Bryce Harper Homered, Admired His Feat, Then Blew a Kiss to the Pitcher [Video]
All, Bryce Harper, Video June 7th. 2011, 8:00am
Bryce Harper pummeled some more Class-A pitching last night, but this time, there was a twist: After admiring his tape-measure blast, Harper circled the bases, and as he approached home plate, the 2010 No. 1 draft pick looked at the pitcher, and puckered his lips as if to blow a kiss. Douche. You may also notice Harper’s ditched the Ultimate Warrior face paint in favor of a porn ‘stache. I can’t wait to see what happens to this kid when he reaches the majors and pulls a stunt like this.

Welp, its been a while since we had a good villain in baseball
June 7th, 2011 at 8:10 AM
He is sooo gonna get plucked.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:12 AM
You know what there isn’t video of? Bryce Harper getting plugged in the ribs with a fastball. Until there is, there will be more kisses blown. I can’t imagine he’s a good teammate and therefore I can’t imagine retaliation from guys on his side.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:15 AM
I’d love to see Carlos Zambrano (assuming he’s still in baseball) pitch to Harper in his first MLB at-bat
June 7th, 2011 at 8:15 AM
5 bucks says the pitcher was saying something to him after watching that ball so long thus eliciting the kiss.

Unless Zambrano retires next season this could happen. Harper isn’t going to be in the minors after June 2012

A better happening would probably be that thing with the socks and the bars of soap from full metal jacket, but from his Class A teammates who get plunked for his douchebaggy shenanigans.
And then a long bus ride from wherever to wherever with those same teammates, having to sing black spiritual hymns.
/i really only watch movies about baseball, not actual baseball
June 7th, 2011 at 8:19 AM
You can see the pitcher walking off the back of the mound. I’m sure he said something then. Which is stupid. Speak with your fastball.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:19 AM
He got plunked the night before, hence the particular dickery last night. But you’re right about one thing: the kid has literally never had a teammate who liked him. Not once.

Sorry, I clearly can’t format block quotes properly.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:21 AM
Well once wasn’t enough. It obviously didn’t hurt enough.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:23 AM
The sad part is his parents probably had a big hand in this telling him how great he was. We have a couple of girls on a travel ball team(11 year olds) who think their shit doesn’t stink because their parents think they are the greatest players ever.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:25 AM
Not sure about that. He’s striking out in 25% of his ABs at low A ball. I’m interested to see how he does with AA pitching once he gets there since that’s where you find a lot of your elite, nearly MLB ready propects. He could turn out to be Brandon Wood 2.0. Unlikely, but possible.

Sorry, I clearly can’t format block quotes properly.
quick lesson:
Just use the italics button. If you open a command, it has to correspond with a close command (that one has a slash in it).
paste in what you want to quote/italicize, then re-highlight it, and click Italic. Then look at the > and < and what's inside. Once you see the slash, you'll see what I mean. The highlighting makes it easier than anything.

I think Zambrano would run right to home plate, stand toe-to-toe with Harper, and stuff the baseball in his mouth. And everyone in the dugout would stand up and do a dramatic slow clap.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:32 AM
Wow. What a prick. This dude is going to get his ass kicked if he tries that shit with the big boys.

Meredith Viera’s last day on the Today Show. I am.. I’m kind of sad about this.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:37 AM
I went to HS with wood. He was always an idiot as well.

I assumed you watched for Matt Lauer.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:39 AM
I didnt know anyone had strong feelings either way about Meredith Viera. She sort of just ‘is’.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:41 AM
Meredith can still fucking get it. I’m not real focused on her interviewing skills.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:41 AM
I have no clue what it is. But I like her. She just seems kind of cool.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:42 AM
I mean, she’s 57 years old and she looks like my mom. But, fine.

I feel like there should be another name like “Brad Clooney” that we can apply to those of you who find any female on TV attractive.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:46 AM
he’s destroying A ball. i’ll be curious to see how he makes the jump to AA, which is the biggest leap in the minors.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:46 AM
And she’d like it. But I’m serious, it’s not like “I would tap Meredith Viera, that’s why I like her”. She just seems kind of cool. I never found myself hating watching the Today Show or her saying something that made me cringe.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:46 AM
Fastball to the head ought to solve this fairly quickly.

