Bruins Get Another Dominating Win To Even The Series
We’ve got a series! Boston has now outscored Vancouver 12-1 over the last two games. Tim Thomas has allowed just 5 goals in 4 games and for the second straight game, he got into it with a Canuck near his net. This time it was public enemy #1, Alex Burrows. Burrows is becoming one of the most infamous players in hockey in this series. And not just with hockey fans. Casual, blog-reading sports fans probably think, “Alex Burrows? What a dick.”
Things went horribly yet again for Roberto Luongo. After this puck trickled in for Rich Peverly’s second goal, he finally got yanked.
Bill Simmons wrote for years about how he was done with hockey after the NHL lockout in ’94. Quite the coincidence that he came back just in time for the Stanley Cup run.
Here’s Michael Ryder with the second goal of the game. Tim Thomas would have grabbed that no problem.
And of course Brad Marchand did something awesome. First this goal.
Then he takes on the entire Canucks squad. I know its a small sample size, but I think Marchand is my favorite hockey player. Jimmer still doesn’t play hockey, right? OK. Marchand is my favorite player then.
Best of 3. Game 5 is Friday night in Vancouver. Will Luongo be in goal? If he is, will he stop any pucks from going into the net? Will Tim Thomas continue his insane backstopping? Goaltending people. That’s the name of the game.

not a big fan of hockey the past few years, however, what i’ve seen of this series is the most hockey i’ve watched in about 5 years. could almost see myself watching more frequently if i could ever find it on the cable channel.

“Alex Burrows? What a dick.”
Marchand is my favorite hockey player.
Burrows and Marchand play very similar styles.
/I’d take either on the Oilers in a heartbeat

Bruins blog.

You’re going to have some people that disagree with you. You’re also going to have some that will revel in this.
They’re not in his head, but they are forcing him to pick pucks out of his own net which if I’m a Bruins fan (points to temporary Bruins’ tattoo on arm), I’m pretty happy about it. My only legit issue with Vancouver last night is Ehrhoff in the final 4 minutes piling in on the scrum to attack Marchand. Then, when McQuaid who is an actualy fighter, comes over he runs away. If you’re going to take your gloves off like Ballard did, then expect to get hit the face.

How do you not use the simmons and father picture for this post?
June 9th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
Again, for the Sedin haters.
The Sedins finally get back on track and generate a bunch of chances and win the battle convincingly, but Kesler continues to struggle.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
Who knew that Mark Twain was Bill Simmons’ dad?
June 9th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
Same pattern both games – good first period (And into the second last night) but when things fall apart – and Thomas stones them – the whole team loses focus. A little worrying.
I also think Kesler’s still hurt, but he’s not getting any help either.

Not to get all sappy or anything but I guarantee you The Boooogie Man is looking down on this series with a big fat smile on his face. This is his brand of hockey, even if the B’s were a rival of his.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
Tim Thomas is so cool.

Really? Cause this part is way way off base:
“No one in Canada wants you to win, of course. Not when a Canadian team might bring the Cup back home for the first time in 18 years.”
Very few people outside of the province of British Columbia want the Canucks to win.

I can’t speak for Canada, but that picture of Simmons (who disowned hockey) and his dad sitting on the glass sent me over the edge.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:36 AM
Playoff hockey has made me so fucking excited for my move to Detroit. Can’t wait for my first Wings game. I might even get a hockey sweater.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
To be fair I think Simmons got back into hockey a few years ago after the Bruins made an ownership/stopped being cheap asses change.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
I can’t speak for Canada, but that picture of Simmons (who disowned hockey) and his dad sitting on the glass sent me over the edge.
Because he represents the fans and organization as a whole….

June 9th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Alex Burrows is scumbag piece of shit.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Well, Vince Vaughn is also not a widely read sportswriter who made his fame by openly wearing his sports allegiances (and disavowels) on his sleeve, either.
Besides, he’s a dipshit actor. They are notorious sports flakes.

Is there a goaltending issue in Vancouver? Luongo looked increasingly uncomfortable last night, though Geeezeus took us through every goal over the last two games and he’s not solely to blame. Maybe the friendly confines will feel better …
June 9th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
A flake that is from Chicago and has been going to Bears/Bulls/Cubs/Hawks games for years? Some of the irrational hatred around here is mind numbing.

