ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt Supposedly Helped Jordan Williams with His Decision to Enter the NBA Draft
Jordan Williams, a center from Maryland who left college two years early to enter the NBA draft, is projected as a 1st round pick. Tuesday, following a pre-draft workout in DC, Williams dropped something of a bomb: ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt, a noted Maryland alum, helped him on his decision to depart early for the draft.
“Just giving me feedback, what he thought about it. Just trying to make me make the right decision. He did a great job, and I give him a lot of credit for going out of his way. He’s a really busy guy, so for him to go out of his way to do that is unbelievable.”
Apparently, Williams and Van Pelt became friendly two years ago, when, according to the Washington Post’s Steve Yanda, “Van Pelt spoke to the team at a practice prior to the Terrapins’ game at Duke.” Williams later gushed about the Sportscenter anchor:
“A great guy; a wonderful person. Always trying to reach his hand out and help, even when he doesn’t have to. He’s always using his knowledge and using who he knows to help me out.”
I asked Van Pelt about it via twitter and email, but have not heard back. He did respond to one fan, though, saying, “no idea the context. I certainly had nothing to do with choice he made.” This should get interesting.
Van Pelt had some issues with Maryland fans last season, and this news certainly won’t go over well in College Park, where there’s a rebuilding project going on. I bet Terps’ fans are thrilled they now have to worry about keeping Van Pelt happy, lest he steer other kids out of the program.

Doubtful.

this is ridiculous. SVP has always been a huge supporter of the program. why would he push Williams out the door and set the program back? it doesn’t make sense at all. SVP’s comments on Terps fans last year were justified. as of late (2004-present), fans only truly show up for the Dook and UNC games. it’s sad. however, it’s not reason enough for SVP to tell Williams to leave early.
not sure what the fuck this post is about.

She is probably super hot, too. Most beards are.
June 7th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
What’s in it for SVP to do this?
June 7th, 2011 at 2:05 PM
In what way? As a journalistic conflict of interest or in a way that he’ll piss off Maryland fans?
June 7th, 2011 at 2:06 PM
What is she now?
June 7th, 2011 at 2:06 PM
“Hey Nancy, what’s up with you running off Jordan?”
June 7th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
It should? Why? Is Maryland even a relevant basketball program anymore?

Van Pelt hates the re-design, too. Probably why he hasn’t gotten back.

all this post needed was a ‘jarring’ and we would have had the trifecta.

Was it long distance? Or was it after she graduated and moved away from Auburn? I guess my question is how SVP met someone that went to Auburn. I’m not familiar with any associations he has with the school.

Everyone is wanting that pic of Bryce Harper to go. I say I want it to stay! Try looking at the thing for more than 9 seconds without laughing or wanting to punch your computer screen. It’s all about reaction folks.

$500k a year for 6 months of work, and all Steph Curry’s overflow road beef? It’s like being a radiologist but with 8 years less training.

I would be shocked if Van Pelt had any direct contact with Jordan Williams heading to the NBA. Van Pelt is a big time supporter and he even has a Public Announcement that plays before the home games.
This could happen or he could end up being a decent PF who comes off the bench and plays with the second unit. I think he made the right decision to declare for the draft and stay in. This years draft class is so weak that he has a very good chance of being a first round pick and getting at least one guaranteed contract. Next year in what is going to be a loaded draft his chances of being a 1st rounder were a lot less than this year. Staying in college was not going to change the fact that he is (compared to other players) a subpar athlete.
June 7th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
She worked at ESPN. She brought him down to AU for games which is why he’s a pretty big AU fan now. He drops War Eagles when he gets the chance.
