear that while LeBron’s size certainly made it difficult for Rose, it was the overall team defense on him that made him play so poorly. Rose got by LeBron many times with relative ease, only to be met by two guys with LeBron right on his side or right behind him. The Heat as a team stopped Rose. LeBron is not a great one-on-one defender.
this … and let’s not act like the bulls had another offensive threat. kurt thomas was their second-best crunch-time scorer in the last game.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:03 PM
It is much easier to switch and keep everyone successfully guarded using the pick and roll, IMO.
Dallas (and an assload of other NBA teams) get lots of open looks with it, depending on how it gets switched and which direction the screened guy goes.
Barea last night a couple of uncontested threes last night, and Terry got room to move via pick and roll. All anybody needs is a step, especially Lebron.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
This is why I always thought it was stupid for Cleveland not to trade for Stoudemire. They could have got one of the best pick and roll power forwards and teamed him up with Super Pippen. That PnR would have been fun to watch.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
I prefer Super Magic. Who despite being considered the 2nd best player ever lost like 5 Finals.
really? You’re going to try to bag on Magic Johnson, the player?
June 10th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Actually, it’s LBJ’s problem that he felt it was better to be Pippen in Miami than Jordan in Cleveland. And Pippen didn’t come out of high school as “The Chosen One” or as “King Scottie”.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
Nobody believes he’s the best 1 or 2 defenders in the league. He’s not even close.
There are certain guys in the NBA who are in the NBA solely because of their skills on the defensive end of the court. Start there. Once you get through those players, then Lebron’s name might come up.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
Thats fine but Pippen has also been dogging Jordan since forever. So lets not give Pippen a pass there. Save those passes for mini jordan.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
Yea but it normally works if the guy poppin out is a good outside shooter b/c it forces the defender to have to get up on them. The Mavs have been going under the screen, forcing Lebron to take a long J, and he’s mostly been passing in those situations which is not what you want out of a pick and pop. Once again, it would work, but LBJ needs to be aggressive, say ‘fuck it’, and go to the hole.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
Super Pippen is a keeper
June 10th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
Yea but LeBron has put those expectations on himself. He makes big statements and has yet to back them up totally. Now we’re supposed to be ok with him being Super Pip? I mean I guess it is a “me” problem, but I just feel like I’ve been waiting for him to fully embrace his ability and become the player he has implied and is actually capable of being. It’s like he knows how good he can be but he can’t handle it mentally. I find that incredibly frustrating. The fact that he also crowns himself as King and chosen one and promises 7 titles just makes me think he’s a massive entitled douche. That’s where the dislike/hate comes from. Again, though, you’re right that it’s my own fault. But I think I have at least somewhat solid logic behind the hate.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
I approve, was going with Uber-Pippen last summer but it’s too much work to get the umlauts over the U for each use
June 10th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
the key difference between LBJ and Jordan, or even an athlete like Jerry Rice, is the simple fact that they had the drive to make their game perfect in every way b/c despite having a great cast around them, they knew in the end, they might be the only person on that team that can get the job done. having the talents to do it and having the drive to make it real are two different things. guess which side LBJ falls on.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Not at all, just saying losing a few finals games doesnt seem to have hurt his legacy.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
Hey you don’t have to have logic for hate. I hate plenty of players in the league simply because their face ticks me off. I am just trying to not let mini jordan get a free pass. Hell mini jordan is actually getting compliments.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
Well, I like to have logic behind most of the stuff I do, even hate. I do also hate people I’ve never met because of their face though. Agreed on mini jordan. I think he maybe deserved a pass for game 4, but he needs to take some heat for game 5.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
Don’t drag Harold Minor into this…
June 10th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
Haha. Harold Minor. Alright fuck it Dwade is no longer Mini Jordan. He shall now be known as Harold Major.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
eh, he was King James in high school. He didn’t all of a sudden come up with that nickname in the NBA. If there is a janitor who happens to be named Tut, he’ll probably wind up with the nickname King as well. It doesn’t mean that he feels he’s the King of janitors. Expectations of him out there aren’t all his own. He isn’t the one who decided to have his high school games televised or have his picture placed on Sports Illustrated while still in school. There have been more big statements made for him than by him. People hate because they want to hate, and they find a reason to justify it. The same people who are knocking LeBron for not shooting enough are the ones who crow “6 for 24″ and knock Kobe for not passing enough in a game 7 his team won. It is what it is.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
And he also had those “Tragic” moments mixed in there.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
Not at all, just saying losing a few finals games doesnt seem to have hurt his legacy.
yeah, it’s tough to talk about Lebron’s legacy when we’re in the middle of it. Gotta get a legacy first, no?
And he also had those “Tragic” moments mixed in there.
that was a pretty short span of time. I rooted for Boston then, but you know as well as i do how good Magic was. And regardless of who else is on the team, 9 trips to the finals is a lot of trips to the finals.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
I’m just amazed at how many times I’ve heard Jordan referenced in the past week (30 times just in this post). In no other sport are players directly compared to the greatest to ever lace them up. Even if they play different positions/styles, doesnt matter.
Hockey players arent compared to Gretsky. No one is comparing every single game Peyton plays to Montana’s greatest performance. Baseball sucks.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Before we give Lebron the same pass we give Magic for losing some Finals, can Lebron fucking win something? Magic scored 40 something points in a Finals game as a rookie playing center.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
great point
June 10th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
that’s b/c not all football or hockey players walk into the sport call themselves “The King” while trying to mimic the player widely held to be the greatest by sporting the same jersey number and having similar marketing campaigns saying how amazing you are.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
I know I have heard Brady brought up this way.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Before we give Lebron the same pass we give Magic for losing some Finals, can Lebron fucking win something? Magic scored 40 something points in a Finals game as a rookie playing center.
that happened about a year before I can remember basketball games. Although a lot of my memories not long after that are patently false, or ballz-deepian.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
I don’t necessarily disagree with this. However, I think there’s no denying that LeBron openly embraced all these things. He may not have realized what he was getting into, but he stil embraced the role of the next great one. It also doesn’t help that he has all the physical tools to accomplish this.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
That would be 42 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists as a 20-year-old rookie without Kareem to help win Game 6 for his first NBA title. I wonder if he was doubled or if the defense keyed to stop him?
June 10th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
true, but at least magic had the ball in his hands and was brave enough to fail. lebron gets it and swings it as fast as humanly possible and then stands in the corner and watches.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
This. At this point in his career, not only can we stop comparing LBJ to Jordan, but go ahead and add Kobe, Magic, Bird, West, and Robertson to the list as well. And I’m not even adding any centers to the list.
June 10th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
So between last year’s Game 6 vs. Boston and last night’s game, is it safe to say that LeBron owns the two least-impressive triple doubles in league history?
June 10th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
Lebron is getting a lot of the same criticisms MJ got in the first half of his career. bad fundamentals, relies on his insane athleticism blah blah..if Lebron blends the fundamental side of basketball with his athleticism like MJ did in the second half of his career he will be insane..but will his ego let him realize he need to do exactly what MJ did?