June 9th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
Is there a goaltending issue in Vancouver?
No chance. Are we writing the Canucks off after two road losses? Boston still has to win a game in Vancouver, where the Canucks have last change.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
He grew up here. Not his fault they put the cameras on him during games.
This is a sore subject. I’m on a liquid diet for the next 3 days. Had to go to the ER last night for a surgical procedure. It wasn’t fun. Thankfully the comments last night were a nice distraction.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
I know I’m not SC but I’m going Sunday for Tapes N Tapes at 9pm.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
I don’t see how anyone has an issue with Simmons for this. His dad has been into the B’s all along, and he took him to a playoff game with front row seats… fuck you all who wouldn’t do something nice for your dads.
Simmons admitted all along he stopped watching, but has been watching the playoffs and getting drawn in by the young guys the last few years, and watching more and more. Not like he tweets how big a fan he is all the sudden and loved them all along. A lot of people here (and at Barstool Sports Boston) need to go find a stool and dismount their high horses.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Holy shit that sucks. Hopefully everything’s alright.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
JohnDeWar… sorry you hate your dad.

To back up what Geez said, not at all. It’s Luongo all the way, has to be. Most around here (except some of the larger idiots in the local media) know that and are supportive of that. For whatever reason, CBC loves to focus on this. They showed a picture of Rogers Arena “cheering” when Luongo was pulled, which was completely false.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Geeez, you can say whatever comments you want about Bolland. I hate that guy. Doesn’t mean Burrows isn’t a scumbag.

I’m all good. It’s not the first time this particular thing has happened. Just frustrating, nothing serious. Currently waiting for it to stop raining so I can go get a frosty from Wendy’s. Got home about an hour ago. Just a little loopy from the anesthesia. It’s probably why my anti-Canuck side isn’t quite as fiery this morning.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Geeez, you can say whatever comments you want about Bolland.
I actually really like Bolland (though not at what the Hawks are paying him) and don’t much care for Burrows (though I’d be thrilled if he signed with the Oilers).
Don’t tell anyone.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Yes, please leave in Luongo. B’s do still have to win one at Rogers, but they’ve actually been better on the road, at least in the regular season. Probably going 7.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Speaking of bandwagoning.. considering going to the Vandy superregional vs. Oregon St this weekend. Apparently VU has quite the pitching staff, and much deeper than the David Price year (the last year I went to a game)
June 9th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
When I see Burrows (or Bolland or Marchand) I immediately think of (you’ll appreciate this Geez) Esa Tikkanen. Everyone else hated him but damn he was great for Oilers fans.

Hating punk players on my team’s rival is irrational and comparable to hating that famous people get good seats to games? Give me a break.

The hospital sent me home with 2 gallons of vanilla ice cream. I can’t complain. Frosty for lunch here shortly and there’s a big tub of Jell-O in my fridge. Plus a 4 day weekend.
Things could be worse. Just rolling with the punches.
June 9th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
Yeah they are punks, deal with it. I never said it was you hating on Vince Vaughn or Simmons. Still a terrible comparison.
June 9th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
Yeah they are punks, deal with it.
It’s rational to point out the fallacies of players on other teams but not those of our own. I get it, I really do.
June 9th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
Good times. Reminds me of wisdom teeth surgery. Nuthin but jello, froyo, and soup broth. Lost 8 lbs. Best diet ever!
June 9th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
Three days on liquid diet . . . Thursday, Friday, Saturday. That means you can still hit up ribfest on Sunday.
June 9th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
Dude, do you enjoy putting words in people’s mouth in real life too? Every team has players with fallacies (nee punks), I’m fully aware. Have you ever asked my opinion about guys on my teams? Yeah Dave Bolland is a punk, so is Jay Cutler, but they are on my teams and I root for them knowing their character flaws. It’s how sports work, maybe if the Oilers were any good you would get fired up about their rivals.
June 9th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
Apparently going with the milkshake and codeine diet wasn’t the smart play since I don’t recall any such wasting away
June 9th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
maybe if the Oilers were any good you would get fired up about their rivals.
Ah yes, the ol’ argument deflection. Well done, sir. Must be nice to pretend the NHL didn’t exist before the lockout.
June 9th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
Argument deflection? Did you not read the words before the last sentence? I’m sorry I was a toddler when the Oilers were a dynasty, I’m still well aware of the history. You are starting to sound like Darrell with this nonsense, get over it.

June 9th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
Hey CJ… what do we do with Miller? Apparently he is out of options, so if they call him up for a couple starts and get him the bonus, he’s gotta stay on the club, or clear waivers (which I dont imagine he’d do). His BBs are finally dropping in Pawtucket, but I’d like to see it long-term.
Not sure if dropping a big anonymous bag of cash at his front door with a note that reads “enjoy Pawtucket, the DiceK spot is yours in 2012″ is allowed under the CBA…
June 9th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Really really REALLY liked the Saltalamacchia and Miller pickups, and don’t want to let either go bc of contract stuff (might be the only one who likes the idea of Salty/Tek combo again next year while we wait on organizational depth to develop). Nice to buy low on high-ceiling prospects, and sell high (Andy Marte, Kelly Shoppach, anyone?)
June 9th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Sorry Geeez, I get a little fired up sometimes.
I think failings would have been better, based on the definition I don’t think people can have fallacies.
June 9th, 2011 at 12:34 PM