Jen Jolie? Angelina Aniston?

I enjoyed Meredith in Star Trek Voyager. That is the same person write?

I think it needs a mascot, like a picture of a turtle humping a television, or a sloth touching its genitals. Anything the TV brings to you is wank-worthy, as long as you don’t have to move.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:53 AM
Not sure about that. He’s striking out in 25% of his ABs at low A ball.
Low A is short season. He’s in A. He’s 4th in the league in OPS (4th in both OBP and SLG) – the three guys ahead of him all played in college and are at least 3 years older. He’s also 2nd in the league in TB, and has 32 walks to go with the 47 SO.
Plus he sells tickets. He’ll be in the majors in June 2012.
June 7th, 2011 at 8:53 AM
Cream Fraiche!!!
June 7th, 2011 at 8:56 AM
Low A is short season. He’s in A.
sort of. teams have three A teams, short season (NYPenn) and then full season: for instance, Midwest League is considered not as skilled/younger as/than the Florida League. when I covered the MWL, guys would consider a move to the FSL as a step up. that was 10 years ago, so could be diff now
June 7th, 2011 at 8:58 AM
There’s three A levels, so we may just be using different terminology. I’ve always understood the FSL, Carolina and Cali leagues to be ‘high’ A, the South Atlantic & Midwest to be ‘low’ A and the NY-Penn and Northwest to be ‘short season’ A. Not a big deal but my point is that he’s technically still got another level to go before he even reaches AA.
June 7th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
He’ll be in the majors in June 2012.
maybe a september call up next year. he’s not going to hit well in the show if he doesn’t make the adjustment to offspeed pitches. he’s struggled to hit offspeed in A ball, as someone his age should, but he’s not ready for the big leagues any time soon.
June 7th, 2011 at 9:22 AM
How about a “guy?”
June 7th, 2011 at 9:22 AM
You’re on it, Garland. There is a pretty big difference between Low A and High A. For hitters, the biggest jump is from High A to AA, where the pitchers can all throw breaking stuff that hits spots.
Harper is a Grade A Douchbag, who should get nailed 4 times today to learn from his mistake. However, he won’t learn and he’ll continue to be an asshole.
June 7th, 2011 at 9:29 AM
The other issue about moving up is the Nationals will not simply rush him if it means losing a year of service. That said, I think he can move to Potomac in the Carolina High A right now and would not be surprised to see it done when the Short Season A roster is confirmed after the draft.
June 7th, 2011 at 9:39 AM
I would tap Meredith Vieira, that’s why I like her.
June 7th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
He was plunked the day before and, I believe, that game. The pitcher was also talking to him as he was headed home. Not that big of a deal. Pitchers have also danced off the mound when striking him out, so it has gone both ways.
June 7th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
god he swings hard…anyone familiar with the baseball swing here? is it technically sound? looks pretty raw from an uneducated man’s POV.
June 7th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
@spencer – it’s less about the technical aspect of his swing and more about pitch selection and recognition at that level of ball. he needs better of both if he’s going to be great at the next level.
June 7th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
I’m amazed that the ever present “all of the greatest-of-all-time were jackasses and they have to be in ordet to be the GOAT” proponents aren’t poppin’ off here.
… and so it begins …
June 7th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
“all of the greatest-of-all-time were jackasses and they have to be in ordet to be the GOAT”
Who has said this? I feel like I am probably as close as anybody to making that claim because I want Harper to be as good as he can be just because I want to see it. And I’ve compared his assholish behavior to Barry Bonds. I’ve never said that he is Bonds reincarnated just that being a dick, being a bad teammate and being the GOAT are not mutually exclusive things. Somebody might see this because it’s one of the top of the page stories so I feel like there’s a reason for me to write on a 5 1/2 hour old post. Chalk one up for the redesign!
June 7th, 2011 at 4:24 PM
Hope he gets beaned in the head. Jackass.
