Who has said this? I feel like I am probably as close as anybody to making that claim because I want Harper to be as good as he can be just because I want to see it. And I’ve compared his assholish behavior to Barry Bonds. I’ve never said that he is Bonds reincarnated just that being a dick, being a bad teammate and being the GOAT are not mutually exclusive things. Somebody might see this because it’s one of the top of the page stories so I feel like there’s a reason for me to write on a 5 1/2 hour old post. Chalk one up for the redesign!

@spencer – it’s less about the technical aspect of his swing and more about pitch selection and recognition at that level of ball. he needs better of both if he’s going to be great at the next level.

He was plunked the day before and, I believe, that game. The pitcher was also talking to him as he was headed home. Not that big of a deal. Pitchers have also danced off the mound when striking him out, so it has gone both ways.

The other issue about moving up is the Nationals will not simply rush him if it means losing a year of service. That said, I think he can move to Potomac in the Carolina High A right now and would not be surprised to see it done when the Short Season A roster is confirmed after the draft.

There’s three A levels, so we may just be using different terminology. I’ve always understood the FSL, Carolina and Cali leagues to be ‘high’ A, the South Atlantic & Midwest to be ‘low’ A and the NY-Penn and Northwest to be ‘short season’ A. Not a big deal but my point is that he’s technically still got another level to go before he even reaches AA.

You’re on it, Garland. There is a pretty big difference between Low A and High A. For hitters, the biggest jump is from High A to AA, where the pitchers can all throw breaking stuff that hits spots.

Harper is a Grade A Douchbag, who should get nailed 4 times today to learn from his mistake. However, he won’t learn and he’ll continue to be an asshole.

He’ll be in the majors in June 2012.

maybe a september call up next year. he’s not going to hit well in the show if he doesn’t make the adjustment to offspeed pitches. he’s struggled to hit offspeed in A ball, as someone his age should, but he’s not ready for the big leagues any time soon.

sort of. teams have three A teams, short season (NYPenn) and then full season: for instance, Midwest League is considered not as skilled/younger as/than the Florida League. when I covered the MWL, guys would consider a move to the FSL as a step up. that was 10 years ago, so could be diff now

Not sure about that. He’s striking out in 25% of his ABs at low A ball.
Low A is short season. He’s in A. He’s 4th in the league in OPS (4th in both OBP and SLG) – the three guys ahead of him all played in college and are at least 3 years older. He’s also 2nd in the league in TB, and has 32 walks to go with the 47 SO.

Plus he sells tickets. He’ll be in the majors in June 2012.