Seriously though, we have a great hockey community here, passionate fans. But, if you’re going to tell us the Sedins (or whoever) suck, do a little work and explain why.
/Then add “/fuck the Sedins”
June 9th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
Does this apply to any “Patrick Kane sucks” posts too? Because that would suck.
June 9th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
I’ll let you know something about me that you’ll probably like.
I am NOT a Patrick Kane fan. I think he’s lazy, overconfident and takes games off at his leisure. One of the best set of hands in the NHL I’ve seen in a while, but I think he’s going to leave a lot of potential unrealized.
June 9th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
Does this apply to any “Patrick Kane sucks” posts too? Because that would suck.
No, all you have to do is link to the website “DeceasedWhirl”.
June 9th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
I do like that. My least favorite Hawk, and that includes Bolland and those guys (when Eager and Ladd were there the competition was a little closer). Toews, however, well I admire that guy can’t really hate on him.
Can’t believe with potential realignment next year Mr. Byfuglen (or whatever it is) is potentially going to be visiting Vancouver on a regular basis.
June 9th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
However, you say anything bad about Marian Hossa and I’m booking a plane ticket to Vancouver. That guy is off limits. I have a heterosexual man-love for him. I’d walk his dog, wash his car and babysit his kids for free.
June 9th, 2011 at 1:02 PM
Big boy doesn’t like y’all up there. The Stanley Cup DVD from last year… he had some choice words for the Canucks and their fans. There’s a reason those fly-bys were done after goals at Rogers last year.
It’d be nice for the Thrash-Jets if he could summon that fire when they play the other 28 teams.
June 9th, 2011 at 1:03 PM
I’ve noticed that. I share a similar loyalty to Kesler, which I know drives other teams crazy. But he’s ours dammit!
You should still book a ticket to Vancouver. It’s great this time of year, and Safeco Field is only a couple hoursaway. The Mariners actually don’t suck this year too, which helps.
June 9th, 2011 at 1:08 PM
Bolland isn’t healthy often enough to justify as much hate as Burrows.
My opinion on Patrick Kane, great talent and potential. Needs to grow up some (yeah, I know he’s only 21 or 22) and learn how to better handle his affairs off the ice to keep himself out of the negative limelight. I have no idea how much his off the ice escapades effect his play, but I have a suspicion if he really applied himself he’d go from being a very good player to a true superstar.
No Canuck goaltending controversy yet, but if Luongo lets in one or two early in game 5, it will be interesting to see if the boo birds come out in Vancouver.
June 9th, 2011 at 1:11 PM
My opinion on Patrick Kane, great talent and potential. Needs to grow up some
I really hope that 10 years from now we aren’t saying “what could have been?” when talking about Kane. The kid is exceptionally talented, he could be so much more.
June 9th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
Could be. I still believe that Luongo isn’t the main issue the past two games, the lack of scoring and lack of jump after the first periods is. The defense is really down, and I’m not sure if it’s injuries, frustration at some bad bounces getting them off their game, or all the crap after the whistle wearing them down. But they’ve got to get that together.
June 9th, 2011 at 1:16 PM
I have no idea how much his off the ice escapades effect his play, but I have a suspicion if he really applied himself he’d go from being a very good player to a true superstar.I can tell you this much. After Deadspin put up his photos in March, he put up 18 points in 10 games. Wish it didn’t take that kind of motivation, but when he’s got something to prove… look out.
He’s a really nice kid. I’ve met him a few times bar hopping. I 100% agree with you assessment though. He lacks the focus, something that Toews can only help him with so much. They said that after the Vancouver loss, he was with Campbell, Keith and Brouwer working on shit the next day at Johnny’s West. I think with a full summer off and something to prove again, he’ll bounce back.
Just hope it doesn’t take that kind of motivation all the time. Like you said, he’s 21. Lots of room to grow. I know at 21 I was doing a ton of stupid shit and didn’t have millions of dollars or cameras following me around.
June 9th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
I still believe that Luongo isn’t the main issue the past two games, the lack of scoring and lack of jump after the first periods is.
He hasn’t been good, Grape was correct last night, a top 5 goalie has to make the big save (which he did in Games 1 & 2).
When I objectively (feel free to argue against this), a lot of the blame lies with the defenders in front of him.
June 9th, 2011 at 1:26 PM
*objectively look at the goals against
June 9th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
No I agree, he does need to respond, but so many of the goals are a result of defensive breakdowns (hello Ballard) or just plain bizarre bounces that I think they have other things they need to focus on first. I’d go so far as to say their inability to use speed to attack the Bruins in their zone – like they did in games 1 and 2 – is another big problem. It’s been a huge part of their defensive approach, and in Boston it just disappeared. I’m still going to believe that changes at home.
